Great climbing gym. I am a member of the Worcester branch and have been once to the Watertown location but was not disappointed.Routes there are set a bit harder due to several high skilled climbers at the region.Very large. Has an interesting overhang over a inclined floor that is almost a top roping path with no rope.
Its Central Rock Gyms biggest facility, and they use the space well. Theres a great variety of climbing. Obviously the huge lead wall in the center is the biggest feature, but theres tons of top rope stations that run the full height of the building, as well as shorter top rope and autobelay stations on the second floor/terrace.The bouldering area is pretty expansive as well and there seem to be plenty of problems for all levels. I appreciated the near-total coverage with that springy floor and padding.Membership is only 99/month meaning regular use once or twice a week makes it well worth it. Theres workout equipment too, so its not all just climbing.Perhaps best of all, its easier than expected to reach via public transit since the 70 bus runs about a block away which makes it a best to get to from Cambridge!
Great routes.Nursery routes to pro routes! Super fun!
Central rock is my favorite place to climb in Greater Boston Area. Havent been to Brooklyn boulders, but very much appreciate the top rope selection, cleanliness, and consistent boulder-area padding
This has been, and continues to be the premier climbing facility in the Boston area. The tall walls make for exceptional lead climbing. Theres plenty of bouldering at the Waltham Annex and thats a good added benefit for members. The routes are really good. The staff is always friendly. The facility is clean (a hallmark of CRG). The terrain is varied and challenging. Theres a very nice community vibe. The numerous CRG facilities in the northeast really make for a great member benefit who can access any of them for free.
Excellent climbing. The walls are reset frequently, staff is friendly.
Really cool, welcoming atmosphere and a ton of things to climb on (top rope, bouldering, lead climbing, plus a gym and yoga classes - Im probably missing something).
Very clean, great climbs, friendly staff.
Do not come to this gym. Worcester gym is a lot better. Staff wise and wall wise.Half of the walls were being reconstructed and out of use.I asked for the bundle deal so I could get shoes and chalk added. The staff gave me a hard time about not being able to belay even though we did not request to belay that day.Worse experience coming back here. Worcester is genuine and likes to help people feel safe and welcomed. Not this place.
The climbs were challenging and enjoyable. There were a decent amount of classics on the wall. The gym was a bit warm, but I know how hard it is to air condition a building like that. For people unfamiliar with the walls, most of the bouldering is at least slightly overhung, but the ropes climbs have a wide variety of wall angles including slab.
Having visited all the climbing gyms in the greater Boston area, CRG is by far the best climbers gym. The Watertown location has a top-notch staff, great facilities, and an amazing community of climbers. All routes are set well, there is a wide variety of difficulties and styles, and the routes are reset at a good frequency (~2 months with a new section usually being reset every week or two). The General Manager Kevin knows all the regulars by name and will be the first to greet you at the door and make sure you have the best experience time and time again. I have been a member for over 2 years now, and Ive brought numerous friends and family members to CRG Watertown to experience climbing for the 1st or 100th time in the best spot around. I high recommend this and all other CRG locations!
Great gym, community, route setting. Routes are maybe half a grade easier than Cambridge. Good amiunt of boyldering area, and tons of lead and top rope too. Always see kids/families.
Absolutely fantastic climbing gym. Ive been a member for 6 months, and we love it. Great top rope routes, plenty of bouldering and lead climbing. Theres a great variety of difficulty levels for everyone, and routes get changed quite often so theres always new ones to try. The staff is super welcoming and helpful!
Great bouldering, a fantastic team, and friendly climbers. They usually have a 5.4 available if youre new to top roping, and upstairs there are shorter, easier climbs too.As a bonus, its wheelchair accessible, and theres an accessible climbing club that meets on Fridays - as someone with joint stability issues, I love knowing that I can meet with them and get advice on how to handle climbing.
I bring my kids (6 to 12) to climb and play. They love it!
