The Claw golf course is a challenging course with several demanding tree lined dogleg holes, elevated greens, and reacheable par 5s. Well managed and courteous staff, hello Dave and Hunter! Greens always in excellent shape and rolling well. It is the perfect layout to walk as holes run contiguous to one another. Prices are resonable and their are annual memberships for regulars. Go Bulls!!
An ok golf course to play if youre a beginner or just not very good. The greens were in excellent shape, the tee boxes were decent. However, if youre not from Florida and dont know what a fire ant mound looks like, you may want to play a nicer track because there were fire ant mounds everywhere, even in the fairways. Also, the place just seems tired & run down. I get that its relatively cheap but I would think that a major college university would have a much nicer golf course
It has 18 holes...thats good. Its a good course, if theyd put a little money into it. About half The greens arent in very good shape, the clubhouse is condemned, black mold if Im not mistaken is what he said and apparently its been like that for a while. Theyre running the course from basically a small trailer in the parking lot because of the clubhouse being closed.
I love playing the Claw because I am surrounded by what nature has to offer and its a peaceful environment, and it doesnt have houses everywhere so I am not in somebodys backyard. Great course to learn how to play, although it has a lot of narrow holes and water so bring extra balls.
The greens were good with only a few spots. Everything else was great.
The worst place to play golf in Tampa. No range balls, no access to practice areas, and the course is an abolute dumpster fire. Save your money and a more accommodating place to enjoy your weekend.
Not bad. Some patchy greens, a few patchy tee boxes, but a fun course thats tighter than most. Worth the price.
The greens are fairly nice here. No clubhouse is an issue. And where are the bathrooms located?
I’ve been to the claw over many times over the last couple years. I went today again for probably the 15th time and first time in 6 months and was in the best condition out of all the times. The greens were perfectly cut with no holes, no super long grass in the rough, staff and maintenance clearly have been upgraded. Always a great time at a great price but for $22 18 holes and a cart for student fee it doesn’t get better than that. Good work y’all
Just stopped by this afternoon.Very excited to play very soon.
Fun course to play on! Recommend going around 2pm when pieces get a little cheaper. Theres not really a pro shop right now as the building as close down but theyre working on fixing that, and that also means the main restrooms are a trailer too. But for a good round of golf on a challenging course this is a good pick.
Greens are in great shape right now.
Was so excited to play The Claw. Had heard from many that it was a wonderful layout, challenging, and excellent conditions. It certainly is a wonderful layout and challenging, but the conditions were dreadful. I can accept that the pro shop and bathrooms are in temporary trailers, but the golf course was awful, almost unplayable. I clearly asked the pro shop when checking in (based off the trailers and concern) what was the condition and they indicated it was in great shape. I have been playing the game for 50+ years. I was so looking forward to this day to enjoy with my daughter and family, and it was spoiled. To pay that much money for that was disgraceful and Billy Casper Golf should be embarrassed.
Played today, course was tough but was in good shape. Carl was great, really had a nice time. Thanks.
The golf course isnt in very good shape, the sand traps are nice and soft though. You would think that it would be nice considering there a a golf team
Love the course even though it chews my game up. Greens are super fast. Nothing sticks unless it comes straight down. Fairways and rest if course is pretty shabby. Pro shop is now in a trailer in the parking lot. Bathroom is a porta potty trailer. Cart barn should be condemned.
I was very disappointed in the club house and grille. Buildings are condemned and the pro shop is a temporary building in the parking lot. The course is in decent shape. Greens are very fast. Ashamed tha USF let it get in this shape.
When I first played The Claw ten years ago while visiting from out of state, the conditions werent ideal, but the design made up for it. I had always looked forward to returning and was encouraged by the news that the course had been renovated.Four years ago, I moved to Sarasota. My best friend is a USF grad who had fond memories of playing The Claw while in college. Knowing that the design was more important than less-than-perfect conditions, we were undeterred by the online reviews and we made our plans to visit. We were shocked to find the course to be a complete mess -- tees, fairways, and greens. Less concerning, but consistent with the course conditions, the staff operates from a trailer, because the clubhouse has been condemned.I dont know whose fault it is, but this is a black mark on USF and the management company, Billy Casper Golf. If money was put into a renovation, it was wasted. The maintenance staff is either severely underfunded or incompetent. The Claw isnt some throwaway, rural golf course that might be written off as a sign of the difficult times in the golf industry. It is a classic, first-class design that deserves preservation. What a horrible shame.
