I traveled through or to Seattle often and always try to make time for the SAM! On a November 2020 trip I observed the difference post covid-19 and limited occupancy, cafe closed. Still a wonderful museum of temporary and collective exhibits. Please take time to support our museums and local businesses
Booking online made everything so easy! The museum it self was very well laid out and had a perfect mix of artists and styles! We enjoyed the native PNW art and history the most! The SAM has a HUGE collection of modern and traditional art from the tribes of the Pacific North West, that alone is worth the trip!Very friendly and kind staff to top it off!
There is something for everyone at the SAM, from galleries of contemporary American art, old European masters, an extraordinary collection of Native American works from the Pacific Northwest, to ancient Hellenic and Egyptian pieces. The reservation system is in 30 minute time windows which allow visitors to space themselves out well, and provides a contactless admission system. Dont worry about your coat, they have a self coat check at the door. Maps and additional exhibit information is made available via easy to use QR codes placed throughout the museum, and plenty of friendly staff is throughout the gallery space to offer help, or answer questions. A great place to spend a day with the family!
Like many great galleries and museums this one is no exception in the fact you could likely visit many times and see something new. We spent the afternoon here and even without a special exhibit couldn’t really take everything in. The building is large and the art is generously spread over two floors. Art is clustered around themes or time periods in discrete rooms that are large and airy and spacious. Favourite spaces for me included the modern art, the Indigenous artifacts and the porcelain room. I really appreciated the SAM’s admission policy which makes art accessible to everyone. We easily used public transportation to visit the SAM as it is right downtown and parking and traffic can be stressful. The website is very informative and easy to navigate.
This is a must see on three settings of the sun. Day, afternoon, and night. Beautiful art that allows multiple different aspects and looks for photo projects or mere memoirs. The surrounding area is adventure full & enlightening.
We enjoyed the tranquil and open nature of the well-organized Seattle Art Museum. The museum had interesting collections of porcelain, European and Islamic art, African art and costumes, and modern and classic art pieces. Most interesting was an extensive exhibit of ceremonial costumes and other items from the Indian tribes of the northwestern part of the state. The special exhibit of photographs by Zanele Muholi titled “Hail the Dark Lioness” was most impressive.
I had fun exploring the eclectic selection. My friends and I all have different types of art we enjoy most and we all found what we’re looking for!
Absolutely fantastic. Free the first Thursday of every month, exhibits are top notch and well worth the money, and the gift shop is great. Be sure to get tickets before going during covid or they will not let you enter.
A well curated museum with a bit of everything. Definitely worth the price and they offer student, senior, and military discounts as well. It has a large selection of works with friendly and informative staff. For art lovers and beyond it is a must see when traveling to or through Seattle. Located near many other attractions it is easy to navigate to and from.
One of the best art museums Ive been to. Lots of diverse exhibits.
Very nice museum to visit. It has a lot of different exhibitions from different cultures: African, Ancient Greece/Egypt, European and many more. Its a must go if you like art. Also their pieces from Japan are beautiful and worth seeing. Ill gladly recommend it to others and for sure Ill visit again when theyll open the next Special exhibition.
I visited this beautiful place with such beautiful pieces of art not to long ago with some family members who came over to visit seattle and i have to say it was worth the money and worth the time, although we did come across an employee with such strong attitude towards everyone in the room it was still and enjoyable time. we didn’t get her name but she had red hair.
A long wait for disappointing showMy husband and I are longtime members of SAM. We were pleased to receive an invitation to a members-only viewing of the Georgia OKeefe show. We went online and booked a timed ticket for entry at 1:30 p.m. on Sept. 7. We arrived promptly at 1:30 and had to wait an hour for entry to one room of OKeefe paintings, My husband has severe arthritis and really cant stand in line for that long, There was no consideration given for people with disabilities. This was a waste of a long ferry ride and a lot of our time. I think if you have timed tickets, you should be admitted at that time. I think I may switch to the Tacoma Art Museum or the Museum of Glass, which are much easier for us to get to.