My first time rock climbing and I really enjoyed my experience here. Great and super helpful staff. I was glad to see a wide range of climbs for beginners. Will definitely be back soon!
Words cant describe how amazing this place is! The community is so rich with life. I always feel so welcomed and I hope whomever reads this doesnt think twice about stopping by. Special shout out to the amazing staff that Central Rock hires. To list a few:Special thank you to Alec for finding my wallet the other day. Hes always willing to help out and does an awesome job DJing. Youll never lose anything at Central Rock thanks to him.Special shoutout to Nate for always taking to the time to help improve my climbing. His instruction has helped me conquer some amazing boulder routes.Lastly, a special shout out to Taylor for always cheering us on whenever shes around.Looking forward to another eventful day at the gym!
Great large climbing gym in the boston area
This space offers a robust selection of active pursuits made all the more engaging with their talented and supportive staff.
The atmosphere at CRG is great. I really enjoy the climbing. They have routes for all skill levels! I am looking forwarding to begin lead climb this winter!
Elizabeth (Ellie) Tang is one of the most helpful staff in the gym. Not only is she the president of Team CRG, she enjoys helping others, and coloring. When you visit, you’ll be sure to see her welcoming, oversized smile.
The best climbing gym in the area. My only complaint is the termination/freezing policy. As a student who has to pay for his own school I can’t afford to keep my membership during the school year. The $100 reinstatement fee is ridiculous, as is the $10 per month your account is frozen. Something as simple as changing someones OU should not cost so much. If it wasn’t waived (after contacting staff via email) I would not be going here still. That being said if you don’t have this problem it’s a great gym with challenging boulders, plenty of hangboards and practice holds upstairs. The plethora of classes and equipment in the back gym ensure I never get bored here.
The place is really big. All equipment are in good shape and everything is clean. I love work out at this gym. and the membership is very fair.
Welcoming, helpful staff. We were new to climbing, and Kevin, the manager, was very helpful in helping to pick out equipment. I never felt like I was being sold to. He really gave straight forward advice on reasonably priced equipment. One of my favorite things is that the staff really knows the place inside and out. They can always answer questions about routes and are always ready to talk about recent climbs. Its nice to get to know the people that work there through climbing. Keep up the good work!
Hands down the perfect gym! I recently went there for the first time without any prior experience and a wonderful gal Jen helped me through every step of the way! I would definitely recommend to anyone no matter the ability level!
This gym is soooo awesome!! Its huge!! Tons of top ropes to choose from upstairs and downstairs. Theres a massive lead wall, and they also have a ton of bouldering. Theres even a bouldering ramp! Super helpful and friendly staff too.
Wow! I wish this was my local gym. They have many many routes. The route rating are a little soft v3’s are like my gyms v1 to v2. Lots of people but you can find some spot the is free.
The largest central rock, with top roping/lead climbing walls and a wide selection of bouldering routes. Updated frequently enough to always have new challenges, this gym is the best for climbers who want all the experiences in one spot.
Awesome group of people! Very welcoming and instantly felt at home. Coaches are very accommodating, too.
Like many gyms, could use better ventilation; it could also use a real shower in the mens dressing room. Less grungy than Metro Rocks a somewhat more upscale looking. The bouldering gym and yoga studio are nice fringe benefits. The requirement to pay for a one time membership fee, that also requires a 10$/month fee to be kept active if one doesnt climb for a month, reveals a focus on profitability, which I find demeaning....but so spins the Earth.
I love Central Rock! 5 years ago we happened to be living on Oakland St when we noticed this huge warehouse was being built a few hundred yards away. Little did we know that they were building one of the best indoor gyms in the northeast (and honestly, having been around to some more while living in Colorado, maybe the US)! Its the best! We signed up the first day we were allowed to, so we might have been some of the very first CRG Watertown customers. It was very cool to see them go from a brand new gym to a very popular and successful one over the two years we were climbing consistently at CRG. We moved to Colorado in 2014 from Watertown and the thing we might have missed the most was CRG. What I remember most is that they were constantly improving things - the climbing layout, the gym, the classes, everything. There seemed to be a real ongoing commitment to imrproving the gym that was definitely felt by us climbing there almost every day.
