I took my parents for my moms birthday. We were concerned with the spike in covid cases if it was a good idea, but they really took it seriously. They took temps at the door, kept groups small, and had markers on the floor so you could distance from non-family members in your group. Our tour guide was amazing and was passionate about the museum. Highly recommend going if you havent already.
I had the most amazing time ever. To be were Smokey Robinson, Diana Ross, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gate and Temptation etc... once stood and sand was AMAZING I loved every minute of it. I am a New Yorker so this was a dream come true for me Wait the staff there was awesome with Amazing facts that I never knew they were well informed.
Great homage to an iconic landmark of the Black American experience. While truly a transcendent human story, it is not lost on me how we might glance over Berry Gordys innovations simply because we think we know everything from the gold records. This brief interlude into the origin stories of the most successful record label of its time is required reading, and witness, in my humble opinion for anyone considering themselves an audiophile or simply a fan of music. Its a Must-see visit when youre in the Motor City.
What a gem of a place! The tour guide told of how Motown was created and what artists recorded there, and so much more. All very interesting. What was equally powerful, though, was what happens at the end of the tour that brings strangers together. Proving that there is always music that unites, even at a studio no longer used for recording, magic can still occur.
The Motown museum is always a great time. There is much history in such a small space, but they really know how to make it come alive! I would highly recommend taking a tour if you have never been there before. Its a must see for any suburban tourist that wants to learn more about the Detroit city! The building has been maintained very well you can tell how much care has been put into that old brick house.
What can say? The feeling of standing where all of the greats played, and where music was changed forever. Such an amazing tour, so informative and stunning. If youre traveling around our awesome city, you NEED to make time to stand in the hallowed halls of Hitsville!
An outstanding museum & preservation of American music history. We visited during the pandemic (Aug 2020) and the guide was warm, welcoming, knowledgeable, and informative. If youre curious at all about where & how all the classic Motown music was made--just go. You wont regret it. Thankful that its been preserved!
Go to Detroit, its a must see!! I Went to the Museum on a Girls Getaway weekend and it was Absolutely Amazing!! The History, the Culture and Staff were all Amazing. I cant wait to go back with my family. Loved It
I grow up with the Motown sound and this day I decided to make this my place to obtain history. So much history shared on Barry and his family, the singers of Motown and the music, it made me want to get up and do the jerk! Guys there are pictures to take, from Smokey to well, just everyone of the Motown entertainers. I did visit the Motown store and couldnt resist buying a few items. Motown, I will be back!
Id rate this 5 stars hands down. Not expensive to enter but the gift shop is a little pricey. But worth it in my opinion. The staff are EXTREMELY polite and kind. And the tour guide Jordan was dope. He knew Motowns history and kept us entertained while we toured. The restrooms are super clean, and they smell good. You could comfortably take a dump. Even security are good. Parking is a little bad and the neighborhood seems a little shaky as does all of Detroit, but all in all, our trip to the museum was worth it. Be prepared you cant take pictures of anything besides Studio A but thats fine. Im a big MJ fan and you can see the sweat/dirt stains on his glove he donated! Again, I would recommend Motown.
OMG!!!! Amazing... So much information! And the young lady who gave the tour was cert good! She knew her stuff! I liked at the end we sung My Girl...I think Barry Gordy will give our group a record deal.. Thank you to my brother Charles Adams!!
Awesome tour of a fantastic historical site. So much cool stuff to see and learn about.
What a nice tour!! Our tour guide was informative and very pleasant. Well worth $15/person. Their building a stage in back, should be finished in a few months so well come back again. Real part of everyones past since so many great singers and music came out of there.
Wonderful experience being in such a historical place!
Awesome place. I got to learn about all sorts of stuff. The tour guide was very helpful and informative. The outside looks small, but the museum is awesome and huge! 10/10. I would recommend going here asap!
My 1st visit here....one word: AWESOME! Our tour guide was great, explaining in detail the Motown history and humble beginnings....a must see for any music fan and historic museum buff. Lots to see and will definitely go again.
