So glad theyve opened again and are showing some of the wonderful classics. Its not quite on the same level as Its a Wonderful Life but we just saw Young Frankenstein last week! What fun!
What an amazing place. Beautiful inside. They really do a great job restoring and taking care of this place
Great place that shows classic movies, with a live organ player. Very ornate and historic theater.
As an older theater the Redford is very reminiscent of many of the old Detroit style theaters. I was able to enjoy watching a cult classic here, Young Frankenstein, and it felt like a very comfortable, family environment. The theater itself does feel a bit older but it feels more like a family get-together then a business. Many the people running the concessions were older volunteers with family helping to run the place. I would suggest enjoying a night out here.
Such an absolutely Stunning and Magical place! Ive been visiting Redford Theater since 2013, and I couldnt be happier with it! The theater its self is Gorgeous and the staff are just as beautiful. Everyone here is so very kind and wonderful. The showings are always great choices and so nostalgic. The concession is very affordable, although Id love if they had a few Vegan options. The pricing is very reasonable, and well worth it. I would definitely say bring a sweater if you get chilly easy, it can get a tad cold sometimes. Overall if youre looking for an affordable, exciting, and different experience... Than this is the place to go!! ((Go early to not miss anything.)) Have Fun, make Memories, and Enjoy. 10/10 Would Recommend.
A chance to relive the past or experience it for the first time through old movies (some from the 1980s)! The Redford Theatre is a beautifully refurbished location in a little neighborhood with a few great places to check out: the Motor City Java & Tea House a few doors down, the Sweet Potato Sensations Bakery & Cafe across the street and the Old Redford Kitchen & Cafe on a nearby corner.
Elegant theater showing classic ️ $5 movies with $2 concessions and a friendly volunteer crew! Live piano and organ performances before, and during intermission. Bring the family and friends! Lots love here! ️ Tour the projector room!
AMAZING experience! Cheap concession prices that go to helping further the theatre ! AWESOME organ playing before and during the intermission of the show clean bathrooms fast lines! Merchamdise was available for purchase from the show we viewed as well! Highly recommended!
Seats were uncomfortable especially in the balcony but I enjoyed the movie and the theater is very beautiful. I would say go see a movie here but be prepared for some back pain and butt pain especially if your on the heavier side.
My favorite place to see a movie. If youve never been to the Redford theater they show a lot of the classics. Around Halloween nail play a series of horror movies or science fiction thrillers. Around the Christmas holiday they play holiday classics. Many things make the Redford theater wonderful. But something that really sets them apart is their wonderful organ. They play the pipe organ a half an hour before the movie starts and they play it again during a halftime intermission. Tickets are usually only $5 and concessions are very reasonable. They also have real butter for the popcorn. Movies are only on the weekends. I give it my highest recommendation. Look up more info at their website and plan a fun trip to the theater.
Beautifully restored 1928 theater. Shows classic films. Original Barton theater organ played before movie and again during intermission. Excellent concession stand, featuring $2 popcorn with real butter. Most shows are $5. A great all-around experience.
Awesome theater! The inside is like stepping back in time. The organ player was phenomenal. Concessions were very good as well and very low prices for a theater. Everyone working there provided excellent customer service. I will echo what others have said and say that the seats are not the most comfortable, but that was the only negative I can think of. All in all its a wonderful and unique place to visit for the whole family.
There is nothing like seeing classic movies on the big screen again! We absolutely love it here! Prices are terrific!
Great place to see classic movies on the big screen. It is maintained by the Motor City Theater Organ Society. They maintain the historic original 3 manual, 10 rank Barton Theatre Pipe Organ and have members play it before the feature presentation and during in the intermissions!
Best place for anyone hoping to catch a classic movie in a nostalgic atmosphere. Run and attended by true film lovers and the snacks are very inexpensive! I came in February for Casablanca and in August for 2001: A Space Odyssey. Both fantastic experiences!