This is just my initial review of the place. Only visiting the driving range. Not too bad, driving range hitting area was a little rough but not a surprise as most public driving ranges are about in that shape. They have a large hitting net to trap balls which is a nice touch. My one gripe would be the practice putting green can only be used by the golf team which is a shame there’s not a practice putting green for the public. Really need to work on my putting. My best guess is that people using in the past didn’t treat it properly so they had to ban the public. Probably won’t go back because of this and I’ll try to find somewhere to work on putting but overall can’t call it too bad of an experience. If I ever play the course I’ll update my review based on that. Go bulls!
Needs a little TLC. Staff was pleasant and helpful! And when I called to rent clubs, they let me know that it was basically clubs from the lost and found. The course was in tough shape for the cost.
Decent course for the price.
Amazing experience. Great natural landscapes and wildlife. Amazing value as well. Loved this place.
Fairways are a bit wider than many people say. As with many Florida courses, they could use some cooling fans around the course to help golfers during the summer heat.
A golf course without an attitude :-)A pure meditation in motion where I want to believe that my carbon footprint is to a minimum.Challenging course and fare price.
Love this course! It was my home course while I attended the University of South Florida. And since I live nearby, I still try to play there regularly. The course is very well maintained and is relatively challenging. Given the price point, its a great place to play. There is never a shortage of wildlife either.
Absolutely the worst course I’ve ever seen in my life. And I’ve seen Baghdad, Iraq. I can’t even believe it’s open. Fairways were nonexistent. The entire course was “the rough”. The tee boxes hadn’t been mowed since 1977. I golfed 1 hole and left. It was so bad that I didn’t even ask for a refund. The sequel to caddyshack should have been filmed here. If my group would have golfed the entire 18 holes we would have lost 235 golf balls in the fairway and shot a 178.
Staff was very courteous and helpful when I bought the gift card.
First and last time at this course. Entire course in terrible condition. No grass at all in some tee boxes, fairways overgrown, greens not maintained. So disappointing. I am an alumni and embarrassed for this course. USF is a great school. They can do better than this!
When its good, its good. But when its bad, ooooh boy is it bad (conditions). Most shots out of the rough end up being like hitting off concrete, sand, or mud.
A great value and challenging course for all levels of play.
Terrible!!!! Diseased greens, not a good shot on the course, more dirt in fairways than grass. I wouldnt pay more than $10 for a round here. Paid for 18 left after 9!!!
Excellent course!
Cow pastures are nicer. Tee boxes with no grass, course doesnt drain, water and mud everywhere. You will get no roll on your drives and may not find it even though you watched it land in the fairway. Driving range is a POS, no grass, no labels to mark distance, no mats to hit from. Greens are so so, need to have the weeds killed. Clubhouse matches the course and driving range. #USF should be embarrassed to have its name on this course.Bottom line: The Claw is a $10 course that charges $20.
This place was bad to begin with. Now, it’s by far the worst conditioned golf course I have ever played in my entire life. USF needs to do something about it, reflects very poorly on the entire university. Just close the place down for a year, blow it up and start from scratch, seriously. The entire course reeks of mud and weeds, smells like a cow pasture.
Good value and a fun course! I always enjoy playing here.
You get what you pay for in the course be maintained...still one of the toughest in the area for all skillsets
Very fun golf course at an affordable price. The fairways were a bit rough but definitely dont effect the round. I thought there would be several irritating students since its based near USF but that actually wasnt the case.
Awesome but how would you expect me to play this one?
I golf there about once a month. Its not the best kept course in the area but its cheap so I keep going back there. The greens are in decent shape. The golf carts last the whole 18 holes. A few changing holes and a free easy ones. Overall, its an average golf course. If the greens are in better shape, I would give it a 5 start rating. If you sign up for there text or email subscription, they will send you special deals. I get about 3 text per week from them.