I have been a big fan of Motown, since its inception. My friends and I, use to just stand in front of the Motown building, hoping we would get a glimpse at an artist.I will always love Motown Music. Motown set a standard for me, in terms of what good music is. Good music is lasting, every time you hear good music, it makes you feel good. I went to many of the Motown Reviews at the beautiful Fox Theater. What a blast to see the Motown Artist up close. Seeing the young artist on stage performing, looking so polished and professional, let me know as a kid, that accomplishing my dreams was possible as well. The first Motown record that I heard was Shop Around by Smokey Robinson and the Miracles. The beat was magic. I must have played the record 100 times. The Miracles were a group close to my age, i.e., young, they were cool looking, they performed on stage and television and were very attractive. They sang about things that taught me lessons as a young person. Their music also soothe many of teenage wounds. My friends and I had group discussions about Motown. We discussed their record label and if and when they should change it, to discussing business strategies to keep Motown groups together. Overall, Motown music had a message for those whod give their music a listen.May I encourage you to stop by the Motown Museum for a walk down memory lane. You will have a ball.
A nice little journey back through time to the origins of some of the best musicians of all time.
The tour was a little fast paced then what I expected, apart from that everything was pretty cool and the environment and the energy was really healthy and good, it had a nice vibe. I would prefer to go visit again with my friends just to vibe with the place.
Aint to proud to beg! And you know it. Please dont leave me girl!!
This is a must see if you are ever visiting Detroit. The history of Motown and this music. I loved it
Wonderful history on this tour. Carolyn was a phenomenal tour guide and very knowledgeable. I especially enjoyed the studio at the end of the tour. Staff was courteous from arrival to exit. Very good with Covid safety procedures. We had a great time.
Absolutely wonderful experience! Informative guide, so much musical history! You walk in their shadows.
From the security guard to the tour guides, everyone was sharing their knowledge of Motowns Hitsville USA. Very informative, gift shop has a wide variety of items to chose from. Sunday tour worked perfect for something new to explore. Lived here my whole life, and just now taking the tour. Cant wait to return, once the expansion is completed.
The Motown museum is always a great time. There is much history in such a small space, but they really know how to make it come alive!
The best. Employees friendly great museum yo visit in Detroit
$50 Million dollar renovation. Not nearly enough people of color working on the site. How is this possible?Mitown Museum- Detroit- almost nothing but caucasians working on the site? A travesty!Repaired buildings on the left, but ridge still sagging under new shingles. Shoddy workmanship.
Fabulous. A definite must do for all Michiganders +. Great history, music and lots of stuff you never knew. All superbly preserved!!
Very exciting. It takes me back. And where some comfy shoes.
After all these of coming to visit my parents I FINALLY made it. Well worth the wait!!! The museum is very old but they maintain it BEAUTIFULLY. Very clean and set up nicely. The staff is friendly, welcoming and they explain everything. Our tour guide was WONDERFUL, well informed, enthusiastic, & fun!!! She had us laughing, singing & dancing with complete strangers. I suck with names but we were on the 1 p.m. tour today. She made our experience memorable. My mom isnt usually into things like this but she left happy & smiling. She was still talking about it once we got home. Cant wait to come bk with my husband on my next visit
I am visiting from Tampa, FL and so happy I went to visit the Motown Museum. Having worked as a DJ on the radio in North Carolina for almost twenty years this was a great experience. I highly recommend, especially for music lovers.
I visited here in the 1990s? from England when I was visiting my American pen pal Barb & I loved it! Id always wanted to visit but never thought Id get the chance, a dream come true to see where it all started & stand in the places where all the Motown greats stood & performed their musical magic. An iconic building with amazing history. Been there, got the T-shirt! FANTASTIC.
Hitsville is awesome. So much history. Our tour guide was well informed and did a great job. lif you are a music fan you will love thia place.
Nice place to take family to get history of how some musical stars started.
Such a memorable experience. Was amazing to see what a bunch of talent, heart and a dream can become with hard work. A great trip down memory lane seeing the humble beginnings of Berry Gordy evolve into the music and the stars that we know and love. Our tour guide, Tanisha, made the experience even more memorable. Ill definitely be back!
