I came here on a Saturday. The course is alright for beginners, nothing crazy. However, there were goose feces EVERYWHERE. I understand it’s bound to happen on a golf course, but I’ve never seen so much. Even the greens were covered. With it being a course in Asheville, I had hoped for beautiful mountain views. Unfortunately, I was disappointed. It’s right next to main road and there was not much of a view at all.
Well, not much to say. It is a golf course. With that said, the reception area is in need of a face lift. Starting with the man behind the counter. He was as dry as the Sahara Dessert. Then, you gi to the cart staging area and its in a mud hole. Ok, then you start your round of golf. We should have had scuba gear on. But it is not a course I would recommend. But if you do find yourself at Asheville Municipal golf course, make sure to talk with the starter out back. He was the only thing I respected at this golf course. Hit hell out of it................I have 1 more thing to mention. Donald Ross would roll over in his grave if he saw this place. Asheville, NC, should have no problem keeping up that golf course. Hire some grounds keepers, because it is in need of some full time love, sorry Donald......
This is an interesting layout that unfortunately suffers from under-funding, or poor management, or both. It’s too bad to see the city neglect a historic Donald Ross design. Tee boxes and fairways, especially on the back nine are in dire need of maintenance. Pace of play is also a major issue; tee times are generally not adhered to at all and the starter doubles as the Ranger, which is completely ineffective. All in all, it’s an affordable place to practice but definitely not a course you want to play with out of town guests— there are a dozen better courses in a 30 minute radius.
Asheville municipal is a good course for the average golfer. I would give it 5 star but tee boxes on back 9 are in bad shape. The staff are always so nice.
I travelled from GA to Asheville to play a course up here cause I’ve heard the area is beautiful. I get there about 1045 and am ready shortly after. Apparently there was a tournament on this particular Sunday teeing at 11. I was completely by myself, and anyone that golfs knows a solo zooms anyways. They refused to let me tee off at 1055 and were gonna make me wait up to a hour to tee and then have to play behind multiple tournament foursomes. Very poorly managed and I didn’t even get to play it....
The front 9 was good, but if I would have known the back 9 was as bad as it was I would not have paid to play the back 9. The tee boxes are Horrible and the Greens are not much better.
Great course in excellent shape..a repeat issue every play is the slow play. They need a Ranger to stay busy to push slow play
New golfer, enjoyed the links style.play. Back 9 next time
Honestly it’s probably the worst course I’ve ever played on. I would rather not golf at all if the choice was golf here for the rest of my life or never golf again. Truly awful experience. The course is very poorly kept and the layout is trash. It’s cheap but you certainly don’t get what you pay for with black mountain golf course being right down the road, same price, and a million times better. Just don’t go here
Front 9 easy not to much trouble back 9 has tighter fairways. To expensive for a municipal course, some tee boxes are tore up.
Reasonable for for Municipal Court delivering a very different
Good price for a public course. The front nine are kept better thank the back nine. Fun course with some challenging holes.
Course is fair shape, and thats where the good ends. The pace of play is miserable, actually embarrassing. Literally hit shot and wait ten minutes, hit a shot and wait. Beyond embarrassing, my 3 year old could book better than this place. We quit after 12 holes, we started at 1:06, left at 5:15, absolutely embarrassing. The site talks up a great pro shop with equipment, equipment begins and ends at shirts and towels, total joke.
Had a nice roumd
Crowded and course show stress from too many people.
Course was poor shape. Standing water throughout fairways, greens not to mention the very poor path cart ways. For the money they ask it not worth the play.
Not a world beater but for the price its what you can expect. Oldest public course in NC. Two distinctly different nines. Front is more wide open and flat, back is more hilly and wooded. If youre looking for cheap, easy round, look no further.
Well, it’s a Donald Ross course. It claims to be the first public course in North Carolina. It’s got an interesting layout. That’s the good. The conditions are not unfortunately. I have no idea on the financial stability of the city, but man it would be nice for them to fix this place up. Not a ton of public golf options in the area, this place should be great, but needs a lot of help
Golf now books your tee time when phone line is busy and mess up and charge you too many time and fairway should be better.
Great for hackers.
Historical Donald Ross design...course is kept in reasonable condition and is very affordable. Very convenient to anyone visiting Asheville NC
Endless fun. Has something for everyone. Back 9 is a riot!! Loved it. A must play Muni.
Overbooked, overpriced and the back 9 is always in bad condition/horrible layout. Staff isn’t very friendly.
Disappointing experience on a solid course. The course was a bit dry, with a couple of sparse patches on some fairways, but most of the greens were in very solid shape, and there were some beautiful views on the back nine. Unfortunately, this was overshadowed by the starter and the pace of play. The starter was unbelievably rude. Demanded I show him a receipt before I teed off, even though I paid online and therefore did not have one. Had to go back in to the clubhouse and have them print me one. Then would not let me have five minutes to take practice putts, even though there was not another tee time behind me for at least 15 minutes, and there was a log-jam in front of me. Speaking of which, it took me over five hours to ride 18. Every single tee was backed up two and sometimes three groups. Got a GolfNow for 19.99, but even with that deal, I probably wouldnt do it again.
