We got lucky and the weather was absolutely perfect. The experience of this easy hike is amazing. We really enjoyed hiking all the way to the point. Beautiful views from both the west and North sides of the island. Highly recommend this easy hike. Recommend walking shoes, but this can be done in sandals or flip flops as well
Kaena Point is a state nature preserve at the western most point of Oahu. There is a breeding colony of Albatross. There are also resident seals. In the winter you can often see whales off the water. There are two access trails:The northern trail is about 3 miles along the coast. This trail is my favorite. The shoreline is interesting with many rugged rocky areas and coves with small swimming beach. You are exposed to the sun all the way but when the trade wind is blowing it is pleasant. The western trail is slightly shorter. The shoreline is very rugged and there are few places to swim. There are lots of tide pools though. The trail does not get the trade wind so it get hot hiking it. Hikers should carry lots of water. The views are better on this side as you see the mountains of Oahu.
Beautiful and almost empty. The far side of the world
Great hike along the shore. Endless scenery. No cover so bring sunscreen. Very nice stroll. Very leveled path. You can trail run on this hike.
I would not consider this area a top priority in the island. Is slightly less impressive than other places along the coastline. Looks like a great snorkeling place only when water is calm enough. You can spot a lot of crabs running and hiding along the lava rocks. Avoid the restrooms if possible they are far from being clean.
2/13/19: Recent storm left the trail really muddy. Started at 820a, got to the reserve by 910a. The Albatross were out. Such a beautiful sight.
Absolutely gorgeous! It is so amazing how untouched and respected the land is. I love that about Oahu.
Seals. Whales. And a good hike. If we there are big puddles to navigate. Trail is an old road so easy to walk and follow. On the way in stay on the road. Do not drive on sand it is very soft.
This is the best place to view a beautiful sigh in the whole island. The waves are calming and there is not a lot of people around. If you come here, you wont be disappointed and trust me the views are breathtaking.
Great hike, not difficult at all. Our 5-year old had no problem.
USE CAUTION!!! Oahu definitely has some great views. Kaena Point is without a doubt one of the best. We were attempting to drive as far up the west side as possible when we came to the end of the road here at Kaena. The water was such an amazing blue, we gave it the name ice blue. The waves were enormous on the day we visited. There was a young woman and a child that had adventured out onto the rocks too far. An abnormally giant wave came and almost swept them away! Beautiful views! Use discretion and be cautious of your surroundings.
Absolutely amazing wildlife refuge at the end of the hike! Be careful about your car at the beginning of the trail, people break into cars all the time. The area is littered with broken glass.
Beautiful...if you get lucky you can see dolphins and seals most of the time.
Nice stroll. Not a difficult walk, very pleasant, but long! Along the trail, there are lots of tide pools to check out. Lots of people off roadbed the trail. Kinda an all day trip by the time you get out there. Make sure you go to the end and see the migrating albatross and humpback whales. It is really a great.
Nice breeze and tide, fun place to pick up some shells.
Beautiful to watch the sunset
Have been to Hawaii several times but have never bothered going beyond Kapolei, until this year. Incredible coastline. A mix of fantastic sandy beaches and rugged rocky outcrops with the mountains as a backdrop. Well worth the effort. It would be a pain to get to without a car.
Great flat hike on an unimproved stone/dirt trail. Bring lots of water it is very hot out there when its not misting. Great views of the coast and mountain. The cliffs are beautiful but a bit treacherous if you get to close.
Beautiful! Shows the raw power of nature in the lava flows that have been shaped by the ocean.
Easy trail along a beautiful coastline. At the end is a place where local albatrosses are nesting, if you look closely you can see the mothers with their chicks.
Wow what a great view! And very peaceful
Theres 2 small blowholes but depending on the waves they can get pretty big. Its around the middle of the trail. Bring water, it gets hot.
In the end of the island, you will find this beautiful place. Dont miss the sunset at this park.
Beautiful place to watch whales, sealife, and the sunset. Bring bugspray and headlight due to the rough road that jeeps are known to drive down if you stay after dark. No incline trail which is nice. Watch children as it does have drop off cliff.
Beautiful secluded view. Dont walk out too far (as we witnessed some people who werent thinking do) because the waves are bigger than you may expect!
Great secluded spot
If youre looking for a hike with a grand finale at the end like a waterfall or something, this is not your hike. This hike is more about the journey and the amazing views of the coastline along the way. It does get hot. Apply and then reapply sunscreen once you reach the end and make sure to bring plenty of water. If it has rained recently, the trail will be muddy, there is almost always another small path around so you dont need to trudge through the mud. You do not need to finish this whole hike for the experience. The experience is the view along the coastline.Getting there: We drove as far as west as we could on the H1 which turns into another road (just stay on the same road, no turns). When youve driven as far as you can go, the road just ends. This is the trailhead to the hike. You can Google Yokohama Beach to get a location. Its a little over 2 miles out from the parking lot, so probably around 5 miles roundtrip.