Ive played this course multiple times and every single time I go back I swear its only cause its dirt cheap to play. the fairways are brown and covered in divots. Tee boxes are mostly sand and dirt with some brown grass on the sides. Greens run very slow. Last time I played here my cart broke got stuck in the mud and was waiting over 30 minutes for help.
Low priced golf and in decent condition
This was our third time playing there in 3 years. Last 2 times, club rental was free. But this time, we had to pay $20+ (each) to rent. And were told the clubs had never been free. And these rental clubs are horrible! Dented, rusted, not cleaned, mixed brands, left handed clubs mixed in. If youre going to gouge players for clubs, at least go get some decent sets, so we feel like we get our monies worth.
Course is in rough shape right now.
Not bad for the price..
Thats being nice, it was the worst course Ive ever played .
See the course daily and always seems in good condition. keep it up.GO USF BULLS
Umm, its a golf course. Ive heard it has been in good condition in the past, but unfortunately, when we played it, the course was in terrible shape. That said, 25 bucks for 18 and a cart is never a bad deal.
Fair to moderate conditions, good Value, good Pace, fair price, especially on a Holiday weekend during Snowbird Season
Good tight course at USF. Challenging narrow course with a good layout. Greens were in good shape and rolled quick. Fairways were well maintained and the claw was challenging as usual. Staff was friendly although there was no cart service. Good course at a good rate.
Over booked and with no pro shop, no bar as well--at least charge less when these are the conditions.
My favorite place in the world. Tough, narrow, lots of fun. Lots of Wild Things 2. Greens are a little raggedy compared to what they have been but otherwise great place
You get what you pay for.. Staff were halpful anp pleasant enough, the bunkers and greens were in good condition however the fairways and tees werent in great shape the general cleanliness of the facilities could also do with a clean
This place is kind of a dump, the fence is dilapidated, termite infested and falling apart in more than one spot. Supposed to be the prestigious USF golf team location. Hah. If its so prestigious, why cant they afford new fence?Edit 2019: I lived across from here for 3 years, so naturally they got a new fence the month we moved into our new condo xD new fence does look really good.
Affordable, approachable. I go here just for fun with friends who want to learn. Chill place to hang out during the winter. For the price you cant complain about anything, it literally is a practice area. I actually like the carefree and friendly atmosphere.
Great course for the price. Some of the fairways were flooded on the back nine. Go early as I have played here 3 times and twice have had the sprinklers shorten my round.
Could be in better shape but for the price its a must.
This is an excellent course. Very well maintained, beautiful landscape, friendly staff. Dont listen to the bad reviews - go out and try it for yourself. I liked it so much that I bought a membership after my first round. Have fun!
Greens were in great shape. Staff was friendly and welcoming.
Ya know what, lot of times in golf you get what you pay for. This is a nice enough course for the money and challenging enough for most. Not the best but far from the worst course I have played and good for the money you pay to play it. I will play it again for sure.
Very surprised at the poor condition of the facility. The clubhouse and cart storage buildings are rotting away. The course is a wonderful layout, falling into disrepair.
Course not very well maintained, cant even get a hot dog at the turn, buildings run down
Good course and good value but a bit more difficult than you would expect. and holes that used to have water dont any longer.
Nice course design well located in the midst of the campus, maintanance allows for improvement
Good price. Greens were ok, a few were better than others almost perfect. They are small and elevated (that old early 1900s style). Very affordable and even more so thru golf now website/app.
Great value, in need of some tlc. Really challenging.
I love USF but the golf course is in pretty sad shape. Greens are dry and dead and fairways are sparse and bare in places. The bunkers are surprisingly some of the best around.
