Awesome Art Museum. I happened up this place by chance while exploring Shreveport over 25 years ago. I had no idea what the building was as I saw it while driving. Im super glad I stopped. Now I make a point to visit whenever Im in Shreveport. Its been free to visit every time Ive come. There is always something new and beautiful to see, especially while walling around their landscaped grounds. I highly recommend stopping to look around.
Always a great walk here. A truly amazing and unique place.
Even though the Gallery is closed to the public right now, the Gardens are open to us. Such a beautiful place be in nature!
We love Norton!! Great grounds to walk, talk, run around, relax, etc. Family friendly! Art exhibits are closed due to covid. Hopefully they will reopen soon!!!
A beautiful property with tons of gorgeous art to look at inside and a beautiful garden you can walk in outside. A great place to go with your family
I loved this place my kids always wanted go here for the weekends they ️ it .
Great areas to meet, sit, walk and enjoy the beauty of the gardens!
This gallery offers an incredible experience, both inside and out. They have an incredibly diverse offering of art and historical displays. This is a true gift to the entire region.
So gorgeous! The outside is equally if not more beautiful than the inside. Dont miss out!
Absolutely a rare find. I stumbled upon this place when a coworker showed me pictures with her dog in the trail at this location. Came with my family over the weekend and the kids absolutely loved it. Now I am in process of buying a home nearby where we can visit the trail more often.Keep up the great work!Have not visited the museum itself, but soon will!
This place is absolutely amazing. They host different exhibits from time to time which are equally wonderful. My husband and I went one weekend, then the very next took our children. It was a wonderful experience and we look forward to it again and again.
Great if you love the outdoors
I absolutely love this place! It’s the best hidden gem of Shreveport and always leaves me with a smile. Admission is free, and there is a good couple hours worth of art to check out with some changing exhibits.Bring the kids a long to check out the museum and be sure to take a walk along the trails in the back!
Hidden GemSoon I got here, always like to explore around places. It’s small town compare to big metropolitan cities. Paid visit to the R.W.Norton Gallery and Garden. I must say oh my GOSH..... this was the last thing was expecting when I got up in the morning. I mean beautiful art pieces exhibited and kept very well and organized once I hit the inside the museum and specially when you have picturesque view from the windows. Very few sit front desk staff. I’ve been told taking pictures not allowed in the gallery so we I did not even try which is very difficult for me to stoping my self to not taking pictures .However it makes sense when I was experiencing the surrounding with great art collections.Highly recommended place to visit, collections has Virgin Merry cast from “the pietà by Micheal Angelo” Rodin, prints, posters, landscape paintings and many more. Simply awesome. On the other hands out side garden worth buying and spend some time. All free .Recommendations suggestions:They don’t have dedicated public parking but you can park outside.Taking pictures not allowed so please do respect.Don’t carry backpack or any big carrying bags it could damage art work in side the museum.Do carry drinks for outside walk and wear relax clothing according to the weather.Do check timings and opening days during the week.Have fun guys
Nice exhibit, but gallery attendants made it awkward and less enjoyable. They literally were 2 steps behind us following us to every painting. Would have been more enjoyable if I didn’t feel like I was being followed. Also, it appeared as if they were taking notes on us.
What a great place to spend an afternoon. Lots of interesting art from around the world, nature trails, and duck ponds. And its all free, great place!
What a great gallery, a jewel in the swamp. Love coming here and the staff is so helpful and informed.
Art Lovers paradise!! Took me 3 hours to go through and could have stayed longer! I cant believe such an amazing collection is free! Many styles of painting and sculpture that are breathtaking! I have been twice and still have not been able to walk around the grounds which are 43 acres of landscaped gardens due to remodel or bad weather. Looking forward to that next time! No photography is allowed which was so hard for me. They did allow one picture of the poinsettia tree!
Beautiful Azaleas in bloom in summer is breath taking. The bridge over the brook is a wonderful place to have photographs taken. Well actually the whole grounds are beautiful. The Gallery is very interesting they have some for everyone. There are some very beautiful pieces and some rare pieces as well. I have gone a couple of time s and they add pieces all the time.
Largest collection of bronze sculptures i have ever seen in my entire life...
This is one of Shreveports best kept secrets. We love to roam around the gardens, visit the exhibits and attend their special events.
