We went to the museum about a month ago for the pirates event. Everyone that was there was very nice and knowledgeable. There was fun activities for the kids and lots of different exhibits. It was a very good experience.
The Sumter Co. Genealogical Society is in the basement of the museum in the front of the house. I went there to find some of my ancestors who faught in the Rev War. I want to join the DAR group. Found them in books from the 1770s. They have the whole East Coast of books from the early 1770s. So if you are looking for someone, they might have it. There is a $20 non-member fee per day. I asked why and the man said, they are all volunteers and its just a way to get a bit of funding to help with daily operations. Im fine with that. They have books and local maps for sale also. Museum back country area is what Sumter Co would have look like in the 1700’s. They have Back County days 2 times a year and other events throughout the year. Pirate day is a fun one in June. Beautiful place for weddings and other events. Beautiful place to take pictures also. They also have costumes for rent.
This place has some amazing facts...check it out
This is a treasure hidden away right under our noses in the middle of town. The gardens and house were beautiful. This is the beginning of January, so there is quite an impressive display of mature Camelias in full bloom. I imagine in the spring, summer and fall it will look like a beautiful spread from the pages of Southern Living magazine. The aesthetics are matched only by a rich history, delivered by a very knowledgeable and welcoming docent and is kept going by a lady(equally friendly and full of knowledge)we found working just outside the gift shop. I will definitely be back and will bring more people next time I visit.
Great place to gather with family and friends.
Love going to the museum and my kids enjoy learning history at special events
Those who forget their history are doomed to repeat it.The Sumter County Museum is a great place to learn about how people lived their lives in our states past. The people who work and volonteer are knowledgeable and friendly, and welcome questions and opportunities to share their knowledge.I encourage both visitors to Sumter and local people who have never been to their Sumter County Museum to spend a day visiting our historical past. You will enjoy it, I did.
Take a step back and learn about Sumter County history. Visit a homestead and see how your ancestors lived. The staff is incredibly friendly and helpful. I would love to come back and visit the geneological society, as they were unfortunately closed for renovations when I visited.
Great history of not only Sumter but also of SC. Great staff
People were very nice during the field trip
Shrimp fest yummy oyster roast even better
A great experience ... extremely educational, beautiful grounds and a friendly, caring staff. I highly recommend!!
The gardens and house were beautiful.
Love this museum. The staff members are very helpful and friendly. Check the museum website or Facebook page if you want to know more.
Its awesome cause my Momma works there!
Great place. Very friendly and helpful staff. The village set up in the back really offers insight on 1800s living in SC.
Nice place to take the family
Sumter County Museum has a good snapshot of over 200 years of USA history. I liked the military and Coca Cola articles and displays.
I have lived in Sumter for over 7 years and never even knew this was here. The displays of historical furniture and dishware are incredible, reminding me of several castles I visited in England. The amount of information posted is also amazing. I expected to be there an hour based on the size of the building. It took an hour and a half to get through and see everything and then I found out they also have an area in the back that has buildings typical of a one family farmstead with tools and implements and even more information. Overall very satisfied with this trip and for $3 per person to see over two hours of content, I am impressed and will be recommending this museum in the future!Oliver the feline host is an added treat! When we walked in the door he walked up and sat in front of us as if he were about to give us an introduction to the museum. Very friendly staff!
The oyster roast was great, will definitely attend again!!
Was nice to learn history of area
Had a good tour learned a lot about the founding of the area the Great house was beautiful
This place is awsome, the people are great there. If you like history this is the place to go.
Whoever didnt get to the Shrimp Fest...unless youre allergic...missed an excellent event!
Nice venue, well-kept, interesting
Sumter hidden treasure nice place if u like local history
Very nice place
They have great programs, a couple of times a year, with costumed interpreters, for free.
I like this museum although the arrangement is too plain. Some drama can be added to the way items are presented. Apart from that - great atmosphere.
Nice collection of local Sumter and SC cultural history. Live exhibits during the summer.
Photographed a big high school reunion
Went to shrimp festival and enjoyed myself
