Have not had the honor of being at the site yet but see our officers and their horses on patrol downtown when at Mass.Always a pleasure, officers and their companions always look great and happy.Thank you for all you do, prayers to you daily.Stay strong.
Very well organized, they take you in a group for a tour. They have 30 horses in stalls to feed. We stopped at the grocery store to get a large bag of carrots and apples since there were 3 of us. If you forget those, they sale treats, however I feel carrots and apples are easier to feed with ease with little ones so the horse wont bite their fingers. We did not have any problems, all the horses were friendly and we felt safe. The staff was friendly and some sit in front selling horse souvenirs. For a free family experience, this was a good one for sure!!
Hidden gem right in the middle of Houston! We brought my 3 year old daughter here for her birthday becuase she loves horses. We were able to feed them and pet them. We had a wonderful time and my daughter got to see her horsies up close for the first time. Its completely free but of course donations are accepted and appreciated. Check the website for a list of days and hours available. Saturday is by appointment only, but I highly recommend making an appointment and going on a Saturday. Big Thanks to the police officers of Houston Texas for all that they do protect the great city of Houston.
Such a cool experience. You get to see and feed the horses and get a good feel for the facility. Everyone is very nice and welcoming plus the best part is its free. This would be a great place for everyone especially kids and horselovers!
Had an awesome experience! The kids had a blast. Make sure to bring red Apples and carrots the love them.
Have to sign a waiver at the beginning and you have to bring your own treats but other than that pretty cool. Some of the horses can be a bit much but cool nonetheless.
So much fun! My daughter loves feeding to horses. Make sure you bring large carrots and apples to give the horses.
Really friendly when I took the houston police department citizens academy and when I took my kids and nephew
Bring your own snacks. Great place to take the family for a great experience for free.
Loved, loved, loved feeding and petting the horses; beautiful creatures, so tame, and well kept. Even caught a glimpse of one teasing anther. Lol
My daughter really enjoyed feeding the horses
It is a great place to take children or the animal loving adult! Signing the waiver (ie registering) took less than a minute even though there were many people there because of Spring Break. They had little gifts (various prices) and horse pellets in a sandwich size bag for sale ($3 cash). You are allowed to bring your own carrots, apples, and peppermints for the horses if you wish. Feel free to bring a lot to feed both sides of the stable! Many horses love to stomp and beg for more snacks! Horses were very kind and gentle. The officers and two selected horses also gave a brief trick demonstration. Parking is limited so it’s best to arrive early (10 min or more). Overall a great experience; will return again soon!
Always LOVE IT here :) were learning the horses names and individual personalities. Officers are so kind and teach us every time.
My girls were so happy to see and feed the horses!
This was such a fun event for the kids and us parents. Meet the horses and learn some cool info about them and how they work.
Great place to take kids of any age to feed the horses. If you have young children carrots are the best option as they dont have to get too up close and personal with the large horses. There are a lot of horses in their stalls and the kids can feed and stroke them.
They were able to handle the Spring Break crowds quite well, so if you can get there during a normal week - things would likely be much more relaxed - definitely worth the time. The horses are all beautiful animals and an experience for anyone who has not had other opportunities to be around such creatures. My children loved feeding the horses carrots once they got over their initial nervousness (they are just 3 and 6 years old, so...)
Great people!
Loved the visit and horses and people
Lol, i just did a driveby lol, meaning i juat passed this place up
Volunteer - they offer visitation to the public between 12p and 2p. You can bring carrots, apples, etc. to feed. K-9 training center on same property.
Very nice place horses are beautiful.
Really cool all the animals are well taken care off and happy
Marvelous facility; would recommend a trip out to the stables 4 anyone. Dont forget the carrots or quarter 3 or 4 apples 4 the horses as treats. So funny to see their heads appear through the gates as they hear you coming all looking for treats!!! Beautiful creatures all, and personalities to boot
This is a great FREE family activity. The staff are very helpful, the horses are precious gentle giants who LOVE visitors! They love peppermints, sliced apples, and carrots sticks. There are usually barn kitties roaming around that love petted also. Horses have allergies too, So PLEASE READ THE SIGNS CAREFULLY before reaching food out to their mouths... a carrot to an allergic horse wont necessarily kill it, but its unfair for the horse to be uncomfortable just because folks arent paying attention! This place is stroller & wheelchair accessible, there are restrooms on site, its convenient to bring hand sanitizing wipes if you are with someone in wheelchair bc they are constantly rolling over yuckies on the barn floor.
My recent visit to the Mounted Patrol made my heart full. Thank you to Officer Thomas and staff for recognizing that my kiddo with an exceptionality needed a little extra space, time, and care when visiting the horses today. In doing so, my son was able to have a positive experience learning about horses.
Fantastic field trip! We learned so much. Mounted units are especially useful for crowd control (because even angry protesters generally have enough sense to avoid horse feet!) and very busy areas where a squad car or officer on a bike would have trouble moving forward. I always viewed Mounted Police as little more than a parade attraction, but they are much more than decorative. The horses were obviously well cared for, calm and friendly with the kids, and gorgeous. My kids marveled that one horse got his face washed without batting an eyelid. (Kids, take note!) The stable was clean and smelled like alfalfa, not manure. Wonderful!
A great place to take the family! I would suggest bringing extra fruit. We had finished all ours in about 20 min.
Great tour for the kids and adults alike. You get an inside look at the mounted patrol support operations and up close with the horses. Great experience for the kids.
Great caring when they are around Seniors and Disabled, I go with carrots and apples for all 31 horses. For people with alzhiemers they always remember horses in their past. It gives the Mounted Patrol time to interact in a positive way, with a forgotten population. And yes its all free except for apples and carrots.
I love you going there feeding the horses.
Great place to take the kids. 15-30 minute intravals of going in and feeding the horses and learning about them. Kids loved it.
This place is great for kids and kids at heart! Personally, when I see these officers during parades and different events, I always have lots of questions. This gives me and the kids an opportunity to interact, feed and pet the horses(also ask questions) when off duty.
Great place for kids birthday.
Tour of the horse barn / stables was amazing. My daughter of 3 had the time of her life!
HPD Mounted Patrol is a must see and must do in Houston! Dont miss the opportunity to visit!
Always fun when we go.
Good time!!! Bring lots of carrots and apples! The horses are beautiful and very gentle!
Nice folks.
Kids loved this, the people who worked there were very knowledgeable and friendly. We absolutely loved it....
So many cute nice horses
The kids had a blast looking at the horses and petting them. Free to come and walk through. Bring snacks for the horses.
Awesome place!! We got to feed the horses that the police officers ride.
We have been there many times. The staff is great. What a privilege to get so close to the HPD horses and hand-feed them. We always bring a donation of grooming supplies, and the officers are genuinely grateful for them. Thanks, HPD Mounted, for all you do For us in the barn and in the streets!
Great place to feed horses!
So much fun feeding the horses and learning about what the mounted division does all over the city.
