Always a fun place to wander around. Tuesdays are Farmers Market day. And that is in itself fun. The local farmers have their produce, honey, home made cheeses n breads, farm raised meats, etc.
Beautiful grounds with a few different exhibits and trails scattered throughout. Although rain cut our visit short, we still enjoyed a few of the boardwalks and the butterfly enclosure. Worth a visit if youre in the area, especially since theres no cost to do so.
If I could give more stars I would. We visited during COVID-19. All staff is wearing masks. We spent 80% of the time enjoying the gardens, walking paths, spaceship, butterfly enclosure, etc. We booked a private (VERY REASONABLE) reptiles and amphibians experience which was SOOO well done, informative and great for both kids and adults. Will definitely visit again if we are in the area. Pristine bathrooms, a place to relax and enjoy!
This was the best part of our trip to Hilton Head island. We did the blue crab discovery tour with two adults and 3 kids from ages 4-10. They had so much fun learning about the salt marsh ecosystem. It was a hands on experience that kept the kids attention the entire tour. If we ever return to the area we will be visiting the Museum.
We have come to Hilton Head for years and never noticed this. Stopped and spent several hours. Could have stayed longer. Excellent history on the island and wild life. Attendants knowledgeable. Will definitely stop again.
A fun and educational experience for the whole family! Ms. Carol even took 10 mins of her personal time to answer questions and share information about Myrtle the Turtle, the horseshoe crabs and cannonball jellyfish. The fiddler crabs were active, mud snails and oysters visible, and live oaks beautiful! We will have to return next visit to see the horses.
This is one of hilton heads best kept secrets. Beautiful views and gardens with many sculptures. Bring a hammock and/ or picnic. Interesting museum with the right mix of art and information. On Tuesdays enjoy the farmers market. Thia destination is all around awesome for kids!!! Fun is free or make a donation.
A great museum for young children as well as adults. It’s rare to find hands-on activities for children, botanical gardens and gallery spaces for the traditional museum goer all in one location. The scenic open spaces are ideal for the special events and festivals which take place here. If you have the time, don’t miss the opportunity to visit the Coastal Discovery Museum!
Its a very pleasant place to go for a stroll. My 11month son enjoyed the kids play room. He was a able to touch and feel different textures, look at the displays.
The grounds of this historic museum are lovingly cared for. Trees are labeled with their species. Some of these very tall trees must be well over a hundred years old. Lots of Spanish moss swaying in the breezes. Theres also a large pavilion for meetings. Just a great place to get information about the Low Country region.
Free to enter. Short trails. Beautiful trees. The exhibits were informative. There was a kids area with dress up options to keep the kids entertained. The piers were nice. Good for a rainy or sunny day.
Free access. Bring your camera and best wide-angle and telephoto lenses. There is a visitors house, pier, walking path, butterfly house, sculptures were displayed during our visit. Lots of photo ops. My phone camera does not do justice. Definitely will visit again.
They have a weekly farmers market seems to be well attended. This is the slow season but the crowd was happy and easily social distanced.
Husband and I took three kids. It was a nice building with educational exhibits. The walk was interesting but I expected a little more. Still would go again.
Lovely grounds. Interesting and informative displays inside. Helpful staff. Worth a couple of hours.!!
If your looking for something to do and near the area why not go stop and check it out there is a nice old lady there very sweet..lol.. not like the rest of you old Hags. Please donate.
Very cool place to visit and kid friendly! I loved learning about the history of the area. I stopped by the museum with my family after going to a farmers market and was surprised that it was free to get in! The butterfly garden is super fun for the kids.
Great place to stroll and explore. Staff is super friendly and knowledgeable.
Really beautiful property with a lot to see. The history of Hilton Head is narrated throughout with stories about the founding families as the cornerstone. A charming butterfly conservatory that still had butterflies left at the end of the season was free to visit as well as the relaxing boat dock area with shelter and viewfinders to see birds and other wildlife. Our only disappointment was that a great deal of the property was blocked off for a private event, but that is bound to happen with such a lovely location.
Very interesting a must stop on your way into the island. Lots of information about the area.
Just a great family place to spend a few hours. Unfortunately we visited during a cold snap and much of the wildlife and flora were not visible. But the kids did still enjoy the scavenger hunt, which I admit we rushed through a bit because of the weather.Overall it was enjoyable; educational and beautiful.
Great place to learn about South Carolina history and agriculture. Really loves the butterfly house and carnivorous plant areas.
The Coastal Discovery Museum is good place to spend a leisurely morning or afternoon on a self-guided tour of the coastal flats of southern South Carolina. Local artisans weave sea grass together with other natural materials, into baskets of beautifully intricate designs and shapes. While youd love to have one in your home, be prepared to pay top dollar. Displays of wild birds and other animals, as well as, informative pictures and frescoes, decorate the museums interior. Access to an outdoor garden was prohibited due to inclement.
