Nice park. We walked the trail to the grotto. Beautiful walk in the woods. Need sturdy shoes and a walking stick would be great. Be careful with little ones as there are steep places and no railing. Lots of nature as mushrooms and shelf fungus are everywhere. Restrooms are open near the playground. Playground looks nice. Walk around the lake to see the frogs, turtles and fish.
Park is well maintained lots of trash cans around, beautiful place to have family gatherings with each picnic area having lots of parking. But the outhouse at our was unusable! And so we had to drive down the hill to one that was down over the hill with not even a graveled path to walk on, I walk with a cane and this is not very handicap friendly! Surely you can afford to upgrade this. I would also be afraid to use the restroom by myself anywhere close to dark! You can do better than this!
So peaceful. I love going for walks there. It is my alone time with God. Perfect way to start a day!
Very pretty park, lots of shelters to choose from and a great walking path around a pond
Not a bad park, very steep portions keep you focused
Amazing place to relax and bring the family. If you have any questions related to the park, I would call ahead, especially with COVID-19 procedures in place. Staff are very respectful and helpful.
Pretty area, but bathrooms need to be closer to some of the picnic area, especially with older people around.
Very nice county park with several activities available: hiking, biking, skate park, picnic shelters, and a decent little par 3 golf course, among other things. Just remember that you cant get there from Coonskin Drive itself anymore and youre set.
Had a great time except for the bees at shelter 14.
Coonskin is good recreational area for our community. It could be managed better. For example, great trail for biking and walking to downtown Charleston, but the excavation equipment has prohibited our access.I have to carry my bike over mud and water to access the trail. Just a 3’ path of boards would open the trail. Sorry I am biking elsewhere.
Great grounds, plenty to do for everyone. Pool was closed when i went, but everything else was open
A fantastic way to spend the day! Short drive from Charleston, many opportunities for hiking, walking, jogging, and picnicking. Different types of shelters available. Golfing near entrance, skate park and playground!
Took kids to tennis courts to play altered badminton. Had a great time!
Coonskin has changed a lot since I was going there since early 70s. Still a great place. Saw 2 family soldiers off to deployments to middle east. Both are WV Army National Guard. One is seasoned veteran and one is first time deployed. A great place to celebrate their deployment of service with BBQ and family fellowship.
Nice, and flat disc golf coarse but they do charge 3$ per person. Many other activities including a golf coarse that runs along with the disc golf coarse. That could be problematic on a crowded day. Huge pool is present on the grounds but not sure the cost of swimming per day. Nice facilities at the park. All and all a good place to take the family for activities or a picnic.
Great driving range. Well maintained
Nice trail, shaded, some heart pumping elevation but not too bad.
Great place, especially this time of year, to shake the winter blues. It was cold today but sunny and hardly a cloud in the sky. Lots of outdoor activities to do ... hike, bike, golf, fish, picnic, plus playgrounds for the little ones and a skate park and soccer field for the older ones. The pond is a great place to introduce small children to waterfowl. You should avoid feeding bread, chips, crackers, cereal, or sweets to the ducks and geese. Corn, oats, frozen peas thawed, lettuce, just to name a few.*** Note: Just a comment on the previous review from S. Ewing... He states that a hiker should not venture too far off the trails and cites wildlife ie. bears, bobcats, and mountain lions as the reason. Bears?, yes, but you are not likely to see one. Bobcats, maybe, but a very high probability of not seeing one (plus they would pose no danger to a human and therefore sighting one would be a rare treat). Mountain lions? You could spend your entire lifetime with the express purpose of getting even a glimpse of a mountain lion in Coonskin Park or anywhere in the entire state or region for that matter, and the likelihood of seeing one would be virtually zero. Actually there is no definitive proof that mountain lions exist in WV.
There are large park as picnic, skateboard, soccer, walking by excise, for summer ride small boat & fishing, playground, tennis. The road closed on Coonskin Dr. close to Capital High school & go mart store. They already made road, building & fences at National guard Army. Im disappointed road block. Have to drive highway 79/ exit Mink Shoals then right North 119 / Elkview, 3 min to arrive coonskin park.
A wonderful place to hike around. If you are looking for the exact location of the grotto/waterfall put these coordinates into google maps: 38°2305.4N 81°3429.9W. Its just off the Mary Knight or Oak trail. You can enter off Henry C. Shores Dr. and enter the road that states Areas 6-20 (38.383639, -81.580449). You will see benches on the left and can park there (38°2306.8N 81°3440.5W). Walk on the dirt road which curves around the right but dont follow it all the way to the building. Once the you see the building at the same level as you, head towards the first set of coordinates towards the grotto and youll see some stairs which give access. :-)
Lovely and well organized park with many options for all patrons. The disc golf / ball golf course is well kept and very reasonably priced. The pond and areas around it are beautiful and relaxing. Very nice turf field that is often in use by local high schools. Tenis courts are available outdoors along the main road
Awesome place for the whole family
Great place for an evening walk
Beautiful scenery, clean and cozy atmosphere. Love going to just drive around and breathe in the surrounding s. They have a decent golf course, paddle boats that you can rent . The oak room is available for the public for rental fees, for special occasions. Great people.
Great place for photography sessions!
Coonskin is always a great axe to be with both hiking and biking trail.
Beautiful. Quaint. Nice park for Charleston. I mean reviews are supposed to be kept to a local mindset right? So its not Yellowstone. But a nice park none the less!
Awesome! Scenic. A great day. A great park and recreation center.
Love to walk and picnic here. Always went as a kid to ride bikes. Fairly quiet and clean.
