Let me start by saying that the effort made by Colonial Williamsburg staff to enforce indoor mask wearing and social distancing has got to be the best that Ive seen from any establishment that Ive been to this year. Theyve even gone as far as installing foot holds at the bottom of bathroom doors to promote less contact in the facilities. I felt comfortable taking my grandmother to C.W., and highly recommended it to others. Now onto the tour of the Capitol Building. Chris (our tour guide,) not only showed his passion for history in his presentation, but also his love for our country, past and present. He spoke with such conviction, that even those who were dragged through the tour unwillingly would be instilled with both a sense of patriotism, and a realization that the constitution was not only written to help govern our new world, but to allow us to strive to be a better country with each day that passes. If every tour guide has the same passion as Chris had, then I guarantee that your experience here will be unforgettable.
Worth stopping here and touring the original location of our capitol. Loved learning about its history, how the judicial system worked back then and even hearing about Blackbeard.Upstairs wasn’t open due to social distancing guidelines, but even the abbreviated tour was stunning! A must see whil you’re here.
Unfortunately, because of the virus, and an overnight leak, we werent able to do the normal tour. However, the lady that gave us a brief history of the Capital, if you will, and the events leading up the the war, was very knowledgeable and did a great job.If you like history, and America, I highly recommend a visit to Williamsburg and the Capital Building.
Beautiful reconstruction of the original Capital. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable. Colonial Williamsburg is always a great place to enjoy history and relax. Great atmosphere for families and children.
You feel as if you have been in 1775! Great building & great Tour
This is the Capitol building that is a part of Colonial Williamsburg. A period dressed person takes you on a tour of the building and tells you the history of the building and the people associated with it. It lasts about 25 minutes for the tour. The staff we dealt with were friendly and likes for you to ask questions. All of Colonial Williamsburg makes accommodations for Covid and everyone had on masks. If you enjoy history be sure to take in the Capitol building while youre there to listen to their story.
One of the major buildings along DOG street (along with Bruton Parish, the Wren Building and the Governors Palace). The tours are very informative and the guides are well-versed in the history of the town and of the building. While it is a replica building, one feels transported back in time. Also worthwhile to plan to attend one of the special programs. IMO, off-season is best to avoid lines and heat. Either way the Colonial Capital is a great place to visit.
Beautifully rebuilt to the original specs of the first colonial capital. Friendly and knowlegeable staff.
During the time of Covid-19, Colonial Williamsburg is mostly closed. We picked a perfect fall day to visit and were able see the Capitol Building and the Governors palace and not have to wait for tours. These tours were limited to 10 and covid-19 safe.
Its a very memorable experience to have been able to visit this awesome place...my feet literally stood in history
The interpreter here knew his stuff. Love hearing about the founding of our nation.
Absolutely beautiful on the inside! Due to the virus I was unable to view the second floor but otherwise the tour was informative and well presented!
Great tour! The staff was knowledgeable and gave a clear summary of the period, including some of the political problems associated with all people being equal at the founding of our country. Since this is right at one of the bus stops in Williamsburg, you have no excuse not to take the fifteen minute tour.
Historically very interesting and the guides were pleasant and knowledgeableGood experience
This and the Palace are the preeminent restorations in Colonial Williamsburg. Must visit. On this site Virginia delegates began the separation of the 13 colonies from England and George III control of the colonies. The structure is the third built on the site and this replicates how it appeared during the signing of Virginias Declaratin on Independence. Such historic notables sitting in the original Capitol were Thomas Jefferson, James Monroe, George Washington and Patrick Henry.
Wonderful experience! Very educational and interesting! Beautiful!
Love history. Loved seeing this building.
Wonderful historical site to visit. The face mask on our guide was causing trouble to understand what she was saying. The place is clean and beautiful.
Interesting architecture with authentic furnishings and artwork throughout a real glimpse of colonial British domination
Great tour. Knowledgeable staff.
I highly recommend no less than a full day at Colonial Williamsburg (followed up with a day at Yorktown). We are a nation (and people) with an incredible history. To bad the anarchist cant understand that...
Great Tour!! Staff is very knowledgeable!
Tour guide was very knowledgeable and kind. Beautiful tour, a must-see for sure!
Great tour, wonderful tour guide. Very informative.
Great introduction but costumed staff that were courteous and helpful.
The building is grand, but the real star was Austin our tour guide. He was very energetic and engaging. He really made you stop and think about the location and its significance not only as a historical landmark but its relevance to modern government. Very well done!
Interesting justice system by the colonists.
Cool building but the tour guide didnt speak loud enough to really hear everything. Although the building is a replica its impressive.
Excellent restoration of the colonial capital of Virginia. Outstanding historical presentations and events within the building. Well worth visiting.
Love the history behind it, great presenters.
Get ready to be exposed to our history. Maybe even get an idea of what our forefathers were trying to do.
We heard gruesome punishments meted out. Branding with a T for Thief. If you were unfortunate enough to return here a second time your access to the ‘leniency’ plea would be denied. And you would be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. So. No second time stealing. Of course the judicial system was imported from England. It wasn’t any more lenient or cruel. Just the same. But it had to handle new and different crimes. And rely upon a smaller number of adherents to the justice system. A number that would continue to grow with increasing stamp taxes, then tea taxes. The dwindling of the powers of the Kings and Queens of England was inevitable. This far away form the center of that system, there was plenty of space to Dream and imagine a new world and with a rapid growth of dissenters, no matter how tall the magister’s chair was, they felt English law needed to be left in England. Enter our founding fathers and their Constitution! This place made it ALL REAL! The guides and the actors really brought this home.
