Great place! When our kids were young we would buy the membership. Kids would play there for hours.
I have heard of the Transportation Museum but had never went even though Im a life long Wichitan. I was very pleasantly surprised! There are steam engines and a ton of cabooses that you are allowed to go in. The people who work there are very pleasantly and informed about their trains. You can tell they LOVE their job! There is even a WWII train section. Its a great location, fairly priced, and a gem to the Wichita community. My kids loved it and want to go back! I would highly recommend the Great Plains Transportation Museum. The view is also great!
Grandson loved climbing in and out of the train cars. I wish was bigger but still had a great time.
It was really cool to see this. I really enjoyed this visit. I love trains. Not a very big exhibit but worth going to see. 7.00 for adults. And you get to keep the pen.
Ive been to a lot of train museums but never one where the train was parked on a bridge right next to the museum. Its a shame they dont have a bigger budget because my granddaughter will probably never see a working steam train. I would just recommend this to anyone young or old for the fact that this part of our societie is going away very fast. I would highly recommend. I hope someone can donate enough money to ensure that they can stay open and profitable.
This place is AWESOME! My family came here when they collaborated with the Toy Train Museum. I worried my son wouldnt have that much fun. He is a little younger than 3. My worry was unfounded!!! Myblittle boy had a BLAST. He loved looking at all the trains and train cars and he couldnt get enough of being inside them. We will kost definitely be going back!Finding parking was a bit difficult, but other than that everything was great! Our tour guides were delightful. The gentlemen was so full of info and the older lady was just fun to talk to as she told us stories of her husband who had passed away but was a huge train enthusiast. It was an outting I know my son will not soon forget and neither will I or my husband! If you or your kid love trains this is the perfect place to go.
Small but alots to see and an awesome experience for train lovers
This place is incredible. Everyone is super friendly and helpful. We love being able to see and sit in the train compartments. It is a great place to go with the kids or for a fun stroll.
My train loving 6 year old absolutely loved it! The volunteer who was working was so helpful and full of information about the museum and trains in general. I learned quite a bit myself and my son had so much fun interacting with the exhibits and watching trains go by.
If you judge a museum by the quality of the exhibits and staff, it is top notch!Entirely run and staffed by volunteers, the museum has quality exhibits (ok, its hard to go wrong with large steam engines, but there is so much more), an attitude that makes you feel like family as you walk in the door and decades of knowledge available to be absorbed. Very limited hours, a factor of the all-volunteer operation and even more limited budget. Well worth a visit, whether you go for an hour or five. $7 for adults was a bargain.
Trains and cabooses to climb on. Watch real trains pass by. Friendly and knowledgeable staff.
The staff really make this so much better. They are so knowledgeable, funny and will give you lots of interesting wichita and train history. Make sure you ask them some questions. They have some hands on train cars that you can climb on. One that is really massive. The outside exhibit is hands on. Great for school aged kids through adults. Younger children would need a lot of supervision. There are stairs, elevator and (outside) uneven surfaces.. Everyone should go at least once.
Awesome museum and friendly guide. Great time going in the trains!
Really cool place. The gentlemen working there were very friendly and had lots of knowledge of the trains.
My nieces birthday. An amazing venue!!
If you like trains like I do then this place is a must visit. There are all kinds of locomotives and train cars on display. Many of these you can have an actual hands on experience with. It allows you to see how much and yet how little the equipment and technology has changed over the years. The guides were very interesting and informative. There are many pictures and maps on display inside as well. Great place to visit.
Interesting place, small but fun. Most of the museum is outside
Really interesting! We got a great, super in-depth tour. I completely recommend this place!
A beautiful place in the heart of my favorite city. Staff is friendly and knowledgeable. The place is clean and well kept. Perfect for anyone who loves trains or just being outside on nice days. I went there frequently as a kid and I volunteer there sometimes with my brother. Check it out if youre in town!
One of the coolest places that i didnt knew existed. Got to climb on lots of trains and knowledgeable staff walked us through the exhibits. The gift shop is mostly donations which allows for great prices and all of the proceeds go to the museum.
The museum was so much fun and very educational! My oldest son loves trains and I never slowed down to think about our rich history involving trains and how busy downtown Wichita was when trains were running in and out. This is apart of Wuchitas history that deserves our support.
The only Railroad museum Ive been to that allowed to really explore the locomotives.
Went in 2017 don’t have a photos, but it was a great experience.
Fun for all ages and not very expensive!! I would recommend checking it out if youre in the area!
Fun and BNSF transcn is right next to it. Big trains all the time we was there running by. The kids love the engineer whistling and waving.
Awesome for kids. Very nice train museum where you can climb aboard.
Worth a stop. Youll probably want to give yourself 1-2 hours if you want to see all the exhibits.
This place is a must! The people there are very knowledgeable and friendly, had an absolute blast
I love this place! Ive been part of it for 30 plus years. Lots of trains and history of railroading in Wichita and Kansas. Highly recommended to this museum to anyone with children and people with an interest in trains.
Great place to take the kids. Bob was a great tour guide! Learned some about trains, but wear a jacket if it is cool out!
The beauty of this museum is in its simplicity. Theres arent a whole lot of trains there, but it cost next to nothing and the kids would be content playing for hours (even though the adults wont). I loved that it was literally about 30 feet from the railroad track with a train going by at least once an hour. Also a great place for a toddlers birthday party. the kids love the caboose.
Staff always friendly -- Pizza and Sandwiches are great!!!!
The engines and cabooses are great... I just wish they had a passenger car, dining car and a club car for children go walk thru.. back when trains were the main mode of travel these cars were very elegant you dont see that anymore.. which is a shame..Oklahoma and Texas have an agreement for passenger rail service. Kansas has yet to jump on the bandwagon.. I for one with my G-daughter would ride the train down to TX. for something different to do on a weekend..
Something different to do. You get to climb in and on all the old engines.
If you love trains this is a definite must stop in Wichita. The collection of rolling stock is small, but you can actually go inside a few of the pieces. The GPTM has a neat collection of memorabilia and was a neat place to spend a few hours. Next to the station you can watch the trains of the BNSF, SKOL, and UP.
Very friendly and informative staff who clearly love what they do. Fun for the whole family.
Great for kids and train enthusiasts. You can climb up inside almost a dozen engines, cars and cabooses of various ages. Pretty cool!
Great place to take the kids. They get to have fun while learning about history at the same time. Lots to see and do, lots of hands-on learning, as well.
Visitors can get aboard real train car and locomotives
Exploring the trains was a fun experience
Fun place for kids. Open access to old train engines and cars. Kids get to climb and explore. They didnt want to leave!
A real gem of transportation history, an amazing steam locomotive, diesel locomotive, cabooses, and many various other train cars and historical train artifacts. Fantastic!
If you like trains this is the place to go. Awesome!
I love train museums. Stop by and enjoy
Great for the whole family! The workers were very helpful and nice!
Really cool!!!!! Lots of trains to climb on.
I guess just not as interesting as I thought. Im not a huge train person though so take it with a grain of salt.
My son Jordan love the black steam locomotive train engine.
Fun for kids and train lovers. Great hands on exhibits.