Bought tickets for an event, the event was rescheduled due to covid, not only was I never informed that the event was rescheduled, I only found out when i looked on their Facebook page. Even though they had my email from when I got the tickets. But when I realized that the event was changed to next year I was sad to see that it was on the same dates I have a wedding to attend to. I reached out and asked for my money back. They refused. For a year later they are unable to give me my money back and resell the tickets? They literally had to add a day to the event because so many people wanted to go. The tickets would resell in no time. I would give them zero stars if I could. I had many events cancelled or postponed due to covid this year and this is the only one that is refusing to give money back! I will never return to this place or recommend them ever again!
A awesome place to go see a show! I went there to see Mosaic Youth theater( lift every voice show), a really great show filled with great music and acting. Great customer service! Parking lot securty was great.
Been going for over 20 years! Great variety in classic movies. Love the occasional stage shows. It’s been fantastical to see the transformation of this theatre to its original glory.
If you like watching old school movies and Three Stooges marathon this is the movie theater for you
A very inexpensive but rewarding experience. Love the historic atmosphere, theater organ performances before the movies, which are always of excellent quality, and the availability of popcorn and other snack. Safe, free parking- it doesnt disappoint.
One of my favorite places.
Gorgeous old style, small theater. Not in the best part of town but parking is close and security is present. Concession prices are good and they use real butter on their popcorn!
Always a great place to spend an afternoon. Theater is a beautiful snap shot of what used to be the movie experience. Big screen and big surroundings. The butter on the popcorn is grest plus to!
The chance to get transported back in time and make it feel like everyone is watching the movie as if its opening night is a magical experience. The organ playing familiar songs is awesome and the ceiling complete with twinkling stars is fantastic. Young and old will enjoy the chance to see this place.
This is a beautiful hidden jewel! Youd expect a theatre like this to be in the suburbs or maybe even downtown but its right in the hood near where I grew up. I remember when I was little I didnt think this place was open/active, and I didnt expect it to be so gorgeous on the inside with the Japanese inspired architecture. They only show old classic films and it doubles as a performance venue!
Such a beautiful building. The wall art is awesome. And they have an organist pre movie and during intermission. Yes, intermission! We saw Casablanca. Oh, and the popcorn......REAL BUTTER. You have to go.
Step back in time. 1929 state of the art. Beautifully maintained. Clean and fun
This location is always beautiful, no matter what. My girlfriend has never been here, but she was pleasantly surprised at the beauty if the Redford! The service at the concession stand was friendly and quick.
Quaint, historic theatre that is a 501c organization run completely by volunteers. Great prices, plays the old and great movies along with some shadowcast movie plays. Tickets for movies are $5, popcorn is $3, pop is $2, candy is $1-$2 for regular or $3 for sugar free. Parking is onsite and free. They have the original organ and a gentleman plays the national anthem as well as some other songs before the show starts. **NOTE: concessions are cash only!**
I have had the pleasure of seeing a couple of movies here. Its pretty amazing to see the pipe organ before the movie starts. And it is super cheap. It is worth checking it out.
Such a Gem, saw the screening of the Aretha Franklin documentary, Amazing Grace! The theater made an excellent venue with all the nostalgia it encompasses. Thanks to the volunteer staff!
Such a great old theatre to watch a Christmas classic in! I highly recommend treating yourself to a movie here. The volunteers do an amazing job of making the night feel special. There is usually an intermission during the viewing with a 50/50 raffel to boot! Bonus stars for fairly priced concessions and having decent leg room for an establishment of its age!
This classic theatre is amazing. A must visit and just a great place to watch a movie. The story of its restoration is equally interesting and heartwarming.
A family tradition of more than 20 years. Always a great lineup of classic films, in a classic landmark venue. Affordable ticket prices (usually $5) and an award-winning concession stand.
Don’t hesitate, just go! The organ music before each show is reason enough to buy a ticket. Support the local art scene and further your status as a cinephile by spending your time/money at this historic gem.
I cant rave about this place enough! The building is gorgeous, the popcorn is delicious and inexpensive, the rotation of movies and shows is always exciting. I always show up early so I can hear the incredibly talented organist play! This is my favorite place to go on a night out by far. :)
The Redford offers a great night out with a hint of nostalgia. I always enjoy the time spent here.
