Great little place for a quiet stroll with the lady or even by yourself. Water is full of visible marine life and Id imagine it to also be a bird watchers paradise. Extremely happy this little piece of land has avoided development and brought back from nearly being wiped out forever. Thanks to everyone that has helped.
I come here to enjoy what you see below. Spending many sunsets here is as peaceful as it gets, your just a breath away from a bird Sanctuary and watching them coming to nest at night is magical. So looking to bleed of some of the daily stress head down here with a beach chair some head phones and watch the sunset, I can promise you won’t be disappointed.
One of my favorite places to walk in the morning before work. Loved seeing the beautiful egrets, great blue herons, kingfishers and so many other birds. Not to mention the rays, octopus, crabs, and other sea life. Also saw a few coyotes on my walks. I live out of state now but will always have fond memories of this place.
Always a great time at the beach!! Absolutely love the fact that parking is so close to the shore line. unlike other beaches where you have to cross the Sahara desert to get to the water. Arrive early if you wish to get a fire pit. recommending wear water shoes, lots of drift wood twigs on sand rough on the feet!!
Nice place to walk with your date or family to watch listen to The Birds. Nothing too special but it is unique. The signs were very informative and each one had a section for kids to play a guessing game or matching card game they keep them somewhat entertained. Otherwise theres not much else to do here and most of the areas are closed to protect the habitat. The bathrooms are closed and they have a couple of porta potties in front of them. The parking lot accommodated quite a bit of cars and so we didnt have any problems finding parking
Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve is a gift wrapped up in a big red bow for all nature lovers & photographers! Theres a fairly sizable parking lot just north of Bolsa Chica State Beach, on the inland side of PCH. Most times there will be parking for you, as its dedicated just for the sanctuary, not for beach-goers. 3-4 portable toilets are situated at the front of the parking lot.The wooden bridge that spans this wide estuary is a great place to start. Terns, with their aerial acrobatics are a real challenge to photograph here. Also in the summer months, prevalently in the hour before sunset, black skimmers, large elegant black and white birds, that migrate all the way from Africa, use their freakishly long lower bills to scoop up baitfish from the top of the water. They fly just above the surface, skimming the liquid with their lower bill, making a v, in the water as these unique birds hunt. Black Skimmers usually travel in groups of 3-6, and make weird honking noises while they fly.October and November are the months to photograph Pelicans at Bolsa Chica. The Brown Pelicans will sail just above the bridge, using their acute vision. When they spot a group of baitfish, they immediately plummet into the water, opening their huge bucket of a mouth. They then work their ample gullar pouch to coral their catch. Occasionally youll see a lucky fish elude the pelicans mouth and sail to safety, back into the water. During the colder winter months ducks of all species rule the waters here. There are almost too many bird species here to name, but Ill give it a shot...Great Blue Heron, Great Egret, Snowy Egret, Black Crowned Night Heron, Green Heron, Long-Billed Curlew, Willett, Marbled Godwit, Western Sandpiper, Reddish Egrets, Elegant Terns, Forsters Terns, Least Terns, Hummingbirds, Peregrine Falcon, Merlin, White-Tailed Kite, Osprey, Red-Tailed Hawk, Northern Harrier, Great -Horned Owl, Belted Kingfisher, Brown Pintail Duck, Surf Scoter, Buffleheads, Lesser Scaups, Ruddy Ducks, Canadian Geese, American Avocets, Black-Necked Stilts, Brown Pelicans, White Pelicans, several varieties of Cormorants, and undoubtedly many more species live here. Thats whats so cool about this place. The trails at the Reserve are seemingly endless, and a different bird species is literally a few feet ahead!
Amazing!!! Blue Herons + baby in palm tree, Great Horned Owls + 2 owlettes in eucalyptus tree, fiddler crabs, striped shore crabs, woolly bear caterpillars, great egrets, snowy egrets, mullet fishes jumping out of the water, long-billed ... black skimmers, turkey vulture, terns (one flying by with a fish in its mouth to maybe feed baby terns), pelicans, ... the list goes on. Wow, so much life!
Love this place. Peaceful and a decent workout- lots of options and paths. And wildlife of course.
Very amazing sunset when standing very close to it. I live close to here and I love the views. There is also a restaurant down the street so it is very convenient for me.
Great place to walk and bird watch. We saw a pretty large group of white pelicans and other sizeable birds as well as tons of smaller birds, fish and lizards. Not too many people. Outhouses with handwash stations are open.
Lovely place to stroll and observe lots of different types of birds. Great Blue herons, white egrets, 25 pelicans on a skinny island, nesting gulls, and terns zooming around! Well worth the drive. May need to park across the street at Bolsa Chica Beach and walk at the signal; the parking lot is small.
