Amazing place to camp, not too far from DFW and is a good fun specially if you want to get away from the city with your little ones. They have camp sites with it without electricity. The camp sites without electricity are located near the lake. Me and my kids enjoyed gazing the stars at night. Definitely recommend if your looking for a weekend of fun.
This past weekend, stayed at campsite #63...I cant say that I slept very well with the noise from the adjacent oil wells and military helicopters flying over head. The campsite was located at the end of the road, which I though would provide privacy but instead cars would drive up the road, (presumably to go to the restroom) and all night our campsite was illuminated by high-beam headlights...The campsite and restroom was clean but not much terrain variation, so it wasnt a good hiking destination. It has thus far been our worst Texas state park camping experience and my wife has made me promise to never return to this site.
Pristine and interesting state park. This park has beautifully maintained campsites with neatly trimmed grass that creates a sort of border around each site that otherwise does not have many trees (where I stayed). The sites are mostly organized into keyhole configurations but each is large enough to give some privacy and there is a middle area where I imagine groups could gather. The bathrooms are clean and well maintained with hot showers with good pressure. They are not the newest, but they are clean. The lake is popular on the weekends and is large and good for kayaking or other small boats. The staff seems nice. Overall, highly recommended!
Great state park. The sites were big, very well maintained and spaced apart nicely. The bathrooms were some of the cleanest we have encountered. The camp hosts were terrific and available all the time.If in the area again this would be a stop for us. We spent 6 nights here.
Very well maintained park. The small wagon wheel camping circles are great for camping with groups. The size and condition of our spot made for the easiest setup weve had in our pop-up.Staff was very friendly and helpful. Park feels remote, but Wichita Falls is closer than it seems for supplies or a restaurant meal.
Was a nice place for labor day weekend with not many people. Good for boating camping and swimming at the beach. Do note there is no fishing by the beach area and signs were not posted but the ranger will let you know
We stayed on site in our camper for 4 days just recently. The sites are pretty nice. They have a concrete slab picnic table at each camping site and offer 20,30 and 50 amp hookups. Plus water. We didnt see any sight that had a full hookup with sewer...but they had dump stations across from camping sites. While the state park was nice and the lake is huge...it was so HOT we werent able to throughly enjoy it as much! They were under an excessive heat advisory the entire time we were there! They have a pretty neat well kept dock to fish from and at night they have the green lights that attract certain types of fish, the whole dock was very lit up, which was nice! We ended up catching a few needlenose gar and only one smallish catfish...we fished about midnight and it was still sooo hot. Several areas of the lake are mid shin to waist deep so fun can be had by all ages in the lake. They also have lots of covered picnic areas close to the lake with bbq pits. Bathroom are kept clean and are staggered throughout the entire park! We would love to go back one of these days were it isnt as hot as this trip was. It was just plain miserable.FYI we have TMobile and had no signal anywhere but at the dam...idk if thats just TMobile or all cell services!
Nice park and nice size campsites BUT they should call this campground Ant Colony state park. The ants were sooo bad and there was no running from them. The entire park was completely over ran by fire ants. We had so many bites it was insane. Seems they are trying to kill the ants but their attempts are far from successful. They need serious professional help to come treat the entire grounds. If the ants werent such a huge problem then the campground would be absolutely great and Id give a 5 star. Lake was beautiful, Staff is really nice, and the park was very clean. I want to go back but the ants are too big of a problem.
Stayed in campsite 41 and 42. Campsite 41 was close to the bathroom so people would cut through there to use the bathrooms. It didnt bother us. The campsites were great, really clean with covered picnic tables. The bathroom and shower facilities were very clean. The lake is pretty shallow with sandy ground and little to no rocks, so great for toddlers. No beach area but the water height made up for that. The color is reddish but still a little clear. Got to see geese by the lake. The picnic tables by the lake werent great since they were full of wasps so we brought our pop up canopy. Its a small park but nice for a quick get away. Will come back again. The prairie dogs were no longer in this park. So you wont see them here.
Nice facilities! The staff is always friendly. Fishing pier is used often. Well kept
A great place. Very clean park.
As an avid camper I’ve been to nearly every state park in Texas. This one is quite unique, the scenery is not very spectacular and the fact the you have oil pumps running 24/7 inside the campground definitely doesn’t help create a respite from the world feel. There are quite a few longer hiking trails and a nice lake swimming area. The staff is friendly and helpful and do a great job keeping it clean! Overall still a good time and you tune out the pumps after awhile but if you are looking to retreat into nature this probably isn’t the place to go.
Nice and clean. Friendly people. Needs more trash cans.
