Bluebonnet Swamp is truly a fantastic urban oasis of nature exposure! A vast amount of wildlife can be observed both indoors in a controlled environment and outdoors on the lengthy boardwalks and pathways through the 100+ acre park. Currently during Phase 2 of the pandemic, trail walking is 100% free, but the indoor portion is still open for the usual small fee. Admission is generally $3 but cheaper for other categories such as child or student.
Toddler story time is always fun. The walk is not too long so even smaller kids can go through it without asking to be carried. The instructor ms. Sarah is so good with kids and so knowledgeable.
Its a small park with an educational center. The trails are short, but quiet and shaded. Its amazing thats its located in a well developed area of Baton Rouge.
Participated in a family friendly night walk. It was a great time for everyone!
Very nice trail and nature center. Not too long, but plenty to see. The reptile & amphibian exhibit inside was very good and the animals all looked very healthy and alert. The staff is obviously taking good care of the animals. Definitely recommend visiting, but like someone else mentioned, they have wonky hours and I too felt rushed when I visited just before noon on a Thursday (they closed at noon).
Family friendly, both the trail and the nature center are well kept and fun to visit. Lots of wildlife sightings. My only complaint is that the trail is very short. My two toddlers can run it with no issues.
Beautiful place. The trails are no more free now. Need to pay admission fee to get into the trails.
Has an easy to understand map near the entrance to the trail. Currently the inside facility requires signing a waiver and questionnaire due to Covid 19. You must wear a mask and take a temperature check before going inside. We skipped that part and went straight to the trail which has a nice, easy layout. The hours are currently limited to a 12PM shut down time and a 1130am cutoff from entering. Also we were not charged admission just to take the nature trail. Admission does apply if you want to go inside the exhibit.
This place is a great natural preserve featuring unspoiled delta swampland. Say hello to Ashley when you check in, she is friendly, helpful, informative, and very pretty ! Enjoy a nice quiet walk down the well maintained paths, watch the squirrels and bunnies frolic in the woods, and watch those huge white birds glide silently thru the air. If you are quiet and patient, you might see a hummingbird drinking from one of the many feeders placed around the trails. Step lightly on the bridges and boardwalks, and you will see frogs, turtles, minnows, and sometimes a water snake. Try this place out, you wont be sorry ! Dont forget to make a generous donation when you visit, the preserve depends upon your support, Louisiana ! Help them out.
Great place for the whole family particularly during Covid times .Very friendly staff, easy hiking trails and wonderful wildlife exhibit. The swamp in the city.
Peaceful. Beautiful. Helpful, nice employees in the education center.
This was a cool place. The trails are short enough for young children or older children at heart. Not much shaded parking and the check in building feels sparse but holds quite a few live reptiles which was fun and captured your attention in a climate controlled environment. The mosquitos are real here (even during the midday times) so be sure to pack spray and consider wearing long sleeves and pants if you have trouble with bites. Toss your favorite water container and a few bucks ($3 for adults $2 for kids with senior and student pricing available) in a bag and you have a few solid hours of fun and education. Be sure to keep an eye on the little ones as we have been twice and seen snakes each time along with frogs, fish, turtles, cool plants, and even heard owls. There is a safe place in the building for kids to play with some toys and such and meeting rooms likely for demonstrations and educational stuff.
Great nearby spot to get away from the city vibe. Bring binoculars and a lunch find a bench along the trail and just wait for the scene to unfold. Kinda wierd to see buildings along the library trail but still a great little spot in the woods.
Fun and inexpensive to bring a little nature into your day. Unfortunately though it appears the swamp is drying up. There were lots of snakes, turtles, birds and baby aligators inside the nature center! Please visit this place as maybe some extra money to prolong the life of this hidden baton rouge gem!!
This place is awesome and so pretty. You could hear owls all while walking through the stunning swamp. It was very easy to find and isn’t expensive to visit. However, I’m giving it 3 stars because we wanted to buy something in the nature center and they had already “closed down the system” even though they were still open for 25 more minutes. So my family, and the 3 other families in there who ALSO wanted to buy something could not do so all because the two girls working the counter wanted to leave right as the center closed. Super annoying. Definitely go visit here, but make sure it’s an hour before they close if you want to buy something.
A nice little nature walk with an educational experience. They have animals in the building (Snakes, Frogs, other reptiles). Would highly recommend if you or your family are in need of a good walk outside.
