Its a teeny tiny thing and if you dont call ahead you dont go inside. But its evocative,a time and strength.. Its good to be next to things, pictures cant give you scale and presence.
My grandmother was born a slave in 1853 in Lowcountry South Carolina. (Orangeburg)? In doing my family research I found women and men in my family were brave and strong. According to my father, who was born 1895 during the Jim Crow era. They had to tolerate and endure brutality from their task master just to survive. DAILY!
I didnt hate the museum. It was suppose to be open and wasnt so Im disappointed
Very engaging vendors and staff members. Entertainment was great. Had a great time even in the rain.
I had the pleasure of meeting the one tasked with the mission of preserving this history. The history is amazing, I should hope that everyone has the experience we had on our visit there. This is a wonderful place to appreciate ingenuity, a desire for better, and the concept of being the change you desire in a community. I would love to see more on how things such as the first bridge, electricity, the great northern migration, and other historical cultural events coincided with or affected the Gullah people.
Good history and the host has a lot of knowledge of the area.
Go when fresh there is a lot of information to take in.
Ok this was nice than expected. Great place to take the kids and allow them to experience nature. Beautiful artwork.
Walk back in time and share the experience of yesteryear. This is obviously a labor of love and the owner is a font of information about the Gullah Geechee people. One of the few times that you will get to hear the Gullah language spoken.
Everyone is really nice an the tour is cool if thats what youre interested
Before you think this is a run of the mill, walk-through reading placards tourist museum...it’s not. It’s a real piece of history. Yes, the admission fee is $10 or $20 dollars, but the wealth of information and experience you receive far surpasses the fee. When you enter the tiny cottage you began an intimate walk into history that is personally spoken to you by a real descent of this historical home turned museum. Expect to spend at least an hour listening to the history. It’s not an in and out visit. If you come here to genuinely discover actual Gullah history and culture told from the mouth of a descendant then this is a museum experience you’ll never forget.
The food was great...
Was listed on a tourist map of the island. Didnt do my homework and found this small museum with limited hours and $20 admission. Decided to spend my time somewhere else.
Hotep!!....Please this may seem like a small bit of sc culture...but just sit talk look and listen..takes you back in time!! Will be going soon...please also if you can make any donations to this museum..it MUST stay alive!!