Very nice park! It was well kept, there was lots of room to spread out, and great access to the water for boats and beach goers.
Chocolate lake water, big red ants, and dirty grill and picnic table....Not a wuss at all..... lots of spiderwebs and wasp nests make the site a little sketchy...Stayed two days and enjoyed some fishing.... I mean fishing... not catching.... 1 nibble in two days... even with live bait....I think the dock was pre-war..seems like could be a good place with some more care... some many better parks to pick.Bathrooms were clean though....
Clean and impressive camp sites. And a great spot for swimming. I will be back to experience the overnight stay!!!
This is a pretty nice park for a quick stopover in the RV. However, the lake was too rough to launch our kayaks while we were there. I would give four stars but the campsites are not near the water and the condition of some paved surfaces in the park are not good at this time. There are lots of large, deep pot holes, especially in the boat launch area. Most are seen pretty well during the daytime, but be extra careful if driving at night right now. Another downside is the fact that to reenter the park, you may wait in line behind others who are registering to get in the park. There is no separate lane to get in. This park also does not accept the preprinted car and RV passes that can be printed out online when reserving a campsite. So, just save the time and get them at the park. They also called us the morning we were headed to the park and left a message to return a call to them to confirm our reservation, something weve never had to do in our nine years of camping in many other Texas state parks all over the state. But, when trying to call back, the line was busy for quite some time which was an inconvenience to us as we were trying to pack up the RV while at another park in Oklahoma. We were concerned that there might be a problem with the site we reserved, so we kept calling. We are wondering why the preprinted passes wont work and why that is even an option to print them online if they wont work. We are also wondering why we need to confirm a reservation by phone that morning now if we are required to stop at the office upon arrival anyway to get new park passes printed. I guess we will just plan to make a call to the park office the morning of our arrival at any TPWD park going forward. Anyway, its a pretty nice park once you get past the entry gate with your printed permits. Just watch out for those potholes.
We really enjoyed our stay. Our campsite had a ton of stickers but most sites didnt. We fished, hiked, cooked out and it was a great time all around. If you take kiddos ask about the junior ranger program
Wasnt too bad of a park overall. It does feel run down, but the nature and views of the lake I was able to find made up for it. Love the prairie dogs, and I strongly recommend hiking the North side of Onion Creek trail and seeing views of the other side of the lake.
Nice state park. The prairie dog colony alone, made the trip worth it. Good fishing, resident Canadian geese, prairie dogs galore. Lots of wildlife. Park has an 18 hole frisbee golf course if thats your thing.
Lake Arrowhead is a very nice clean park. We always enjoy going there.
Love this area. Entrance fee is a mere $4 and they do have Disabled Veteran discounts for their plus 1. The area is clean, well mai6, with polite and very helpful staff.Camp grounds, boat docks and swimming areas are near bathrooms. Fishing areas everywhere. Gar, crappie, bass, catfish. Lots of fish!We gave fished here numerous times and also kayaked. We love this park.
We liked how quit this park was. They had full hookups. Its to bad none of the sites were on the water. Loved watching the prairie dogs in the park.
Probably would have rated higher BUT the wind was howling so my experience was limited to some short hikes. Plus the trail I really wanted to use was closed with no explanation of why or when it would reopen. The trail I was on most of the time shared space with a frisbee golf course which seems, to me, a bit clumsy. Fortunately it was too windy for anyone to be on the course so I did not have to watch for errant discs. The Lake itself looks very inviting, but again winds were over 50mph so no access to confirm. Oh, mostly mesquite and scrubby trees along the trails so bring water and sunblock as shade will be at a premium.I hope to return when the weather is better, maybe rate it more highly.
Great access to the water. Nice camping areas. Cleanest bathrooms and showers we have been to. Didnt catch any fish but had a great time.
Lived on the lake for the 5 year drought. It wasn’t a nice place then and it still is not now
Nice grounds very clean plenty of picnic tables, lake was rough and shallow areas.
We always have fun when we camp here bathroom was clean and fishing ok
It was really nice place to unwind in our current situation and my dog loved it I cant wait to go back and the fee was okay
Great place to take the grandchildren. They caught a big catfish and they were shocked 13.5 lbs. They loved the prairie dogs. We will return.
This park is not a well manicured, fancy park. It is brushy and very natural. I love a more green big tree kind of park, myself, but this is nice too!Mesquite trees in abundance. Great lake and beach area, as well as frisbee golf and play ground.Yall come on and enjoy nature!
