Lovely views, and great for all levels of fitness. The parts of the trail closer (within a couple of miles) to the parking lot are paved and not particularly challenging. A few short stretches with some gradient, but nothing difficult - within the paved stretches. Once on the far side, the trail is clear but not paved, and have inclines with a bit of heft. Be warned: bathrooms are all closed now because of the pandemic. There are lots of benches and a few jetties around the lake, and small beaches. If you want sun, take the east trail in the evenings, the west trail in the mornings.
Park is open for walk-in traffic despite washrooms and food vendors are all shutdown due to COVID19. Always an pleasure to run here.
A few trails and picnic areas are manual-wheelchair friendly :-)Many trails with asphalt. Popular easy trails tend are cleaner. Be careful of dog poo sometimes, but generally, I almost always step on horse poo on the off-road trails. Some areas have shades from the large trees. Trails are on different levels of elevation, which is perfect for all levels of walkers, hikers, and runners.
Nice park and great view. Hiked the 9 mile loop around the lake. There were lots of shade so the hike was not too bad. My dog was exhausted around halfway. Be sure to come early on the weekends. Small parking place was packed and I had to drive to the other side of lake chabot to find parking where there was a chance your car might get hit by people throwing frisbees.
Walk on the left side of the lake in the afternoon. Great walk
Cool place. Free judgment place to walk, run, jog or bike.
It is like Lake Tahoe in bay area. Perfect for biking fun. Also, great with family. Fun.
Enjoyed a nice day at the park today! No parking in the lots which sucks! Parking is what stops me from visiting as often as I’d like
When I need a peace of mind with some good exercise I come here and embrace Nature’s Beauty
What a hidden gem! Or maybe just a hidden gem to me since Im not a bay area native ;). Beautiful lake with a cafe, boat rental, fishing, paved trails, and lots of vantage points and park benches. Ill definitely come back sometime and do the full 9 mile hike around the lake.
The Hike is no joke 9.5 miles of hills...Lovey scenic view..As the sign says bring water....
This is one of the best bass lakes I have been to in the bay area. I have fished it at least 3 days a week for the past 3 years . It is good exercise and great fishing ! I have raised 2 daughters fishing there . It is our familys go to place . If you strike out your first time.....heres a secret.....walk atleast 2miles either way, rubber worm or football jig, or whopper popper !! Guaranteed catch !
I love fishing here. Hardly catch anything. But the views are worth it.
Excellent place to be in east bay. It can be a place for whole family for relaxing as well as for various workouts.
Free parking on Saturday, dog friendly, good for a walk.
Great place to go for a weekend activity. Biking, hiking, good trails, boating and some brilliant spots to have a nice picnic. They have booking options if u are looking to celebrate a bday or baby shower. The marina cafe has some decent food options too.
Peaceful, clean, quiet and pretty. Nice little marina for boat rentals, clean bathrooms, food vendor, paved paths, and lots of picnic areas. Our nonprofit agency was there for our annual bonding picnic, and everybody had a great time. Paid parking is available, but there was plenty of free parking on the main road (at least during the week; cant vouch for weekends). Id recommend the Lake Chabot recreational area for nice walks, exercise, picnics, a little paddle boating, photography, or just sitting on a bench with a view of the lake.
Nice place for a walk with boat rentals available. Dog friendly.
Nice easy trail. Can go for 9 miles, or 1, its up to you. Gets busy on weekends but come on a weekday and it is quite empty.About 3 miles in going counter-clockwise youll encounter a hill and then a fww more thereafter 3 miles later. Not a hard hike, but not quite a leisurely walk either.Costs 2$ for dogs, 5$ for parking as of May 21 2019
Trails nice and clear and some are actually paved. They have canoeing and kayaking, lots of activities to keep you busy. Parking is cheap, only $5
A fun spot to picnic and take the kids!It was a cooler day with overcast, so it wasn’t overly busy. Quite a large picnic area with lots of tables and different sections to choose from. Some paid parking off the road, or free street parking and a short walk in.Dogs ok, on lease, but you pay a fee for them ($2). We did see a Friday free sign on the way out.I think $5 to park in the lot.Cafe was cute with a rental desk for the boats to the side. Was made aware of the toxic algae in the lake, so I just made the kiddos aware, they listened well, obeyed my rules and all seemed fine. I would have appreciated hand sanitizer access throughout the park, as I left mine in the car.Lots of birds! Canadian Geese frequent the lawn space, so watch your step!We rented a paddle boat, $38 for 2 hrs. and packed light snacks and water/juice.We really enjoyed ourselves!Saw plenty of walkers/joggers/bikers on the paths surrounding the lake.A few camp sights too!All n’ all a great day, and a great outdoor space!
Wonderful place to hike/bike and go kayaking
Visited last weekend with my dogs and was surprised to find out the lake is still testing positive for blue-green algae. So had a bit of a scare around that but it was really my fault for not believing the many signs that warned of it. Blue-green algae in January? Yes. Believe it people. My dogs are fine, and I am wiser.
