I could not say enough great things about this place. First off this is a family friendly, outdoors oriented venue. Plenty of room to explore and avoid crowds while learning a little bit about gas and steam engines and appreciating the volunteers who keep this place running. They have something for everyone. Take the time to visit this place and enjoy the beautiful property.
The Antique Gas and Steam Engine Museum was founded more than 50 years ago to preserve impressive examples of American craftsmanship and ingenuity.Since then, it has amassed an impressive collection of revolutionary power plants and powerful machines, including steam-powered tractors, mining equipment, and vintage Caterpillar dozers. The facility is located on North Santa Fe Avenue just outside Vista and includes nearly 60 acres of exhibits. As you wander the well-marked paths, you’ll find historical and technical information describing the things you’re seeing. Most guests stick around for an hour or two before heading off to other attractions.
Loved coming here as a kid. and now as an adult. Brought my son like my dad brought me, and his had brought him. Great exhibits and cool tractors and engines. Great model train exhibit too.
I get bored to death in art museums. If you agree with the previous statement, save your admission fare and just take selfies in front of the lamps. Its fun and silly. Make sure you bring s selfie stick so the lamps are actually in the photo. Then pray that you didnt pay much to park, and on your way you go.
A lot of room to explore, many fantastic antique machinery and themed buildings with antiques. They have great events for perusing booths
Got to see a 1920 hay bailer, 1940s threshers for wheat. Just best place. Much history
Full of history with working machines and blacksmith classes I cant wait to take a class!
Really enjoyed my visit. Sort of an amusement park for people who enjoy steam power, farm machinery, trains, clocks, blacksmithing, weaving, good food, and regional history. There are some lovely, monstrous machines working - great examples of transparent technology, where you can look at something and figure it out. Parade of heavy equipment and tractors. So many steam engines working. Classes in smiting and textiles. Really great event. There was also a mini Makers fair that weekend which was a nice addition. I wish Id known about it years ago - my dad would have loved it.
I would have never come to this place except my nephew REALLY wanted to come, and I reluctantly agreed to take him. It was so interesting, There were exhibits about all sorts of ingenious inventions.
So we got a magazine that advertises various halloween events throughout San Diego and we found this one that said trick or treating at this tractor museum. We decided to take our son their to have a little fun. When we got there and found the entrance we paid 10 dollars for entry and made our way inside. We went to the first building we saw and after about 15 mins of waiting we asked the person at the store how the trick or treating worked they explained and my son stood there in is costume and said trick ir treat. The lady after a long pause seemed a bit annoyed and went to the back to get some candy for him. We then proceeded to go around to each store as she had described and every store we went to after the first had no candy and didnt even have an interest in giving candy. The whole event seemed more like a political statement than it was for kids to come and have some fun. It was like a trump rally disguised as a Halloween event. Very few masks and absolutely no social distancing. The tractor operators drove through wearing trump shirts. It was like an alternate reality it was very outdated and not kid friendly at all. Very disorganized and just a complete mess. The people were rude and unfocused on what had brought people their in the first place. Even admitting they were not prepared for candy for the kids. So why advertise that in the first place. It was halloweenish but not in the way you would expect from a Halloween event. It provided scares but not due to anything related to halloween. Just like a trump rally its outdated, confused and out of touch with reality. People covid is a real thing and perhaps at the very least put on a mask so others dont have to worry about catching your virus. And when you advertise trick or treating please make sure your prepared with candy to give the kids no one is interested in whom you are voting for.
My wife and I discovered the Antique Gas & Steam Museum through Maker Faire and fell in love with it!Now were regulars at the auctions and other events. This 40 acre museum is a window into the past, into human ingenuity, and to the ability of human beings to preserve our history (and to keeping it running). Its family friendly, kid friendly, and even leashed dog friendly. The museum has become one of my familys favorite places in San Diego county.
This place is amazing! They have an entire steam plant with about 20 working steam engines. In June they do a antiques parade of a bunch of old equipment. These are the folks that provide the tractors and trailers for the field of flowers event that happens each year.
Great place to visit and ser how life used to be. Friendly staff
Great price and love their clock museum. They gave steam engine, train museum, wool and knitting and so many more things to do. Have classes in metal working which is the main reason we were there. Love the place. Would benefit it their was a place to buy lunch.
Blacksmithing, old farm equipment, trucks, stream engines, and LOTS of them, whats not to like? Would have been better on a Thursday or Saturday when docents were actually working and the various barns with the clock museum, weaving, etc were actually on display Also the young guy that took our money said almost everything was open, and it definitely wasnt, but it was still worth the $27 for 2 seniors, 2 adults, and 3 kids
A huge, sprawling outdoor museum with outbuildings dedicated to specific focuses. Much of your experience is self guided. Friendly people volunteer and work here. We came for the Civil War reenactment and had a wonderful time and plan in returning to enjoy other aspects of this gem in Vista. Parking was easy and a shuttle was available for folks to get from the parking lots to the field. Admission was reasonable. A good learning experience.
