Beautifully preserved Moravian community. Great craftsmen and exhibits. Beautiful place to walk around and enjoy.
Awesomely maintained piece of early American history and life, and still an active community with full time residents. A must-see!
Beautiful area for walking, learning town & religious history, enjoying your family, and even having weddings, photo shoots, & etc.
Such a beautiful and magical town to wander around. The Williamsburg of the South.
Beautiful historic town. Small enough you can see most of it in a day, but interesting enough to spend 2 days. Its a great place to disconnect from our electronic lives
Christmas is a unique time to visit. There are so many things to see and experience. From the Candlelight tea tours to the self guided tours to the horse drawn carriage tours, there is so much to learn! It is every bit a full day of interaction and information to experience. The craft abilities shown will make you catch your breath along with the fact that there are still people who are carrying on the traditions. The African American church, both cemeteries, organs, musical instruments and school are a must see. The bakery is always a treat not only in the scrumptious goodies, but in the history of the bakery. The Smith shop, the furniture museum, seed lab, individual gardens, bricked walks, everything is informational and intriguing. It is well worth the trip and the time.
Yes Christmas is a magical time to visit Old Salem. However the highlight and also let down of our visits there for 2019 was Halloween Nightwatchman Tours. We went Oct 30 And they stick to no refunds and doing tours in the rain however definition of light drizzle as stated in web site and what was happening is different for us all so plan accordingly. It was pouring rain on our tour to us it made it a little more old world and realistic I give 3 stars because I love old Salem however we called several times to get updates for the tour due to terrible weather to only have confusing answers or very non-pleasant employees talking to us. The final answer was a stern woman who was a manager talking down to us “just look on Facebook” and hung up the phone. newsflash not everyone has Facebook. I highly recommend O.S. Has Clearer terms on web site and a better way of communication to customers spending the high dollars for the tickets (The tour guide did try her best considering it was raining so hard but seemed a little disheveled telling the stories and had to constantly read her note book instead of the tour the night before when it was not pouring down rain and that Guide knew it as if it was a play) We are going to try again in 2020 because there is a lot of potential.
Wonderful living history district with knowledgeable and personable interpreters.
Ive visited Old Salem numerous times over the years. I was pleased on my latest visit that new buildings and exhibits were open.In the buildings you can see various trades performed and learn about the Moravian history. I enjoyed the Doctors House; Boys School as I had not seen those before but it was great to see the other buildings again and get questions answered by the staff.
Came across this place unexpectedly and it was fascinating. We had seen Williamsburg a few days before so this was right in line with the fantastic historical preservation and interpretation. Our only wish was that wed gotten there sooner so we could spend more time.
We came to visit Old Salem with only partial days worth of hours. I was amazed by the fact that this living museum still head occupied homes mixed in with the buildings that were available for tours. I was impressed by the knowledge of many of the people that were in the buildings to narrate the historical presence help by that particular building. We did choose one of the places to eat and the lunch was fantastic. The bakery who was quaint and amongst those arent visited with me, we bought quite a bit. I only wish that we had a few more hours to visit the many buildings we didnt have time for. This is a place you definitely could spend an entire day at, and possibly still not get in everything. Well worth the money spent.
Visit and learn the hidden story. The history is enormous, and the craftsmanship is beautiful.
Beautiful arealots of historic buildings
Great time here, learned a ton as did my sons. Very educational! Wish wed had more time, to see everything in detail takes most of the day but we arrived in the late afternoon. Id recommend getting there early, wear comfortable walking shoes and bring an umbrella or poncho....and ask lots of questions! The interpreters in each house/museum are very knowledgeable and love to see people curious and asking questions. We cant wait to come back!!
Great place to take an afternoon stroll with your loved one
Wonderful place to immerse yourself in rich Salem History, loved the Salem Tavern Museum where George Washington lodged for two nights
Great for pictures and a beautiful walk in historic Salem.
Such an impressive collection of Early American Southern art from the Old Salem settlers. 10 bucks will allow you to take your time exploring and viewing impressive artifacts, furniture, and art. Lots of cool history.
Nice place but a lot closed on a Saturday and a several educational areas charge that shouldnt, in my opinion. One restaurant open and over-priced. Good but over-priced
Living history in a lovely serene setting.
I live here so if course that means that I have never taken the tour. However I walk there frequently. I love the cemetery. The tea cookies at the bakery are awesome. The pokemon hunting is great with a ton of pokestops and gyms.
Well maintained place with lots to see. We throughly enjoyed it
A great hustoric place worth visiting.
Interesting place, shops are staffed with knowledgeable folks. Educational. Not many places open in Jan.
The best thing about Old Salem is that its completely free to come and visit. being part of the Moravian Church, theres a lot of history of early American Moravian Church in this little town. While it does cost extra to tour certain buildings, it still makes a nice place to take an afternoon stroll.
A wonderful place to visit and learn about history. The only downside is tours can be a bit pricey. Maps cost money too. But this sign (past the covered bridge) has a free map. You can go into many of the shops, such as the gift shops and bakery, for free as well.
Great for family activitys
Disappointed.I grew up with Old Salem and even worked there for two years. Old Salem under its current administration has gone down hill. The historical emphases of Moravian history is fading into the past with the rise to the historical revisionism of Salems president, Frank Vagnone. Today, a visitor will receive a mixture of Vagnones creativity and a sprinkle of historical Moravianism. Old Salem has changed. Instead seeing buildings and floor plans has they would have been in the 1700s or 1800s the visitor is seeing a mix of Vangnones creativity with some historicity.Sure, why does it matter that Moravian history is being represented through the eyes of some than through factual history? As a visitor, you can just go get some of the facts, some of the story, and have fun while paying a pricey ticket to do so. To the average visitor, it may not matter. Why should it? The administration doesnt think it should. What should matter is the fact that Old Salem has lost good employees because of the current presidential administration. It should matter that folks working there are treated and paid poorly. It should matter that these folks love Old Salem and want to present the real deal to every visitor. It should matter that they cannot, because it doesnt meet the creative vision of the current administration. If you want, then go and pay the expensive cost, but know that youre not getting the real story. Know that youre not getting the good, bad, and ugly of Old Salems history. Instead, youre paying $27 for one mans vision. Youre paying $27 to go one mans playground instead of learning about the people of Old Salem and how they would have actually lived.I hope the Board of Trustees and President Frank reconsider their current direction. I hope they return to presenting Old Salem as it was instead of how they think it should have been.
Museum general admission only gives you access to a few limited rooms. But if you like old furniture its worth seeing.
Great place to know about the history of a beautiful City
