I came here to watch the Vagina Monologues for a class. The performance was entertaining and the atmosphere kinda has a cozy, indie vibe to it. They host different performances so you’ll have to inquire to see what’s playing.
Very intimate, hole in the wall theatre. There is not clear signage indicating its location. Follow Google maps and it will get you there. They have a bar at entry and I saw a great feminist comic show there.
I took the Improv 101 class here. Great experience! Jo is fantastic. Her level of support and feedback were great. I love that she took notes and gave everyone specific and relevant feedback. Also, her ability to create a comfortable and fun environment is terrific. She changed and impacted many lives. I am impressed and grateful.
I came to the Institution Theater for their free improv class with a friend and we had a blast! The instructor made everyone feel comfortable and welcome, no matter their skill level. The class was just held in a big open room with chairs around the perimeter. We played a lot of games, got creative, and laughed a lot! I will definitely be going back to their next free session. If I could afford it, Id take a full course with them!
Love it!So much fun, in fact its THE Funniest personal growth you can take!!!Excellent for communication skills improvement.Effective for public speaking and stage presence. And great in team building. As a Love and Relationships coach, I recommend this to my clients, it helps makes dating more fun. You can also learn real life connection elements, such as Yes... andHighly recomended
Amazing! Amazing! Amazing! I took the commercial audition workshop & some improv classes. Great place to make friends and have fun. Try the free workshops!!
I did the intro to standup course with Brently and it was great. Lots of good advice and you get some experience on stage in a very non-intimidating climate. Even if you arent sure you ever want to do a standup set, I would recommend the class.
Great people alot of interesting people and a diffrent weird for Austin
I loved it️. I truly enjoyed myself !!!!️
What an amazing experience. Its a small local theatre with such a passionate and Talanted young guys running the show and really enjoying what are they doing. I recommend to all real art lovers to come and enjoy their shows and support this talanted people. Thank you for a great show .
Uh-oh, I may have a new addiction... Improv. My shy butt felt so supported and appreciated here! ️
So humbling to learn just a dose of the art of Improv. The lesson of human connection and being present is sooo overlooked in our culture that it should be considered a mandatory class for middle school students for example.
Oh wow, the best flavor of improv in town.
Just saw anything live! It was so funny my sides hurt from laughing. This place is awesome and the people are a huge reason why I love Austin so much! Thanks for a great evening and I will be back!
Ma and Pa Gothic are a delight!
Parking lot was a little crazy, but the shows were amazing.
When I say that this place and the people who inhabit it changed my life, Im not exaggerating. I had the time of my life taking the improv classes that they offer. If you are thinking of taking any classes, take them here! All of the improv theaters in Austin are amazing but Jo in 101 was an angel sent from Canada and made class fun, deep, hilarious, and meaningful. I will never forget the lessons Ive learned and I will always reccomend that people come here to dip their toes into the amazing world of improv.Try the free improv workshop if youre unsure but trust me, the leap is a leap forward. You will forever improv[e] your life.(that joke was not a mistake, it was a happy accident) ;)
I went to a free improve class here. It was my first ever. It was pretty fun and the instructions were simple enough. Give it a try. Everyone here was welcoming.
Discovered this little place, awed by the quality of work. Very enjoyable. Simple yet cozy seating.
Ive been to free improv classes, Anything Live on Thursdays and took the Improv 101 class. Ive enjoyed it all so much I signed up for Improv 201. This is an awesome, not at all pretentious, warm, genuine theater. The instructors have tons of experience. Everyone is supportive. I highly recommend it for either a one-time fun event or a first step into comedy and theater. Youll be surprised how capable you are!
I just graduated from The Institution Theaters improv program. I felt supported and encouraged throughout the course. The instructors provide constructive feedback at every step of the way to help you become a better improviser and overcome your fears. I am grateful for all the wonderful people I met through the theater. This was a life changing experience and highly recommend it to anyone who wants to step out of their comfort zone.
Improv 101 was a wonderful and inspiring class. Jo was a fantastic and supportive teacher (not to mention Canadian-level funny). She made the class a welcoming and joyful environment every week. Seb was also hilarious and supportive as her TA. I would happily take a class with these two again, but I can’t wait for 201!
Fantastic. Take some classes, see some weird stuff, improve your life
Friendly staff, good prices, clean bathrooms.
Fun. The shows I went to were funny and nice.
Have taken some improv classes and met some great people. Highly recommend. Also seen some hilarious shows.
Great shows at this venue!
I just finished a 101 improvisación class. I love the positive energy and knowledge of the instructor, Jo. She is an inspiring person!! One of the things that was very useful for me to learn is that when you are specific in what you say, you add power to your performance! Thank you Jo, for a challenging and terrific class!!!
If you even have an inkling of a desire to see a show or take a class, DO IT! And do it here, at The Institution. It is one of the most tight knit and loving families in Austin and all are welcome! Tom, Asaf, and the rest of the teachers and staff are the best and they pull no punches with their shows.
I took the stand up comedy class and it has seriously been one of the best experiences I’ve ever had.
Had a blast in this cute and intimate venue !
When you go to the Institution, chances are that people want to take care of you. I first went to this theater August 2014 and have gone back almost every week since. This place is a home and Tom and Asaf will treat you like family. One of my favorite places in the world.
Ive taken an improv class before, but I had never had Jo Marachino as an instructor. SHE IS AWESOME!!! She lead the class, (Improv101) flawlessly all the while making sure everyone felt safe and supported. She knows how to bring out a better version of yourself, which surprised me every week. I just signed up for the next level of classes and Im excited to continue!
I completed Improv 101 at The Institution, and it was SO MUCH FUN! I learned more than I thought I would, and cant recommend their classes enough. It was a very supportive, comfortable environment to play and learn. I broke out of my shell a little, and surprised myself each week. Looking forward to 201!
This place is amazing. Great classes, shows, people. Just go.
A little hidden theater in South Austin. Its perfect.
Laughing so hard at the Virgin Territory tonight. Great hidden gem in Austin for live comics
Went to my first comedy show ever here while visiting Austin. It was so awesome!! I was cracking up the whole time and even got pulled up on stage for one of the acts. Would definitely recommend.
Little tiny awesome find in Austin! Love it!
Oh. My. Goodness! What a blast! I took improv 101, taught by the fabulous Jo Chauvin (and her TA, Carrie Stephens) and had a wonderful time! I felt like a kid again and cant believe how much I learned! Already, that one class has helped me with my public speaking, and listening in general. Theres so much that applies to every day life! Im looking forward to taking another improv class.I have to mention too, the support I felt from Jo, Carrie, and all of my class mates was tremendous! We truly did have each others backs and wanted everyone in the class to succeed - and have fun! What a great group of people. :)
Lots of funny shows- check the website! The theatre is up to standards of other improve stages in town. Hideout Theatre, The New Movement, Coldtowne are also great places to check out.
I love going to shows here and I take improv classes here. Best teachers ever.
Took a stand-up class (more workshop) with Valerie Nies. Excellent way to venture into an intimidating world.
Amazing improv school! The teachers are all excellent and push you to be a better performer. Cant recommend highly enough for anyone that is looking to start or continue their improv training.
Such a great place! A hidden treasure for sure :)
Super awesome atmosphere. I recommend going for a free improv workshop and then signing up as Tom and Asaf will hook you into improv. Absolutely stellar work here!
Awesome venue. Very welcoming environment to start improv.
Went for the Sunday night show, ImprompDuo. It was a huge amount of fun and I would suggest it to anyone who is interested in improv theatre.