Very nice family friendly
The park and play ground was well keep.
Our 2yo daughter got to play with some good kids, nice people and the playground looked pretty well kept.
It was difficult to find the trails, then when hiking was not quite sure if we were still on the trail. I did not enjoy this experience at all and was disappointed.
Ive been here several times now, Im not crazy about the new entrance, why the lack of a star. Otherwise nice park and its great to see improvements being made.
Nice pool family friendly nice staff
We fished and walked around while my two boys played and had fun at the park right behind the pond. It was beautiful and relaxing free and we cant wait to go again. I really wish the old entrance would reopen... We have to travel a whole 15 minutes out of the way:/ but still very nice.
If youre visiting for the first time in a while, be sure and use your GPS to get there. They recently had to close the former entrance and build a bridge on the opposite end as the new entrance. So, getting there is completely different than it used to be.On a more personal note, my wife and I first met at a church event at this park. So if youre single and looking to get hitched, go there... or better yet go to church!
Eageles motorcycle club picnic
Any time Im there its nice always take my kids there for the play ground and pond
Coonskin is a great place to walk. There are several different areas to walk so it never gets boring. The pool is okay. Its needed a good pressure washing for years though.
They need to do something about all of the algae in the pond its hard to let the kids fish when they cant pull in anything put green slime.
Natural nature all good
Always a great place to visit. Great for exercise. Great for fishing. Fun place to take kids with lots a playgrounds and a large playground. Large pool open in the summertime and tennis courts for the tennis player in ur family.
Great for family reunions, simple cookout or whatever the occasion. The kids have plenty of activities to keep them entertain.
Had a great 5th birthday for my lil man
Spent many hours there when I was young. Loved it from g atherings to meetings. Great place for young and old.
This place is amazing! I really wish I could have parked my RV there overnight. No hookups needed, but its so quiet and peaceful there.
Beautiful scenery with nice facilities and trails. Skateboard area, tennis, golf, hiking and biking trails. Lots to do.
One of Charlestons perks. Escape the city in just a few minutes to get out in nature. Good, bike, walk,, decompress and unwind.
Grew up going to this park. So many found memories made there. Shaded walking path along the river is relaxing.
Its always clean. Plenty of places to get out and hike, walk your dog or just yourself. Lots of shelters to enjoy a family barbeque. Just a great park that is convenient for you to get to and enjoy the outdoors.
This is by far the best park in Kanawha County. It serves Charleston well being only two miles outside city limits. Hike along the river or the mountain tops. Play golf or fish from the pond. Enjoy some disc golf. Driving range anyone? There is plenty to do at Coonskin Park!
Love hiking the trails or taking the kids out for a day in the sun.
Traveling through the area this sounded like a nice place to get out and stretch our legs and it was. We played the front 9 of the disc golf course. Read the reviews on DG Course Review ahead of time so we knew what to expect.
Plenty of grass, courses, courts, pits, water and woods for all outdoor recreations.
A wonderful place to have a picnic, let the kids play, and enjoy the outdoors!! Something for everyone!! I have great memories from.my childhood here, and I love making new ones with my son.
Nice park, several places for little ones to run around. Pool is great in summer.
Great place for all activities. Walking, hiking, biking, soccer field, swimming pool and more.
Very nice park! Plenty of pavilions for family reunions or other outdoor gatherings.
Good place watch my son play lacrosse for Capitol High school # 24 go Jonathan
Great for evening walks and impromptu picnics. Pet friendly.
Great park! Love hiking there. The pool is old but good. Great playgrounds and picnic areas. Very nice soccer stadium. Golf course seems nice - Ive never played it. There is also a small skateboard park, tennis courts, disk golf course, and driving range. If you havent been in a few years, you should definitely go to see the improvements!
Kids love going to the park there. Wonderful place to have reunions and gatherings of any kind.
Great place to go to do a little of everything. There could be some updates to the park but understand there are limited funds. Plenty of hiking to do and more.
Very nice park!! Wish more of the kids playground equipment had shade protecting it from the sun.... Hot AF slides are only fun to go down so many times. Lol
Gorgeous place!
Very nice place to enjoy a beautiful evening.
The conference center in the lake is great!
Great place for family time
They are fixing the front 9 so you cant play them the back 9 is free but there are no greens. So its a great place to play bad golf
Beautiful place
A place I come to just to wax my cars
Great Christmas light display.
Clean Park with many playgrounds, trails, and other activities for the whole family to enjoy.
Huge park with a little of everything. Golf, fishing, hiking, camping, football, and soccer.
Beautiful park with nice soccer stadium.
Nice place
Its very wet.
Beautiful park with terrrific hiking trails and lakes. Great picnic location for family reunions and friends.
Its a great park to go too.
Very big park with lots of picnic areas and playgrounds. The restroom is very clean. We enjoyed our time with kids
One of my favorite places to go the kids really enjoy the water slide and its a really nice place and they let them play with water guns in the pool and other toys
Nice park, lots of space and open areas. Well maintained.
A beautiful place to spend a little time.
I love taking my children to Cookskin, I wish they would being back the mini golf and paddle boats from when I was little! I have such great memories!
Not crowded.. And quite...
Very clean, always a pleasure here. Amble shelter areas, and you can come and enjoy any shelter without a mandated reservation which is always a good thing. Playground equipment is generally well kept, although it is starting to show its age. Other patrons to the park are usually very friendly and arent snobby about letting kids play with one another.
Very nice place to visit, the hiking trails are very nice and it is a very clean place.
Good picnic location.