Beautiful and easy trail, but you need to bring enough water. When you walk near the light house, you will see the cute seals.
Great to see the Laysan Albatrosses! (Shearwater Albatross) Fair hike, 8,4km return trip but well worth it!
Beautiful bird sanctuary with Laysan albatross and Hawaiian monk seal to see. You can see both North and West sides of Oahu from here!
Beautiful photo ops.
Should have a nice watering hole!!
Its a nice walk up to the nature reserve at the point, although it can be tricky in places so decent footware (and balance) is important. If youre lucky, as I was, you might see dolphins, turtles, seals and albatross. The geology of the track is interesting with features like water spouts and rock arches (some look like theyll become stacks soon). Most people walk, run or cycle the path. It is possible to drive some of it but without the right vehicle and skills you will get stranded (as you can see from one of the pictures). Youll need to take plenty of water because it does get warm out there. There are poison traps set in the nature reserve for rodents so keep an eye on the children and any pets you take with you. I was walking the track with a view to fishing but the surf even on an ebbing tide made many spots unfishable. I found safely fishable spots close to the trailhead on the west side of the point.
A very nice hike up to the point. You should do it! Worth the walk. Parking was adequate.
Very nice
Bring water, beautiful walk
Parking lot with trail access. Trail is easy. Multiple accesses to rocky cliffs with tide pools.
Amazing waves hitting the rocks.
Two Hawaiian Monk seal resting at the tidal basin
This is an easy and moderately long hike. The path is flat and lightly rocky for most of the way. As you approach the point from the west side there is maybe a 50 yard section of narrow rocky stairs, and along the whole path there is a sharp drop off so dont look at your phone. You could probably take a mountain bike along this trail. Has great views of crashing waves, cliffs, tidepools, and the mountain. The path is mostly exposed and sunny, but there are shaded points where you could take a break. Pack lots of water. The only bathroom is at the beach park near the west trailhead, so go before you park.Points of interest include a crashed car off a cliff, a spouting hole in the rocks, and the remains of a 19th century railroad. There are two large rock arches by the ocean. At some points you could scramble down the rocks if you wanted to sit by the crashing waves, but it is quite intense and there are no lifeguards, so I would avoid swimming or being anywhere you could be thrown against the rocks. You can dip your toes in the water at the point if there are no seals around, or at the beach park at the trailhead.Remember if you start from the west side, there is no road or trail that cuts through to the north side, so you can go to the point and turn around. If you want to do the whole hike around the point, you could have someone drop you off on one side and drive to meet you later. There is a trail that goes across the mountain which is restricted and requires a permit, and is very challenging.Took our group 3.5 hours to go to the point, hang out, and come back at a leisurely pace, a round trip of around 4 miles.
Beautiful beach, somewhat secluded, I didnt see any seals there but apparently they do hang out there :)
Amazing! Crazy, gorgeous views! Some ofnthe most intense swimming Ive ever done. Great place to watch the sunset too!
Very nice place. Great to take epic pictures
Quite a walk and a bit muddy. Totally worth it though.
Beautiful land!
Love riding here during sunrise!
Went for a stargazing event with the University of Hawaii Society of Physics Students and it was amazing. Definitely worth the drive
This is at Yokohama Bay. The last place before the point. Great place to visit. Locals beach, but many tourists.
Great hike.
End of the line for roads. Really nice beaches out here. Wish I had time to hike to the end of the point.
Awesome beaches and views!!!
Absolutely stunning. So worth the trip.
Blue ocean, pounding waves, and rocky shoreline with green mountains behind it make this place so uniquely beautiful. Awesome!!!
Beautiful spot for an October sunset.
1st its free. 2nd its fun. Heading to the rocks and having the waves soon up and through then in the background, is quite epic.
Beach was nice rough waves and under tow
Located at the western end of Farrington Hwy aboit 6 miles beyond Makaha Beach. Hiking trails, bird sanctuary. Dont leave ANYTHING in your car - break-in are the norm. Usually in upper 80s. Take water, hat, sunscreen, wear closed toed shoes. Sections of the trail have been washed out and you have to climb up the hillside in order to get to Kaena Pt.
Easy trail, great views
Its an OK hike thats relatively easy since its mostly a flat path, but the views are beautiful. I recommend going on a cooler cloudy day since it is a longer hike and can get very hot with no shade. Bring LOTS of water and sunscreen!Beware: someone cut and stole the catalytic converter from our rental car as we were hiking. The parking area is in a high theft area so dont leave valuables behind.
It was the best swim Ive had in months
Amazing place
I go here alotIts where I can loose, find and test myself. Its my retreatIts where I connect with the earth.
