Beautiful traditional movie theater attached to the Detroit Institute of Arts near downtown Detroit. Hosts classic and contemporary cinema. The annual showing of Oscar nominated animated and live action shorts is not to be missed. The DFT also shows Oscar nominated documentaries. One of the few venues where you can see the non-blockbuster movies that are up for Academy Awards.
My 5 stars is due to the beauty of the theatre and the film quality. The seating was comfortable but a very tall man might not agree. Parking was challenging as was the wait for the womens restroom. Still loved it.
Great staff and great movies that you will not see anywhere else. The Crystal Lounge is not worth the trip up the stairs. If you find something thats worth buying, it will not be available the next time youre there.
DFT gets five stars for a clean, beautiful 1920s theater, first class films, and a very sizable interior with comfortable seating. The pic is from the last row of the main floor. I could see perfectly. Parking can be a problem but then again, it is everywhere in the city.
A fantastic theatre with a great staff. Not a bad seat in the house. And there are always great shows at affordable prices.
Beautiful theater, lots of history, included an entertaining emcee. Great staff from ticket sales to ushers. I should definitely go more often.
Really cool theatre - sit towards center anywhere (lower and upper levels) for the best viewing experience. Ambience alone makes it a great venue.
Simply the best movie venue in Michigan with season after season of incredible independent movies and documentaries. The Crystal Gallery meeting and eating hall is likely the grandest such chamber outside if Europes grand Halls. As part of the DIA you have something to see beforehand too
I watch the Oscars Shorts here this year - an absolutely stunning theater. It was a wonderful viewing experience.
As always, a great venue for Indie and some mainstream movies. Tonights visit was for the Oscar Short films and it didnt disappoint.
We had a really nice at the end of African American history month Monica Blair she was awesome Too.
Went to see the Detroit Youth Choir and they were Spectacular!!! I see why they were so close to winning on AGT!!! Keep up the great work, young ladies and gentlemen!!!
Wonderful gem in the city. International films (subtitles), noirs, classic cartoons. Such a pot o gold for film buffs. No recliners here. As a matter of fact the seats are small and legroom is a fleeting thought. Still well worth it. Did I say the price is great?
What a great place, right here in our backyard. Staff is very friendly and very helpful.
What a jewel, went with some friend for the first time to watch short nominated skits..I will definitely visit this theater again.
Watching Oscar Nominated Shorts - Animated and Live Action. Some very good animated ones that reach you at an emotional level, especially Sister and the alzheimer one.
I love this theater. It has good views from most seats, and the architecture is beautiful.
True gem in the heart of Detroit, great movie selection and cozy old fashioned theater .Youll find yourself out of this time .
Always great to get down to DFT. One star deducted for no popcorn though.
The DIAs classic era theater was the perfect place to view the academy award short nominees!
Beautiful place to watch movies! Just like the good old days
The best place in Michigan to see film prints projected. Digitally projected movies are much better here than at the mulitplexes because they actually have someone working in the booth.
Fun times watching Talking Heads Stop Making Sense. Great staff! Lovely theater.
What can you say about something thats free and fun and wonderful for the whole family The Detroit film theater is an excellent venue to watch movies with a staff that cares about the people that come.
Gorgeous theater and they always have interesting &entertaining movies that you wont/cant find anywhere else
Beautiful theater. A smaller version of the Fox Theater.
I was at the Detroit Mosiac production. About their trip to Africa. It was an excellent play. This is a historic place always clean always had an excellent customer service staff. Parking is close for $7. Go to website for film festival you will see movies that are only talked about on award shows. Very unusual films .
Totally awesome experience, staff could be a little nicer, the parking lot is sufficient.
Nostalgic like the films offer re d
Always enjoy DFI -important part of Detroits history.
Just saw one more great film tonight - Angels Are Made of Light
Great ambiance beautiful building every seat feels close to the screen...tradeoff is cramped leg space, at least on the upper balcony. Didnt check out seats in main level
Amazing venue and unique films.. Always a treat
Excellent, Oscars nominated short films week.
Great documentary of entertainer Sharon Jones, provided by WDET
Great. However no food permitted in theater.
I was at the premiere of the, Amazing Grace Aretha Franklin movie. The movie was an exhilarating emotional experience like only Aretha Franklin can deliver. It will be in Theaters April 19th. I highly recommend it.
Love the unique movies, love the atmosphere, the volunteers are always so nice
Great place to see the Oscar Shorts
Best theatre to watch a movie. The sound is perfect.
Went to go see Michoacan to Michigan excellent show
Watched the Oscar nominated shorts, excellent!
Weve seen many films and other productions at THE DFT. Its a classic, beautifully maintained theatre. The film series they run there every year is absolutely terrific. We saw the live Sam Glass produced A Thousand Thoughts documentary with and about the Kronos Quartet there just last night. It fit the theatre perfectly and was a wonderful show.
Great films in an historic theater.
Fantastic venue: love Queen Aretha
I love the seating in there comfortable... Leg room... Great service.. I enjoy it
Great place to showcase your plays, recitals, musicals and graduations and films/documentaries...beautiful venue
Great performance by Monica Blaire
Great time saw a movie on Cats. It was totally a lot of fun.
The theater is beautiful. The entire movie going experience was great inside the DIA. Outside the parking was difficult. The lot off of John R. was extremely backed up and slow to enter. Unfortunately, I lost my patience and parked on the street next to the lot. Unbeknownst to me there were two parking meter stations that were very difficult to notice. Not being a regular visitor to the DIA I thought my luck was great to have found a free parking spot. Unfortunately, my luck was bad and I received a $45 parking ticket... cant blame anyone but me.
Good selection of interesting films, good pricing, and the Oscar Shorts event is always a great time.
I enjoy coming to The DFT with great sight lines and acoustics
Beautiful theater. Awesome play, The Diary of Anne Frank.
Cat Video Fest. Need I say more?
First rate! Excellent
Beautiful theater, plenty of parking and they have great shows. But the seats are not very comfortable.

Films you wouldnt usually see.
Michoacan to Michigan was a tribute to all immigrant families.