Always a pleasure going through the galleries. The new show, City of Tomorrow is a showcase of Seattle benefactors Jinny & Bagley Wrights personal art collection and its relationship with Seattle. Make an appointment to see it.
Not the biggest, not the flashiest, but a well curated and elegantly presented body of art with a Pacific bent.
Simply amazing. This museum is huge with great works of art in exhibit. There are so many rooms in each floor that have different themes and art that go with it. I knew that SAM was big but once you start walking you really grasp the amount of artwork being held here. Id definitely plan at least 2 hours to take in the art here. They have deals for students including college which is a plus; as long as you have your student ID.
Free on the first Thursday of every month. Special exhibits are not free. A wonderful spacious and great variation of exhibits. Very convenient location just nearby Pike place market. WiFi available. Bag drops available. I easily spent more than 2 hours here, around 3 hours. Very enjoyable.
The Indian exhibition was simply exquisite with jewel encrusted weapons and jewellery! It was the cherry on top of a superb gallery housing a range of masterpieces from all parts of the globe. There is a nice flow to the collection and my personal favourite was the ancient artefacts with some daring to as far back as 2,500 BC
Great museum as for Seattle. It is not as amazing as the New York MOM, but anyway it worth visiting.
Enough space and exhibits to roam for a few days. They did a great job implementing measures to help slow the spread of COVID-19.
This place is inspiring and the staff was really helpful.
Really beautiful, and so thoughtfully curated. The Pacific Northwestern Native art, in particular, is breathtaking! The exhibit perfectly compliments the stunning Singletary exhibit currently at the Museum of Glass. They even had one of his glass artworks. Another highlight for me were the Australian aboriginal paintings. As it is a mid sized museum, give yourself 4-5hrs for full one day enjoyment.
I always love the exhibits here. The art is always diverse and interesting. I feel like they go above and beyond to showcase things you wouldnt always see anywhere else. We go about twice a year and it never disappoints! We most recently went to the Peacocks of the Dessert exhibit and had a great time!
A very interesting art museum with a range of art from Egyptian work to Islamic work to porcelain to Eastern work to Aboriginal work and beyond. The Jeffery Gibson exhibit was excellent. Who knew that such beautiful art could be made with beads. Go while it is there!
A great place to visit. I was really excited to see Artemisia Gentileschis work on display in the last special exhibit. The museum is not as big as the Crocker museum in Sacramento Ca, but still pretty cool.
Wonderful museum! One great perk is that its based on a donation system, so to get in you pick how much money youd like to donate for your entry fee. I think thats brilliant and offers a great service to those who cant afford to pay $30 to go through an educational museum. Beautiful artwork and wonderful staff. Very clean and very well put together. Great colors, great information!
Book online and save time this is a great place to spend time
I really liked this art museum. They have a great variety of exhibitions in the gallery. Very well designed by industrious designers. It’s very good idea to spend one day at least in this art gallery. Quick tip: It’s in downtown and really hard to find parking. It can be better to use public transport.
I visited last month and have to say that I was expecting more from an art museum located in Seattle. They have one Monet (Fishing Boats at Étretat) that was NOT on display. Small collection of Impressionists. I was very impressed with their Native American collection though. The Asian Art building was closed for renovation and is supposed to reopen in February and I might consider revisiting then.
Saw the Native American, Mediterranean, and Asian exhibits they were most excellent. Fabulous works of history displayed properly and easy to appreciate.
The museum is outstanding. They have special expositions. And amazing art work over all. The lady that helped us with the tickets was incredibly friendly and helpful.
SAM has some really interesting art collections. I loved the dot paintings and acrylic art work been out there. It took us a good 3 hours to skim through them all! The place had good enough crowd since it was first thursday of the month.
Lots of unique and informative displays! Plenty of attentive staff to answer questions. Something for everyone here. The cafe is predictably pricey but delicious and has progressive choices. Plenty of walking space around and between exhibits.