This gallery changed my outlook on Shreveport as a whole. A hidden jem, indeed. Beautiful collection & I only had a chance to see the American collection. Sculptures were wonderful. Gardens were beautiful even though many flowering plants not in bloom. Japanese Maple collection is extensive. Friendly staff! I would have liked to see more local African American art & what they did have, would have liked to see in more prominent displays. Im sure Shreveport has a more rich African American history that could be told. But, maybe that is not the goal of this particular gallery.
Beautiful spot to walk and enjoy nature
Sarah and I love to visit this museum and gardens. They have featured some amazing collections of various genre of art and collectibles. It is worth a stop over if you are in this area of Northwest Louisiana in Shreveport.
Love everything about this place! The art gallery, the gorgeous gardens, and the events they hold.I visit at least once a week with the kids to explore the new flowers in bloom and visit the fairy garden. Its by far my favorite place in Shreveport!
Beautifully kept premises
An excellent stop and a worthy visit. Learned a ton about the region, saw a diverse volume of art, loved it all.
Excellent art gallery nestled in a beautiful neighborhood. Very nice selection of American artists. Well laid out and nice decor to accent the art. The european and world art was less than impressive (thus the reduction of one star). The garden and walking park outside the museum was a nice way to finish off my Sunday. All in all I spent about 2 hours here and would definitely recommend.
Makes a great place for photo sessions for any occasion
A collection of Fine Art is only as accessible as the staff that cares for it. The staff is entirely lacking in any finesse or social skills. They did not offer educational Insight on the paintings, even when they overheard discussions. Perhaps this is because their level of education wax their level of social grace, which is nil. The staff made me feel very uncomfortable and unwanted. As a visitor to Shreveport this leaves me with a negative impression of the community and the Louisiana Community in general.
The garden is a great place to come and enjoy a nice walk and view the flowers. I have been many times this year to vote the azaleas Bloom and they are breathtaking. The museum on the other hand was a different experience. The art was great but the employees bordered on stalkers. There was a mommy and me yoga class going on and so there also was a lot of noise. I love the gardens, but not the museum.
I enjoyed the variety of Art exhibited and wouod gladly return everytime I was in the area. Seeing everything from diverse weaponry to tapestry to minerals to egyptian pottery to Italian art! It is absolutely comparable to some of the more familiar and larger known Museums. There was even a small but adorable childrens section that displayed perfect originality and creativity that even the youngest mind would enjoy. Not that I would necessarily encourage small children here exactly but, should you pass through and find yourself intrigued with the idea, do not pass up going simply because your children are with you and you dont think they will enjoy it. It offers such diversity that there is something for all ages.
World class Art Museum right here in Sheveport, LA. Come see what Oil Money can buy you! Norton discovered the Rodessa oilfield.
This is an unexpected treat in the heart of an upscale residential area of Shreveport -- A wonderful little museum. The exhibts are well laid out and the facilities immaculate. Theres something for everyone here, works ranging from Remington to Toulouse-Lautrec. A must see.
Love the gardens and the gallery. Its free and we really enjoyed it. Must experience it if youre here visiting. If you like gardens this one is enjoyable.
The gardens around the art gallery are phenomenal. Their seem to be millions of azaleas in a wide variety of colors. Children love to look for turtles and Koi in the flowing streams and small pools of water. And keep your eyes peeled for the colorful chickens that wander the grounds.
A perfect way to spend an afternoon. A pillar of the local art community.
This place was so beautiful! The gardens are wonderfully landscaped and is an amazing botanical garden. There were even fish and turtles in the pond.
Wonderfully friendly staff & patient with our little ones, too. Such a great asset to our city.
Fabulous and its free!! Best kept secret in Shreveport. Didnt have time to walk the grounds but will next time. SOON. 43 Acres. Beautiful walking trails
I could have spent all day here! Loved the variety and abundance of their art collections.
