Eh..... food wasnt great and prices were way too high.Youd think the prices were more to make up for the entertainment, but cover for entertainment is $15 more during shows.Entertainment was good, but WAY too loud where we couldnt even yell at each other during dinner. Not so sure well be going back...
LOVE Cliff Bells! Always have to swing in there any evening I’m in Detroit! They made me this great drink with some sort of blueberry and rosemary that I requested to be non alcoholic and it was GREAT, and our server was very friendly. Also, great jazz music of course! Foods great, a little pricey but - worth it.
Incredible experience. Very cool people working there, fun vibes. A dimly lit Jazz bar, what more could you as for? :)Only thing was that they brought the check and cleared the table a little early. Thats a compliment tho, in a way.
Friendly environment, Straight Ahead jazz group was playing and they were great. Ladies restroom was clean, social distancing was in place, nice ambiance, low lighting with candles on the table, great wait staff. Only drawback was the kitchen was closed, and its was just a few minutes after 11pm.
I called for a reservation for me and my wife and they seat us at the bar. But I wasnt even tripping bout that, just lil weird. Ok so we at the bar and sat there for 20 mins and not a waiter, waitress, or bartender said ONE WORD to us. The bartender kept telling us to wait a minute and I counted, the waitress walk by 34 times and aint say NOTHING. Seriously I felt invisible. Not sure if it was because Im black and my wife is Indian, I really hope it wasnt. Well we left and trust will never be back. Hope everyone else has better luck there then we did.
Very expensive food for small portions. $68 per person for a four-course meal. If you decide to choose a la carte the portion sizes are kids portions, only go for the entertainment. Entertainment is good. Sorry Cliff bills couldnt give you a higher score
This place has a nice romantic tone and the live band was awesome. Our food was delicious!!
We had a great evening at Cliff Bells, atmosphere was what you would expect for an old school jazz club. What you dont expect is great food. We went to see our son play with his HS jazz band and decide to make a dinner date out of it. The food was awesome. I had the filet, it was tender, seasoned right and cooked perfectly. We stayed a little after my son played to hear the band and we couldnt have had a better evening.
We went out for a Detroit Prohibition Tour, which started out at Cliff Bell’s. I’d never been there, so it made sense to all meet for dinner before our tour began. Loved the music, the “feel” of the place, and the food. Mac n cheese was very good, but the duck wings were my favorite! Will definitely be back!
The atmosphere is the only reason to visit, live jazz and soft lighting make for a good place for friends to hang. Food is pricey for small portions and drinks are better at sports bars.
Ive always wanted to go to this jazz club and Im so glad we finally did! I always imagined a larger interior, but its actually quite reasonably sized and I think thats a good thing. The Aral Sea Divers were playing and they were very cool. Service was nice but a tad slow, but then again our group wasnt ordering that much. I cant recommend Cliff Bells enough for some jazz appreciation or a super cool spot for a date night! The wife and I plan to go back soon to try their yummy looking food.
Elegant! Great atmosphere! Live jazz music, cant go wrong there!!
Very nice little cozy place to mingle during covid.
Visited on a wednesday i think. the service was very friendly and attentive. it has a cool interior.
They did a FANTASTIC job hosting my boyfriend’s birthday. The band was decent. The food..AMAZING! I had salmon and he had prime rib. They even gave him a cake with a candle since I didn’t get to pick mine up. I’m behind impressed at how great our waitress was. I don’t remember her name unfortunately but I’ll be back again!
Fascinating jazz bar with a long history in Detroit. The owner came over and gave us the background on the bar, the different owners, and the long effort to restore it to its former glory. Beautiful inside, with the atmosphere of the long-ago elegant supper clubs. Their food is wonderful and the jazz bands are fun to listen to.
Amazing place for dinner! Excellent food, service and atmosphere.
Great place for live music and an old school relaxed feel. Staff here is incredibly kind and friendly. I make a point to visit this place everytime I am in Detroit. Truly a great stop for food and drinks. Great happy hour specials. The only thing I would change is to add more vegan / plant based foods to their menu.
Always love coming here. The performances are always top notch. My only complaint is the placement of one of the bathrooms. One of the bathrooms requires you to walk on the stage... It SUCKS to see quality entertainment and someone rudely walking on the actual stage the performers are on. Extremely happy with ething else, tho.