Discovery Coastal museum Lab was amazing! Beautiful grounds that you can explore at your own pace. The Discovery lab is hands on for the kids where we figured out life cycles, explored the native live animals, saw alligators, an unusually active welk, looked through microscopes at the many slides they have prepared and learned facts from the volunteers. We completed the self-guided tour through the property as we explored the history of the founding families through the boardwalks, carnivorous gardens, camellia gardens, horse barn, theater and more!
Great Lowcountry experience! Kids (3&7)LOVED it. Lots to see and absolutely BEAUTIFUL grounds (lots of very old Live Oaks).
Beautiful place for all ages! Loved the childrens learning center and garden!
This holds a special place in our hearts. We have been taking our daughter here on her birthday since she was 3, just turned 16. The butterfly exhibit is absolutely amazing!
Very fun place with great history! Anyone who visits hilton head should visit
An excellent day of discovery for you and the kids!! Welcoming open fields SURROUND you as to drive towards the museum and butterfly habitat.Wide-eyed children were handling reptile, chickens and a lop-earred bunny while district teachers studied how a bee thinks with a master bee keeper. We made honey comb candles, honey lip balm and tasted 4 different types of honey!! Yum!.Go alone or book a group. It was an enjoyable day of discovery on Hilton Head Island.
Pretty neat museum set up in an old historic house from early 19th century. Different rooms show different aspect of Hilton Head Island from its history to the animal life. Free but the do desire donations. Also a gift shop
The museum offered informative education and my kids loved the area catered to them as well as the scavenger hunt. They accept donations as there was no admission fee. The property is just gorgeous.
We truly enjoyed this lovely center. We first went to the fresh market. Bit disappointed as only 1 vendor actually selling fresh food. It was the off season so we should have realized it would be this way. There were jewerly, fresh meat, soups, chips salsa vendors. The museum well done for the size. This is an excellent way to learn more about the history of Hilton Head. The gardens & grounds lively. We got to see oyster & clam beds. There is a butterfly habitat. We so loved the camellias. Nice gift shop area too. There are many books available here by local authors.
Had alot of fun here. Took a few educational classes. Walked around the property and out on the docks. Also took a segways tour. Highly recommend it for a family outing.
Great place for the kids and the staff is so friendly!
Great place to visit. Vert informative about a lot of different subjects having to do with the area. Has souvenir type items to buy with tie ins to area. I believe various boat rides, etc., can be arranged from here. Very good, small farmers market there on Tues mornings with great and unusual cheeses, micro greens, free range chickens from local farm and farmer and more. Very worthwhile to visit this museum. I believe they have talks on certain days or nights too, regarding Hilton Head history and the local coastal region.
Nice place to visit. Lots of history and the people are great.
Always a must when visiting Hilton Head. Beautiful grounds. Great history and nature area. Knowledge staff. And don’t forget to visit the farmers market
Exquisite Camelias 120 varieties that bloom fall through spring.
Lots of information about Hilton Head Island. Very interesting tours and programs for all ages.
Very pretty site outdoors with informative museum exhibits.
Incredible in all the good ways! Its full of beauty and fun. Theres a fun kids room, gardens, walkways around the museum and the art is breathtaking. Great place to go with family.
Been here several times. It is wonderful that this place is preserved in the middle of Hilton Head Island a very popular tourist destination.
So beautiful! The houses are wonderfully preserved with great information! The butterfly house was my favorite!
We went for the walk and to look for birds. There was some interesting information in the history of the area and local wildlife. The trees are massive and the Camilla garden was beginning to blossom at the time of our visit.
A nice place with a good combination of indoor and outdoor exhibits. If youre interested in the history of Hilton Head or the wildlife found on it, this is a great place to go.
Good stopping point for families of all ages. A lot of educational opportunities inside and out.
I love this place. They have a beautiful museum and unfortunately with the virus it was closed. You are still able to tour the grounds but the buildings are all closed. I still enjoyedmyseld. It was a lovely day for a mature type walj.
The crab event was insightful for all of us.
Great place for a family outing!! Beautiful scenery and friendly staff!! Check out their website for special activities. We love when Joe and the Gators come.
Fun place, lots of local information as well as art from various artists. Grounds are well maintained and full of picture taking opportunities.
Wonderful museum. Lots of beautiful nature, walking trails and art on display. The childrens room is lovely too. We took 5 children ages 8-17 and they all enjoyed it thoroughly.
Loved this place! Great butterfly house and awesome seeing the marsh wildlife! Bring binoculars! Lots to see!
Wasnt at the museum. I was on the Honey Horn site to attend a gathering for the Heritage Golf Tournament. This is a very good location for such gatherings. The museum is very interesting. I have visited it numerous times.Come check out the Honey Horn site.
This is a great place to visit. We like nature, so we spent most of our time outside. Some of the Oaktrees are over 300 years old and covered with spanish moss. The number of different plants is very impressive and the butterfly exhibit is a beautiful part of the museum. On top of all, the visit was FREE.
Wonderful place. My kids loved it. Can’t beat the price!
Wonderful place! Our kids had a great time here!
Very nicely laid out with history of the area and art galleries before you walk outside into beautiful grounds and a boardwalk that leads through wetlands and oyster beds. The butterfly house was too early to see new ones. The bee and wasps structures were unique. The programs they offer to get on docent tour into nature look amazing and if I was in the area longer would definitely look into it. The grounds are amazing and just so peaceful of a day.