Not a bad beginner course
Terrible experience. Had a tee time but no starter and carts almost backed up to parking lot. Decided to get rain check but may not go back.
Great place to play a relaxing but challenging round of golf !
Fun old time golf course. Front and back nines are completely unique from each other.Front is flat, back is quite hilly and wooded.
Great little Golf Course owned by the city maintained by the city well kept and they do have carts you can rent the prices are definitely reasonable
Great course with friendly staff! Cant wait to play there again!
Course is looking great! Great people, wonderful golf course!
Beautiful Muni golf course. Better than most. Get a cart if long distance walking is not your thing. Fair rates too.
It is a 2.12 star, but they dont over charge. Friendly. Nothing in good condition, but winter just ended. I enjoyed a high score day.
Worst condition in decades !! Temporary tees for months. 3 holes have swampy areas in drought conditions. Fairways fairly good. 18th green almost died from lack of water. Pope Golf needs to go.
Greens are decent. Tees rock hard/ some grass is non-existent, but, low cost, brings me back.
Amazing course. Cant believe its public
It was mine and my buddys first time playing here and we had a great time. The staff was attentive and helpful.
In terrible shape. Such a shame the city doesn’t take more pride in maintaining their home course.
Friendly staff as well as players they are all extremely helpful cost is low this is the place to be if you want a fun friendly experience
Classic Muni course. Great and friendly staff
Good greens!
Fun course with great people.
In pretty good shape considering the weather weve had
We have visited Asheville a few times, but this was the first chance to take in nine holes of golf. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The front nine were wide open and the fairways were in good shape. The greens had just been airated, so it was hard to judge the speed. It was a sunny 64 degrees and we had a great time.
Consistent. Course was in very good shape after the very wet winter and recent flooding
Need tee box work and some greens need work. Very friendly staff. 2.5 rating
Fun course that is very flat and open on the front nine and tight and hilly on the back nine. Cart path only right now and some standing water in places but not bad considering the rain here recently. Greens are in great shape. Slow play is only drawback. Very crowded on Saturdays!
Terrible condition for a city course. Disappointing.
I used to love going with my dad golfing here when i was a little girl, my favorite part was always being able to drive my dad around the entire golf course in the golf cart and i absolutely loved every minute of the good quality father daughter time that we got to share with each other and got to make memories that will never be forgotten and always cherished by us both
This golf course has perfect fairways and greens
The front nine of this course is very flat and wide. Not a very typical mountain course to start off. Fairways and greens and not very well maintained but for $38 for 18 holes its not bad at all. Very wide open and forgiving so its a great place to work out that hook or slice youve got. Back nine has more of a rolling and mountainous feel.
The course is in decent shape, but the layout is possibly the worst i have ever seen. Nearly every tee box is on top of the previous green, so there is a good likelihood that the group behind you will be hitting into you at least once or twice in a round. Its worth paying an extra $10 to go to a real golf course
I witnessed a womans car, driving in front of me, get hit by a golf ball today. I followed her to the clubhouse of the nearby golf course to see if any of the golfers or the management would own up to the clear and visible damage on the womans Honda. As it turns out, none of the golfers had the balls to admit theyre terrible at the game of golf, nor would the management accept liability. I have 3 young sons, all of which have shown interest in golf. Never taking them here!
Great outing
I love golf and the course isnt bad. However, their greens are a little rough. After all it is fall and getting cold out. In the summer its probably more kept up. The price a little high to play here too.
I frequent this course a lot during the summer (and sometimes in the winter if they are open). It’s a very good value and the course is nicely laid out. You can golf the front nine if you’re looking for nice open green-ways, or take on the winding back nine for a little more of a challenge. All in all it’s a great course at an unbeatable price.
Alot better since the property management took over.
In the past i shied away from this course due to its condition but this past year it has become a very fine and well maintained course. It is pleasure to play and the staff is always friendly and welcoming. It has become one of my most favored courses in the area. highly recommend a play there
Its a classic Donald Ross design although it doesnt receive much funding from the city budget so ya get what ya pay for.
Well maintained for 17 of 18 holes
By far the worst course I have ever played. This place needs to close for a year to get it back in shape. Don’t waste your money playing here.
Greens were decent . Tee Boxes in rough shape. Fairways need to be replaced.
If you want a nice course to play with friendly staff I recommend this course. It in good shape. The greens are fast and its layout is good.
First, the course itself is a great value for the price and the condition. I honestly didnt know what to expect playing here for the first time, and knowing it was a muni. I was very pleasantly surprised by the conditions. Fairways were cut nicely and well kept and the greens rolled true...and fast enough to provide a challenge. The reason the rating is only 3 stars is because of the starter. We told him our group were all about 10 handicappers and he told us we had no business playing from the blue tees, which for their tips, are under 6,400 yards. He also threatened us about playing slow because we insisted on playing from the blue tees. He said there are a lot of groups behind you and you better not hold up the course. Meanwhile after three holes we had caught up to the twosome in front of us (we were a group of three), and no one was even within 3-4 holes behind us the entire day. I dont care if this guy has been a starter at this course for years, he was extremely rude. If yo dont want people playing from 6300 yards, dont offer those tees.