Beautiful place, talented people, great food!
Walking into this bar felt like stepping into a bygone era. The interiors and beautifully restored to their former glory. The lighting, art work and furniture are all stunning. The staff were friendly, attentive and service was swift with old world charm. The cocktail menu is extensive and the drinks we had were delicious. There was light jazz with beautiful sounds being playing in the background. It was great for an after dinner drink like we had but looks like it would be stunning for dinner too. I hope to return again in the future. Really glad we stumbled across this gem.
Cocktails are great and the music is always good.
My 1st time there will definitely not be the last great food GREAT!!!!! and friendly staff.
The music was top notch. Ive been to Cliff Bells several times but the first time Ive had dinner. The dining experience was 9 out of 10. The only reason I didnt give it a 10 was the fact that we asked for more bread to consume the remaining gravy from the steak tips appetizer the server said that it would be an additional $2. Dont get me wrong, $2 is not a lot, but for a restaurant to charge for in this case, 3 pieces of bread, where most of the entrees are $30+ is not what my experience has been with higher end restaurants.
I love love love Cliff Bells. The ambiance is amazing. The music is usually great. The food is fabulous. Cannot recommend it more. If you are in Detroit, must go. Hopefully there is a great band or a show that night as well.
The environment here is great and the music was spectacular. The server was very nice and helpful in helping me pick out a wine selection, and the staff was very friendly. The food is quite pricey, but delicious, and definitely a great place if youre just looking to have some drinks and listen to great music.
One of my favorite jazz clubs.
A great place to enjoy good food and entertainment
Show was great. Atmosphere is great. Service was terrible (more like one star): took 15 min to get 1st round and it wasnt very busy. Prices are pretty steep for so/so drinks. Go during their Happy Hour would be my advice as there are better spots to drop this kind of $.
Went with another couple. Food, Atmosphere, entertainment, drinks all outstanding..My 2nd time here.Bit pricey,( and you have to pay for parking). But that is what one would expect at a great place.
Went here on a Saturday night for a drink. I sat at the bar and had a great view of the live jazz music on stage. The beer menu was above my expectations. I did not eat but from the looks of the menu the food would be expected to be top notch. All in all this place has a great atmosphere and defiantly worth the time to check out.
They showcase some really amazing local musical talent! Great place for a date night. I would go here for the drinks, live music and ambiance. Food not so much.
Located just a few steps from the fox theater, this is an outstanding place to go back in time. You expect to see Sammy Davis Jr or Dean Martin walk around the corner. The food was outstanding, but the portions are a little small by today’s standards. The wait staff is professional and friendly. I will return.
Food was higher prices, buy also of higher quality. Had the wedge salad and was very pleased with the meal. Enjoyed the live music in an atmosphere that u right out of the late 1930s.
I absolutely love the rich building. The ceilings, the murals, the history. I love that they brought the building back to its former glory. We love catching live music here while grabbing a bite to eat. The first time we ate here we were not expecting much, we were there for the show not the food. We were so surprised at how great everything was and at such great prices. My hubby got a Wagyu steak for $50 and it is one that he still raves about years later after many a Wagyu steaks at much higher prices elsewhere. Everything we have eaten here since has been just as good and it is always such a wonderful time no matter if you go as a couple or in a group.
Cliff Bells is a beautiful taste of days gone by. The art deco flavored club has been washed with gold, serves a good crab cake and good jazz. Check out the website for helpful specifics.
Went for my birthday and had an ok time. I was told I didnt need reservations but then ended up at a table in the back with obstructive views. $10cover was not a huge deal but food was overpriced.
Cool place. Went there for a wedding reception on the second floor. Great view, service was excellent. Plenty of room, bar service made great drinks. Worth checking out for an event. Easily had 100 people in there with plenty of space.
Great food and ambience. The live band isnt so loud you cant have a conversation. Try the cheesecake fir dessert. It is really good!
Great jazz, great food, great atmosphere! Staff was exceptionally courteous and Resy reservation system was very easy to use to guarantee my table. Highly recommend!!
