A very beautiful place! Wonderfully arranged space. Its a shame that I didnt have a chance to visit the inside of the Capitol ... I hope to definitely come back and take some amazing new pictures
You can enter this building for free, but will need to pass through a security checkpoint. The stairwells are historic and fascinating. They best thing to see here though is the Senate and Assembly chambers. Each chamber is ornate and extraordinary in its own way. You may also appreciate the hall of governors (with paintings of each NY governor) and the collection of flags gathered from each war that NY soldiers fought in. Elevators are available to get up and down.
I will give full rating to this place ..!! An amazing place to visit, I had a very good time to walk over.Although it’s long weekend very less people to maintain social distance.Loved the capital building. Must go
If you have a plan for a long drive with kids and family from Providence or city of Boston to Niagara falls then Albany will be a very nice stop over before evening. You can enjoy the capital of New York state in the evening and in the very early morning when you can again start driving from the city of Albany to Niagara falls.
If you’re visiting the area, it’s well worth checking out the capitol building. The craftsmanship and history of this building is pretty amazing. Photographs don’t do it justice. You need to see this with your own eyes. The detail in the stone carvings is a must see. The concourse that runs below the area is also pretty cool. You can stop in Logan’s and get a delicious sandwich while you’re there.
Visiting friend from Detroit, He took me here for the tour. Once you go through the security screening, you can resister at the ground floor for the tour and it is free. I do recommend to do the tour as tour guide is friendly, knowledgeable and answered all kinds of questions. Also guided tour gives you access to more area inside the building.Yes they have invested unthinkable money in to designing and building all these beautiful history. I truly believe that many people will get to see it and enjoy the site for years to come !
I have a goal to see every State Capitol building at some point, and during a quick road trip I was able to see Albany. Amazed at the size and detail, this building didn’t cease to amaze. Not a lot of time to do much touring or learning about it all while I was there, but I plan on researching more when I get home! Thank you for preserving such a work of art and American History.
Took the guided tour and it was awesome, very informative! I would highly suggest the tour plus allow more time to go back and read other stuff after. You learn all about the capital and history of the state of NY, it was very expensive to build this building and they used 4 architects. Theres a little snack shop in the bottom to grab something before the tour. Beautiful building!
This is indubitably the most amazing architecture in the city of Albany. This place reminds of me of the edifice Captain and his seven children lived in the movie “Sound of Music”. This structure is breathtakingly beautiful, historic, classic and medieval. I was in here with a friend and saw lots of folks taking photos and hanging out at the park.
Such lovely city . Nice place to take pictures . New York State Capitol gonna bring you a lot stories about the state whiling you explore the city.To get there from NYC you can take the bus from Greyhound. It’s cheaper and the location to drop off is great . Once you decide go there google ”ALBANY “ on your phone and look up for “things to do in Albany “ or “people also search for” . It’s gonna help you to find the most tourist place of Albany .
Here, i was lobbying for the Community and Climate Protection Act (CCPA) and the Climate and Community Investment Act (CCIA) to get passed. This building is not only a great place to visit representatives but it’s also a really gorgeous place. Usually, anyone can go in as long as you go through security. It’s really cool to be surrounded by all the New York State senators and assembly members. If you happen to be in Albany I would recommend this place!
Historic for its construction, and mixed blending of architecture. Amazing stone work on the Millionaire Staircase. Tours available. Most recommended. Open until 7.
Best place to visit in Albany (with the museum) its free and they offer also tours around the capitol with specific information, they also show where the court happens. You will learn the history about this building, would see some exhibitions and take nice pictures on perfect spots.
I took a tour with my sons class on a field trip, and it was actually really interesting, and the architecture is stunning. We took visiting family recently too. Its free, as are the Corning Tower observation deck and the museum, so its a nice and inexpensive way to get some history and sights.
Nice place I love this historical site inside the Capitol building is amazing I love this
It was a great stop to make while our trip to Niagara falls. Buildings are admirable!
So much to do here. Its a beautiful place. We took the tour around the Senate and our guide was knowledgeable. Definitely a must place to visit as well as the other museums. And theyre all free!!!
Amazing. Grew up and have lived in the Albany area for 31 years and have never been to The Capitol, just toured it the other day (free) and couldnt have been more impressed. So much architecture and history and the tour guide was great. Strongly urge anyone who hasnt to take a tour or just wander the halls (totally open to the public during business hours Monday-Friday).
Beautiful building and plaza. One of 11 state capitols that doesnt have a dome. Completed in 1899, it is truly impressive!