We had a lil trouble following the signs. The walk was lovely and peaceful. Weappreciated the animals and friendly staff. I got to see Barbara the owl!
Omg I love thia place ive been about 6 time great for family time peaceful really all around enjoyable
I was very disappointed with the service Jessica Guthrie, Manager promised during the walk through of the rental facility prior to my daughter-in-law baby shower. When I arrived on site at the facility, their staff member was very unprofessional and rude after I had brought my concerns regarding the uncleanliness of the facility. The floor of the entrance was dirty, the carpet needed vacuum. The tables and chairs was not setup as promised during the walk through. The kitchen had roach eggs and spiders on the counter tops. There were nasty dishes left in the sink with dirty wash sponge. The refrigerator was not clean or cleared out. The bathrooms was not clean. This is suppose to be a place where kids have day camp. If your child go to this place, I would think twice about taking them there. Then the female staff person had the nerve to check me off to see if I cleaned the area before leaving. My crew had to take 30 minutes to clean before setup. In the contract, I was only given one hour setup time. Therefore, we only had 30 minutes to setup, not fair. What’s the purpose of having a hour setup time, if the rental guest have to come in to clean and setup their space. It doesn’t make since to give the guest one hour setup time when you have not kept your end of the agreement. Also, you need to get rid of that staff member girl that was overseeing 12/29/19, Sunday. She was unprofessional and does not need to be in that position. She gives your company a poor representation. For this reason, I will never rent this facility again.By the way, let me give you qualities a representative staff member should have: someone that is warm welcoming and inviting with a smile, willing to make sure the guest is satisfied with their space, and helpful in resulting issues that my arrive in a professional manner.
Nature everywhere is beautiful, especially when you visit this facility and its serene environment!
Very friendly staff. Great trails!
It was something that I wanted to experience as an adult.
Great place to spend an afternoon away from the hustle bustle of everyday life!
Great for toddlers, nice shot to see an example of Lousianna ecosystems. In summer not much water so is a seasonal swamp in my opinion.
Very cool place! They have tons of snakes and animals inside that you can look at. Staff is very friendly. The walking trails were very cool, not too long if you have Littles. We saw an owl and snake on the trail, so Id recommend wearing boots! We had a blast!
Great place to escape from the modern world for a little while!
Nice park!! Very well laid out walking trails, that are clearly well maintained. The nature center is very cool and have lots of neat animals. A great walk in the woods for anyone looking to enjoy the nice weather.
Love this place. And the staff is so awesome
Worth a visit if you live in the area. Not the beat scenery. Go to Tickfaw State Park for good trails in a swamp setting.
Great trails, shaded, free, clean, safe and beautiful pavilion with animals and habitats.
Its a lot of fun for your Family time .We Love coming fishing here.People are very, nice here too.Ttoo.Thanks BREC .
Its a swamp. If you need to see a swamp this is the most accessable one to get to. They have a bunch of snakes and turtles in aquarium tanks to look at and a mile or more of trails to walk. Its a very easy walk. There are less bugs in the winter, but also less animals moving around.
This place is always hosting something great for the kids. The nature trails and facilities are well maintained every time Ive been there. They host a haunted hike every year and all the kids love it. A definite on returning to this facility.
Its a great little hiking trail through a swamp, with wooden walkways for the wet bits. Surprisingly scenic for being in the middle of the city
Beautiful place, very inexpensive! A great wild get away in the middle of the city! They have 1.5 miles of easy hiking trails, including a boardwalk over the swamp. There is a wonderful menagerie of live snakes, turtles, and gators in display tanks, complete with info cards about each species! They keep bees in the warmer months, you can see a portion of the inside of their hive through a glass wall, and buy honey in the gift shop.I adore this place, and recommend it for almost everyone. School age children will have a blast, keep them entertained all afternoon/morning for under $5!
Fair price to keep the doors open, my son and I enjoyed our visit. The staff were friendly and the walk was nice.
A wonderful gem in a now over developed part of town. Im so glad someone had the foresight to preserve this portion of the swamp. They even have a nice little pond in the parking lot full of turtles, crawfish and some fish.
Pretty cool place. There are two different trails that take about ten minutes each to complete. 0-2 years free, kids are $2 each, and adults are $3 The inside has a bunch of caged animals to look at with a kid play area that is full of nature stuff.