This place is a great place to take a date. Very reasonable prices for everything. A place of historic value!
Love this place! We try to see a Christmas movie here each year. Great ambiance and wonderful people.
The theatre was quite beautiful on the inside with the gilded decor. In particular, the ceiling was especially noteworthy in it being designed to resemble a night sky studded with diamond-like stars and what appeared to be ornate scrollwork occasionally interspersed amongst the tiny stars shining above our heads. The organ player and the organ were also a nice touch as a thirty minute prelude to the start of the movie, Young Frankenstein. The outside with its old style theatre signs and the plastic letters saying what is currently playing was like traveling back in time to the early days of theatre that preceded venues as they are today. All-in-all, the entire theatre is beautifully designed and a welcome homage to an obvious love for classic movies.
A greatly preserved piece of Redford History. Very nice to see an old time Theater being put to good use today.
What a spectacular venue!Enjoyed The documentary about Detroit by Michael Bolton and was thrilled to hear him & Mitch Albom speak of their love for Detroit. And the organ! Wow!
A beautifully restored and maintained architectural gem! Secured parking, and a wonderful and pleasant volunteer staff!
A jewel in the happiness that is retro. Wow factor for your awareness. Visit this gem soon; youll be pleasantly surprised.
Went to the Redford with the wife to see the 1927 silent film Chicago. The theatre is beautiful! The guest organist Ben Model was an absolute treat. I think we spent more time watching him play the Barton pipe organ than the film!Ticket prices and concessions are very reasonable, especially compared to going to a big multiplex. The parking lot security staff are friendly and vigilant. It is very refreshing that the people who work the theatre are so passionate about the place.
Redford Theater is beautiful. Theyre renovating the gorgeous Japanese-style decor. The workers are all volunteers theyre friendly and they have fun things like fund raiser 50/50s, tee-shirts and a cash concession stand. We watched The Princess Bride with the Goblin King Players enacting it on the stage. The actor who played the bishop performed a vow renewal after the show and the actors greeted guests in the lobby after that. Thoroughly enjoyed myself.
Beautiful place. Love it.
The theater was really cool inside, and snacks were very reasonably priced.Plus, with so many people showing up to events, they have specific parking so you only have to feel a little worried about leaving your car unattended in Redford.
A quirky & nostalgic place to see a movie. Beautiful old theater, organ player, intermissions, a master of ceremonies, etc made the location as much of the attraction as the show we saw. As long as youre not expecting modern amenities, I think youll love the charm.
I went there on a first date with a woman I met online. Well oh, it turns out she never bothered to show up!!! But I still enjoyed a fantastic movie that stands the test of time. The 1983 hit The Big Chill. And it was wonderful to see again. The theater itself is a wonderful facility albeit a bit dated. They have a standard selection at their snack bar including candy, popcorn etc etc. Its a little bit tricky for a few people who have walking issues or other such disabilities such as myself. But I managed to do just fine personally and I even explored the upper balconies. The movie was being shown to promote donations for the restoration of the theater itself and I was more than willing to contribute even more than the $5 they were asking. They offer everything from projected films to live theater presentations and operas. Its truly a worthwhile visit if youve never been before. Although a bad taste was left in my mouth regarding my no showing date I have little to complain about regarding the theater itself. The employees were extremely helpful and quite friendly and I do intend to return as I picked up their summer time schedule while I was there. Its a very intimate atmosphere not like todays modern theaters which can be a bit overwhelming at times. And the popcorn was pretty good!!!
Ooooooh, weee! Absolutely perfect! The staff is friendly and accommodating, the prices are great, the film selection and special events are fantastic, and the popcorn is always fresh! Do yourself a favor and catch a film festival from the balcony any time of year...youll be glad you did.
I must say such classic elegance that has been restored and continues. I hadnt been inside this theatre since I was 15 years old. The nostalgia really set in. I there for a first time Community Meeting.
Had a really good time. Theyre really making the place look nice
Love this place! A hidden gem in Detroit. Its completely run by a dedicated group of volunteers and its very budget friendly. A fun date for around $20. Go check it out!!