What a great place! The belay staff were really patient with my nervous 5 year old, and encouraged him on whatever wall he was willing try. We will definitely be back!
It’s a fanatastic gym with nice holds and great staff. Ellie and Jen are amazing workers and always manage to be patient and help everyone out.
Ive climbed at a lot of gyms in New England, and I would say CRG Watertown is the one Ive fit in at the best. Bouldering and top roping have a good mix of problems at a wide range of ratings, and youll see a mix of first-time climbers and sponsored professionals on a regular basis. Staff is well trained and friendly. They keep the gym as clean and presentable as you can practically do with a climbing gym as well. Have not taken any lessons here, but I get the impression they are more regulated and refined than what you might get at some of the smaller climbing gyms.
CRG is one of my favorite places. Its amazing to have membership access to all of the CRG locations and to be able to work on the variety of bouldering, top rope, and lead problems across each gym. The staff are super friendly as well!
We love having practice here. The gym is very well kept and the people are all very freindly
Central Rock Gym is a lovely environment for families and individuals alike. Their workout equipment is well taken care of and their staff are very helpful for beginner climbers
I absolutely love this gym! The people here are so kind and willing to help, from beginners to world competitors this gym has a range of athletes who are all open to helping bring new climbers into the community.
Very airy and sunny. Great staff.
Awesome place!! Best Ive seen. Huge square footage, levels to what looks like very difficult. Great friendly staff
Crg Watertown is my favorite gym! The climbs are so fun, and the staff are helpful. Especially Ellie, she helps with any questions you have, and is so nice and funny!
Great staff great place. Not much in 1 hour
Central Rock Gym Watertown is a great place to meet up with friends and climb. There is a variety of well-set problems to work through all over the gym. Some of the best climbing in the Boston Area
I love this gym! Everyone should try going here, it’s great for the whole family!!
Nice sized gym for prices that are fairly reasonable. If youre not an avid climber, the staff seems to be welcoming and people are friendly to help you get off your feet. If youre an experienced climber, this gym has lots of wall space; tall, overhung lead walls; ample top rope and bouldering; and cardio and strength fitness equipment. Membership includes access to several other gyms in the area and numerous fitness classes (yoga, spin, core...). The setting of routes is pretty good and done without frequency, on a schedule. The place is kept pretty clean and they always seem to be making improvements. Ive been to a lot of climbing gyms around the country and these gyms are some of the best all around.
This has been my climbing gym since they opened in 2013 or 2014. The monthly rate has competitive with other gyms in the area and getting access to all the CRG gyms with one membership is nice but a feature I dont use much. The facility itself is huge! The lead wall is just enormous. Routes change every three to four months so theres always something new to try. Routes are evenly spread from beginner to advanced (5.6 to 5.13). The most advanced routes are on the lead wall. The staff have always been friendly. Classes for belaying and lead climbing are thorough.
I love this gym! So many rope climbs and boulders means that there is something here for everyone!
It is well maintained and a present atmosphere and has lots of great walls plus a weights room and treadmills.
Awesome gym! Great atmosphere! So much room and a very diverse variety of routes to climb! I feel like you could climb there every day for a month and still not begin to tough all the routes! They have longer routes and shorter routes, harder routes and easier routes! Perfect for everyone from the casual boulderer to the hardcore lead climber!
CRG is wonderful. I was introduced to the gym through friends, and loved going and meeting the same regulars every week. The CRG community is half the reason I continued to rock climb regularly - theyre awesome. The facility is great as well, and the staff are all very friendly and helpful. Most of my friends boulder and Im more of a top roper, so Ive often had staff partners for top roping - each and every one of them have been great. I also had a bit of a financial issue with the gym during my cancellation (most likely self-inflicted), and the staff members I talked to throughout the process were kind, professional, and very helpful. Shoutout to Megan especially for her help over the phone - thank you! I greatly appreciate it, and if I ever return to Boston the first membership Im resigning up for is with CRG!
