An excellent opportunity to hike in such beautiful surroundings. I particularly enjoyed the bike riders and their friendly attitude towards us. All of the bike riders we encountered were fun to see.A photographers paradise of photo opps. Difficult to find a bad view.Several small ponds were gorgeous.Boots and a walking stick were a good decision as was my camera. There is a lot more trails to explore for us in the future. Hats off to the creator of the park.
OMG, best trail system around the WI/IL border, although the WI folks probably would prefer we stay away! Anyhow worth the cost to keep the systems up & clean. You folks rock..
Beautiful- Brown trail. First timer on new mountain bike. Very well maintained trails. A tree was down, we reported it and the guys were there to trim and remove immediately.
Great views. Challenging trails. Hikers beware ... The bikes can come around certain corners fast. Most do a good job of announcing themselves.
Plenty of parking at the start of a beautiful trail. We do some great road riding in this area.
Very well known for mountain biking & well deserved: trails well tended & well marked with good variety of levels.
09/15/2018: Attempted to hike the green trail today (7+ miles - moderate to more difficult). I dont recommend hiking here. This is more for mountain biking. Went counter clockwise as instructed for hiking. Yielded for bikers (lots of bikers). Trails are narrow. Lots of mosquitoes due the recent rains. Mosquito repellent (deep woods off) didnt work. Trails are varied with dirt, sand, rocks, and packed dirt. Lots of obstacles (rocks, roots, and fallen trees). This place will challenge the most experienced biker. If you want to hike, I recommend that you go across the street to the Nordic Trail. The trails are not well marked.
Great mountain biking trails in the Southern Kettle Moraine State Forest. the trails are very well maintained by a volunteer crew that really loves what they do because they are bikers too...In addition to being open every good weather/trail conditions day of the year - there is also a fall color festival mountain bike event in late September that is great fun for everyone. You can rent, buy or have your bike serviced nearby at Backyard Bikes which is also known as the general store. Before or after your ride you can enjoy the excellent food and drinks they have; including a wide selection of craft beer, delicious smoothies, gourmet coffee and fresh made sandwiches from the deli counter.
I love this place my new favorite spot to hike i recommend the blue path which is 12 miles
Nice trails for mnt biking. I have ridden here since the early 90s.
Awesome cross-country trails with the occasional rocks and roots section. Over 21mi of singletrack, if you connect over to Emma Carlin trails. Lots of options for the beginner and intermediate rider. Some steep climbs and rocky descent for advanced.
Best in the area, large range of different level loops. Definitely more for mountain bike than hiking, pretty much all single track.
Amazing place for a nice long hike
I usually ride the Palos triangle but with the amount of rain had these last weeks I decided to do the hour and half drive up.If you have never been here be aware thay there is $5 Trail fee and there is a parking fee I dont remember. If no ranger is available, have cash ready for the self sign in. Since i never been to these trails I met up with some people to show me around and we did the blue trail. Im amazed by how well maintained these trails are and how some parts are accessible for Emergency vehicles! Worth the drive from Chicago suburbs and I had a blast. Will come back for sure. All credits go to the person who took my pictures!
Fun, great place for a beginner to learn bike control
Excellent mountain bike trails for all skill levels
Great hiking
Good hiking but lacks signage.
Very well maintained trails. Tons of fun. Free wheelin.
Great trails, nice place for a great hike!
Fun shredding in the woods! Closer to Chicago than you think.
Fantastic MTB & hiking trails.
Beautiful trails. Twisty, difficult singletrack...but fun and challenging. Its hard to go wrong here!
Great 4 mile dog walk today !
Its great. Stay away.
Love being out here. Need to make it more often.
Excellent Mountain Biking! There is a Wisconsin DNR use fee to use this facility but it is so worth the money. I highly recommend stopping in here to do some riding. Thank you Wisconsin for making places like this available and keep up the good work please!