Use to go here as a kid in the 60s long before it was a preserve. Now it has designated trails and observation points. Everyone can learn and enjoy.
Very cool place to check out especially if you like birds. When I was there the wildflowers were in bloom which added a lot to the experience. Its wonderful that this area was preserved and restored. Parking is free, but can be busy, especially on weekends. Well worth visiting if youre in Huntington or Seal Beach.
Great views, friendly people, good walking, running, or light hiking trails. A lot of wildlife and when its not busy there or nearby, very calming too.
Pros: well planned rest areas with information boards of birds, fish along easy foot trails. Bring 10x25 or bigger binoculars, depending what time of day, low tide, high tide, observation of wildlife - birds, fish, cottontail rabbits, small lizards.Con: 2 parking lots fill up fast on a nice day, one off Pacific Coast Hwy, one off Warner Ave both have Porta Potties which are well kept but at times will be in need of cleaning & restock of TP.
What an awesome and beautiful hike! Definitely worth your time. Lots of birds and captivating sights and trails to follow. A must experience!
Went to test new camera gear. Well maintained. Very limited parking.
Beautiful place across the beach, excellent opportunity for bird watching and nature photographs, however parking lot by PCH and bathrooms needs improvement.
Beautiful place to visit. I brought my camera and took some cool bird pictures.
Perfect for a bird watching or a little exercise. A nice reserve to come check out just across the street from the beach
Coastal wetlands of which hardly any remain in southern California across from Bolsa Chica Beach
This is a favorite of mine. We love to walk there. It is not even in some areas. Not good for wheelchairs
It is great place to get free parking and exercise.
Such a beautiful place for a walk, its my favorite place. Lets keep it safe.
Beautiful location. Watched the birds and stayed for the sunset.
Great place to see birds and take a walk.
Great place to take the kids hiking especially if you want to use a stroller. The paths are easy, but I would suggest bringing a map as there are a few looping options to take, and it can be a little confusing for first time visits. We say plenty of birds, and it was a good experience. Please note that bikes, and dogs are not allowed.
Very nice and quiet today everyone is @ the beach or hanging out on main st in HB
Excellent place outdoors on PCH to take a hike and check out over 2000 different species of birds.
Fantastic walking or running trail all levels of fitness. Cool ocean breeze, incredible bird life. Parking at Warner or PCH. Parking is limited.
It is nice place to take a walk next Pacific coast highway easy parking while it last
Loved the place. It was my first time going. The people there taking pictures or out on walks and jogs were so friendly. Everyone was saying hello or good morning. The only downside is no bathrooms until you get back to the parking lot. I had to wait until I walked all the way back.
Any attempt to preserve/protect nature is good.
Amazing spot to enjoy a walk along the wetlands at Bolsa Chica. Mid-day can be hot as there is not much shade. Near dusk is beautiful and the wildlife is active. Youll see many bird watchers and photographers along the route. Make sure to check out the WWII gun mounts which were used for costal defense.
Great place for birding! We saw yellow crowned night heron, blue heron, white heron, osprey, pelican, snow egret and more today! Good exercise too!
Great place for bird photography.
My family and I love this wetlands ,Because the owner of here is birds ,So many of birds enjoy their perches ,and we walked in the trails ,Beautiful Lakes around us, Let’s very relax. We will come here again.
Perfect place to escape the city and take a long or short walk, while watching the ever changing population of birds. Bring your binoculars and cameras!
Lovely setting and very well maintained. You are able to enjoy viewing the birds while not disturbing their nesting areas.
Great place for a hike. Usually not too crowded, if a bit hard to find parking. If you have a good camera its a spectacular location for photos of aquatic birds!
Its an awesome wildlife area. Reminds me of the wetlands in Louisiana without the trees. A great place to have a stroll
Beautiful wild life. Free parking.
Great place for a walk. Lots of birds to watch and occasional fish jumping from water. The two small lots have limited parking. Trail is mostly flat. Either gravel or dirt trails depending which way you go.
Relaxing and peaceful. And free, which is awesome! Lots of different types of birds.
We stopped by here just before sunset. The parking was free and its a pleasant peaceful walk even though its not far from a busy road. A perk was to look down from the boardwalk and see baby stingrays swimming and sea slugs slugging in the water below as well as birds diving into the water for dinner.
Ive been hiking the trails at the reserve now for many years. Very peaceful and pleanty of wildlife to enjoy. There are rabbits, squirrels, coyotes, snakes, lizards, and pleanty of water fowl. There are also species of endangered plants that grow only in the wetlands environment.
The Bolsa Chica Wetlands are beautiful. Its amazing to see what the world can look like when its untouched by humans. So many different types of birds butterflies and fish . Its a great place to jog, bird watch or walk with your family on a sunny afternoon. #LocalGuides
Beautiful and serene place.
