This place is super cool! Its definitely off the beaten path, but well worth the hike. From the park, its down the ridge, past the treeline, and follow the tracks to the left, - you wont miss it. This is definitely an overlooked part of local history, as it has no plaques other than a do not climb or touch. I actually had to carry someone out of the woods from this point, as they had climbed the pyramid, climbed down to the last rock at a three foot hike, jumped down, and broke their foot. For this reason, as well as preserving the monument, it is a good idea not to climb it.
On the national park next to the rail line.
An interesting bit of history, look out for snakes in warm weather.
Pretty cool. Train tracks are dangerous as well as off limits. Beware.
Looks great from the Amtrak train.
Wish there were safer access to the monument and also a way to keep plantlife from growing on it.
A very cool piece of history!
I often take the train from VA to D.C. and this is an interesting and unexpected site by the side of the tracks as you are traveling by train. The pyramid does not otherwise seem easily accessible by car or foot and I certainly wouldnt suggest crossing the railroad tracks. I learned that because of its location even some Fredericksburg residents do not have much knowledge of it as I asked around to find out more information about the monument. Roadside America site provides a bit of background, history and how to safely access/view the site by car or foot travel.
From the National Park Service website...Built by the Richmond, Fredericksburg, and Potomac Railroad; with help from the Confederate Memorial Literary Society, this large pyramid-like structure was completed on March 31, 1898 to commemorate the Battlefield of Fredericksburg. As the train passed the monument, the conductor would point it out to passengers notifying them that they were on the Fredericksburg battlefield.
Have enjoyed viewing this historic monument from a long distance even though I could not get up close and personal with it By The Way.
Pretty kewl but not like in egypt despite being built 4500 years later
Unique landmark.