The R.W. Norton Art Gallery houses an exceptional collection of art spanning more than four millennia. Since its opening in 1966, the museum has become particularly well-known around the country for its impressive collections of works by those titans of western art, Frederic Remington and Charles M. Russell. The R.W. Norton Art Gallery is a teaching museum that uses the art to encourage community participation in thoughtful interpretations and discussions. In the early 1920s, Richard W. Norton (1886-1940) became one of the discoverers of the Rodessa Oil Field in north Louisiana. Over time, Mr. Nortons wife and son began to amass a significant collection of fine art. In 1946, to honor Mr. Norton and for the benefit of the community, Richard W. Norton, Jr. (1919-1974) and his mother, Mrs. Richard W. Norton (1886-1975) created the R.W. Norton Art Foundation. In turn, the Foundation eventually established the R.W. Norton Art Gallery, basing its initial collection upon donations from the acquisitions of the Nortons. Today, due to the on-going efforts of the Board of Control and the Foundations work, the R.W. Norton Art Gallerys offerings continue to expand, grow, and contribute to their community.
Here youll find a Very large art exhibit and traveling exhibits. Impressive collection of art, dolls, guns and a library. After roaming the free exhibits in the air conditioning, a stroll the the garden behind the museum is a treat. Sadly theyve decided no photography.
A must visit. some of the best art i have ever seen, and the gardens are lie heaven on earth
This is a spectacular art museum, and it is surprisingly free admission! Unfortunately, no photography is permitted, which has been torturous! Galleries include: American Art History, Inventing the West, Europe 14th-19th c., Firearms, landscapes, still life, dolls, various historic memorabilia, etc... The current special exhibits: Human, about the human form and Inked about tattoos--- are full of thought-provoking photography. There are also 43 acres of botanical gardens including azaleas, sculptures, and water.
I drove 3 hours to get to this museum today as a last minute Spring Break day trip. I had a bit of a delay due to a check engine light, but figured I would still be able to see a lot of the art if I arrived by 4:00, one hour before closing time. I walked in at 4:20 and the first two men who greeted me were extremely friendly and kind. I proceeded to the first room and looked around for only a short time because the security guard was practically breathing down my neck. I moved on to the next room and an older man told me the museum would be closing in 15 minutes (it was only 4:25). I politely thanked him and moved on. One minute later, this same man told me I needed to keep moving because the lights would be off in 15 minutes. I looked at my watch, confused, but moved to the next room. He walked with me, which I thought was odd, but continued to attempt to look at the art. He told me a THIRD time that the museum would be closing in 15 minutes (at this point, it was 4:30). I told him that he has already told me that a few times and he just smiled at me. I asked about the Botanical Garden and he was confused. He told me that there was a water park around the corner, but I needed to leave the building to get to it. I saw this as a harsh attempt to make me leave so I asked for directions to the bathroom before leaving. This man waited for me in the hallway outside of the bathroom! I left the museum and looked for the garden. I thought it was a little strange that photos aren’t allowed in the garden, so I decided it would be best to leave. I sat in my car while looking up directions to get back home. Everyone who was in the museum left in a large group at 4:50 and all of the employees followed five minutes later. If the employees do not want the gallery open from 10 until 5, then the hours need to be changed or someone should have told me to leave when I walked in. I have never seen anyone behave so unprofessionally at a museum. I always experience great hospitality elsewhere. I will definitely be limiting my trips to Louisiana.
Its an amazing and organized place Ive been there so many times. It makes me feel so calm especially outside.
The indoor gallery has a vast selection of various artworks and different rooms for traveling collections. The artwork varies from paintings to large-scale sculptures. The outdoor gardens are one of Shreveports best kept secrets. The outdoor area behind the art gallery hosts numerous statues that can be found on the walking trails. Along with the sculpted art, there are many small waterfalls and a pond.
They have a great collection of flowers and walking trails. Also if you Ingress they have a ton of portals!! Its been a while since I have been inside to see the art but when I was there it was very interesting.
Beautiful! Displays are wonderfully done, so much to see. A gift shop would be a nice addition. Loved it!!
My goal this weekend was to take some photographs in the garden. This is my hobby. It seems that the people that run the museum and gardens have alienated photographers. Photography is strictly forbidden even in the gardens. It is understandable to not allow it inside with the artwork as the flash could damage the art, but outside on the grounds. Its absolutely ridiculous. I can see no reason for this strict rule. I for one will not be going back until that rule is changed,
A hidden gem in Shreveport. Its a great place to come and just enjoy the birds and beauty of nature.