Wow - clean bathrooms and friendly gate staff! A nice, local state park near Wichita Falls. Crappie fishing just starting to pick up in early March with high water levels, and you cant beat fishing for free in Texas state parks. Dont miss Prairie Dog Town, just down from the fishing pier.
Clean RR, quiet, easy check-in, clean campgrounds, nice hiking trails, easy bank fishing, clean swimming hole, easy grill/fire rings.
Great camping trip. We decided to setup out tent in a power & water area so we were surrounded by camper/trailers. Staff super friendly and really engaged with my two kids. We checked out two Jr ranger backpacks that came with guides on wildlife and plants. Our site was PERFECT, close enough to the bathroom, far enough away from the oil well that you barely noticed it. There was a fair amount of shade, and the covered picnic table was a great bonus. Kids cant wait to go back to watch the prairie dogs (which were all over our campsite) and go exploring. Nice small state park.
We are not expert campers but we decided to take our children on their first camping trip and thought this would be a good starter park to camp at. Being from Dallas it was under a two hour drive to get here and it was warm and beautiful in the day and cold and beautiful at night. Camping rates at any Texas State Park is a real deal for sites that may have water only or water and electric. We opted for a water only site for ten dollars a day and it was right next to the lake. There are bathrooms and showers nearby and each campsite affords its own privacy and small drive way area for a maximum of two cars. Extra cars pay extra rates. The ranger staff are very nice and check up (drive up to make sure you belong there) on all the campsites at night and it made us feel safe. Lots of things to do from hiking, fishing, boating. If you have a horse you can bring your horse here. The headquarters building when you drive in to pay has fishing poles, binoculars and bird watching books that they lend out for free (first come first served). At this particular park there is a large grouping of Prairie dogs everywhere. Where we were at there was a prairie dog town. There are two old fishing piers across from the boat ramp. They seem a little rickety but we got used to them. The fish near the pier are so used to being fished they will steal your bait. We pretty much used the opportunity to teach the kids how to cast or in some instances how to use their bamboo poles. For other fishing get on a boat or get in the mud at other areas around the lake. Lots of wildlife to see, a ton of birds like hawks, cranes, and geese. We saw the prairie dogs, possums, raccoons and deer. Wichita Falls is a short drive away if you need anything urgent. The state park has a vending machine for firewood. I think for two nights we used three large bags - we probably could have made due with two if the kids didn’t keep putting wood onto the fire. They are about $10 to $11 for each large bag and $6 for small bags. At the site we were at they had a fire pit and a grill that made it easy to cook and warm ourselves. Each site also had a covered picnic table. The sites were pretty flat and had grass. Not much clearing needed to be done. While we were there they had a presentation about animal skulls and taxidermy foxes so the kids went to that and were able to ask questions. Overall it was a great camping trio and we will definitely be back.
Beautiful state park and campground. Could use a good cleaning at buildings. This is our second time here and enjoyed it very much. Disappointed that we didnt see any of the prairie dogs that used to be all over the park.
We had a family reunion here. Loved the parking area. It is set up like a wagon wheel. Made it convenient for the family to have a little privacy. Also has a very nice fishing pier. Well lit up at night! Now the dislike...they only mow just a small area around the campsite. We got there a few days earlier and other campers was pulling ticks off! The weeds/grass around the sites was very tall! They are VERY strict about how many cars are at your site. The neighbors would wait till the ranger left and pulled their extra visitors cars in.Then there was the constant chugging of the oil pump. Took a little getting use to.This was our first and probably last visit at this park. Disappointing.
Been going there for many years, good fishing friendly staff, law enforcement always around, feel secured
I absolutely loved the prairie dogs!! They were so much fun. The geese were pretty funny as well hissing at us and the prairie dogs.
Beautiful little state park. The lady working at the entrance was very nice and helpful. Kids got to play at the 2 play areas. Plenty of room for them to run. We loved their prairie dog town. There were a lot of babies. We appriciated the attendance of the park police. Its nice seeing them when traveling through an area you dont know.
RV site 41 the campsites are pretty nice. It was 91 when we got there at 7 pm, but low humidity and really felt nice! We had elwctric site 041. All sites have a fire pit and covered metal picnic table. This site backs up to the bathroom on another road which means it is a quick 50 yard or so hike through grass to get to the showers, but it also means everyone else in the cul de sac walks through your campsite.
Wow really loved staying here. The staff was nice and friendly. We got some fishing time in. Also they had activities planned each day to do which was really cool!