This is one heck of an experience, especially if you love great architecture. That old saying, They dont build them like they use to can certainly be used to describe what an outstanding example of mans imagination and his hands can achieve. Its such an opulent and physically impressive structure. I cant find the proper words to do it justice but New Yorkers should certainly feel proud to have a capitol building such as this. Every New Yorker should see it and go home and brag about it.
Lots of amazing details went into the capitol building. It is a good architectural visit and see how the various architects created their vision over the very long time it took to build the capitol. Do the guided tour and also do the self-tour to get the most out of your visit there. There are so many things to look at and discover, plan to be there for at least 4 hours to discover as much as possible.
What a excellent place to visit and sight see
Symbol of a wonderful architecture.
Such a beautiful place. I visit at least once a year and it never gets old.
Nice walk around the NYSC area....weather cooperated.
Such a friendly place! The buildings are amazing to look at
Very beautiful building 3 side almost same view. Public can’t entrance during office hour.
Very impressive inside and out. Go during session to see all the action. I’m a big fan of the modernist capitol plaza across the street.
Very nice historical place. Very beautiful and very unique.
Impressive, almost opulent, vast building, self-guided visit works if you miss last guided tour. Great that halls of power are so accessible.
Incredible interiors. Marble. Granite. Carved sandstone. The masonry carvings with random faces were very interesting. Excellent art gallery.Definitely a worthwhile tour. Matt, our guide, was excellent and knowledgeable.
We went on a weekday tour. It was just after a large High School group, and the guide took care to avoid them and the noise that came with them. Our group was just a few folks, so made for a very relaxed and quiet experience that encouraged observation and learning. We saw a good portion of the building and also lingered afterward to poke into a few spots we passed earlier for a closer look. There are lots of inconsistencies in the story of the Capitols construction that prompt questions these days. Such as, how is it possible to be 8 million dollars over budget (total spent $12mil) after spending the initial 4mil, before the governor notices? Why did nobody notice after the project was $1mil over budget? How is it possible to lose a huge portion of historical records in a fire which specifically targeted the library, with a single victim who did not make it out? Werent there fire safety precautions in place in case of such event? Was the fire an accident? How can you leave just a few stone carving elements unfinished, becoming an instant eye sore and looking embarrassing in the most important Chambers of the building, while the carvings on the staircases are finished? How can you make ceiling decoration out of paper when you know the roof leaks and youve got buckets on the floor to catch the water? Why install giant non-working fireplaces, when you know you need to heat the building in winter, so could use real working ones? There are still lots of questions to ponder and research, and the tour is just the beginning.
Incredible architecture. I was gobsmacked.
The tour is free and takes an hour. You can also do a self guided tour. Either one Id reccomend. The architecture is amazing! Something to see if youre in the Capitol area.
The capitol building has great architecture and good looking.
Lovely public building enclosed in very nice surroundings, deserves a long walk around...
Absolutely stunning building. The architecture is like nothing Ive ever seen. Love visiting and walking the halls and seeing the different floors. Always a pleasure seeing lawmakers too!
The history and amazing architecture....a must see if you visit Albany.
At long last I got to see where all my tax dollars went!
I went for an Advocacy Day event and hope to come back as a tourist. Beautiful architecture!
Worth stopping and getting a free tour. A win win. .lots of history and a million dollar staircase. ..
How to rate this place? It holds some of the most courageous, dedicated, selfless people... But then it also holds some of the most disgusting, corrupt, and greedy. There is a cool museum inside though, and the Million Dollar Staircase is impressive.
Beautiful historic place where State legislators come together to create legislation that governs our ways of life and social construct. Its an incredibly breathtaking architectural place worth visiting.
Amazing experience in civics.
Rally for the trade unions to pass a bill Union works
Visited and took pictures cant get into building security tight
Amazing historical information and architecture.
A beautiful state Capitol
Great group of modern buildings plus one of the oldest State Capitals and perfect photo place
Such a nice place to visit
We had a wonderful time in The Capital!!!
Its fine. A bit odd but fine.
Great place for a walk, bike ride, roller skating, ice skating (seasonally) and even just relaxing. Plenty of places to sit and read a book or people watch. Easy access to the Museum and their are many great local landmarks, memorials, monuments and pocket parks surrounding the plaza.
I am one of those who always assume capital city of New York state was New York City until i visited Albany. It was a high wow factor at the State Capitol - to begin with, it is one of a very limited list of places in NY that is free for admission but what surprised me was almost every angle of it was a picture perfect scene, inside & out. Parking is free after 5 PM before it close by 7 PM weekdays. Make sure to see the grand Million Dollar staircase - costed a million dollars at the time it was built, appreciate the sculpture along the stair evolving from single biological cell at the ground floor to higher intelligent mammals to its top floor. The outside front stairs and garden were very elegant. I also had an extended stay at the park next to it - took lots of photos with the huge I Love NY signage, the dumb sharped performing art arena, and those beautiful buildings around the park.