Very personable staff and beautiful trails! The staff always know what theyre talking about and all love what they do. The trails are kept up and redone if they become hard to follow. Wildlife and scenery is to die for. Have went quite a few times and will undoubtedly visit multiple times in the future.
The walk is pleasant and not arduous. As our visit was in mid August, we hardly saw any of the advertised wildlife, which rely on flooded areas for their habitat. There is a small hall, also housing the administration and ticket desk with some wildlife to see, including quite a few snakes. I think Springtime would be the best time to visit, when the swamp areas are filled with wildlife, but dont expect gators.
Nice nature center with turtles, snakes, and alligators in tanks. Really nice walking trails and boardwalks.
The trails are fun to explore and the inside exhibits are cool.
$3 + tax entrance fee for adults. 3 trails which we actually saw animals on, very clean, child friendly nature exhibit with tons of snakes and turtles, overall a great experience
This would be a great place to bring your kids while schools are closed. Call first!
Super fun place. The kids love it every time we go.
The Bluebonnet Swamp Nature Center has been open for several years and it is a must see attraction when you visit Baton Rouge. Visitors are encouraged to adventure out on the wide boardwalk that meanders through the swamp, past plenty of fallen trees and wildlife. The visitors center has several wildlife exhibits that are always popular with children. Relaxing walk with plenty of nature. Great place in the city to watch birds. Easy walking paths but you feel like you are in the middle of a forest.
This is such a cool place tucked away in the middle of a town. We got to see snakes and frogs and turtles. Such a nice boardwalk to walk on and at the nature center is great! All the staff was friendly, just try to go when there are not classes from local schools touring at the same time.
Great atmosphere, friendly and helpful staff.
OMG!!! It was wonderful! No Louisiana state bird- the mosquito! And it was breezy!!
Grat for kids. Nature and stuff.
Very nice hiking trail. Did not realize there was a fee until we arrived. Luckily we had $ with us, ($3per adult). Not that you can get lost, but trail signage is not very clear in explaining directions. Only mattered because we had a set distance in mind to hike. Will go again, but hope to see if there is a pass to purchase vs fee each time I go.
Nice little nature walk. Cute visitor center with wildlife.
Kids had fun
Wonderful place to walk through and enjoy the swamp. They even stay open late and allow flash light walks. Every once and a while (monthly I believe) they host an event for dogs to walk. Small but satisfying viewing area showing the different species on the swamp
Guide was friendly and knows his stuff. Family operated. Passion for nature, was not intrusive to animals and did not feed them to draw them. Also talks about the wider environmental concepts around the lake. He even picked up thrash from other visitors.
We took our friend who was visiting from Maine to the Nature Center on Wed. The person who sold us our tickets told us what birds to be watching for and on what trail they may be found. Every trail was nice and well cared for. We met a volunteer on a trail and he pointed out birds for us to watch for. Yes, the trails are short but you have a whole world of Louisiana plants, trees and migrating and permanent birds to spot. Our friend loved it!
Nice easy walk. Lots of birds and native plants. Plenty of trails, an outer and inner loop. Probably can walk entire trails in an hour or so. Nice center with snakes and turtles on display. Has a small gift shop of toys, tees and mugs - with reasonable prices. Kids love the gift shop. Good parking lot. The pond at the parking area is loaded with turtles.

We went here today in a great mood only to be met by moody employees. We go in at 4, pay, and are told that we can do the trail if we are back at our cars by 5 because that’s when they close the gate. We are totally cool with that. However, I go to the restroom get a drink from the machine and am looking around inside the nature center and am told in a condescending tone (like I’m a child) we need to go and do the trail NOW. I’m confused because why does it matter when I start one of the trails (there are three trails all combined maybe a little over a mile) as long as I’m back to my car by 5? If I want to look in the nature center walk one of the short trails and go to my car after that’s my business. Nope. They tell my husband again we need to go on the trail NOW. So we eye roll the situation (don’t say anything), go, and come back to the nature center at 452 to finish looking at what we didn’t get to look at the first time (turtles snakes etc). At 457 the manager tells us in an aggravated way we need to leave now as they have to lock the gate. The building signs are posted nature center is open until 5 pm. I say okay, and am just going to leave it alone and ask for the managers name to make a follow up complaint. The young girl there says she doesn’t feel comfortable giving me her bosses name then proceeds to tell me how we ignored them when they told us to start the trail and be at our car by 5. I respond that the sign says the building is open until 5. Also, the parking lot has a gate that locks on one side and an open exit which anyone can access at any hour of the day on the other side. The hours of the building do not match what they say and apparently you can’t look around the nature center after 4 if you want to walk any piece of the trail because they will badger you until you leave the building.