Had a great time camping right on the lake it was a wonderful weekend bathrooms were clean other than the bathroom that was close to Star campsite was closed and it gets stung by three bees and was helped out by the front office with them sting pads. Love seeing the black tailed prairie dogs every morning the kids just loved it
Its a well-kept park, with lots of accessible shoreline around Lake Arrowhead and great fishing piers. The bathrooms are clean and adequately stocked, and the staff was very friendly. We imagine it would be unbearably hot in the summer, but its very comfortable in winter. RECOMMEND!
Nothing quite like a burn ban to set the mood right while camping. Turns out wasnt due to weather, but to the crude oil pipeline running right through the park. Instead of nodding of to crickets, we enjoyed the rusty thump of an old oil derrick working through the night. Gotta love Texas
Saw many pollinators and a few flowers with ranger L2020 Texas Pollinator BioBlitz
We stay at a lot of Texas State Parks and this is a good one with lots to offer. We stayed in site 41 which was a great spot. Right next to the restrooms and right next to many prairie dog mounds. There is prairie dog town, a little day use area you can sit and watch the critters, but the best prairie dog watching is in the campsite. Basically the top half of the campsites have them everywhere and a lot of fun to watch. We also saw hawks, deer, geese and rabbits around the park. The campsites are arranged in circles with the sites like spokes going out from the road. Made it super easy to turn around and back in our pop up camper. RV pads are quite long, should accommodate any size rig. The arrangement can make getting to your site a bit confusing, but they do have signage up with the sure numbers listed. The pads themselves are older and some could stand to be repaved, but we found it to be fairly level, Ive been to much worse. Hookups were good. The park is mostly mesquite trees, which arent much for shade, but each site had a covered picnic table. The park is far enough away from major roads and highways, so no traffic noise here. But still close enough to Wichita Falls in case you want to go into town quickly. We made the quick trip up into Oklahoma for a couple little casinos there, about 30 minute drive. They have a great fishing pier and poles to borrow for the kids as well as loaner disc golf discs for the course there. There is a swimming area that looked nice, but it wasnt the right time of year to swim.Plenty of easy trails here, though we didnt go on them as it rained a good bit and was too muddy. The folks at the headquarters were super nice. We got there just a few minutes after the official close and unlike other parks we have gone to and show up at the same time, they cheerfully checked us in. There isnt a park store here, but the headquarters does carry souvenir magnets, patches, pins and hiking sick medallions, which was important to us since we collect the medallions and magnets for every park we visit. They have a super cool design. The restrooms are a bit older, but they do a good job of cleaning them every day. They actually had hand soap and paper towels which is uncommon for a State Park. Most dont offer that or if they do, arent great about stocking it. There are only a couple restrooms, so where you camp might have one close, might not. Didnt use the shower, but they looked ok.The one real negative I had is the oil jack out there. They have been pumping oil since 1955 and the jack runs pretty much all the time. I could hear it at night when trying to sleep and it kept me up a little, but it certainly wasnt the loudest oil jack Ive heard. I wish it didnt run at night, but the park likely has no control over the timing. It has a little sign with info, but didnt give any real history, just info about oil and its uses.Overall a great park with lots to offer and do.
Picked up some licenses. No issues.
It is so much fun there and it is a great place for kids and camping or going out on the boat I think you will love it
This little state park is full of prairie dogs. It even has a dedicated Prairie Dog Town (though youll see more of these curious rodents by the picnic area and playground). The trails in this park are just mowed grass through prairie land, without elevation or change of scenery, so its not a great park for hiking.Theres a disc golf course, with free equipment use from the park office.Theres a fishing pier, boat rental, and swimming area (with a wide, shallow beach). If youre looking for a fun picnic stop, or a day outdoors, the prairie dogs make this a fun visit. If youre an avid hiker, or want to camp for several days, this place might be too boring for you.
Visited in March. Great time forphotographing migrating fowl &the prairie dogs posed for a imageor two...
I absolutely love this lake.
The swimming was a no go. Dirty and gross. I get it no life guard but keep the area cleaned up to make people want to come swim. Waste of $ to get in to not do anything but go home to go to pool.
Clever park layout gives great privacy at each site
Nice place for a day picnic if u dont mind paying to go in, but the camp sites are away from the water so I prefer waurika lake
We went to the annual star party put on by the 3 rivers foundation and it was AWESOME! AMAZING! SPECTACULAR!! Everyone was very kind and welcoming, it was such a fun educational experience, and a night to remember. We got to see Jupiter, its moons, Saturn, and many other beautiful sights in the night sky. We will definitely be attending the star party again next year!!
Away from society to enjoy the sounds of nature....and mating calls
Greeat time. Very clean. Loved it
Great park with a bit of interesting oil well pumping history.
Love it and one day Ill have a boat in it.
