Unexpected pleasure on a beautiful day. This was George Washingtons side farm and overlooks the Potomac, just like Mount Vernon. There are gardens, bowers, nooks, vistas, even rocking chairs on the porch of the mansion: perfect spot to a make a memory. The iron gates are re-purposed from the original White House. Easy paths, accessible, and a wide open space if children need to let off a little steam.

The history and beauty of the place are amazing. The childrens garden is closed due to the big germ as my children call it. They enjoyed running barefoot through the soft grass, looking at all the flowers and insects and getting lost in the maze. We saw a bee keep preparing to feed the bees in the hives. All 3 of my girls proclaimed they will be getting married there one day after seeing the tent and chandeliers on the side of the house. I guess I better start looking for a 2nd, 3rd and 4th job.

Beautiful farm house part of George Washingtons estate with nice walking trails which connect naturally to the Mount Vernon Trail. Its free and open on Saturdays from 9am - 1pm in April-Oct. You can bring your pup to walk the trails! Check out the sunflowers, beautiful plants, and bamboo trees. While were exploring the grounds, a wedding was being set-up. Great venue!

River Farm is the headquarters for the American Horticultural Society (AHS), but its so much more than that. Its a property along the Potomac River just outside of Washington, D.C. with a story. The story starts with the River Farm property being established in 1653-1654. It was then sold to George Washington as an outlying property to Mount Vernon. It transferred owners a few times before going up for sale in the 1970s. Thats when then Russian Embassy made an offer to purchase the property as a summerhouse (a dacha). Due to public outcry, the AHS took over the property.Despite being AHS headquarters, its open for the public. You can tour the historic brick home on the property and walk the gardens alongside the main house and near the Potomac River. Theres even a childrens garden. With plenty of green space, you can even bring a blanket and enjoy a picnic. If you have kids, its a fun little spot. If you love history, its a must-visit. You can even find a gate that was at the White House for 120 years!

Went to River Farm for the first time today with my wife and infant daughter. We live in Alexandria and have passed by this place on a number of occasions but weve never gone in. This place is the national headquarters of the American Horticultural Society. It used to belong to George Washington. Its a beautiful place to spend time with family, especially children. The entry is free, you cant beat that. Its all well landscaped and has alot of rolling hills, trails, flowers, gardens, etc. You can walk down to the Potomac River although I think you cant actually go into the water because they rope it off. This place has a large tent pavilion for a formal party such a wedding. The pavilion has powerful fans all along the top of the structure. You can also picnic in the grounds if you want. They have a small childrens garden area. When we went today, there were so many butterflies. You can become a member too and you get the American Gardener magazine plus entry across the country to other associated gardens that charge an entry fee. There was a gift shop there but we didnt go in.

Beautiful spot on the Potomac. Easily accessible, lots of parking, no fee, pretty empty, great to clear the mind and enjoy a nicely tended horticultural area. Not too overdone, so it feels much more comfortable and less preachy than some other, better known, spots.

Being a big fan of all the member gardens of the American Horticultural Society, I guess I thought that the gardens here would be more intensly curated, but while the displays are definitely deliberately planned, the feel of them is different from other Botanical gardens. The grounds invite wandering and interaction with them closer to a park like what someone could have at their home as opposed to the elaborate beds and bright colors at larger garden exhibits. Very nice location. The big Bodark tree (Osage Orange) was my favorite part.

River Farm is a secret treasure unknown to many. One of the few, no admission fee experiences available today. Today I was fortunate enough to be invited to a tree dedication ceremony to be held at this beautiful place. The views are endless and the serenity is priceless. A must see. It is actually part of George Washingtons properties.

This place is absolutely spectacular, plus its absolutely free! From 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day, come and visit what George Washington considered to be one of the best views of the Potomac River. The gardens and grounds are gorgeous no matter what season you choose to visit. There is a Childrens Garden specifically designed for younger children to play, explore, get messy, and immerse themselves in nature. There is also an edible foods garden, a prairie grass section, and an abundance of flowers wherever you look. There is a bathroom on site, inside the building itself, and the parking is easy and free as well. Truly a gem in this area.

Attended a wedding & reception here in mid-June. My comments pertain to the location & building themselves. The grounds were beautiful, with an abundance of flowers overlooking the river. Upon arriving, it was easy to see why someone would select this as a wedding venue. However, I do think it would be useful for the location to create a flatter surface for chairs to be place on the sloping hill where Im assuming many people get married. Terraced steps would work quite well. The building was historic and had quite a bit of character. However, the mens bathroom had a broken sink handle and didnt have soap the entire night (not sure who was responsible for that). There was a fair bit of confusion from our ride-share drivers upon arriving because the entrance gate was closed off with no signage about what to do.