Wonderful old Donald Ross Muni course. Front 9 is flat but the back is hilly and very tricky. Bent grass greens were very true. Tees and fairways were a little shabby but it was great fun for $40 green fee/cart.
I thought the staff was very friendly and the price was right if you book online. When I played it, the fairways were in rough shape, but the unique holes on the back nine made up for the course condition.
Obviously, someone did a smear campaign because their car got hit by a golf ball. Not sure why they think the course is responsible? Why not call the city they own the course? Staff is friendly and the course is always in great shape. Company that runs the course supports local charities (Brother Wolfe) and local kids. Middle schools and high schools use the course no charge.
Course in decent shape. Most greens are above average. Nice course overall. Enjoyed the round. Guy behind the counter was a jerk.
After golfing Wolf laurel and Reems Creek. We golfed Asheville, we were disappointed. Greens and fairways were in poor shape. Will not be back. I rather spend a couple extra bucks and golf a nicer course.
ATTENTION VISITORS! Do not go here to golf. As I was driving by the golf course this morning a golf ball hit my brand new car leaving a large dent in the hood. None of the golfers had the integrity to own up to the damages on my car. When I went to talk to management they acted like they didn’t care and said they weren’t going to do anything...all I want is my dent fixed. That golf ball could have shattered my windshield! They don’t care, probably don’t care about their customers either
Great course. Very challenging on the back nine but will definitely play again.
Reasonably priced game with or without cart, but the grass needs some attention in several areas.
This course has changed management from the city to a private company. Since then the course is falling apart and every year they have it, it seems to get worse and worse. I hope the city takes it back before it is unrecoverable. It is handy and will do for a convenient round but it is not in good shape in any way unless you like crabgrass everything and bald burned spots on greens and fairways. Sorry guys. I am sad to say this about a course I have played for about 10 years. It is in the worst shape ever. Perhaps the weather has not cooperated this year with too much rain or whatever but, the end result is not good.
As someone who frequents this area, I have to say- this is not the type of business I would give my money to. Not only do they have poor service, but they blatantly allow their patrons to litter around their grounds with no recourse. Did I mention they are directly across the street from the nature center? A complete disregard for locals and wildlife- Also, WATCH OUT FOR STRAY BALLS cause they WILL hit your car and they do nothing to hold anyone accountable.
Very nice golf course.
Nice people but the course is not is very good shape. No tee boxes--most were in the fairway. Burnt out greens, and very rough fairway conditions.
Not worth the money! $45 is way too much for this course. The back 9 is in horrible shape! No 6somes, the ranger split us up. Also, the course requires everyone to have their own golf bag. 2 people cant share clubs... Even if its your own 12yr old son?!?! What a joke! He only owns 3 clubs. Dont waste your money here
This is an unkept ragged municipal sorry to say. Tee boxes ragged sanded or overgrown. Fairways on back in bad shape. Cart paths broken up and no signage so sometimes hard to know where to go and really bad tee boxes. There are several blind shots on back nine. If you are looking for a Cheap place to hack at a golf ball then it will do. If you play golf routinely and like nice courses stay away.
Enjoy playing golf here.
This place is terrible. The condition of this course will never get better because the people who play it have no golf knowledge/etiquette. Clubhouse gave the foursome behind us four individual carts and each one of them drove the carts on the tee boxes, fringes of the green and holes labeled cart path only. I would only play this course again if I got a decent Hot deal on golf now
Usually crowded but a good course
As far as I can say, as one to have played this course for the first time, I was pleasantly surprised! Fair pricing for the maintenance and challenge that the course offered. And, with booking a tee time for two, on the interwebs, I got a discounted rate! VERY PLEASED...nuff said!
A little rough around the edges but overall a great place to play.
Great value. Great condition. Friendly staff. Fun course to play.
Ross front side, j.lo back side. Cool track!
This place is the worst!! Everyone is rude. Management is terrible and does nothing to help with customers problems. Last time I was there I witnessed a woman complain about a ball hitting and denting her new car and management did nothing but shrug her off. If you want to get treated like trash but cant afford to go to a real country club then this might be the place for you.
Wet...but nice
Great value and they keep the greens in good condition. The staff is pretty nice and the course has some interesting components
Front nine looked a little busy so I asked to start on the back. Staff neglected to mention that the course is in the worst shape its seen all year. (Back nine that is, I cannot speak for the front and Im not going to bother trying) Teeing off meant avoiding the watering system while teeing up on mud. I was just about ready to walk off after playing behind a rudely slow foursome. Dont waste your time, money or frustration here, go to Reems Creek.
I LOVE this golf course it has a great price for 9 or 18 holes and has i nice clubhouse i would reccomend for anyone with any skillrange. I would hope that this place has better matenence but the price makes up for it
Not bad for a quick 9 after work
Enjoyed both days. Back nine will give you a run for the money but its wort it.
Donald Ross design in decent shape for a muni. Reasonably priced green fees and snack bar, friendly staff.
Lots of history behind this course. Greens are in good shape and a fun course to play
Not the Messina course, but it seems to be well maintained and theres always golfers on the course.