Beautiful nature walk. Saw some wild life.Staff could have been friendlier. We didnt let it ruin our visit.
Interesting place.
Quiet. Green. Shady. You can hear yourself think. The traffic noise fades away. Take a quick hike or linger and watch bugs, birds, lizards, snakes and butterflies.
Great place to visit. I just wish they would clean the glass on the aquariums better so that we could have seen the animals clearer.
There was a time when locals could venture onto these outdoor trails for free. The last time we went to only walk outside on the trails, the girl at the desk chased us down and told us we had to pay. Not sure when this changed but arent my taxes paying for parks throughout the area? Why the double charge? So annoying.
My kids love the animals inside the center the best.
Lovely place for a walk. Mind your step, though.
Fantastic place for everyone. Topnotch small but great nature center. Highly recommend as a place to take a break when traveling along I-10
Ok place to take a walk thru but that is about it. Nature Center does have a few snakes, turtles and gift show. Not much else there.
Beautiful scenery
Not huge but we saw juvenile armidillos, owl, and center had snakes, and turtles and we got to pet baby gator. Nice walk and great nature sounds.
If you are into nature, this place is for you. Louisiana has some beautiful scenery and this place captures this in an amazing way. I went here when my family came down for a visit and we all had a blast. The trails are well maintained and the plant and animal life in this area are very exotic and intreaguing-- especially if you are new to Louisiana. I was in Louisiana for 3 years for a job, so the geography was new to me and this center blew me away the first time I visited.
Needed a break from driving so we stopped here. Didnt realize we had to pay. No signs. Thought it was just a park with a boardwalk. Employees had to chase us down and ask us to pay, that was embarrassing. I thought it must be pretty good if they charge admission. Nope. Maybe 100 yards is actually through the swamp? Quite disappointed. It took longer to pay than it did to walk through it.
Cant wait to see this in spring, no bugs now
Amazing small wilderness spot in the middle of urban sprawl. Saw rabbits, raccoon and squarrels
Went to Brec’s Haunted Hikes and had a blast. Wish the rain didn’t occur
Nice little nature trail through the swamp. Being from the north its nice to be able easily take a little walk through a swamp without needing to pack hiking stuff. The trail is mostly wood walkways and gravel so its easy going.
Excellent swap tour! It was well worth the trip. Very knowledgeable staff.
Cute little nature center. Great for kids. The trails are very short (0.5 to 1 mile), staff is helpful and kind. They were hosting an art show when I went by and it showcased childrens art as well. Big collection of snakes inside to look at too!
A total waste of time and money. I had the opportunity to visit with a special needs group and our experience was horrible...from the treatment by the staff to the actual facilities. The staff was unpleasant; they seemed as if they were being bothered. The best part of the trip was it ending.
It is awesome and great stuff at gift shop
Three dollar entry fee. Visitors building has exhibits for different reptiles most of which are common to the area. Nature trails have good sights.
Was good
Fun walk only did the half mile. Few wild life near the trail.
Awesome! Friendly staff and actually saw some critters in the wild!
A wonderful place in the middle of the city to get in touch with nature.
Very cool walking trails and awesome indoor reptile exhibit!!
Great educational fun learning of the local eco system without leaving the city.
Well maintained and tranquil
Nearest fun place for kids to go on trail
Close times are kind of early but the center is great and the trails are short but still fun.
Great quiet walk. $3 entrance fee with exhibits and animals in the nature center
Got to see 10 different water snakes in the wild in one day. They have really done great with it and have an exceptional staff. My family really loves it. Great place especially since it is in Baton Rouges backyard.
Great place where you would least expect it. Bring the kids.
Staff deliberately ignored us to talk to their friends and let people cut us in line. Perfect example of Southern Hospitality. I didnt want to spend ANY money here because of how disrespectful and rude the employees are here. Will never come again.
Its a nice nature walk in the middle of town, but only saw one frog and a few birds walking the trails for an hour.
Really nice place to walk around to enjoy nature. They have programs that are educational and great for kids too. A great place to spend a lovely afternoon.