Great atmosphere! Had so much fun learning from Jenny B!
I love coming to Central Rock Gym, and the most amazing thing about it, is the comfort and the friendliness that the staff offers.
Filthy facility. Staff were not incredibly friendly or informative. no self belayers, ropes are old and rental equpment does not smell sanitary. Highly dissatisfied. Go to Rock Spot i stead
Very welcoming and kid-friendly, a great place for parties or casual climbing!
One of the biggest climbing gyms in the states and a start of the art facility. Love how there arent any auto belays. Definitely a great gym for the price.
I love this gym. I was at Work out World for a few months and it just seemed like work. At Central Rock, I can work out and actually enjoy doing it. They have cardio and strength equipment and all sorts of classes. I love coming here almost every day. The staff is awesome and the facility is massive! There are so many routes. Im always thinking about it when Im not there. Im so happy this place opened up right down the street from my house. Good bye, Work out World!
Good music selection/variety. Routes are changed up frequently enough to go 2-3 days per week and not run out, at least for a beginner like me. Friendly staff
Great gym and community, fitness classes are offered frequently and are great as well!
I love this place. Ive been coming a couple time a week for the last year and I cant seem to get here enough!they have a great selection of walls for everyone from advanced climbers and complete beginners and I love the way the color coordinate routes.
Great gym for climbing - bouldering, top rope, lead wall. Have some good classes as extra . But membership fee is quite high and they have only one shower.
Super friendly staff, clean and fun facilities. I love how they set routes with same-color holds (no tape) and dont belittle you on your belay test. If only it were closer to Cambridge!
Awesome climbing gym - I could live here, love it!
What a great place! Everyone is so friendly and theres such a great vibe here. I took an intro to belay class and joined right after since the gym was so great. Unlimited yoga 6 days a week plus all you can climb and free weights/light cardio available - its a steal for $79/month. I was worried about finding a climbing partner since no one I know climbs but I joined a single climber sign up sheet and already have 3 climbing partners within 24 hours! Looking forward to staying here a long time.
Initially, Id been very disappointed and upset as a CRG employee had asked me to leave because I used a Bowline knot to tie in (on stiff, chalk-laden top ropes, my RA prevents me from undoing 8 knots). But after my scathing review here, manager Kevin reached out to me and after a couple of demonstrations of the challenges I faced, we found a compromise (8 with a loop clipped on a biner, such that my partner can then undo the knot once I unclip).MOREOVER, Kevin reached out to the owners (and legal/insurance team) and is working on leading the charge amongst rock gyms to get the Bowline accepted and taught.I have been extremely POSITIVELY IMPRESSED BY KEVINs dedication to finding the truly BEST techniques for members of the Staff and gym goers. Thats as close to climbing crags as gym climbing can get, cause after all its all about problem solving (my friend Javiers quote).Climb safe, i.e. pay attention (hence, drop the Grigri ;-)
Every Central Rock Gym facility has always had everything necessary for a successful climb. This one is no different, check out the second floor (which you can climb to from the first if you are bouldering in the right spot)!
Great first time there with 3 boys. We all had fun bouldering!
Great gym. Staff is helpful
Gym has clean bathrooms and floors. Does a great belay and climber safety check. Thats the extent though. The walls are dirty, the holds are slimy from grease and chalk. Everything needs a good cleaning when it comes to the wall. The HVAC is under sized as it smells something terrible.
Awesome staff, really theyre the best. Awesome non pretentious climbers. Im in love
I love this gym!! The staff and climbs are amazing!!
Very good rock gym
Totally in love with this place! A LOT of fun routes, great facilities, great atmosphere, cant say enough good things about it! Definitely planning on spending lots and lots of evenings climbing here.
