For a couple that enjoys both rock hounding and off-roading, Matson is awesome.

Love coming down here with the kids. Just put the fire pit in for the world to make dinner. Easy to get to, clean, everybody keeps to themselves. Great spot, will always be back.

Fishing, boats, ospreys, families and dogs in the water, the sun sparkledoff the ripples.. big rocks and big potholes... in the past, Ive seen the fire fighting helicopters fill up there. Its a calendar page waiting to happen.

Great place to swim and spend the day. Rocky but large Beach area. There is a porta potty in the parking area. Dogs are allowed. Can watch jetboats come by several times per day.

Matson is one of the best locations for fishing, hiking, and rock hunting. It makes for an unforgettable experience if you get your vehicle stuck in the sand

This was in the worst condition I have ever seen! On Memorial Weekend the park could and should of at least had the Flag posted not to mention the grass mowed! Another way of disrespecting our Veterans this year! Thanks again to our Governor for all your support!!

I love it here mainly to fish and rock hunt. Theres Never to many people here. Its not the best place to swim with kids as the water is a little fast flowing for my liking as far as the kids go. Fantastic fishing spot both sides of the river! Fishing tends to get a little crowded at times.. Great views and during summer your likely to see the hellgate jet boats going down and back up the river daily for most of the day. Evening brings great sky views and wildlife. Great park!

Great spot to swim. But you better like rocks because there are a lot of them with no grass to speak of. The jet boats come flying around the bend here creating awesome little waves for the little ones, kids and dogs alike. This is a popular fishing spot as well so watch your 4 legged friends little paws for accidental dropped hooks. All in all very enjoyable.

We have a special place in our hearts for this place.. I wont tell you why, but it just feels good when were here. They have a single outhouse and tons of parking if you can drive through thick river rock. GREAT FISHING, BOAT LAUNCHING OR PICK UP, DAY USE AND PLAYING IN THE RIVER. If you like to hunt for cool rocks this is the place too. Really pretty.. BUT REMEMBER NO CAMPING, CLEAN UP YOUR MESS AND KEEP fires to a small modest flame and clean it up before leaving and all of us locals will let you visit again, but if its to hard to clean up after yourself.. well then STAY THE HELL AWAY PLEASE.. THANKS

This is a great place to watch the hydro boat races on Monday Memorial Day. Of course everyone else has the same idea. Its right on Finley Bend. I dont fish, but the Locals are out there with their lines in the water alot. Nice beach along the Rogue River to have a picnic. You have to check it out.

Mattson Park is a rock strewn bench at the sharp bend where the Rogue River makes an approximately 100 degree turn north after its confluence with the Applegate River. Finley Bend is the geographical location name given to the river at this point where fishermen can sometimes be seen during steelhead runs.Although this spot is unspectacular in most seasons, the river is always worth appreciating at its various public access points.If you like river-shaped rocks, you will find them in abundance. There is no boat launch ramp but some boaters or fishers carry drift boats to the water from the large unpaved access area of the rock-strewn beach.

This is an open area access to the river. No attendant, phone nor web address. Open in daylight hours. Should be quiet . Dont disturb neighbors

Lotsarock in the elbow of the Rogue River. I see fishermen here often.

I lived very close to Matson Park. The attraction is a lack of police coverage and the resulting behavior. Theres mostly a river rock area adjacent to the river where Finley Bend passes through and no sandy beaches. There are 2 small sandy areas next to the water that are on private property and a mean old lady stares at people who come onto what she claims is her property. Google maps shows the same area as Matson Park. A side dirt road to the left just before the road ends terminates at a very dangerous, unprotected rocky cliff that drops about 60 feet. This road leads to a wooded area where there isnt much to do but there are good views of the Rogue River. There is a porta-poty, a garbage can and a receptacle for waste fishing tackle. People leave trash all over and have illegal fires. They frequently turn car stereos up way to loud which was often loud enough to disturb me where I lived which was about 100 yards from the park. A house across the river often has extremely loud music coming from it. Recently a big snag fell over in the parking area and couldve easily killed someone and/or done serious property damage. This dead tree should have been identified by the Josephine county parks department and taken care of long ago. There are no picnic tables or fireplaces. Cell signals are weak to nonexistent. Illegal fireworks are used around the 4th of July and the police wont enforce the law. The only road to the park is Gunnell and it attracts people who sleep in their vehicles along the side of the road. There has been an RV parked on the side of Gunnell for weeks at a time with people living in it. One guy built a substantial fire pit near the front of the RV where the propane tanks are. The police wouldnt do anything about it. Overall Matson Park is out of sight out of mind and is very family unfriendly and downright dangerous. Its a great place for drug deals though. The police must be aware of this and obviously dont care. Have fun!
