... became a 3-generation (fam 1, Rauch), and family reunion (fam 2, Fonzelle) tourist destination for two branches of each family joined by sisters of a 3rd family line (Penn). Overall, a once in a lifetime historically significant teaching moment for the 10, 12, 30, and 32 yrs. old. old family members. Also, an enlightened reminder of the first-hand experiences during the era, for the 58, 60, 62, and 63 yrs. old to share with their respective children and grandchildren.
It’s Tuesday. Museum not open till Friday. Run by volunteers. Our Lyft driver was nice enough to explain the local cultures, show us the beachfront and take us back to Fernandina Shores at the opposite end. Without a private car and knowing someone who owns or lives here, it’s difficult to enjoy. No access. No way to get back to the north end if you’re staying there. We spent much dollars and much time using Lyft to navigate the island. Frankly — offputting. Gorgeous landscape tho.
I loved this place and the curators who are keeping The Beach Ladies Dream alive and moving forward. I encourage everyone to see this jewel of Amelia Island and the African-American community that built it and still lives there.
This was, by far, the most honest museum Ive been to in Florida. While the museum might not be very large, it contains a ton of interesting information on a historic place I would have otherwise had no knowledge of. If you want to support a local community, this is the place to go!
Learn new things everyday! It was an awesome history lesson! The people were friendly and sooo knowledgeable. Recommend it highly.
What a great experience...so much rich history on American Beach. R.I.P to The Beach Lady
Member of American Beach museum, gives a clear and compelling story of how American Beach came to be and local area history and inhabitants. Sadly the beach is being over run with 3 story concrete monoliths on the beach edge. No one should be allowed to build on the beach and block the view. Hubris.
I was surprised to learn the rich black history of this place
Important history and well presented
Amazing trip and great way to learn the history of the beach. A must go!
Beautiful experience at the American Beach black museum.
One of the last African american-owned beaches in America going through a period of regentrification.
As far as it goes, it is an insight into black history in a small beach community. There is a video that provides some background, narrated by a woman who traces her lineage back to the nearby Kingsley plantation. There are some photos from the early 20th century. There are a few maps. The women who operate the museum are very friendly, as were all the people there, as the building also serves other community functions. As a small community effort to preserve the historical record of their town, it is a home run. (But having come from experiencing many large musea in the past, I was somewhat disappointed. )But seen in the light of what it represents to the people of American Beach, and the care that is evident in its creation, it is truly one of a kind.I recommend it.
So interesting..a very important part of history....Thanks for this beautiful museum
Its definitely for the culture
Alot of knowledge in the this place.
An interesting and unique story about this beach.
Historic first black owned beach located in Jacksonville Florida where Americans were separated due to color.
Semi interesting, dont pay though
Historic and just a jewel for contemplating on the contributions and sacrifices of kindred spirits to create such a place against all odds.
Excellent experience!!! The Beach Lady, Dr. Johnetta B. Cole and their family will always be remembered!
Its a great facility to host different functions. We had an awesome prayer breakfast