Great combination of bouldering, toproping, and lead climbing. The setting here is pretty creative and fun.
All you need to do is see this facility and you will be sold. When you first walk in you dont really grasp how large this gym is until you see the enormous lead wall and the upstairs climbing area. I would say this is the best climbing gym I have ever been to because of the mere size and layout. I personally go to the Cambridge location when I am climbing on my own and I come to Watertown when I climb with friends. At both locations they are constantly changing the routes throughout the week. I highly recommend Watertown for climbers both new and experienced.
The kids I Nanny loved the April vacation camp, from my perspective it was well run, and the staff is friendly =)
Great activity
Really amazing space, with many different top-rope and bouldering routes. Wish I lived closer so I could take advantage of this CRG location more often!
A great place to climb. Routes are updated regularly and the staff are very kind and helpful.
Great place, super friendly staff. Love it.
The Watertown Central Rock is great. The walls are tall, the routes are VERY clearly marked, and there is a lot of space to climb. Im very excited to have the gym there.
This place is fantastic! Yesterday was my very first time climbing. The staff is amazing and the walls and variety of routes is impressive. Theres something here for everyone!
By far the best climbing gym in the area! Great steep lead wall, lots of top rope routes and bouldering!
Dozens of bouldering and top roping routes of varying degrees of ability. Includes a workout studio / weightlifting area.Somewhat expensive to go to on an ad-hoc basis, but reasonably affordable monthly membership.
Clean, well lit, good setting, nice holds, great training section. Must go if youre in the area. Look no further.
The good stuff: Large, with nice high ceilings for long routes. Big steeply overhung lead climb area. Long training roof for a good roof workout. Decent weight room too. The bad stuff: Route grades are ridiculously inconsistent - the other day my partner and I both failed on a 5.9 and a 5.10, then we breezed up a 5.11. No autobelays, no cracks. Overall, its not perfect, but its the best TR & lead climbing gym that Ive found near Boston.
The better and more cost effective rock gym around Boston
Friendly atmosphere, and a good range of features and grades. Somewhat in-between the just-back-from-the-crag grunge of Metrorock (dont get me wrong - I love that feel) and the only-climb-on-plastic hipster vibe of Brooklyn Boulders, Central Rock feels like a place that casual climbers can feel totally at home in, but has plenty to offer the hard-core rock jocks. All of the tracked routes are based on the color of the holds rather than tape, and the grades feel about standard for New England, though they stick with +/- grades even past 5.9 (no letter grades). I havent gone often enough to have a sense for how often they change the routes, but the routes are fun and a good mix of thought-provoking and strength-challenging. I also havent done any bouldering or leading, but theyve got plenty of dedicated space for both.I have a yearly membership at Metrorock, but Ill still pay for Central Rock every now and again for the variety and change of pace, and its well worth it. If you live nearby or dont have a strong allegiance to MR, you could do far worse.
This gym is awesome! Definitely the best in the Boston area.
Great climbing gym!
Its so good you should climb somewhere else :-)
Very nice and clean climbing gym. Friendly staff, and even a sauna!
Out of all of the gyms in the greater Boston area CRG Watertown is by far my favorite. Its the newest one so it remains the cleanest, and it has a very open atmosphere. As far as the climbing goes the setting is generally great, but its exceptional on the massive overhung lead wall that sports about 15 routes (maybe more?). Top roping and bouldering are both high quality here, but nothing extraordinary. One drawback of CRG is the lack of featured lead climbing, such as arches, ceilings, etc. with the exception of the large overhung wall. They do have a cool bouldering ramp in the back thats perfect for practicing extremely overhung routes though. The staff here are friendly and the manager is almost always around to help out and answer questions.
Awesome range of top-rope and bouldering options, huge space.
Excellent gym. great facility too
Flagship climbing facility. Havent seen one better yet.
Best gym in MA by far and Ive been to them all!
Great place. Great trails, good equipment, cool people
Very nice and clean place, great place to workout .
This gym is soooo awesome