As always . Great historical place and events
Learn something new each time.
Love Colonial Williamsburg, great family activity! Spent a week here, could spend another few days seeing it all! Highly recommend while in Williamsburg VA!
History lover and just enjoyed touring the area
Amazing Tour of the old Virginia Capitol building. The reenactors did a great job, were funny, and succinct with their history of the building. Great job!
Another excellent example of historical architecture and how early colonial government worked! Guides are great (Spencer was awesome) and you learn a lot!!! Family friendly!
My husband and I found the show very enjoyable and the performance was on to remember.
Id you love history as much as we do then you find it difficult to not enjoy the tours. The facilities are taken care of by those who obviously love the place as much as we do. And the guides know their subject-matter, doing a good job of leading groups through time.
We loved the recreation of the legislative House of Burgesses (an interactive play). Williamsburg is a historical must see!
The musical performance about the Capitol was excellent and educational. I am a school teacher and I learned a lot, and it was an impressive performance. My two young teen boys loved it.
Wonderful interactive historical site.
An important piece of our story of Independence.
Very interesting area to visit!!! Several live performances depicting life in Colonial America, dressed in colonial style clothing, cooking, making clothes, shoes, tools etc. Wear comfortable shoe for walking.
My favorite display at Colonial Williamsburg. Reminds you that the seeds of Revolution were first sown in the colonies before the Declaration of Independence was signed. The staffer in this picture was particularly passionate about here presentation.
Beautiful, great tour!!!
Replica of the original. Yet full of history. Wonderful visit.
A Wonderful Landmark.
Glad to see them doing something.
Beautiful building with a lot of Rich history.
The young man who led the tour was wonderful.
This place is just amazing, beautiful, and the tour guide was perfect.
An important historic building at Colonial Williamsburg.
We participated in Cry Witch. This was a very informative and well orchestrated trial of a proposed witch. My whole family enjoyed it! My youngest is 12.
Great historical spot with visiting. Included with admission to Colonial Williamsburg
Colonial Williamsburg is an awesome destination. The tour guides are great. Its neat to see people in consume acting out roles from history.
Wonderful actors and audience participation in early Colonial America politics.
Sean was an awesome interpreter!
Historic Williamsburg located in Virginia is a history learning experience, which I highly recommend, it takes us back in time to the civil war. Prepare to spend time exploring the different areas via bus tours. An amazing historical experience for the entire family
Loved the history. The reenacting was marvelous.
The interpreter or presentation offered by gentleman was absolutely the best of entire village. He was so informative and shared all history of events on location. The Afro-American gentleman was fantastic and we thanked him profusely upon exit. The dining area is definitely how I want to renovate my home like when I return. ;)
Very interesting history lesson.
This is one of the best individual tours while in Colonial Williamsburg. Be sure to include it. The tour guide was very knowledgeable and animated.
Awesome staff and cool opportunitys. Really loved the trial.
Great time to be had at Colonial Williamsburg! Learn about law and the legislature in our colonial period with excellent interpreters! The atmosphere is grand. The art and architecture take you back in time!
Most interesting walk through history, outstanding guide Men was amazing in his knowledge of the site and its history.
Good history, knowledgeable staff members
Love it️️
What a lovely building. We attended a program here about a court case. It was fun, interactive and well acted. I love the programs at Colonial Williamsburg, and enjoying them in these magnificent buildings is a pleasure
We took our 12 year old and 9 year old grandkids with us and we all loved it. So much fun and full of fun facts.
Grand illumination was the best one yet.
The reenactment was so cool and they made it fun to learn how Virginia was first to vote against the stamp act that stirred up the Revolution!!! ****A must see***
Nice and quiet. No big crowds.
Learned so much with all the re-inactments.
Williamsburg is always an enjoyable experience. The woman who gave us the tour did need to work on her vocal projection. She really didnt have the command of the room as other guides do.But still very interesting and informative.
Its nice to see old court. They maintain it very well. You can see wigs and hear interesting stories.I recommend to go there a weekend of October. They have a play and show us the trails which are based on the history. There were kids watching the play, but they enjoyed it too. Not long, and its actually pretty fun. Great opportunity to see old time trials. They also show old time armer and wapons. T he best part is that they are all free!
A very cool walk through of a historical, rebuilt, capital building.
Neat piece of history and excellent interpretation.
Although the building is a reproduction, it provides a great look into Colonial Virginia, and the 13 colonies. There has been at least one modern international summit meeting held there.
You must go to Colonial Williamsburg if you are patriotic, you must listen to realize how far this country has strayed.
Very enjoyable.
Fascinating tour and info about legal system in colonial Virginia
This was our first stop when we arrived in Colonial Williamsburg. Austin was our guide, he was awesome! Very knowledgeable, he really helped getting our children excited to learn even more about the town and the time period. It was the perfect tour to start off our trip.
If you like learning about history this a an excellent place to come with your family.
Our guide is quite simply outstanding. He is knowledgeable, friendly and professional. we had a great tour AND we learned a lot about history! Both good reasons to go back!
Wonderful tour! BRANDTONS midday, 11:15 tour was phenomenal! He was very entertaining, authentic, and did not miss a beat on his energetic and informative tour.
Attended a special interactive program here (Resolved...). Very well done and entertaining while teaching about the formation of our country.