Holy smokes what to write...food...great ... service... fabulous... cocktails.. masterfully crafted.... music This is the Detroit I always knew was there, Ive always loved it, now everybody else will too because of the places similar to this one!! Old, new, sentimental and fabulous Detroits Cliff Bells
What an amazing and legendary establishment here in Detroit. This is where you go when you want real jazz and real class. Great service, amazing decor and ambiance. Best live jazz in Detroit.
Terrell is amazing server! He took great care of our group. This club is beautiful and takes you back to another time. Hopefully they never change a thing. ️
The best dinner in the D on a Tuesday night.Four of us laughed and had the good food with a marvelous female waitress, cant remember her name, but she had great recommendations and her personality helped to make it. Chicken was well worth it and the waffle dessert is worth a trip.
I felt like I was stopping back into time in entering this place. The glow of the lights, the decor and the music made for a wonderful atmosphere. The place was great and worth an evening. My date, however, missing a marble or two..
We had a group of 12 that just happened to walk by and stop in after hitting a few other bars downtown and man I wish we would have went there earlier what a cool place. Unfortunately we wasted 3 hours at rusted crow that I wish we would have spent here. Cool place and we had a wonderful waiter we will be back for certain
Nice place, full of history, good drinks and live music. I was really diggin the jazz music tonight.
Cliff Bells is a jazz club in Detroit, Michigan which is located at 2030 Park Ave. It originally opened in 1935, and it is named after John Clifford Bell, an entrepreneur in Detroit in the 1930s. Its a great place to relax, people watch and listen to great music. Its a speak easy type feel, dimly lit with lit of little details throughout. Service can be a bit slow so come prepared to relax and enjoy the music.
I have been to Cliff Bells five times and it is a very nice venue. The food is good but a little pricey thou. But the added cost is to pay for the jazz performances that they have going on every night. The performers that they have are usually top notch and are very entertaining. Just a heads up you will have to have a reservation to get into Cliff Bells they dont talk walks ins many times. The only negative is Cliff Bells on one side of the restaurant is right next to the getto and then downtown is around it as well. It is in downtown but very close to the ghetto areas so just be alert and watch your surroundings. When I come to Cliff Bells I usually just get an appetizer and a drink and just watch the entertainers.
I enjoyed Clifton Bells. The ambiance and music was relaxing and enjoyable. The food was great. They have great brunch. I would visit again and recommend going here for brunch. Nice experience.
Love this place! Live music, delicious food and hand crafted drinks! Would highly recommend.
Excellent live music and food!
Lovely jazz club in downtown Detroit, close to the major sporting venues. Make sure to take advantage of their great happy hour M-F. Also a great place for brunch on Sundays!
Entering Cliff Bells, the first thing that strikes you is that it resembles a David Lynch movie set. The unusual bar seats with mini cocktail tables and a stage design that begs Dennis Hopper to immortally return for a sequel. I enjoyed a perfect negroni under dim lights by a great bartender who knew when to engage in conversation and when to disappear. I plan to return to hear music and dine . . . this visit was my first, my rating is based solely on the ambiance and cocktail. I loved it.
A few of us decided to find a jazz club after a work meeting on a Friday night and we were told this was the place. It was awesome, the Jazz trio was great, the atmosphere was romantic (not in a date way, although it could be) but in the way the place is set up, the lighting, the bar and the history. It was a step back in time, the art deco, the wood ceilings, the ladies powder rooms and my favorite, the hidden cove to walk in. Great scotch and bourbon selection too.
Best Jazz place in Detroit. The craftsmanship of the clubs interior is exceptional and definitely conducive to the old speak easy charm of atmosphere of days gone. The food always very well presented and flavor for days, stop in you will love it. * * Special mention, staff with integrity !!
Fabulous Art Deco decor, smooth jazz, great food and good drinks! The waiters were friendly, fast and attentive. Whats not to like at Cliff Bells?
Great food & burlesque dancers
The atmosphere at Cliff Bells is really cool: curved walls, copper colored coved ceilings and cozy seating. The drinks are well prepared and high quality. On stage was a band that complimented the atmosphere.
This is how a jazz bar should look and feel. The drinks are artisanal. The talent is up and coming.
Vintage atmosphere in a classy little jazz club. Food is high end of the taste scale, prices are upper middle end of the scale. Service is good but not great - they try hard and are nice. I especially like the bar here it blends so well with the rest of the decor. You might have a little trouble finding Cliffs, but just remember that it is behind the Filmore/Fox.