I love this theatre. Everything about it from the organ music, to the old school intermission and the beauty of the theatre is just wonderful.
A great place to see classic films. Very nostalgic. Very affordable (ticket, popcorn and pop is like $11). All volunteer staff too. Oh the popcorn is made with real butter!
The Redford Theatre is a true gem of a moviehouse. Located in Detroit near the corner of Lasher and Grand River, they have been showing movies here since 1928 and caring restoration work makes this place a time capsule. Come early and hear the original concert organ, play 50/50 and hit the world famous snack bar. Truly a great experience.
What a great way to usher in the Halloween holiday. Fun show, fun cast, fun( and full house) audience. Putting this on my calendar for next year!
This is a great historical theater! It was built in 1928 and restored in the 1980s. It has the original theater organ and shows movies and musicals. I highly recommend that you visit!
Great atmosphere, friendly and knowledgeable volunteer staff, and low cost concessions! Definitely worth going!
Took my Business Partner to see The Wizard Of Oz...one of our favorite classic movies...and we had a great time...and the community atmosphere was just as I remembered it as a child. Great people, great company. Loved the Redford Theater.
Beautiful theater, seats are smaller so be prepared to get to know your seat neighbors a bit more than you might want to, but a lovely venue for viewing.
One of the greatest nights Ive had in a long time. Movies Ive loved since my childhood played on screen like they were when they were first released. The theatre is beautiful, and awe inspiring. The concessions are at an amazing price, and the staff are all really friendly and willing to help. 10/10 would recommend and plan on many visits in the future.
Great restoration of an old time theatre. We have been going here for years and always have a great time. The 3 Stooges Festival is a great event for the whole family. Snacks are fresh and prices are very low. The hot dogs were a nice touch. Be sure to visit and support this theatre so it continues to be open for a long time.
This is a historic movie palace that Im always excited to visit. Tickets and concessions are very affordable and all the money goes back into the theater, helping to preserve this volunteer run landmark. Its also one of the few theaters in the area left that still plays 35mm film prints (not every screening is film but they still use it more than any other theater around here). Not every screening goes perfectly and some wear and tear is starting to show in their otherwise excellent ceiling and decor but thats all the more reason to support the place and help it last another 100 years.
This place is AMAZING! If you can afford it; please support their restoration!
Beautifully restored. Fun atmosphere. Great for families. Well be back often!
My fist time at The Redford Theater was a pleasant one. My fiancee wanted to sit in his geandfathers chair and watch three stooges. The manager was really helpful in locating the chair number. We got to sit in his chair. The popcorn is pre popped and they add real butter when you ask for butter. I think it made it a bit soggy, but other people seemed to really love it. It all depends on who you are. The overall experience was a good one.
Returned to Old Redford area for the street fair and entertainment. This group of performers were great.
Beautiful theatre. Saw Big on the big screen. Felt like I was seeing it the first time. I loved that there was an intermission so I was able to use the bathroom and explore the balcony.
I love the old time vibe of this place! Makes me feel that I have stepped back in time.
My boyfriend and I have been visiting the charming Redford Theatre and introducing people to it for years. We keep the schedules they hand out at the door- and we make sure to see our favorites when they play, as well as other times going in blind. I’ve never been disappointed-We are hooked on the film with shadow cast events especially-They host events for all ages and keep the spirit of the theatre tradition alive and well in metro Detroit. Make it a point to support this establishment, and the small army of volunteers who love the theatre, and make the magic happen there.
Its such a fun and unique experience!
I love the Redford Theater. Great old movies on the big screen where they belong. We just went to see the 1925 silent movie Phantom of the Opera, accompanied by the Redfords beautiful theater organ. Reasonable prices for movies and snacks. Beautiful old neighborhood theater. Secure parking next door. Oh, be sure to try Sweet Potato Sensations across the street!
Great community. Organ, MC and even an intermission. Special night.