Wonderful little park to stroll, relax, and enjoy the nature of the island.
A nice place to take the family for a quiet visit to get a break from the heat and learn about Hilton Head Islands history. They have a sweet kids activity room as well.
A must stop if you go to Hilton Head. Would be great for families. Full of history and great people!
This was a neat place. We went because we wanted something to do other than lay on the beach. I liked being able to just walk around and explore everything. We didnt take any of the tours, but they sounded interesting. I would visit again. Very kid-friendly.
Fantastic place to visit for its history.
Great place! Free parking, and lots of historic knowledge to be gained. The gift shop is nice, and they have Gullah individuals making baskets. The baskets are for sale but pricey...like over $100 pricey. You can get historic tours here or just roam the grounds.
Super fun place to visit. Lots to look at & explore. But, be careful with the horses, they arent kidding around with the signs about biting. They will bite, even if unprovoked, which can be scary. Even so, I will definitely be visiting again.
Much bigger way more impressive inside than it appears... great place to casually browse. They have some interesting information about the history of Hilton Head Island.
We stopped by on our exploration of Hilton Head. It’s free and worth checking out. Relocating to the Honey Horn plantation in 2007, the property is beautiful. Housing three boardwalks, a butterfly enclosure, and a brief history of the location, we also got the pleasure of enjoying an art exhibit the museum was hosting.
One of my favorite spots on the island. Ive been going for years! The museum is very informative and always has new things to see. The grounds are beautiful with spectacular views. Dont skip this place!
Wonderful place. Family run, quality family experience. Beautiful facility and grounds. From the museum to the discovery room for the kids to the critter meet and greet (you and the kids can even hold a live alligator!) And more, this is a great activity on the island. Highly recommend for all ages.
Great historical site!
The Farmers Market on Tuesdays has a smaller selection (because we probably went in the off season), but they have a great stand for coffee, a few bakeries, and a few farm stands. The grounds are gorgeous and the museum and trail are interesting for all ages.
Holly cow! If your looking to get married here DO IT! It is amazing with wonderful staff. I was thinking about this venue for my wedding but I really want a castle ...
Awesome Experience! Learned a lot about the culture and people! It was Amazing!!
Super fun place for childrens exploration and learning. Our kids loved learning about the horses, seeing the birds and crabs and turtle a d we all enjoyed the butterfly section!
Was actually the Hilton Head Island Seafood Festival, not the Museum. Was a good time lots of varieties for both seafood and beer with live old school music....great time!
We went to the Coastal Discovery Museum, for a trip with our special needs teens. This site is wheelchair accessible and has rest spots, even though the walks arent long, but to give you a chance to enjoy nature. Leading into each site/exhibit there were information charts, to inform you on what was your next place of interest is.. The open butterfly exhibit is amazing; to see them flying around while youre walking in their habitat. The history artifacts on the inside are great eye openers to our past and ancestors. The staff were great and informative, they didnt mind sharing the information they knew. Wonderful experience, would love to go again, with my own children.
Not much to see, but its free. The exhibits have many facts about the history of the island, but little to no interactivity. There are gardens and boardwalks going over the marsh outside. If youre lucky you may get to see wildlife. I got lucky and saw a hawk. All in all, you wont spend more than an hour here before getting bored.
This is a beautiful place. Learning the history behind this place and of Hilton head was an awesome experience. They do not ask for any payment to get in, just donations. The girls loved seeing the butterflies and the horses. Reading the history of the buildings and the gardens was a wonderful experience. They were also installing new art installations and they were so cool. They also had lots of local art and items to purchase inside. Thanks!
Awesome place to learn about the history of the Low Country. Beautiful paths to walk on.
Very exciting nature trails, artwork and marshes. Beautiful trees, magnolia flowers and scenery. Lots of park benches to sit, rest and enjoy. The museum is a gem full of treasures.
Great place to visit and walk.
Nice place to stop and learn about the history of Hilton Head Island.
Interesting stories, nice artwork, lively place to wander.
Very informative place! A lot to do for the little ones. Make sure you check their schedule. Not everything is open all the time. A great place to go though and the staff is great. Kids and also adult history buffs alike will like it. Their little bee exhibit is amazing as well!
Its free to visit and well worth the short drive to see all this place has to offer. Inside youll find a lot of informative, and awesome stuff. Its very laid back and at your own pace to wander through, and go outside and see the sights. Dont forget to go and see the gorgeous butterflies inside their enclosure!
1 word. Amazing!
Great seafood fest...wonderful mucis.
Fun intro to HHI. Good background on the history of the island. Good activity for a walk on a nice day.
Great place to learn about local history
A nice little free museum to learn about the island
Nicest pole barn Ive ever seen!! Of course I did build it.
This is the best little museum and the outdoor scavenger hunt was great for my 3 six year olds. But bring water if its hot because they dont sell it, though they have a water fountain.
An enjoyable, relaxing, serene gem!
