The former gate to the Heinrich Hackfeld & Co headquarters courtyard was moved to its current location in the 1970 when the H H & Co building was demolished and replaced with whats today known as the Topa Towers. The beautiful gate has thus become the last reminder of a German entrepreneurial era that helped Hawaiis economy flourish during the late 19th and early 20th century. The Hackfeld family was originally from Bremen in Northern Germany and recruited most of his rank and file directors from his hometown until the company was forcibly sold in 1917 when Germany and the United States became enemies as the US entered WWI. Hackfeld & Co brought sugar to Europe and building materials to Hawaii. They were active in shipping and factoring and the company did business in many parts of the world including Russia, while Honolulu remained its headquarters during its almost 70 year existence (1849-1917).