Food is fantastic! Service is horrible! DO NOT GO IF THERE IS AN EVENT AND YOU WANT ANY TYPE OF SERVICE. Twenty percent gratuity was automatically applied so our sever only visited our table about 5 times throughout the four courses. I saw her tasting customers drinks with a straw at the bar. She was annoyed when we asked for refills. Again, the food and band were terrific on NYE. Service was the worst.
We adore this place. Beautifully restored and gorgeous bar. The live music is great, and the drinks are wonderful too!
One of the hippest jazz club and restaurant in Detroit. The Young Lions in the Big D are carrying on the legacy. I enjoy performing there. Jazz Iz Cookin! The food and the service is on the money. George V Johnson Jr
Very nice club with big bar with an excelent assortment, good food, very nice and friendly service. Sound is good, too. you can have places very near or at the stage.
Old school jazz bar. I enjoyed my sazerac and the music.
Great music and atmosphere, and nice drinks at a decent price! High recommendations.
Amazing jazz club! Great service and awesome music!
This was my first experience here, l went for Sunday brunch and I absolutely loved it the environment, staff, and food wonderful.
Great decor, good service- but tasteless food. I had the fagoli soup- it left a lot to be desired. Bland but filling. For the main entree, I had the stroganoff. The meat tasted like it had been cooked days ago and added to the meal at the last minute. I know not everything is fresh to order but I just don’t get the sense the food is fresh. The meat was hard and had that sitting in a fridge taste. Good music!
Awesome experience! The server was beginner but he was very kind and helpful. Jazz band w s awesome. The food is more like a classic French cuisine with a little twist to it. I was little disappointed with the streak tho. Will not order it again.
Loved the food. The Filet was to die for! Beautiful Interior, feels fancy and like home at the same time. The Jazz trio set a great tone for the night. Definitely a place Id visit again.
It was so cozy, and very friendly. layed back. great cocktails.
Wow wow wow ! What a spot. Excellent music, excellent service, great staff and great atmosphere. What a timeless place. We were in Detroit for the night, and popped in here as we saw live jazz music and what a great idea it was.Food was excellent too. I would recommend the Mac and cheese 100%.. best Mac and cheese I have had.I want to visit Detroit to come here again... great spot.
Great atmosphere! Friendly staff. Nice place for families to eat and enjoy jazz music.
Classy atmosphere and great drinks.
Such a lovely venue. The building has a downtown speakeasy vibe and the crowd and staff were great!
It smelled like fish as soon as we walked in. Then by the bar there was some sewer gas issue that was incredibly offensive. Service was terrible and slow. We ordered two drinks and the truffle fries. It took 15 minutes for our drinks and they were sports bar quality at best, not strong and $13 each. 35 minutes later, after we ask about our fries, we are told they are sold out. The bill for those two drinks and truffle fries was 37.00. #nuts #notworthit The place felt like it needed new management, new investment, new interior design and a new menu. The second star I am giving this review is because the venue concept is cool and the place is a classic location in Detroit. It has potential but needs a lot of TLC, asap.
Overrated. Food portions very small for the price.
A Detroit tradition that is still charming with very nice wait staff and great food. Went for breakfast, will definitely go again.
If youre in the mood for Jazz, this is the oldest jazz club in Michigan, and a very reliable spot. I have been to Cliff Bells dozens of times, and enjoyed it each and every one. There is some times a cover, and the meals are in the higher-end range, however the chef sets the menu, which changes frequently... And yes, this place has a chef rather than a cook, and the meals look and taste accordingly :)
A wonderful time was had in this historic place. Yvette Norwood-Tiger performance was legendary. My friends enjoyed their food. I wish they would have more vegan options that didnt include potatoes. I had gnocchi which was good, I am just not a fan of potatoes
Cliff Bells is an extremely cool spot. Food is outstanding, atmosphere is great, and whether youre a jazz fan or not, the music sets the tone and takes you back in time. This is a great spot for date night and special occasions. Food is pricey, but its worth it. Highly recommend.
A little slow and a lot expensive, the lamb chops were thin, but full of flavor. Great wine selection.