Fun place for the family...
This was awesome. My nephew absolutely loved it. Awesome people working and volunteering here.
Great place to stop if you are in the area! They have quite a selection of equipment and cars to look at. The museum is spread out across many acres so bring good walking shoes and water. Very educational museum.
Great place, just do t go on a hot day.
A great place to see lots of old tractors and steam engines. Hundreds of things to see.
Cute place.
Wonderful everyone should go out and visit
There was a rock and mineral show here. It was great fun all weekend and I got some neat stuff like this huge flourite
Great history, very fun and educational
We have been to this museum half a dozen times over the years, with and without kids. The building and exhibits have grown in size and sophistication. The key is to get on line and plan your visit to coincide with an exhibit that matches your interests...the entire place will be devoted to it. Great small town art museum. Fantastic exhibits from local and well known artists. Easy to find, lots of parking options and close to other points of interest.
Its an amazing museum and has something for everyone interested in mechanics and machinery, and are looking for enthusiastic, passionate and interested volunteers to preserve the awesome history of Pacific coast agriculture & construction Machinery and more. I grew up in the area and visited the place since I was 3 and now I volunteer and have found very good friends there. 11 out of 10 would recommend.
Vista, Calif.Location: CBetween Hwy 76 and 78 off of Santa Fe.Both highways are often congested at all times. Its annoying. Vista and adjacent towns have outgrown city planning.Roads/Parking: AFree.Unpaved/rough road when you turn in from Santa Fe Blvd.Cost: A$5.00 you can be a jerk and wander around without paying. The museum is huge with many artifacts, stations, buildings and what appears to be private businesses.Overall: AGreat place to learn about trains, farm equipment, heavy industrial machines from the past.Notable nearbys:Traffic!DT Los Angeles and DT San Diego are about 1.5-2 hrs.Temecula and Pechanga casino is less than one hour.Pala casino is appx 30 min.The general are has nothing but homes.Safe traveling.@cigarcpa.
I took some kids I babysit (7yo boy and 9yo girl) and they absolutely loved the model train building. They spend hours and could have spent even more doing this scavenger hunt the set designers made. Defiantly coming back!
Fun, great historic place.
Annual Summergrass Bluegrass Festival every August is not to be missed!
Incredible resource for the history of looms and weaving. Incredible collection of looms and resource for weaving materials.
If you like old tractors and Blacksmiths, and what not, its an awesome place to go. So very interesting. We enjoyed it very much.
Was at the Bluegrass Festival Summergrass held every August. The museum itself is great. Things are always changing as they built new displays and get old equipment and vehicles running. Great way to spend some hours. Ive always found the volunteers willing to answer questions.
Every year come here for Summergrass Bluegrass Festival.
This museum is incredibly well put together with lots of cool old school farm equipment and tractors. if you have a grandpa that was born before the forties hell love it here. your kids will be sure to find some awesome unusual machinery to dream about. this place was incredible me and my father had a wonderful time here.
AGSEM is fantastic. It provides for a number of novel engineering and creative interests; not just the gas and steam engines but also trains, tractors, blacksmithing, clocks, and general Making. The spring and autumn festivals are an absolute blast... a must-do for anyone into engineering.
Such an unique and charming place. Very relaxing, friendly people. They have interesting mechanical pieces, trucks, train and much more. This place is kid friendly as well.
This place is so cool! Lots of old stuff to check out, tractors driving around, a big grassy arena area for events... Really neat
Much cooler place than it sounds! Besides the museum, there is a lot of space outside, so there are often other events happening, like a rock and gem show or the fiber arts festival. Watch their calendar for all the events.
Dirt roads are in desperate need of repair! D-The special shows they have on the weekends are fun! B+If you ask a question on their web site, they will get back to you.
Great spot, but if there are things you for sure want to see you may want to call ahead. This museum is staffed largely by volunteers. We were there on a Sunday and several exhibits were not open. Still there was a lot to see and we had a great time.
We attended a Boy Scout Camporee here. Its not just a museum but a campground! I saw permanent signage leading to the different camp attractions, such as the performance stage. There is a large area that accommodated several Boy Scout troops, and they only took up about half of the available camping area! Plus, I was surprised to find the ground wasnt as uncomfortable to sleep on as I usually experienced when camping! Not sure why. It was a great camping experience!
Our first time here and already plan on coming back. The displays are fun to look at. We went on a quiet day and want to come back during a special events day. We want to see the parade!
Carefully planned a road trip so that my wife and I could stop and see this museum. In fact we skipped several other alternative stops for it. We get there and what do we find? Closed due to rain!!! ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! If youre gonna be a bunch of pansies, post that youre gonna be that way on your website so you dont waste our time.In the old days, the people who worked on engines were of a sturdier caliber and didnt MELT when they got wet. Obviously, our civilization has declined substantially.
I did a quick visit, I will be going back to explore the site more.