Love this place. the area around the theater can be a little rough looking but dont be intimidated by that. parking is secure and the area is actually very welcoming. not to mention what a gem this theater is. I always show up early to hear the Barton organ and never miss a 3 stooges festival, Halloween extravaganza and the train set up at Christmas. what a magical place...and the theater is in the horror movie called it follows to boot. what a beautiful theater...i highly recommend you stop by fir a visit.
Redford theater is a great place to watch a movie. The theater is very old but looks good inside.
Love the whole ambiance of the place. From the old seats to the old bathrooms, the organ and the old movies. Hope this theatres around forever.
I loved that there was so much parking available! The show was phenomenal and I will be back!Remember that any concessions or merch is CASH ONLY!
Came here to see Hocus Pocus with the Goblin King cast and was so happy with my experience. The Redford Theater is so beautiful, the staff is accommodating and helpful. The popcorn was delicious and the show was just as great. I cant wait to come back!!
Just an absolutely fun experience. Old school atmosphere. Lots of classic movies playing. Cheap concession.
Great place to watch a old classic movie the way it was meant to be watched
Fantastic place to see old movies and new plays and musicals
Love this theater! They have done a beautiful job on the renovations and it is operated with all volunteers. The original seating feels a little skinnybut thats part of the experience. It has a Asian motif and twinkling night sky and a live organist playing the Star Spangled Banner before the show along with other tunes as well as at intermission. They have different themed shows playing throughout the year...ie silent film with the organ accompaniment, classic cartoons from the 30s-70s and at Christmas the old classics like White Christmas and Its a wonderful life. Worth going to once just to experience the old theater.
Consistently a great time for me and my family. Fantastic concessions, friendly atmosphere, and, of course, classic movies on the big screen. Im able to share with my elementary aged son an experience that I loved growing up. The organ music prior to the show and shared love of great movies by the volunteers who operate this Detroit gem make this an experience not to be missed. Christmas movies, Three Stooges and animation festival are now traditions for our household.
I havent been it look nice passing by
The Redford is an institution of Detroit. Every visit is a night to remember. Most recently we attended the showing of Princess Bride. From the first row to the balcony, there isnt a bad seat in the house. Get there early and listen to the pipe organ being played. If I have a choice of spending $50 at a Star theatre or going to the Redford, its always going to be the Redford.
Very cliquish group of people. I used to belong to the North Rosedale Park players which are no more and heard that they joined this theater, however, I came there to try out for a play and they put me through a lot and didnt even say thank you or follow up with me afterwards in a timely manner.
Loved the double feature, the movie, The Five Heartbeats and the documentary, The Making of The Five Heartbeats, narrated by Robert Townsend. Following the latter, Robert was interviewed by Kelley on stage, which was followed.by questions from the audience.
Love the organist the movie the whole Ambience of the extremely old and believe 1925 its been up and running ever since its beautiful have to go
Ive been coming here since 1986 (when I was 17!) and it is a rare and wonderful gem in the D. From classics to live shows to The Three Stooges Festival (my favorite), its a magical place to forget your troubles. And I cant forget the pipe organ; how fun! The concession stand is unbelievably affordable and its all run by super friendly volunteers. I also like the emcees and their film commentary. I lived in Pittsburgh for five years and theres nothing like that there. We are so lucky to have this venue. Bring your friends and relax.
Really neat place to take the family for Christmas outing
Wonderful atmosphere, shows old/classic, or popular seasonal movies. Original organ gets played before the movie and during intermission which is pretty neat. Popcorn with real butter is amazing. Unique and really cool experience.Seats arent super comfy but theyre part of the ambiance.
The Redford Theater is a great place to catch a classic movie. This year, weve seen My Fair Lady (1964) and Jurassic Park (1993). The theater was built in 1928 and has a beautiful interior - not your typical movie house! Tickets are typically $5 and they have refreshments for a few dollars a piece.
Step into one of Detroits finest theaters and enjoy a night out in the outstandingly preserved building.
Beautiful theater and rich in history.
The theater how it has always been meant to be enjoyed. Comfortable seats, great prices, and polite staff make this one of my favorite places to be. The organist is amazing and always brings a smile to our faces. Thank you, Redford Theater, for all you do.