We love coming here for casual family hikes. The place is great for a daily walk with a completely paved path to the dam and back for a little over 3 miles with couple decent hills or for better hike you can loop the lake for 9 miles. Its a nice spot to bring the family to bbq on their numerous grills and tables. Well maintained restrooms and there is a boat dock for rentals and food. There is a ton of free street parking on lake chabot or $5 for parking by the lake.
Really pretty, enjoyed the canopy of trees on this super hot day.
Great place . Stroller friendly trail . Provides good work out
Serene with beautiful views and great paths to run or hike.
One of the best parks in the east bay! There are plenty of options for boat rentals of many different types to get out on the water. Wednesdays I believe is at a discounted price. Great place to go for a walk and hike. Plenty of places to picnic. As an avid parks goer this park is well set up with a little bit of everything with camping close by.
I love and enjoy spending time at Lake Chabot, very beautiful place: )
Beautiful views and good walking areas.
Beautiful park. The 9 miles loop was very beautiful.
Beautiful lake will lots of boating options. Pretty crowded in general but VERY crowded this weekend!
I went here with my company for a work picnic and we had a wonderful time! It’s a very nice park, plenty of shady areas. And at the time, it was free parking on Fridays!Great place - worth the visit.
I went to lake chabot many many times, most of them were really just a short one hour walk, so basically Ill walk 1/4 of the way around the lake and walk back to the entrance where I started. I went for a whole route around the lake so to speak today and it was fantastic, especially during this shelter in place order. It took me and my family around four hours, but it can be much quicker as my gf needed constant stop towards the end. I feel.like this route makes a lot of sense if you want to walk a lot and see a bit of everything; you have the first 1/3 of the trip along side the lake, then the next 1/3 a bit further from the lake and a little up near the bushes and elevated, then the last part was a mix between around the lake and more in land, basically the scenery was changing constantly and I felt like you get to enjoy more. All in, if you take this route and walk around the lake, its around 9-10 miles, and its easy to walk and not much change in elevation. My family is just average, fitness wise, and Im slightly more fit than them, its tired at the end of the trip and some of my family members shouldnt be taking this trip (because they normally dont walk much), but I would say if you come prepared with a bottle of water and some snacks, youre all set. Give yourself 4 hours and rest when necessary. Last but not least, try to avoid Sunday as its very crowded even during the pandemic. Have fun!
Never tire of taking a lovely walk along the lake either up to the dam or to the bridge (both about 3.5 miles up and back). Peaceful with lovely views that change with the weather, seasons and time of day.
Ive always loved lake chabot. Everytime I walk here I go home feeling better.
Great little cafe too! Lots of healthy options and there’s no deep fryer in sight. It was well staffed and very clean.Secret Tip: Take a closer look at the napkin holders and you can get a glimpse of some of the giant catches of the past.
Gods creation such a beautiful sight! The 10 mile trail was definitely a challenge worth every struggle
It is really nice regional Park around Lake Chabot. It has lot of BBQ grills, good hiking/biking/running trails - short/long, renting boats/kayak, small Cafe - activities suitable for all ages. Its usually crowded and best to plan accordingly. It has the parking lot with parking fee of $5. There is one 7-8 miles of walking/biking trail around the lake, but the loop is currently closed due the construction work.
I’ve been to this place a couple of times, and it’s always great to go back. It’s a very nice area where you can relax and take a break from the noise of the city and change some fresh local air. There are up and down hills and even outdoors gym where you can exercise. Feeling the vibe of that place just feels so damn good .. forgot to mention that you can rent a boat and kayak around the lake parking is free because I usually go after 6 pm. It’s a perfect place to walk your dog. However, restrooms are not that clean or good to use there. I definitely recommend visiting the area.
Best place to fish in the back by the dam.
Great place for summer fun. Hiking, mountain bike ride,Rick climbing, canoeing, fishing and boating
Clean, well maintained paved trail. Will definitely be coming back!
Another great park within the EBRPD system. This park has something for everyone. i.e. hiking. fiishing, boating, etc.
No public bathroom its pretty rude to use the bathroom in front of the public then say we cant use it I think someones just lazy and doesnt want to clean in my opinion
Kayaking is very relaxing. The only thing is that they send the last one at 2:30 and close at 5, but besides that its good.
Just stunning regional park all the way around. Please let’s all work together to keep this place clean and safe.
They just need a better system for renting kayaks and boats upgrade guys so 90s
Wonderful park, amazing settings, good location, spectacular sceneries, there is a beautiful lake Chabot. I cannot visit this place without taking my fishing rod and renting a patio boat for 2 hrs. Take a good camera with you, you will need it here. A perfect place to hike, walk, fish, barbecue and have fun. I can’t say enough good words about this park absolutely one of the most beautiful parks in California east bay.
Beautiful lake, the picnic tables are taped off but still a good spot for a afternoon gathering
The trail is so well maintained. Lots of port-o-lets, smooth asphalt pathways, and beautiful scenery.
Nice hiking trail, lots of tree shaded trail area to keep out of the sun.
