An amazing trail that is off the path and without any traffic noise. It uses the cleared old railway line that ran through the area, so its an easy walk without any real troubles.Sometimes the main walking path in is impassable because of heavy rains or when dams further down the river leading to lake Jordan are opened. This doesnt mean you cannot walk the trail is just means you have to find another way on to it. There are areas around with homes you can park at and take to the trail. All the hassle is well worth it. Its a beautiful trail that is pretty clean, well shaded, and easy to walk with a ending view that makes the 5 miles (round trip) trail 110%% worth it. Not to mention its reportedly the largest summertime roost of bald eagles in the Eastern United States. If you have the time give this trail a try, you wont regret it.
Looked nice but currently hunting season oct-jan and trail was submerged under water very near the start so we had to turn around
Completely flooded. Not usable at all as a walking trail. Not a trail but a swamp. Trail ends after 50 ft. Signs havent been updated since 2017/2018.
4.65 mile there and back routePATH: Forested path the whole way with mild root growth across path. Almost all packed dirt except for three brief areas with sand (
I hiked this trail one day in September 2019 after work. Out and back is a bit over 5 miles. There are wildlife photo opportunities on the way out and back but when you get to the lake there will be opportunities to see of photograph the lake from a little peninsula where the trail ends at the lake. When I was there there was an abundance of Great Blue Herons, Great Egrets and other shore birds fishing in the shallow water. The trail is undergoing some drainage maintenance now so I had to walk around some areas and there is an obstacle at the beginning of the trail. I had to cross about 25 yards of knee deep swampy backwater which was about 100 yards from the trailhead. Waders would be a good idea. Wish I’d brought some. Unless you do this hike in winter, bring insect repellent and watch where you put your feet.
This is one of my favorite trails to hike. Bring a good pair of walking/hiking shoes. If there has been a lot of rain the entrance to the trail may be flooded and impassible.
Impassable at beginning of the trail. A fetid stagnant pool of water covers about 25 yards of the trail. This is after 6 days of no rain. Durham county should install a walkway.
It’s flooded you can only get about 40 steps in
Flooded trail. About 20 yards in you hit a swamp.
Update 5/2020 - the trail is completely washed out and you cannot walk farther than 50 feet after the trail head. Avoid this trail this spring
Watch out! The trail goes under the creek/swamp.
Great easy trail! could definitely use some maintenance. I was really disappointed because my dog and I were incredibly close to the end and we had to turn around due to a break in the trial that only had a wobbly plank to walk across. there were a few spots where trees had fallen across the path but they werent too bad to navigate around. beautiful walk through the woods!
No parking lot.
Walked maybe .01 miles to find out the trail drops off into the water with no way to get to the other side.
Completely flooded trail
Nice trail but lots of mosquitos this time of year so bring your bug spray! We used our bob stroller which wasn’t to bad but there were some minor obsticals that we had to go over.
Night hike was fun. Too bad there is so much litter along the trail.
Fun and rustic trail for mountain biking. Gives access to parts of lake Jordan that are hard to reach in other circumstances
Lovely place only issue is you cant really tell where it is. Theres no parking or signs so when the gps says your destination is on the left you have arrived its for real. Me and my pup didnt finish the hike either which was bumer there some pretty wide spots on the path that habe a creek under them only way to cross is an old plank. Lol if my pup wont cross im not crossing. Very pretty walk and easy trail.
A great, short easy hike to a cool location!
Been Hunting Here For A Few Years, Not Many Deer, But Lots Of Ducks And Squirrels To Hunt. The Only Down Side Is All The New Houses Going Up, They Are Ruining A Obce Good Hunting Area.
No markers on this trail.. Dont think you need them. You can spot some colorful insects and snakes on your way to the lake.
Nice trail continues all the way to lake jordan where it juts out into the lake on an old rail embankment; with a quiet peaceful view of jordan lake. Converted old railway track which is flat and level. It extents through a lot of more rustic/natural settings. There are occasional downed trees, etc.; which means strollers, etc. can be more difficult. Although the trail is very peaceful and adventurist (in comparison to the american tobacco trail for example.) Not a ton of parking though; as all parking is in the gravel along the side of the road.
Nice trail with good views at the lake. But bring bug spray!!
Impassable
Watch out for hunters
