Art Museum of the Americas (AMA), located in Washington, D.C., is the first art museum in the United States primarily devoted to exhibiting works of modern and contemporary art from Latin America and the Caribbean. The museum was formally established in 1976 by the Organization of American States (OAS) as the Museum of Modern Art of Latin America. Artists represented in the AMAs permanent collection include Carlos Cruz-Diez, Candido Portinari, Pedro Figari, Fernando de Szyszlo, Amelia Peláez, and Alejandro Obregón.The art collection of the OAS was initiated under the organizations Visual Arts Unit, beginning with the first donated artwork by the Brazilian neo-realist artist Portinari, in 1949. In the following decade the Permanent Council of the OAS determined to establish an acquisitions fund, in order to build up a permanent collection of artworks by significant contemporary artists from the member states of the OAS. A number of works were also purchased from or donated directly by artists, after the temporary exhibitions periodically held at the OAS gallery. The Art Museum of the Americas itself was established in 1976 by OAS Permanent Council resolution, on the occasion of the United States Bicentennial. The museum opened in what was formerly the official residence of the OAS Secretary General, a Spanish Colonial-style structure designed in 1912 by the architect Paul Cret.Initially the permanent collection held some 250 artworks, expanding over the next quarter-century to over 2000 items of painting, sculpture, installations, photography, and drawing, from the early 20th century and onwards. In addition to its permanent collection of mainly Caribbean and Latin American art, AMA hosts temporary and special exhibitions from across the region, and provides educational seminars and lectures from invited speakers. The Art Museum of the Americas has also expanded its programs to include evening events, such as Art After Dark, with cutting edge music, video, performance, and installation art.
Small, free museum. The art was well curated. The top floor is from the collection. The second floor is for special exhibits. The front desk person seemed like he wanted to go home. I had a hard time seeing it because of all of the tour buses parked in the area. Bathrooms on the top floor. No gift shop.
Beautiful & often overlooked art museum! It’s not very big and parking nearby can be difficult so metro + walk or bike if you aren’t visiting at an off hour.Pro tip: download UniGuide from the App Store to have a self guided experience and not have to play around with getting that set up when you’re there.
Such a beautiful, unique, authentic Spanish-lovers artistically wonderful center. Peaceful and quiet interiors right near all the National Mall memorials. Great photo and art exhibit from Spanish Civil War and exhibits depicting all the strife of 1960s-70s Central and South America. Write ups next to the art are super informative. The physical space is gorgeous - open, airy, very beautiful courtyard and architecture. Very friendly reception and well kept grounds. Stop by for a history art lesson!
I really liked the Art Museum but wish there was more to it. It would have been great to have a couple more floors of art.
Interesting museum with a nice display of central and south american paintings and artifacts.
Very interesting art that shows alot of life and culture in Latin and Caribbean history
I love that this exists. I had some time to kill and I was in the area. I was a little underwhelmed because I expected it to be much grander, but what they have is great!
This was my second visit, but months apart. It appeared the previous art on display had been rotated out. Which keeps you interested in returning. The museum not only exhibits Latin America art, but also the Americas to include Canada, which I observed first hand on my initial visit. Small, two levels, no long lines, off the beaten path, all positives for me.
Only a individual who can see past an the initial image, can see the difference in art and others trying to steal an image.
Very good small museum. We recently saw the Carlos Páez Vilaró exhibit. It was really good. We were the only ones there.
It was a little small. I was really happy to see some pieces by painters and artists not commonly in other museums around here, but overall it was a bit on the bleak side pallette-wise. The room at the top on the south side was my favorite and the most contemporary overall. Apart from the art itself, dont miss the fountain and benches outside in a gorgeous, quiet garden out back.
Excellent showcase of Latin American artists. Second timw going there and seeing completely diffetetn exhibits. Well chosen contemporary paintings and sculptures. A quick escape into the Latin American art world. Free and takes about 30min-1hr. Def going back!
Great collection of Latin American art, including art from Cuba and Torres Garcia from Uruguay.Donation based.Would recommend either an interested/talkative employee at front desk or an audio guide. Employee was watching videos on her phone the whole time.
Nice little museum next to the mall.
Very small but reasonably impactful, wouldnt go out of my way to go to it.
A small art museum full of art not likely to be seen in American art books and museums. Great special exhibition of photograms.
I love a good museum, but this one is one thats safe to miss in DC:1) Its VERY small. There are only two floors to it and the art isnt the best in DC.2) They take suggested donations, so it does cost unless you want to feel guilty as the museum workers stare you down if you dont pay.Pluses:1) One of the rooms is beautiful with its blue walls and cool architecture.2) The back of the museum is great with a beautiful fountain. It would be a great place to rent for an event!
One of its kind. Never knew the art would be so different. Its a pretty good insight of Art from Americas. worth the visit!
Upon entering the museum the man at the front desk wasn’t very welcoming at all. In fact he assumed I came in to use the bathroom. It came off very rude.I’ve been in DC for a few days and have been looking forward to visiting this museum however I wasn’t very impressed at all. There were maybe 20 pieces on display in a small 2 Floor space. The back room and the grounds weren’t open. Looked like either they were going to set up for an event or it had already happened and just haven’t gotten around to cleaning up.
Through small but wonderful Art work . it is beautiful to the eye. The museum is free. I love it
A quaint little museum off the main path of all other museums.
Some neat artwork
Great place to go to for a good 2 hours. The place is imnaculate inside and the.grounds outside are groomed to perfection. Art work makes you want to go to the ocean and vist all the islands.
Great art, beautiful building. The exhibitions keep changing and keep giving me new reasons to come back and learn more about Latin American and Caribbean art.
It was great! I was in a hurry for another exhibit during a parade but it was very educational.
Great collection! Definitely worth a trip! Free admission but you should donate at the front desk!
Great museum with incredible works of art!

Small collection of arts displayed with a friendly staff giving a free tour. It is nice small and cozy museum.
My statue is in Megiddo and Jerusalem
Very small but nice. It only has a few rooms but its a quiet little respite from all the chaos of the Mall and Smithsonians. The outdoor area and sculptures are nice too.
Very small and cheap arts
Just nice
Small 2 floor museum, we spent about 40 looking at contemporary Latin American art. Suggested donation is $10 per person.
Love is love
Often overlooked. This is a great place to visit in a lunch hour. Free to enter, but $5 donation suggested. Totally worth it, IMHO.
A nice little museum with contemporary works from the Americas. Quick to go through and a nice taste of art you wont see enough of in the other museums in DC.
Nice place to visit.
Beautiful building
Interesting place)
They say its open but when I went there it was locked up.
10/10. Would walk into to use the restroom again.
Interesting pieces on display
Very nice place to sink in for an hour or two
One of the best art-attacks I have ever had
Waited seven min past 10 and its still not open. Days Tuesday through Sunday non federal holiday.
I met John Cena here.
Disappointed. 1 floor of exhibits and not a good representation of the talent throughout the Lesser and Greater Antilles.
I suppose it is ok if like that type of thing.
Cool