Horrible golf course... Greens look like sand traps, unkept & what you would expect on a course ready to close... Fairways & tee boxes not much better...USF should be ashamed to call this a major university’s course & embarassed to host any kind of tournament, match, etc... here. Pace of play was ridiculous. Almost 4hr 45 min for 2:00 tee time...Used to play this course regularly during my time as a student there, but haven’t played in a couple of years & will never return.. Even talked highly about course to my friend from California before today’s round... WOW did I look like an idiot for boasting about course... Should just move in the livestock & finish course off... Land would be better used for new dorms or medical building addition...Plenty of other courses in area with similar greens fees that actually have a maintenance crew!
I finally found the worse golf course in Florida. Tee boxes in horrible shape. Greens had weeds and bare spots. One green even had cart tires marks across the green. Tee box ball markers even in bad shape. Cart paths looked more like a atv trail. Sad because it has a good layout but the maintenance is severely lacking. Also my golf cart break did not work.
Not well maintained at all..been here before..disappointed
It gives me great sadness to write this review since this is my home golf course. I’m a alumni from USF and to see that course in the condition it’s in, it’s just not right. The greens and tees are in horrible condition (I played on 8/6/18) I complain about to the assistant manager and he seemed like it didn’t matter. And to me it matters, especially when I’m paying a regular fee.. in part i had some fault going there, because if I knew it was that bad. I wouldn’t have gone... do your do diligence..
Nice course.. Fun to play..
Tight little track, great irons usage, very few straight fairways, good value, greens decent, I made a couple 20+ footers!, will return!
Play here at least once every winter when I am down in Tampa. Great value, great service. Tee boxes are always a bit below par, so to speak, but the course is in fantastic shape! Highly recommend.
Fair at best
Usually a great price, especially if you book online. It can be challenging with some of the narrow fairways. Be prepared to spot some large gators on the course!
Great price but facilities could use some sprucing up.
Great course. Friendly staff.
Lots of wild life turkeys, geese gator. Course was very demanding greens not in the best shape.
Place is decent especially for the price. Most of the time we can get in at 15-20 bucks a head. Course isnt bad at all like I said, for the price.
The green fees and food/beer prices are decent, the shape of the course was very average. What kills me is the pace of play. Im a very average golfer, low 90s is a solid round. I found it impossible to develop a rhythm.
One star for the Twilight price of $18. Course conditions were unplayable. Greens were chopped. Unable to put without the ball bouncing and veering. Absolutely no maintenance or signs that the course ever worked on.
Course was in vety bad shape all around! I was surprised to see it look as bad as it did. Fairways will not cut green too shabby divots and spots all and patches USF should be ashamed.
Soggy but playable.. would come again.
Fun course, good value.
Tough course. They do a good job maintaining it on a very limited budget. Dont come here and expect a country club but do come here with your A game.
Pretty decent course for the price, a few of the holes had some pretty serious water issue and a few rough spots but overall I enjoyed playing here
Good place for golf
If you keep it in the fairway youll be fine.
0 stars horrible, 27$ to play a s--- course
Challenging layout but could be because Im terrible at golf! Loved playing here. If you dont mind skipping a few holes the 5pm and later prices are the best.
Could be a very nice course. Just needs some TLC
Dont waste your money. Possibly the worst kept course in Hillsborough county.
Rough shape, tough course, still like playing there!
Cheap tee times. The course is challenging, but beautiful. Can be crowded, but a solid full length course.
Course is always in good condition. Driving range needs some help. Its more sand than grass, and range balls are weighted so dont go expecting to figure out club distances.
The course is relatively well maintained for the money. Its challenging and long overall I like playing the course. Its greens and fairways are really eaten up on some portions and during the dry seasons the course is in worse condition. Practice range is mostly for short game.
Course is challenging. Course rating from the farthest tees is 71/72. The greens and tee boxes will have dry spots here and there throughout the course. Overall I like the course for the price and condition and challenge. Worst part about it is that I always get low battery carts which die on me 4-5 holes into the game. This has happened a couple times. Other bad things have to deal with the wait the course can build up towards the end of the day, especially with everyone coming in for cheap prices after 4/5 pm-- people will start to jump around the course to play as many open holes as they can it slows down the overall play. Wish the starters had better control of this, never see them checking the course throughout the day.
So your playing golf and somebody kicks a soccer ball next to you. Not the kind of course I like.