If only the laws coming out of this place where as quality of the construction. Our tour guide did a great job
Absolutely beautiful building. Several historical displays.
Beautiful building with a highly comprehensive tour for public visitors. The tour goes over history, state functions, and other various topics and encompasses the legislative session rooms as well as the governors press room and other high task areas. Definitely worth the visit if you are in the city.
Beautiful building. Lots of European touch both in the exterior and interior.
A great visit that all should make at least once. The self guided tour was really beautiful.
Very beautiful place. Be sure to see the demon
Astonishing historical building with eclectic architectural features. The detail in the Stone work is worthy of many hours of study. It appears to be an engineering marvel as well, built entirely of masonry. To bad the public is not allowed to see everything there, as it is still a working governmental structure.
Best place to check out in Albany. Open to the public during business hours. Self guided tours available as well as tour groups. worth checking out. Nicest tourist attraction in Albany.
Excelent visit! Super recommended!
Lovely, interesting and very eclectic building. The tours are free and well worth it - you can always roam freely afterwards with more insight...
Awesome. Great tour guide. Hand carved sandstone is beautiful!
Beautiful building with many interesting details. The tour is very worth the time.
This is an amazing building. And the state employee who gave us the tour was very knowledgeable. He confidently spoke of the construction of the building and its history. And helped us to appreciate the artistic genius that went into every stitch of the five floors of this gorgeous piece of architecture. If youre in the area check out Grandmas restaurant.its not far away and offers a wide variety of incredibly tasty food at a very reasonable price. Dont leave the place without having a piece of the homemade pies. I go back to all Albany just for another piece of the strawberry rhubarb pie. I bought a whole one to take with me!
The place itself is worth visiting Albany. The Million Dollar Staircase is absolutely mind-blowing. I attended the haunted tour, was very interesting and entertaining.
Took a private tour with summer interns working at various federal agencies. Very informative tour and a beautiful building. I will be visiting again.
It was wonderful very beautiful place
Gorgeous building! Walk around! See it!
Central Administrative Office of the whole NY State. Elegant huge building boasts its fine arts and dignity.
We did the free tour on a Saturday morning and it was a great addition to our weekend.
We went there in our way to Vermont. It was nice to walk around downtown even though it was cold. I am sure that during summer with warm weather, the view of empire square should be great. Its an old-fashioned square that looks out a movie from the 50s.
A magnificent building! The area surrounding the Capitol is filled with gorgeous buildings- our government at work.Museums aboundMuch to see and learn in AlbanyMake plans to visit
Beautiful place and I thing thats where our taxes go on renovation and maintain clean!!!
Went to protest several times and always treated very well by all capital staff. I really enjoy going there. Great visit for school children.
Cool architecture and a free museum.
Wonderful view from my hotel! It reminds me of a castle!
Amazing! Cost more than $25 million during1899 is a lot!!! Indeed worth the money they spend on this building.Must go and see the New York State Capitol! Highly recommended for architect students, history buff and nice venue to take wedding pictures.

Neat place. Pretty awesome how the buildings are lit at night. One can take nice pics.
Beautiful architecture, worth visiting inside and friendly staff! Plus weekly farmers markets during warm month!
Great experience for the whole family. The tour guide was knowledgeable, friendly and answered all questions. The building itself is a piece of architectural art! Every where you look are intricacies. And its free! Just show up and enjoy the tour.
Pretty building but the fences around the outside make it an eye sore. I know we have to be safe but I think there is better options
It was fire. I protested for a few hours. Beautiful architecture inside
Love it . We try go in free tour, but looks like weekday no where for tourist.
Definitely reccomend the free tour of the building. Anna was super knowledgeable and answered any questions that arose.
Beautiful place to visit
Our senior adult group had a great experience, tour guide Michael was super fantastic! Thanks for hosting us for a few hours.
Beautiful. Came at night and no one was around.
We need resign to run. This means elected persons must resign their office to run for another office. It is simply common sense. Ask yourself if you want to run for an office, will your employer or business continue to pay you even though youre doing something else full-time?
Fail on public rights. Guys came in and video recording in a public accessible place and asking questions I would like to know. Police escalated it and did the walk of learning actions. Public employees made not doing their jobs it looks like.#PublicPays4It
The architecture externally and internally are both awesome. The tour guide Matt was awesome as well. Respected and answered all our queries.. :)
Amazing place we didnt expect it to be so good
