This was a unique location and a first time visit to this location, although the house was closed due to COVID, the Gardens were well maintained and a very pretty tour to walk around. There was a wedding there before we started a tour and looked like a great place to get some nice photos.
I am a wedding photographer specializing in film photography. Myself and another photographer hosted our workshop, The Film Theory Workshop at the Tutor Place and it was the perfect place for our small get together! They were accommodating with helping us navigate the ins and outs of making our workshop come to life, and the backdrop was perfect for multiple shoot locations. The historic grounds in Washington, D.c. tell an incredible story and was the perfect fit for our workshop! Hope to shoot wedding there one day! ps. We were so excited when our workshop ended up going on to be featured in Style Me Pretty! Big thanks to Tudor Place! Images by Natalie Jayne Photography
Nice place to visit. The house is a bit over set-up, and feels more like a museum than a conserved house from the 1800s.The entrance fee is $10 per person, and it includes a guided tour of the house and a garden map.Since the place is built like a museum, it should be ran like one and offer the option to walk around by yourself. Especially since they have a log book in each room about all the items in the room, which while on the tour you cant really study. The garden and outdoors are beautiful and should be seen, the inside is nice but not worth the time or money.
Heaven in Georgetown. Perfect garden for kids to run around.
Beautiful in the spring time with the flowers in full bloom. Gardens can be visited for just $3. There are plenty of benches to sit and admire the view of this little idyll in the middle of Georgetown.
Excellent tour. The docent clearly appreciates the history of the home and its former owners. The garden in December is mostly boxwood with a few snowdrops blooming.
After living in the DC area for over 30 years, I recently discovered this hidden gem tucked away in Georgetown. With a beautiful estate house built in 1805 and magical gardens with fountains, I would highly recommend a visit to both locals and tourists!
Great walk through of one of D.C. finest families and relatives of our first President, George Washington. Excellent staff, friendly and very knowledgeable.
Nice place to visit when youre in Georgetown. Excellent guided tour of the house. Lots of interesting history. Recommended.
Great place to spend with your family.
Beautiful place, management is very friendly and helpful.
Neat history. This home belonged to a dependent of George Washington. Kept in the family for many years the house has a feel of a big mansion, but seems a little more humble compared to others. The grounds and gardens are free to walk around. Theyre not all that big, but are well maintained and pretty. Guided yours are offered. No air conditioning. The guide was great, he was extremely knowledgeable about the family history, and knew all the artifacts and house history.
We took a tour of Tudor Place around the holidays and it was really nice. The tour was really interesting and the home is beautiful. It’s especially nice to see it decorated for Christmas.
Beautiful mansion and garden. Went during the end of summer. There were still lots of flowers but i can only imagine what spring would look like. They even have fruit trees which was neat. Well maintained. Dream wedding destination for sure! Make sure you bring cameras and dress up. There is a fee to get in though.
A beautiful English garden tucked away in the bustle of Washington DC. The staff is lovely and the experience is a must! You feel like youre transported to Europe!
Beautiful gardens
I had seen the house years ago but never had a chance to see the gardens and grounds. The plantings that are literally hundreds of years old are lovely and vital. I found a cool respite on a hot summer day.
Nice walk from the metro and a house and grounds worth seeing and hearing about its history.
Lovely park in mid of dc. Make it a point to visit this gem of a place if you are in town
A quiet and beautiful museum nestled in the more slow-paced parts of Georgetown. Very knowledgeable and helpful staff. Overall a wonderful experience.
Such a good one hour tour! Amy was very knowledgeable and invited us to ask questions on everything which made the tour a bit longer!10$/adultWorth visiting the gardens and explore smokehouse, carriage house, etc.If in Georgetown and youve seen the main attractions, this is a different options. Be mindful that the tour may be difficult for young children and elderly for lack of sitting and moving space while visiting historic rooms.
Beautiful home and grounds, very informative tour.
This is a beautiful house with many historic artifacts, especially ones belong to George and Martha Washington. I highly recommend a visit for anyone visiting the DC area.
I absolutely loved touring this place! Im normally not big into guided tours, which is the only way to see the house. But the tour guide was super informative and kept things moving along. The inside is stunning. Well worth a visit!
The house certainly surpasses the gardens in worth as an attraction. House tours are given on the hour and last about an hour. The ends of the house were built in the late 18th century. The center of the structure was built in the 1800s. The house remained in the same family until only a few decades ago. Many of the objects and furniture in the house have great historical significance; some were owned by George Washington. Our guide for the house tour (Elizabeth) was excellent. If you like early American history you will greatly appreciate this historical home. We visited on a Wednesday morning and there was ample street parking, but there was a 2 hour limit.
Obscure connection to George Washington. But great example and preservation.
Fantastic tour with fascinating history of Martha Washingtons descendants! Beautiful home worth the price of admission to see!
Great tour of the house. Very enjoyable.
Caitlin gave us an excellent house tour. She was both interesting and informative.
Great tour is offered at an affordable price. Beautiful self guided tour of garden.