Nice staff, went above and beyond to accommodate us. Enjoyed our stay very much.
The place is pretty nice and the game warden was awesome!! Im from San Antonio so this place was different but not to shabby.
Very helpful staff. The park is beautiful and quiet and the prairie dogs are everywhere and so cute
Was not crowded in January! Nice pull throughs and back ins with covered picnic tables for each site. Level gravel pads.
Great boat dock so you dont get wet while loading or unloading.
Nice and relaxing.. fish was biting but didnt catch anything
Lotuses, herons, turtles, cat tails and more. A lovely and peaceful little lake.
Love this park you can catch fish standing up or sitting down. Lol
Very spacious spots, lots of cute prairie dogs, lots of awdul mosquitoes though.
Good spots. Lake not so much
The prairie dogs! THE PRAIRIE DOGS!! Might be a nuisance while camping but we had so much fun on a day trip to see them, and we had no idea theyre so active. Theyll come right up to you and talk, even gang up to surprise you! Dont feed them, but do take the kids to get up close with the wildlife!
Amenities up to par. Will be back.
DFW trash removal.com had a nice day catching blue catfish.
Beautiful place, large sites, great separation.
Didnt get to stay, spring break going on, but looked like a very nice state park.
Super clean, great facilities and friendly staff! After a late start we ended up needing to find a closer camp than our original destination for the day. Fortunately we were able to roll up and pay at the gate. We were greeted by park ranger Aaron who was friendly and kind. Highly recommended!
Great swimming & fishing area. 2 playgrounds. Friendly & helpful park employees!
This is a really great state park! Tons to do, the park is well kept! Maintenance crew keep everything extremely clean! Everyone working there really makes you feel at home! Cant wait to go back!!
I love going to Lake arrowhead everytime I come down to visit. Great for a person who loves nature and the great outdoors. We always go to the opposite side of the campgrounds to get away from people and enjoy the quiet sounds of nature, the water lapping the shore and the wind through the trees. Beautiful if you love true nature.
One of my favorite state parks to camp in Texas. Love that there is a disc golf coursr in the park! And seeing the prairie dogs is always a bonus.
Nice view, but still smaller private areas, mesquite fire wood, nicely built picnic areas, roads are good, and hot showers too!!
Amazing! End of august, nobody, nearly. Lots of loops 6-7 spots each, majority electrc and water. nice mowed grass, nice access to the lake, flat shoreline, clean, tables, pups could swim. Many many birds, very peaceful. Absolutely love it, especially with 4 big dogs travelling with us.
Great place beautiful sunsets and lots of fun
Campsites are well maintained as is the rest of the bits of park I saw. Long fishing pier to cast from at no extra charge. Professional and helpful staff.
Had a great time, plenty of cut grass to walk you and your dog and the fish there are pretty big and often you will get bites
Nice park. Great hiking trails and a solid disc golf course
Nice quiet place to camp. Good crappie fishing
Very clean and well maintained. Due to high water levels, half of trails are closed. There are water only tent sites. The RV sites are water and electric only. There is a dump station. If you have a boat, this is the park for you. Fairly large lake with boat launch and swimming area. I gave the park two stars due to the quality of the electric power. When I went to unplug to leave, my surge protector had been fried by the parks power supply. Camper is ok but the $200 surge protector is shot. We were in site 22. Use caution.
Took the whole family here went fishing and the grandkids had a great time
I looked this place online and was pretty happy with the photos, did my reservation online. My husband and I love primitive camping which means: without neighbors, electricity, running water, bathroom facilities. You camp in a remote location and provide everything for yourself. However their primitive camping is a joke. The circle area as In one spot is so tiny that the regular electric and water stops are larger than this circle... which apparently this spot is for 5 campers. NO it is NOT! I would say 2 max campers and even then you walk 5 steps and you would be in their side. They have the area already made for you, they mowed the grass and thats only where you can camp.I was highly upset you are all buddy buddy with the other campers. I give it two stars, one for the other campers I was with, very respectful and the other star was for allowing dogs. I wouldnt recommend swimming here either. Also check out time is 12/noon. They do give you a yellow paper thats says the check out time, however the website and the map they give you says 2pm. Overall this place is great for RV and fishing. If u do come here just camp In the regular spots.
A great place to fish and camp. The parks people are really nice. Just remember to bring your own firewood because you cant gather wood there it must be brought or bought from them.
Very well kept Park.
Love this place I just moved to bowie tx and this places is by far the best place its so quiet peaceful being from grapevine tx I can fish go on trails enjoy the view have cook outs and just be in touch with nature