Call for update before go.Admission fee. None Wisconsin license plate $11 daily.Trail station available and self-registration envelopes are also available at these stations CASH or CHECK only. A receipt can be torn off the envelope for proof of payment.Really good single track and well maintain. Easy to difficult depends on which trails. I love red color the most.Mountain bike available for rent at La Grange General Store and Backyard Bikes.
Great trail conditions today. Grippy
These are some of the best mountain bike trails I have seen. They are going through changing terrain with plenty of challenges and some smooth riding. You can probably go for 25+ miles without seeing the same part of the trail ever again
Great place to mountain bike
The variety of paths came in really useful once we realized the stroller wasnt going to make it on these paths (btw, unless youve got one of those strollers with the bike tires, it wont make it on the paths). Our older kid still wanted to walk, and there was a short, easily navigable path we could quickly enough that my wife and or younger kid didnt get bored playing in the field. The hike was beautiful. I couldnt believe the variety of environments we went through on such a short walk!
Really nice
Great mountain biking and hiking
Varied, beautiful trails even in winter. Great place to hike.
Fabulous mountain biking.
Lovely place to hike.
My boys just loved the trails and cant wait to come back. Trails are clearly marked, different skill levels, etc. The skills course is a great feature as well. Bathrooms located near the entrance to the trails.
Variety of trails for hiking and biking. Open year round
Great natural trail. A few trails to choose from ranging from 1.5 to 9 miles long. Bring a compass though if it is your first time and follow the rules for walking and biking or you will end up walking in the direction of the cyclists and will get hit. So if just walking be careful. And bring a camera. Beautiful scenery!
Fantastic!! Awesomeness!! The bike trails are amazing and they have a trail for everyone at any riding level. People on the trail were very kind. Its a must ride for all ages!! We will be back !!
Love this place. Great trails always maintained.
Absolutely amazing trail system! Routes are clearly marked and signage is solid! Hope to explore more riding areas soon but will definitely be coming back to John Muir to shred the Stumpy when the weather turns back around.
Largest collection of XC oriented mountain bike trails in Southeastern Wisconsin. Everything from beginner loops to more rock technical loops.
This is a great section of trails located in southern Wisconsin. This location offers beginners, intermediate, and more advanced mountain bike trails. The state does a great job on upkeep of trails and trail signage. There is a bathroom at the trailhead and a few picnic tables there is ample parking however it can fill up. Trail maps are available and there is a large trail map at the trailhead (take a picture with your phone) The Emma Carlin section of this trail is for more advanced riders, and will test your technical and climbing skills. Always call ahead to make sure the mountain bike trails are open if there was rain within the last 24 hours of your planned ride. Take out what you bring in (trash), please have trail etiquette, communicate with other hikers/ riders, respect the land that we have the opportunity to use, and HAVE FUN
Great trials for all experience levels. An excellent skills course as well to build confidence
Excellent mountain biking.
The trails great ride (full suspension MTB) for up and down. First time there. Only got off my bike twice. Took me about 72 mins. All in all the only part I did not like was The Beach. Sand sucks, it was short though. Thanks to all that maintain the trail!!!
This park had the potential to be a great park for hiking and biking but as it is now I would not recommend it for either. The trails are NOT clearly marked at all. We tried to follow the white trail but most of the time the white trail was not marked. Other people we came across also couldnt find the trails they were trying to follow. Also the trails are shared by bikers and hikers. This would be fine except the trails are very windy and narrow. A lot of bikers go fast and we were almost hit several times by bikes. When we could see the bikes coming we had to stand in the weeds of the side of the trail.I think this park had the potential to be a great park for both bikes and hikers but I dont think they should share the same trails. The trails also need to be clearly marked.
Gorgeous pine wood forest...will definitely return for more.
Great place to ride a MTB lots of trails at various degrees of difficulty. Good parking, rest rooms
Loved the orange trail
Love love love it here!!! Could literally spend hours on the trails! I love to go whenever Im able to because i just love the fresh air!
