Awesome hiking trails for any skill level. You can combine trails to make an easy family hike or add on alot more miles to take in all the scenery. The hemlock and rhododendrons are very beatiful. Theres some great trails for mountain biking. Also spotted some nice campsites. State forest land allows primitive backpack camping at these sites.
Absolutely beautiful hiking area with lots of different trails. Ive hiked here several times now and have done different trail routes each time. Parking is limited, but Ive never not been able to find a spot. There are always other hikers, but its never felt crowded. Wear good shoes as its pretty rocky, even on the lower trails. Highly recommended! Gorgeous spot just a few minutes outside State College.
We always love to hike shingletown when we get bored or start feeling cooped up. The trails range from easy walk, to rock climbing. So whatever mood you are in there is something for you!
Magical spot on this planet, great hike, awesome vistas and the quiet peaceful zen to this place makes it an invisible fortress of solitude if thou seeks such things. Go all the way to the summit of Bald Knob and commune with Mother Nature, I drink from most of the mountain streams in PA and this one is pristine, clean, pure and gives you super human strength when you drink it non-filtered right from the stream itself.
A hidden gem located right around state college. For a second, I thought I was in Maine! Natural streams and woodland beauty. Super for hiking! Great for kids! Bring water sandals.
Great area to walk. The path along the crick is so calming.
I almost dont want to review this, because luckily when I visit it is never crowded. Close hike near State College and absolutely beautiful. SO GREEN. Very dog friendly along the creek. Relaxing sounds, interesting plants. Can get muddy after a rain, but thats not unusual. Once you pass the creek the trails arent super clear. But my opinion is that the area is gorgeous and worth it just for a quick hike or to sit and watch the water flow. Wear bug spray, its all shade and prepare for rocks and potential mudd. Take notice of the beautiful shades of green this area has to offer!
Awesome hike through the woods and along the creek. We did the lower, charcoal flats trails and back to lower. It is a bit difficult to identify which trail you are on, so it is a good idea to take or study a map before leaving, mobile phone reception is not great...The trails have lots of roots and rocks, so good hiking footwear is recommended. We took our two labs, who loved being able to get in the water at various places, but it was hard on their paws will the rocky trails.
Beautiful hiking trail, great pictures
Quiet and peaceful place to spend time with family.
No matter what season you visit, Shingletown Gap is always a gem, but you must arrive early to get a parking spot. Please be mindful of private property and obey parking regulations.
It’s a nice place to hike and provides easy access to the Rothrock forest, but it’s busy and parking is very limited. For other options, start your hike in the Bear Meadows area just a few miles south.
Lovely hiking trail that follows a stream and is a gentle hill much of the way, getting steeper later on. Dogs loved jumping in and out of water as we hiked.
Perfect walk with a slight incline and nice views.
Lovely place to hike. I bike here on weekends and continue biking on the mountain and then lock the bike to hike. Very nice and peaceful.
Great place to hike.
Gorgeous trails.
Nice quiet place to hike in the mountains along a stream. Decent parking.
Great hike for 2-3 hours
Nice trails little bit crowded in the parking lot
Easy to moderate trail along mountain trout stream. Limited parking at lower end
Nice walk. Very rocky. Even in July, you have to cross streams a few times. Dont go without bug spray. Your speed will dictate the workout.10 car parking lot.
Beautiful trail! Rocky so bring good shoes and/or poles.
A great place to hike or bike, complete with a stream and several great views. Note that if you plan on mountain biking, youll need to hike your bike for a little bit to get into the trail system.
Favorite local trail to take my kids, now 5 and 7. It does get muddy if its rained recently.
Very rocky terrain. But awesome walk along the stream.
Great hiking area. Get a Rothrock purple lizard map!
Love solo hiking here in winter.
There is a small parking area for maybe 10 cars. If the lot is filled? You can turn the car around and park along the road in some places. The hiking here is as hard or as easy as you want to make it. The flat trails are well beaten and you will see many people. Then there are trails that go up mountain ridges that provide more solitude. Many of the trails here connect to other trails in the area, so it is possible to hike all day and explore.
I always enjoy hiking here. It can be fairly secluded depending on the trail but some trails get a large amount of foot traffic. With easy to moderate hikes I think shingletown gap is good for everyone.
One of my favorite places to visit!!!
Absolutely beautiful!!
Wet today, but nice temp for hiking.
Although I got lost it was a very enjoyable experience with my family
Beautifully maintained trail systems
My sore ankles may disagree with me, but I really enjoy walking/hiking at Shingletown Gap. I have yet to go up any of the steep trails (because I was not aware enough to notice them), but we did the entire walk back on the Lower Gap Trail (which basically runs into Laurel Road). Its a slight incline much of the way, but nothing strenuous or too rough for an asthmatic. For those looking for a view, that is not the best option. Since there is no major elevation gain, there is no view payoff either. This is not a good trail for people who have issues with knees or ankles, as it can be very rocky and uneven. It is worthy of being cautious, because as with many trails in Central Pennsylvania, there are major rocks to contend with. All in all, it is lovely and relaxing, and is a nice place to escape the hustle and bustle. It is a tree-covered trail, so its okay to do in peak sunlight since you wont fry. I DO recommend bug spray, however.
The climb is hard with some obstacles not cleared out, but the end gives you a great view of state college.
I just love this place. Great for hiking!
Nice trails!
Beautiful hiking
Hiking in winter here is really fun as the trail is normally easy.
Probably the best, closest hiking to State College. There are a lot of trails here - you can walk along the Roaring Run at the bottom of the gap, or seek some views on either side by ascending Bald Knob or Tussey mountain. Any of these can be spun into good day hikes, for an hour or several. You can get some nice views of Mount Nittany, and back towards state college, and can connect up with the Mid State Trail.Trails are well blazed, and you can find maps and trail guides online. The place is only about 15 mins from State College. The parking area is small, so try to get in early.
Great trail....nice mountain stream with native brook trout
Great hiking trails. Well maintained. The small parking lot can be super overcrowded though.
Beautiful trails, tie in with the MST. A great place for dogs along the creek.
Dont come here police will ticket you for parking