Beautiful spot to go stargazing. Make sure the night is clear... take the drive up and park. A lot of parking space. You don’t have to walk far to experience the beautiful Milky Way.
Great place for a easy but beautiful hike. There are 2 trailheads, one south of the point from the west side of the island and one east of the point from the north side of the island. Hiking out to the point is about 2.5 miles from either trailhead. Both routes are mostly flat and not too sandy and not too rocky. Both can be hot and sunny the whole way, so bring lots of water. Make sure you return to the same trailhead where you started, otherwise getting back to you car is a long long Uber ride. I think the Waianae trailhead route is more scenic since the ocean is close to the trail the whole way and there are lot of interesting rock formations and tide pools visible from the trail. Free parking at the trailheads, but no restrooms or water at the trailheads (but you can find water and restrooms at nearby beach parks).
This beach is beautiful but I wouldn’t go in the water. It’s very rocky but a beautiful view
The hike is ugly and boring. There is no shade at all so it is very hot. It is a complete waste of time and energy. Please save yourself the effort and dont go on this hike.
We saw 3 endangered Hawaiian Monk seals lounging looking a lot like rocks at the amazing Ka’ene preserve! Also nesting Albatrosses a few feet from the the trail! Humpback whales close to shore! An easy hike, bring a hat and water and food.
Nice beach. Even has bathrooms and outside shower. You can just chill or hike to the cave. Or do both. Definitely more peaceful then the other sides of the island. Mahalo.
I love the point!
Beautiful, nontouristy beaches
Great escape. Road getting buss up
Its beautiful, but you will need a off road truck to drive to the peninsula tip in the park. The paved road ends and it becomes a significant off-road path. Something with 4wd should be fine on the off-road path
Bring sun block. this trail offers a little bit of a scenery and not much shade. it can flood fairly easily and is not exactly bike friendly. Like all trails people tend to walk their dogs off leash you could do it in a pair of sandals but Id recommend at least a trail shoe. theres plenty of rocks and tree roots. kids would have no problem with this trail if they can handle the mileage its worth it to hang out in the pools at the end.
This hike was brutal but amazing. 2 miles from the start of the parking area, up to where the land slide took out the path. There is no shade and I would highly suggest at least 2 bottles of water, and sunscreen if you go at mid day. The family had a blast and I would recommend it to anyone looking for something scenic and different from waterfall hikes.
Awesome...so awesome
Stunning! Although not the easiest of trails (big puddles of mud and some of the trail gone), there was always a small path that you could take. If youre careful and in good condition, its well worth the trip.We saw nesting albatrosses with a chick and a monk seal. Even without that, the rough coast and occasional blowhole are beautiful.
Beautiful walk along the ocean. Secluded beach at the end. Be careful if going after it rains, as the path can get muddy with giant puddles.
Great hike with some muddy areas to get around. Albatross are not in yet but Monk Seals were sunning themselves on the rocks. Take plenty of water with you on this hike. Great views of the Northern most point of Oahu.
Beautiful views, nice easy walking trail. Many people fishing in the area, relaxing location.
Great hiking !
Beautiful but hot hike, was really cool seeing the albatrosses at the end!
Spot where mostly locals enjoy the sunset. Just be respectful of the place and youll get to see the best sunset on Oahu
Gods beauty right here! It was a high surf day so we just enjoyed the waves crashing.
What a find! Once you get past the surf break it makes for some excellent snorkeling!
One of my favorite hikes on the island. Respect the wildlife by keeping your distance.
Great. Place. To hang. Out with family and friends. Beautiful white sand beaches. Fresh water showers and restrooms available as well.
Beautiful place to watch the sunset on the leeward coast of O’ahu. It is as far as you can go northwest on Farrington Hwy. at the entrance to the US military base. Personally, I believe they deter people from coming on this side of the island using the rationale that it is “dangerous” and “unsafe” to travel through Waianae, but unless you are afraid of poor and homeless people then there is nothing unsafe about traveling here. As a matter of fact, it is rather eye-opening to see how the government pushed all of the native people to this side of the island. It’s always sunny, maybe a bit warmer due to the fact that there is hardly any rainfall, but it’s a beautiful coastline that most people never get to see because of these unnecessary fears of the poor.
Beautiful scenery. Hiking is doable for level one. Just take your time. You might be rewarded with a rainbow.
The shoreline hike is a must! Its fairly easy so get on out there!
Nice little walk and secret sights, long drive tho
Beautiful and way less people to deal with. Not very many public amenities to utilize. Bring your own everything.
Beautiful views but make sure to bring sunscreen and water because there isn’t any shade at all.
Great hike out. The albatross were nesting, waves crashing and a monk seal resting. Worth the hike for sure
I love it here. Beautiful beach
Great hike !
Absolutely gorgeous beaches, good hiking, and off roading. More isolated location, so it is very peaceful (usually).