The Norton is one of my absolute favorite places to visit. It has one of the largest private collections of Russells and Remingtons in the nation. The collection also includes numerus other lesser known American artist from the 1800s and a painting by the impressionist Mary Cassat. There are pieces of the famous Wedgewood pottery, a remarkable collection of unique and rare guns, works by contemporary artists, and the infamous creepy doll room. The library, only open on Saturdays and Sundays is the jewel of the collection in my opinion. The library houses one of the last remaining complete collection of Audubons Birds of America and several 16th and 17th century astronmicial folios. The gardens are beautiful and if you visit be sure to take at least an hour then stroll through the gardens behind the museum. Be prepared to spend at least 2 hours here if not 3-4.
Thank you for giving us a chance to see the wonderful collections arts.Very grateful to the Norton family and the staffs of the museum.
A Shreveport treasure.
The gallery has done itself a disservice i feel in not allowing photographers or videographers to use their grounds. With the implementation of social media reviews and simple advertising from photographs by tagging a location, it could possibly lead the famously beautiful grounds into obscurity. Good luck Norton.
The R. W. Norton Art Gallery and Gardens is a jewel in Shreveports Crown. Mr. Norton, a highly successful businessman and collector of fine art graciously had this gallery built and opened to the public at no cost. It features the detailed bronze sculptures of the American West by Frederick Remington as well as oils by Winchester and other artists, too many to name. There are displays of historic firearms, military equipment of the 18th & 19th centuries and paintings or portraiture to compliment these beautiful displays.Periodically the gallery has short term exhibits on any number of topics featuring art & art history. While there one must take a walk through the gardens especially if in bloom. The flowers are breathtaking. The view of the grounds and surroundings are very beautiful and peaceful. This is definitely a gift from R.W. Norton that anyone who visits the Shreveport area must take in.
Incredible!! Must see! And, free!!
This place is the most beloved place for us in Shreveport. We enjoy to come here very often to see a Garden, to walk in park, to observe nature . And of course, we love the Art Gallery too . There are masterpieces by Edward Szmyd, Loren Adams, Peter Ellenshaw and so on. Thank to founders and the staff who give to us so much pleasure and joy !PS. if it would be possible to mark 100 stars, I would do it)) This place is beautiful and different every time! Especially in spring.
I had a very memorable experience here. The grounds are beautiful, and the artwork is worth a look.
Loved the place and all the beautiful paintings the gallery has. It is far better than MoMA and Metropolitan Museum of Arts at NYC. Awesome!!
Its a beautiful hidden treasure of a museum. If possible, do everything you can to make it to their annual Night at the Museum.
Great museum. Wide collection of painting, sculpture, and prints. Very nice grounds as well.
So first off, this isnt the Louvre or Vatican or Getty Museum. Its Shreveport, Louisiana. In that context I give it five stars.I prepared my wife and kids that we could probably just swing through and see the entire collection in 15-30 minutes. I was guessing they would have a minor work by one or two major artists and a lot of regional stuff. We had to rush to make it through in 1:15, skipping a couple galleries and skimming others.Boy was I surprised. This museum has probably a dozen galleries along a linear layout in a beautiful, lush garden setting. Its heavy on American Westerns and Western Expansion landscapes. They have pretty solid examples of Bierstadt and Remington, along with some stunning landscapes from artists I wasnt familiar with. The European wing has a single Cassat and a few small Rodins, as well as a smattering of other interesting works. They also have a lot of random collections like firearms, art from childrens storybooks, and French and American poster art.Theres something here to delight every taste and some significant examples from some significant artists. Definitely worth a detour a few minutes off the Interstate for this regional jewel.
I love this place! Beautiful inside and out! Very peaceful, a reflective place.
Most interesting collection Ive ever seen
A fantastic collection of art and other historic works
Great collection of firearms. Has some chess sets where my son and I played a few games.
Outstanding colloction, the grounds behind it are absolutely beautiful expecially when the Azaleas and dogwood trees are in bloom
A nice art museum in shrevepor
Very beautiful place and every one is so nice
We mistakenly took a camera on the grounds and the security guard was incredibly rude and followed us out to put it away. I never imagined not being able to take pictures outside, but more Importantly why be rude about it.
Awesome collection and beautiful gardens behind the gallery.
A treasure beyond description !
Hate it yI thought terrible horrible no good very bad is the most even in the world do US
The reason they wont let you take photographs is because 5 people in 1 week took photograph and damaged the garden i know this because my papaw works there
LOVED IT!
Great gallery. Free of charge.