I did the tour of some of the most famous people who came through here. It was a great experience.
Small group tours. Social distancing and masks required. We learned so much about local talent and we sang in studio One!! Well worth the cost. We parked behind the building in a small lot.
It was a Really cool tour!! Got to see where ALL the MAGIC happened!! When in Detroit, do it!!
Very interesting to learn how it started. Yvonne our tour guide was friendly, knowledgeable, and made it enjoyable. I would have liked to hear more about the young artists Mr. Gordy, Jr. found and see some of the costumes. Im so glad I went
Our tour guide really knew the history of the museum. She made sure that she engaged with us and was very personal. It was a great experience.
Wonderful tour. Our guide was spirited, knowledgeable, and sweet. Definitely worth the price of admission. The gift shop had many interesting items, and we purchased several. If you are a true music fan, please add this to your to do list.We are looking forward to the museum addition, and will return in the near future.PS The area is very pretty now. So wonderful to see.
Nice museum and reflection of a very special history!Delightful and gracious staff!
My wife and I had an amazing time during our visit. We had the best tour guide, Rose, and she made our tour very fun and engaging!!!!!!!!!
Awesome this is a museum of not just Black History but whole world history.
We had an amazing time! It was inspirational and informative. I learned a lot about our history.
I liked all the exhibits and everything, but I really didn’t care for the guide who explained every single exhibit. I can read so I likely would have been able to find out whatever I wanted to know by reading the captions. I also felt a bit claustrophobic walking around in here but that may have been due to the large group I was with. I would not recommend going with a large group of people.
This little place blew me away about Detroit. It’s great to see a city sharing its history. If your a Motown lover make sure to pop past and read the history. It’s a busy little area so parking can be difficult, but you can always park nearby and walk. Check it out
Didnt know much about Motown now Im educated very informative
Better than I expected. The tour lasted about an hour and 15 minutes. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and entertaining. You really get a feel for how it was back when Mr Gordy decided to make this happen. It was also very cool being in the original studio where most of the artists actually recorded.Well worth the visit!
Great experience, not expensive a must see in Michigan. Tip...reserve tickets online, they sell out fast. Its a small place. But overall happy I got to go see it.
I’ve been wanting to come here all my life and after finally making it out here, it did not disappoint! The staff was very friendly with an incredible energy and enthusiasm for the significance of what happened here. Thank you to the staff for helping to make this such a great experience
It was a lot if fun and left me wanting much more.
Pretty cool, fairly priced merchandise, can tell its good because they were sold out when we got there.
Another awesome place to visit to learn about our music history. There were a lot of great artist that recorded music there from Stevie Wonder to Temptations to Aretha Franklin and a lot more. While I was there I was thinking that its kind of cool to think that Im walking on the same floors and touched the same walls that these great music artist walked on and touched. So thats why Im giving it a 5-star all the way!
Such a great piece of musical history. Even if you are unable to make it inside just stop by and feel the greatness of some of musics pioneers.
Anyone can tour a museum and read facts. It takes a special tour guide like Tanisha to bring everything to life. The museum is nothing short of iconic and mesmerizing. What are you waiting for?!
Love, love, love! Jamie our tour guide was amazing and the overall experience is a must!
Anyone who rates this anything but 5 stars is absolutely wrong and doesnt fully grasp the importance and significance of this establishment. More so, its a staple of Detroit and affordable for all. While I wish the tours were longer, some of my finest memories of living in Detroit were visiting this place. Hitsville USA is great for everyone... From children to those who grew up listening to Motown establish its roots and sounds and put Detroit on the map for something other than automobiles or a perfect date. Please keep visiting!
It was so amazing....just to be standing rite where many stars have recorded
Was awesome time at Motown museum I did love it
Didnt get to go in because they were sold out, but the outside was very cool and very historic
Lived here my whole life, listened to Motown music my whole life. This was an amazing experience. Surreal, truthfully. Wish we had a little bit more time to look and read everything but hands down best experience as a Motown girl.