I really enjoy walking this trail
A nice park with bunch of barbecue spots( available for use on first come basis). It also has a small play structure for kids and shade of trees to relax on a sunny day. There are options to boat and fish. Last rental for boat is at 5.00 pm.Boat tour options are also available and last tour starts at 4.00 pmParking is available and costs 5.00 USD
Beautiful trails to walk on, and the view is spectacular. Great way to do some exercise and kill a couple hours
Plenty of space to walk o hike most of the visitor wears a mask.
Really nice trails, perfectfor bikeing bikeing or horseback riding.
I enjoyed this hike. It starts off with about two miles of pavement, then goes to about the off-road, and then ends up with the two miles of pavement.Depending on the time of day, and the time of week it can get busy here, but the trails are well maintained, and the views are beautiful.
Bathrooms need to be open so we dont see people peeing in the bushes!
I came here to run a race, and found the trail to be beautiful! There is a paved portion that goes for about two miles, so that part is stroller friendly. Past that, the trail that I was on was a pretty steep climb. Great scenery though!
ABORT. So crowded. No room for social distancing. People everywhere. It feels like being at a county fair. Not a peaceful park
Fun park with a boat launch for kayaks and a trail that wraps around the entire reservoir. mountain bike trails and fishing.
It was nice day for a walk. Everyone was there.
Only complaint is the bathrooms. The main ones are closed due to Covid of course, but the outhouses need to be cleaned more often.
Take a long trail. Not busy and views are incredible. Additionally, suggesting to be on trail at the second part of the day, just before closing. All animals are out and you will see them in their butt others couldnt see. My kids loved it. It was magical.
This place is an absolutely fantastic way to spend some time over the weekend especially when the weather is good.
Great for picnics, walking dogs, hiking with friends or solo. The park is usually busy in a really good way. Parking can be tricky if parking outside park for free but youll find something. Lots of coming and going.
This lake is a nice place to go fishing or for a scenic walk/bike ride. We went there to go fishing. No luck, but had a good time. There is a small cafe if you get hungry. They also rent boats and have some fishing gear. The bathrooms were surprisingly clean for such a busy place.
Got some really awesome views recorded on my drone its pretty serene and some good shots and meditation
Lake Chabot in Castro Valley is the perfect place to recharge. Beautiful lake and trails invite you to explore all the park has to offer. Enjoy with family and friends next time youre in the East Bay. Lots of shade and BBQs to cook, too.
Awesome largemouth fishing, caught and release only...
Parking aicks on weekends but great places to be very peaceful and the have boats you can rent. Ayyyy @ibadatea
It is great park, a lot of picnic areas. It has a long paved trail which is easy for walk and stroller friendly. It is beautiful sunshine and the great view of the lake for a half day hiking is perfect. A lot of people do some fishing, boating on the lake.
Relaxing, hiking, fishing, food, dog friendly. Met with smiles all day.
Great place to hike! There is 2 entrances. You can find them both on a map. If going hiking after raining bring shoes you dont mind getting extremely muddy. We pushed our babies in a stroller up the hills and through the mud. We seen cows but they were behind a fence and friendly. The place never closes so you can watch the sunset.
Beautiful trails the people on weekends or busy times who have headphones/buds in ears create huge safety issues for themselves and others . GO DURING WEEKDAY to get your 5 star trails
It was beautiful . The fresh air smelt so good ! It’s a great place to walk, bike, play sports, or even eat lunch !
A great Oasis right in the bustling bay area.
Nice park. Plenty of parking ($8 per car). Trails and view were nice, we did part of bass cove trail. If you have tume you can rent a boat or enjoy fishing along the lake.
A quiet, magical park for athletic bicycle folks... the 16 mile circle path around the reservoir is strenuous but beautiful - paved and gravel... better for mountain bike ...
There are endless things to do at Lake Chabot! You can stay near the main entrance and have a nice picnic, utilize the playground, rent a boat, or even grab a meal at the cafe. If youre overwhelmed by the amount of people this awesomeness attracts, you can head down one of the many hiking/ biking trails. There are numerous possibilities for exploring the lake. There is a 12 biking loop and a 9 mile hiking loop (the majority of both is the same trail). There are tons of other side adventures to take away from the masses. The beginning of the trail on both the west and east sides are paved and relatively flat. However, if you venture further than a 1/2 mile or so the trail begins to change in elevation, making it more difficult for some to traverse. Approximately 2 miles into the main trail, the pavement ends into a wide but uneven-surfaced trail. Its well worth the peace and views to take the entire loop. This park holds endless adventures for all.
It is a beautiful park. The whole hike is 9 miles long and the whole way is scenic. There are kayaking available. Lots of picninc spots. Some are reserved and some are first come first come basis. You can rent boat for lake tour. Different prize for different size boats. Friendly environment. Perfect for family picnic.
Very clean and walking paths were well maintained.
A great place I also take this picture follow this guy
Wonderful place to hike or just hang out around the lake.
Employees from the cafe & marina are very accommodating and nice! we like coming here its nice though swimming is not allowed.
Good place for a moderate hike. Loop is about 9+ miles
A great park to hike. Rental boats and fishing available.
Nice place to hike, bike, picnic, relax.
Great family place. Weekend Ranger is not very friendly though. Drives WAY TOO fast through the campground. But dont let him ruin your stay.