A neat little garden
It was not for me. Im glad it exists and the people were nice. Its very awesome that people care enough to volunteer their time to give tours.
Awesome place to visit. Had a wonderful time!! Cannot say enough wonderful things.
Quiet with a beautiful story. Visit the shop and take the tour. A little golden nugget in busy DC.
Nice garden, but too expensive for a small place like this.
The tour guide was good and the home and garden were awesome.
Nice setup in the heart of DCs Georgetown. Was there as an invitee to a wedding ceremony. The multitude of shade trees offer a good respite in the middle of a sunny day in early summer. Signage good improve a bit, especially for the restrooms. Must hope for a lucky parking spot, as only on-street parking is available.
Good story. The lady from the tour is great. You have to pay and no photos on the inside
A place of historical significance offering guided tours of the property or self guided garden tours for very reasonable rates. Recommended to anyone in the area.
Really worth the visit.
I was short of time so I paid for the self-guided garden tour ($3). Nice quiet place, very few people visiting when they opened at 10. They have a nice souvenir shop but dont have any local art or crafts. I did buy a beautiful flour sack towel by Alices Cottage at $9. I thought the place was bigger, but the garden is quite small. You can look around in a very short period of time. However, I got really good pics.
If you love history or architecture, add the Tudor Place to your DC itinerary. Heres why:1) History: As one of the only historic mansions in the USA continuously owned by the same family, theres much to learn from it. The land where the house is built was purchased using the wedding gift money from George and Martha Washington by Marthas granddaughter, Martha Parke Custis. Because of the Washington connection, many objects inside come straight from Mt. Vernon, including, randomly, a desk from Francis Scott Key. Some items date back to 1660!2) Space: Its a beautiful home with two floors, a gorgeous garden (just not in the winter), a garage, and a few other spaces on the property. The rooms are fascinating, especially seeing how they evolved as time went by. The guided tour will point these out throughout the main space. If you love history and architecture, the small price to pay for a tour is definitely worth it. If youre not into these things or have small kids, you may not enjoy it as much as others. Still, if you want off-the-National-Mall museums, this is a great spot!
Historical homes that have been continuously occupied since they were built, are reasonably rare and I appreciate this for that alone if nothing else. All the gardens are in arguably sad repair, if with a sign that indicates there will be some renovation in the near future, the interior of the house is perfect, kept almost exactly the way it was left when the last residents lived there. The docent was both well-spoken and incredibly knowledgeable, with ready answers for most of my questions despite the fact I have been known to inquire about very obscure things. The tour occupies the full amount of time, and feels neither too slow nor rushed, covering the entire house in about an hour. I look forward to returning to the house when they have renovated the gift shop to turn it back into the library.
Vert well done. Alot of history. I would go again!
Great afternoon exploring the gardens. House tour was very informative. Took advantage of dollar admission in February, but cant wait to return in the spring!
Extremely informative and interesting cultural visit at the heart of Georgetown
We were disappointed to find out the tour we wanted was sold out. There was nothing on the website indicating you should reserve ahead of time, nor did anyone tell us that when we checked in. So we never actually got to see inside the house. We walked around the garden, many flowers were dead (but it is September!).
Amazing. But only for those who understand garden rooms.
Gorgeous historical home and gardens. Its well worth a visit just to sit and spend the day along the flowers.
It was nice
An interesting slice of American history, great decent and gorgeous garden.
Beautiful!! Was here for a friends wedding they were so accommodating and nice
Great house tour! Very interesting artifacts that are original to the family and even some pieces from George Washington! While waiting for your tour to start, I definitely recommend doing the self guided grounds tour (but bring some bug spray!).
I took advantage of the $1 tour in Feb and I have to say it was more than worth it! The docent who gave us the tour was wonderfully knowledgeable about its history. She also knew the history behind every artifact in the room. It was an hour long tour, but we took an extra 15 minutes with questions and photos through the tour (thankfully a slow day, so it was possible). I didnt even know how the time had passed. (Im not even a hardcore history buff btw)For those interested, the house belonged to Thomas Peter and Martha Parke Custis (granddaughter of Martha Washington & [step granddaughter of] George Washington). That in itself makes the house interesting. The stories of these folks enlivens the history books a little and gives insight into the lives during that period. Also, if you have been to Mount Vernon (George Washingtons estate), youll find that there are a few items from there that are now at the Tudor placeOnce you finish the tour inside, you are allowed to peruse the outdoor gardens at your leisure and look at the different flora for your enjoyment.
Beautiful garden to stroll through and enjoy the varied flower sections and trees.
It is beautiful if you are into historic places. The tours are cheap and very informative. I liked to spend time in the garden and just relax on a nice weather day. Parking is tough but easily accessible via public transportation (bus stop right across the street )
Absolutely stunning gardens! Perfect for weddings and special occasions.
My wife and I had a great time touring Tudor place. Fran was a fantastic guide who is not only extremely knowledgeable but also very passionate about conveying the legacy the family wanted to preserve by creating this estate. Even though the website says the tour lasts 45 minutes, it does last longer (went over an hour). We were both interested in asking more questions when it was over and since it was her last tour of the day, she accommodated us and took us through again. If you are interested in history, this is a must do tour! Thank you Fran!
