Although I knew nothing of this industry and had low expectations going in I found the museum well worth the stop. Fairly small space belies the fact that its chock full of memorabilia and other tools of the trade. The museum does a nice job of celebrating and honoring the men who perform the dangerous work of keeping our lives comfortable.
As a retired telephone ops engineer, 40 yr career, I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to this museum. My life long friend Billy Smith is a contributor and retired from Pacific Power in California. On one of his visits back home to Caldwell County, he gathered several of his friends and arranged a short day trip to introduce us to this museum. He shared his intrest there where has been awarded high honors of his lifetime achievement as a career lineman. Its an honor for me to know and proud to call him my friend. While there we noted and were excited to see a bus of future lineman students from CCC&TI pulled into the parking lot, coming for a seminar! We then spent several hours viewing displays, recalling the past and sharing stories on the job! So much fun!Theres just so many contributions from former Duke Power, Bell Telephone and other local utility companies. Great displays even if you havent worked with a utility to enjoy. It is an educational experience for everyone. Highly recommend visiting this museum if a former utility person, telephone, electric company, city or related operations to make a day trip. You will thoroughly enjoy this place.
WOW! I was shocked to find this hidden little gem. I went there expecting a small town museum and instead found a well stocked in-depth view of our industry. Want to take my son there sometime soon.
Really neat museum honoring an important profession which is a bit undervalued. Absolutely worth a visit, especially if youre not really familiar with the profession that keeps power and Telecom flowing. This is certainly a 5 star museum content-wise, but Im giving 4 stars because the hours are a little ridiculous for a museum. Its only open when most people are working since most people work 9-5 M-F (I dont, but its still weird). I guess theyre banking on the idea that people will stop by on a week long vacation to North Carolina. Even still, it would make sense to swap one weekday for a weekend (eg closed on Sunday and Monday instead of Saturday and Sunday) just so more people have the opportunity to check this hidden gem out.
Very interesting!
Good place
