This is a very special Skowhegan landmark and beautiful piece of Bernard Langlois sculpture. Also a terrific place to eat a quick lunch and watch people coming and going, if you like that sort of activity. Adjacent to Cumberland Farms convenience store and gas station.
Our world famous landmark is a great place to hang out with friends.
Cool to see, not much else to do. Start here then explore the downtown shops :)
Indians for life.
Very unique and interesting
Skowhegan Indian was designed in honor of a Abnaki tribe woman. Many people have referred to the statute as a man. You can tell by the decorative jewelry, long dress and fishing net. Bernard celebrated the Woman Indian!
The skowhegan Indian is a great monument to let you know you have hit the center of town
Kind of cool, in back of Cumberland farms store. Never knew it was there. Little bit of history, dedicated to indigenous people.
Its nice finding these tall sculptures
Stands tall n proud with a beauty like no other, its been in skowhegan for as long as I can remember....
Great reminder of our history
A neat old indian statue
I love this piece of art, as well as, his other pieces displayed by the Indian and around Skowhegan. The Indian was restored approximately 4 or 5 years ago after the city had a request for bids open for many years as termites and ants had been eating away at the Indian. Following the restoration, the city of Skowhegan installed other wooden pieces of art by the Indian and the Riverwalk.
Cool landmark, definitely wasnt expecting it to be there!
Excellent tribute to the Native heritage of the area, but in a little rough shape these days. Looks like Its in the process of preservation efforts though. Nothing too spectacular, sadly in a back parking lot of some businesses. Proud landmark for the locals though, with good reason, but not like a national monument or anything. Definitely worth seeing, and taking a photo of if youre in the area of Skowhegan, even if just to say you did. Also no fee, so free is always good.
The Indian represents skowhegan...he is a symbol of pride and honor...
Grew up in Skowhegan, history of it aside I hope it becomes a historical landmark and not torn down because people being offended by a past we cant change...
Massive wooden Indian in the center of town. Great cultural landmark.
Very cool place
We will always be THE SKOWHEGAN INDIANS the burocrats cant take that away a sign of respect not disrespect to all who voted our school name be changed after hundreds of years
I am going to miss you when we are all the same
Its just awsome:)
Got a ice coffee at cumbys and then gazed at the fbi
Just a ridiculously tall statue behind a gas station.
Cool statue
It always makes me smile to see this monument. I have always enjoyed coming here and seeing him standing tall.
A bit of local history.
I go here when I go to Cumberland farms
I love this place because i am part Indian, and one of my family members helped design and build it. It os part of my heritage
Shows a part of Skowhegans heritage
The sculptures around town by artist Bernard Langlais can be somewhat controversial. A lot of people think they are strange, crude, even ugly. The indian is no exception. Some say its not representative of the native Americans of the area so should be taken down. Some say its in a bad location and should be moved to a more prominent area so more people will see it. It is certainly large, a good thing since its tucked away in the corner of a parking lot. Whether you love it or hate it, its been a part of our town for nealy 50 years. Personally I like it and all of the Langlais sculptures around town. They are all unique and inspire many discussions and debates. Thats art and thats Skowhegan.
Only statue in skowhegan that isnt extremely weird!!
Good art