The employees were very informative and we loved our tour!
Interesting. Neat place.
Nice garden, good museum, knowledgeable guides. A bit rushed, not enough time to look at everything on tour but also nearly impossible to remember who is who when family generations being referred to, esp as they all have the same name, so a hand out or family tree would be useful!
A lovely house and gardens, with lots of history, and ties to George and Martha Washington. They offer tours, and host special events and lectures.
Beautiful place with an I intriguing history. Nice gardens.
This was a little gem in Georgetown. We went in the winter, during their dollar days special, but will definitely return to pay full price and see the gardens in full bloom. The staff are knowledgeable and excited about the buildings history and the process of curating the building. While there isnt one theme to the house (various rooms are staged to various time periods), the house has the feel of a familys genealogy. You walk through rooms like you walk through the generations of the descendants of George and Martha Washingtons family. This genealogy gives the odd juxtapositions of eras, where one moves from a room in the federalist style to a room in late Victorian, a surprisingly delightful cohesion as the engaging curator tells the story of a mother and her children who bridge the two eras.Definitely worth checking out!
Visited one afternoon this week while on vacation. House tour was a little disappointing. The docent asked about our interests in the house and we told her we were interested in the architecture and furniture. Sadly, she didnt include much info on those two topics during the tour. The gardens were not well maintained. In late May, several things could be in bloom but we didnt see many spring blooms had been planted. The things that were blooming needed to be deadheaded. Disappointing.
Beautiful house and garden. Plenty of antiques, including some owned by George Washington. Informative guided tour.
Interesting historical mansion and grounds. Family related to George Washington .
This is an amazing and beautiful place to see and walk around, I like old tutor and Victorian houses .Q st neighborhood is so well kept .
A Georgetown walking-tour must see. Well worth the price of admission.Beautifully decorated in largely period (and in many cases) actual artifacts.Building and grounds are wonderful.
Interesting place. Lots of history. Worth seeing.
Very interesting tour. Small but beauriful garden
A hidden gem in DC. I had never heard of Tudor Place before, but stumbled upon it while looking for places to propose to my girlfriend. When I inquired about the proposal and having a photographer on the grounds to capture the event, they were incredibly receptive & accommodating. They allowed my photographer to come in early and set up flowers, plus the events coordinator walked the area to ensure no other visitors were near us for the actual proposal. I am very happy I chose this location to hold such a memorable event. The garden is intimate and beautiful, while the mansion is a wonderful example of traditional American architecture, designed by the same architect as the US Capital building. I cant wait to go back.
Well worth a few hours of your time!Spent a wonderful winter afternoon on a docent led tour of the property. It was the story of the people who made it their home that really made the place come alive. A wonderful guide, who not only knew the history of the house and most of its artifacts, she explained the connection between the families who lived here and other prominent historical homes in the area.Despite the development of Georgetown into one of the most well known of DCs residential neighborhoods; the view from the rear garden is still stunning and somewhat untouched. When the weather is better and the gardens are bloom, this could be a great segway from the M street drag! Combine it with a tour of Dumbarton Oaks, its incredible pre-Columbia art museum and gardens!Several free docent tours are offered in the winter. Recommended.
Beautiful location for weddings, photo shoots, special occasions right in DC!!!
Very interesting place with an amazing history
Enjoyed my visit!
Great experience in exploring this beautiful garden.
After 4 pm they close. Beautiful garden anyway, peacefully looking, but the street noise is louder than ideal. Lots of sign explain what can be seen. The house itself was already closed when I arrived. From the outside it looks historical.
Beautiful gardens for the wedding. There are very informative tour guides there.
They only do guided tours of the house, but they very informative. The house is in beautiful condition, but not fully air conditioned. They have fans for use during your visit, which are very nice. Its a great way to see DCs history that is off the beaten path.
Amazing place for a private event!
Fascinating look into an historic house with some extraordinarily time-frozen rooms.
Very Interesting house and garden. The guided tour of the mansion was fun, as well.
Peaceful
Walking to this place was the best part through Georgetown.
Wonderful garden tour and an excellent example of an Art Deco Era garden with Late Colonial remnants. Will return for house tour. Enjoyed the gift shop. The best way to experience Tudor Place is to walk to it from M Street and experience Georgetown by foot - every nook and cranny.
Magnificent historical home we happened upon. The tour was well worth the money and the grounds are beautiful.
Not a bug garden, but beautiful, cosy, quiet and free of charge
Interesting house with an even more interesting history! Especially since it is related to the Washington family! However the lady who does the guided tour is too explicit and becomes too long and too tiring...
The guided tour was really interesting. The house has an amazing amount of objects and furniture from several periods. The guide narrates the familys history and makes you understand how wealthy people used to live. It really worth stopping by.
Beautiful garden and friendly staff
Wonderful old house with knowledgeable staff giving informative tours.
You can walk through the garden almost anytime of the year except Mondays and in February.