The review would be 5 * ... but for nonexistent signage that left me in a dicey situation. I was supposed to be on an easy 1.75 mi loop, but after the first trail intersection, no more signs of any kind! Finally found a map, but with no reference to where I was on it! Not cool. My short hike turned into 1 hour and 45 minute slog. And it was getting dark!
Beautiful!
A lot of trails, but a lot of bikes also.
Awesome trails! However these trails are always packed, and you will either have to pass or be passed constantly. I prefer the trails over at Emma Carlin just a few minutes away, much less congested and very similar trails. Much more flowy. But if youre out for a large group ride, heck, you wont be disappointed in the John Muir trails.
So wet so quiet so great
Absolutely amazing mountain biking trails.
Beautiful hiking location! New trail markers are fantastic and made our hiking experience even better than last year. A big Thanks to all the volunteers who make this such a great spot!
Great mix of terrain from hard pack to sandy to rocky, tough technical climbs and downhills as well as fast downhills with roots and rocks to keep you on your toes and off the seat! Doable on a hard tail but full suspension recommended for comfort and speed. These trails will highlight weaknesses on cheap bikes. Very fun and challenging for all skill levels
The single track cross country trails here rocked! Super well maintained and with great signage. The trails all make you feel like you are going somewhere. No linking a thousand different short trails just to get some miles in. Take note that there are trail fees and it is only cash and there may not be anyone at the main hut. Also T-Mobile users better get your satellite phone ready because there is NO service out here.
One of the best bike trails in the area.
Nice trails for biking, but a bit too tame for interesting hiking. Signage for hikers (reverse route) is pretty soon and misleading in a few spots. Some signs indicate a trail direction more than 40ft after passing the crossing.
Great trail system for mountain biking, hiking, and cross country skiing
My favorite trails to ride. Everyday when it’s not raining and I’m here..
Nice trails! Many different distances.
Awesome trails and always great people around.
Walked the kiddie trail and a 1 mile trail, little muddy, but had a good time! Wear boots in spring. There are bathrooms there.
Some of the best mountain biking in SE Wisconsin. Lots of parking, various trail lengths and difficulty. Restrooms are pretty smelly, but still 5 stars because I don’t go there for the restrooms.
Best single track trail in the Midwest!
Great bike trails fun for all skill levels.
This place is fun. One way trail system works really well and trails are well groomed
The trails here are great. The volunteers who work on them are doing a fantastic job.
Best biking trails for a family ride or intense workout
I love the quiet
Great place for a hike!
My first single track! This is a well cared for and is worth the $5 per bike fee for the day. I would recommend these trails to anyone, take a few laps in the skills trail for some fun challenges.
Some of the best mountain bike trails in the Mid-West, and as someone who’s ridden in most of the country, some of the most fun in the nation.
I love mountain biking with my dad here!!
One of my favorite places to enjoy nature and natures God. Great trails.
Love the Blue trail!
Great single track for building up your skills. Ride the through trail from John Muir to Emma Carlin, itll kick your ass but it is really fun.
Nice variety of trails. They are well maintained trails and are a lot of fun. Definately recommend this location. Good for novice, intermediate or more advanced riders.
One of the best if not THE best place to mountain bike in the south wisconsin/Illinois area
Great trails, busy on weekends but still great riding. Hikers frequent and generally arent a problem for MTBers
One of the best parks for mountain biking that Ive been to in the wisconsin area.
Home is where the heart is. My heart is definitely always going to be at Muir. Great variety of trails for all levels and skills and a trail crew that rides.
Fun trails to ride. Awesome to hike during non riding season
These are some of the best trails around. Alpine Valley is great too.
It was a fun ride today trail were still snowy
Was blown away by this place!!! Trails for all skill levels, so be warned the hard trails are hard. I found that out the hard way lol.
Great trail system to be enjoyed by bicylists, hikers and cross country skiers.