One of the best places in the Los Angeles basin to see birds. The reserve has a number of trails that wind through the tidal basin area and they all are very exposed, so definitely bring a hat, sunblock and water for your time on the trails, because as soon as the fog burns off it warms up really quickly. You can see Royal Terns, Great Blue Herons, Great Horned Owls, Hummingbirds, Kingfishers and even some sea ducks like the Surf Scoter. The tidal area close to the ocean also has some awesome nudibranchs and other intertidal life.
It is nice to walk here. There is always nice breeze. The view is great! It is great to take pictures. Parking is a bit small.
Went here for the nesting season. Parking is very limited. People usually come here to take pics and are here 30minutes tops. However I never had trouble finding parking when I go here.Sometimes you can get real up close with the ducks, swans. They do have eagles here that do hunt.Only con would be the parking situation.
Lovely area for walking and site seeing nature wildlife. They also have portable bathrooms and easy free parking.
Beautiful place, especially with the megaboom happening. Its not blooming as much here as it is in Marietta and other places, however it local, easy, and free. Love that.
Parking was a little tight. Easy walking and plenty of birds.
People can walk and jog while enjoying the scene. Learn about eco
Wonderful place to walk around! Beautiful nature in your backyard!
Nice place to go for a walk for all ages. My 2 year old loved it.
A natural setting in tje big city
Always something to see here! Easy walking paths and great lookout spots.
Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve is a great place if you are a bird watcher, walker, jogger or if you love nature.
Beautiful outdoors area for walking or jogging.
I LOVE THIS PLACE!!! Its a beautiful walk on the trail and you never know what you will see. Ive seen different species of birds, jumping fish, rabbits, stingrays and even a coyote!!! Alone time for me and Ive enjoyed it every time.
Parking is limited. Beautiful natural reserve
One of the best bird watching areas in California. Arrive early to avoid not being able to park in the parking lot. Its space is limited.
Definitely worth visiting. Look closely and you get to see some nice fish, stingrays and different bird species. Nice, quiet walk considering its so near to a main road.
Beautiful landscape and very peaceful - Just off PCH 1 - I wish there were more birds but many regular visitors swore they do see many birds there.
Great place to wind down the weekend and connect with nature while maintaining social distancing...
Look out for sting rays, sea hares, and fish especially during low tide! Lots of birds nesting, depending on the season.
This place is specially beautiful during sunset time. Good for birds observation, walking around the flat land is boring.
The Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve is an approximately 1,300 acre coastal estuary. A three-mile trail system offers outdoor activity and immersion in nature. A large part of reserve is also one of the most biodiverse regions in California.
Nice old native amercan storys of they place are crazy
Great beach. Parking is expensive if you arent planning on being there the whole day. Also, watch out for stingrays relatively close to shore.
Nice place for the family to enjoy and learn.
Free parking, we usually meet there before 6 winter or summer, nice natural walk wildlife sightings, nice long trails.
A nice weather today in California.
I come here all the time. Its a great place to see all manner of shorebirds and water fowl. Almost every possible duck comes through here at some point on their migration, as does pretty much every other bird that migrates on the Pacific flyway. In addition you can almost always see terns, various herons, numerous sanderlings, great egrets, cormorants, pelicans, gulls, etc. The walking paths are well maintained, and there are plenty of benches for sitting.
Nice nature walk off pch
Awesome. We saw a light-footed clapperail, an endangered species. Tina spotted it of course.
Good place to go for a walk with you best friend & or your pet...
Free parking, ocean views and Gods creation at every turn. Always a wonderful time spent outdoors.
Interesting birds this time of year.
Nice place for a stroll. Very calm compared to the busy beach across PCH.
Great place to go birding!
Kinda windy but nice
Great place to photograph different species of birds, depending on the time of the year. It is now a very safe area, with two portable toilets in the parking lot off of Pacific Coast Highway 1. There is also a parking lot off of Warner, just a hundred yards east of PCH 1. Hiking trails are all over, and relatively flat. A good time to go is in Spring and early Summer. FYI: There is a white guy, 5ft-8in. who bullies people of color there. And there is also a gypsy family who walks along the path. Their little boy tried to pickpocket my camera pack. I turned around and his little hand was quickly withdrawn and he gave me a bad look.
A nice little slice of nature
Good place to see different type of birds beautiful areaNice area to walk
Awesome place to come relax and enjoy the birds and the peaceful view of this wetlands.
Wonderful place to walk around. Highly recommend a visit. Lots of wildlife that varies depending on the season.
This is a truly lovely place! Tons of trails and paths and wildlife!
Recently paved parking lot opened to public. On this crisp winter day to snow capped San Gabriel Mountains were so pretty.
Pleasant stop with lots of water fowl. Small parking lot with portable toilet off of PCH.