This is a place everyone needs to visit lots of historic thing came out of this building. Loved it cant wait to bring my son here to show him all the music I grow up to.
Ask anyone who grew up in Detroit have you been to the Motown Museum and you will get the answer: No. Same with me, 30 years in Detroit and never went. But heres the deal: GO. Its the best one hour $10 you ever spent. A lot of fun and interesting facts you never thought of. And even if you know all the facts and details its so cool to just be in the actual spot where it all happened.
Amazing staff and had the chance to do the tour here which I highly recommend doing if you’d like to dive into the history while singing all the hits !
One of the coolest places I visited the entire time.
We loved getting to learn the history of Motown. We learned so much more then expected. The tour is more then just a tour. The tour guide really loves what she does and really knows her Motown history.
It was an amazing museum. The staff was very knowledgeable and friendly.
Amazing place to visit, to stand in that studio was like nothing else and I had goosebumps! The history was incredible and our guide was very knowledgable and funny. 4 stars as we did feel as though we were rushed through the space. Other then that it was perfect!
I was there last weekend..phenomenal place
Loved it. Best to book your tour online, tickets sell out fast. We have to go back since the tour for Sat. was sold out. The gift store is amazing, right when you 1st walk in, the tour starts on the other side of the wall, it is such a small beautiful house. Stand on the porch and look out over the neighborhood and just let your mind go back in time, CAN YOU JUST IMAGINE?!?!??
They have work to make the experience have safe social distancing. Great story and cool museum!
Excellent tour ; historic information ! Socially distant
Timeless History That Will Never Die Plus Bass Day
Just . An absolute must see.
Really cool experience for music lovers, and our tour guide was engaging and knowledgeable. A must if you are in Detroit. We stood, sang and danced where Stevie Wonder, The Supremes, Marvin Gaye etc recorded albums! Make sure to book a tour ahead of time cause they sell out and then you cant enter the house and studio.
Buy your tickets beforehand. Cannot stress this enough. We got lucky and got the last tickets for the day. The tour was very interesting and our tour guide was top notch. She was entertaining and made the tour more memorable. You can only take pictures in the actual studio and outside. It’s crazy to think how much history was made in this small space.
The great history of motown and is a big part of our life,60 plus years for me how u like me now motown forever.
Love the history lesson. Wonderful
Jordan was a fantastic tour guide! Made our trip very interesting and entertaining. Absolutely fascinating information for those who enjoy and appreciate music.
There are a lot of interesting things to see, so much history and so many great people that work here!
Great experience. Well set up for covid
Our tour guide this last Sunday at 12:30 was fantastic ! My mother and I enjoyed our trip. She had never been there at 69 and was so glad she saw the place. Ending in the studio was so cool. It was great to be in the place that recorded all of her favorite music growing up.
A great historical tribute. I loved every second being there.
It was amazing! Allot of information great experience.
The chance to step back into American Cultural History.....
Pretty cool to be able to stand in the recording studio that so many artists used to record their Motown hits
Small but quaint historic landmark. Nostalgic of Hitsville era of oldies but goodies music days gone by. No photo taking allowed. Limited parking.
As a music lover, it was a great experience to visit the original studio location where some of the most legendary songs were both written and recorded. Our tour guide was very informative about the history of how the record label had evolved from a dream to reality. From seeing some of the authentic memorabilia to touring and getting technical information about the actual studio. Where great artists birthed the famous Motown sound, and played that actual piano... in a garage cum studio... was incredible! I highly recommend this for those looking to explore cultural excellence! A great place to visit for all age groups. Nice gift shop collectibles too.
Great tour. The 16 minute video alone took me back. What memories! I learned some things, and was reminded of things. I didnt realize how well thought the business was, after being created after a single comment after Berry Gordy got a miniscule royalty payment. Studio A, where much of the magic happened was smaller than expected. Without the pictures, its hard to imagine the full groups recording there. Its the only place youre allowed to take pictures. Well worth the time.
Outstanding for tour guide, wonderful journey down memory lane
Very emotional but loved it, thank you Berry Gordy and family