My home away from home. Something for everyone here whether you are a farm person or not. Stream engines weavers spinners model trains tractors blacksmithing antique clocks and more.
This place is so cool, antique farm equipment, trucks and autos. Working Blacksmith shop. Tabletop and outdoor auctions with an eclectic mix of interesting items. Special events abound with demonstrations of antique farm equipment and a parade of these pieces. So much fun and I am lucky enough to live within a mile of this great museum.
This is a great place to view and appreciate our industrial and agricultural past.
Nice open spot used for various occasions. I went to the gem and mineral show here good open place
A great place for farm and tractor history. Fabulous machinery, tractors and buildings all together in an outdoor museum.Where comfortable shoes.
This was a blast had such a great time food was fantastic the tractors were amazing and all the different engines to see but the free tour ride was the best.... Wait no the pie and soft icecream was the best....
Interesting place to visit. Its a look back to life and how stuff was done before plastic and huge amounts of technology. All ages, but more interesting for school age and up.
Really interesting displays and very Educational. Check out the corn grinding, train ride, milking demonstration, forging, wheel wright, spinning museum, and weavers.
One of the Greatest treasures in all of Vista! Love, treasure and support them in some form.
If you are any kind of machinery buff you have to visit, there is a bit of everything.
A huge array of vintage equipment to look at. Would love to come back during a working show
Amazing little Gem in Vista. SO MUCH HISTORY
First time busy. Will go next year. Very nice, and family oriented.
When we got there we were under the impression that we could go inside the buildings, after trying to enter a couple of them and finding out they were locked we called the office and she informed us there were no tour guides. She couldnt have told us that when we paid! I will never go back and wouldnt recommend this place to anyone.
Fantastic place for any one into old classic things great service and great price.
Great museum and the staff are so great at willing to answer questions. Make sure to bring your walking shoes because there is so much to see! Thursdays and Saturdays there are a lot of volunteers on the grounds to help with questions. They also do a spring and fall show that is a must see. If you are looking to see pieces of history that range from 1870 to 1950 this is the place to go!
I went on a day where there wasn’t much going on. Everything is covered in dust but that’s because it’s outside and it add to the aesthetic of the place. By far the best part was the antique clock museum. The gentleman inside gave me and my friend out own personal tour since we were the only ones there. It’s a small little room but is jammed packed with intriguing facts and history and art.
Great place to take the family. Also cant wait to attend other events there
Nice place to visit
I have always enjoyed engines! I wish i would have visited on a day the steam engines were running, but I wasnt quite that lucky on this trip. Check their website to try and catch these goliaths in action!
$5 per adult. We spent 2 hours wandering and talking to volunteers at the blacksmith shop and weavers building. Great pieces of history all over the place.
Big and lots to see. Interesting to see back a hundred years.
Inaccurate website information. Arrived to find no docent available for help as told through a phone call.
A really nice trip back in time with old machinery and great docents
Great place that covers a wide range of our rich industrial past in this great country.
This was great fun!!! I wish I had taken some photos!
Visited during the October expoLots of fun, lots of exhibits
This place is amazing. We actually went on a day that weaving demonstrations were occurring. We were able to walk around the grounds and see all the Antiques, Engines, Tractors and Cars ; they are a must see. Need to go on a Sat when the museum is open.
We came for the Summergrass Bluegrass Festival. Good facilities & a great setting for a music festival.
If you like old engines and iron, this is a great place to visit.
Was so much fun. Everyone was so nice and eager to answer questions and teach about various machines and engines.
What an amazing day. So much fun. Grandson loves trains and trucks so it was fun and didnt cost a penny.
Excellent time with the kids looking at the technology that brought about the industrial revolution and unparalleled prosperity in America and the entire world. Friendly staff and great food. Live music, unique merchandise, and home made desserts during special events make for an excellent time with the family. Check the website for more detailed information.
A have to see when visiting vista. Steam engines for the men and a sewing museum for the women
Sunday mornings, 10 to 11 we have A. A. Meeting there. Its a wonderful fellowship (alcoholics anominous ) a mixed open discussion sharing our experience, strength @ hope.
We stopped here on a day that several buildings were closed, but we still had a blast exploring. This is a fun place if you like old steam engines, cars, trucks, tractors, blacksmiths. More is open on Saturdays andlooked cool, but with or schedule we were not able to return.
Visit the model train building. Awesome display there!
Always a fun adventure and amazing staff!
This was a very friendly establishment that had no issues helping someone who wasnt familiar with their process. They had multiple local beers on tap as well as some of the best pizza Ive ever had. I highly recommend anyone to go there. It was also football Sunday and they had 5 or 6 different games on!
I went to the antique gas and steam engine museum for the first time today. It was the mini makers fair.I could not have found a nicer group of people. The staff was wonderful.Particularly T.J.He drove my daughter and I back to our car and helped me with my wagon. So nice.I really appreciated it.Thanks TJ, you are a true gentleman.Wendy HartlineAli Hartline