Such a wonderful museum-- a true staple in our region. Ive visited museums worldwide, and SAM still stands out. I last visited to see the temporary exhibit, Flesh and Blood. Being able to view Artemisia Gentileschis work in-person was an absolute treat. Thank you SAM!
I loved the museum! Its moderately sized but has so many incredible pieces. I went once by myself and then went back with a friend. I hope to go back someday!
The Barbara Earl Thomas exhibit was excellent.
Amazing Art Museum. Great permanent collection with Art from around the world. And special exhibitions that make it always interesting to continue coming back. Its not cheap $25 per adult which is high even compared to other Art museums in NY, Portland, or other important Art museums. But being an Artist I must pay and visit every opportunity I have. There are special prices for seniors and kids and one day a month for the general public. See website for details. Overall a great experience well worth it.
Lived in the Puget Sound all my life and had never been. Its great, and I wont go long without visiting again. So much beauty and stuff to think about.
Awesome museum. I wish I could see every exhibition they put up. The museum is also great value, entrance fee is donation based, so you pay whatever you feel is worth it to you.My family had a good time here, will do it again next time we are in Seattle.
Great space and laid out in an easy to follow (if you wish) pattern. The exhibits were clearly defined, rooms spacious and art accessible. A bit pricey but we spent most of a Friday here without getting bored or feeling repetitive.A couple of blocks away from Pike Place it’s totally worth the walk.
A wonderful place to visit. Definitely a place to broaden your art culture.
Fantastic art museum with a great cafe. They have an ivory mask from Benin there.. viewing that piece was worth the price of admission.Visiting from Cleveland, I appreciated their collection of art from the Pacific Northwest.
Simply never disappoints. It is is such a well curated environment. Just love meandering through each space. Highly recommend to come in a weekday when only a few people are around. It feels extravagant.
On a recent visit to the SAM I couldn’t stop thinking about contrast between visitors or lack there of between the Pike Place Market and SAM. To me that itself speaks of our cultural values. Thousands of us locals and tourists make the Pike Place Market a destination and a must stop. How often we have the same attitude towards SAM. Even SAM’s brochure references itself as one block from Pike Place Market. It’s location as SAM’s notes is truly in center of downtown. Still we spend more time and money at nearby Starbucks or restaurants and bars as compared to at the SAM. How can the art become worn into our daily life? Not just a once a year special occasion? Let me know. What is about the art that we may make a very special occasion Vs a regular stop in our journey of life? Is it the art, that is perhaps so removed from daily lives of most of us? Is it the price tag for a visit or something else? I felt connected to art wondering through the artist colony in Bilbao Park in San Diego. Some how I don’t get the same feeling walking through museums. Something I need to dig deep and explain to myself.Yes, SAM has a great global collection of art through different period. Northwest Coast Art is truly inspiring and exhilarating. It’s different for the Olympic Sculpture Park. I frequent there to recharge my experiences of living in the Pacific Northwest.
The museum have a little bit of everything. American, native, Asian, ancient and modern art. We loved the porcelain room and Native Australian art by Napangardi. Love the cafe and gift shop.
Always worth a visit and your time. Not much else like it within western Washington. Truly singular.
It’s cool! Love my time there!Especially the Institute of empathy exhibition.
What a great experience at the Seattle Art Museum.I came in for the Disguise exhibition and thoroughly enjoyed every single item on display throughout the museum. My six year old niece really, really loved being able to mix her own sounds. She could have spent hours there and been a very happy and content girl. I loved the video displays and the music playing... It really transported you into another place. The Italian room was one of my favorites. Having spent time in Europe it really took me back to some of the old places I visited there. One of the other features we really loved was the family room... Stuffed animals and puppets... Tablets... Toys... The implements to create your own art... And lots and lots of books! A great space for little ones to express their creative side!I see many, many visits to Seattle Art Museum in our future!
Great art museum. Recommend ubering/walking. Limited parking.Tip: free the first Thursday of every month!
Very Nice collection of art, many varieties of different forms are there to enjoy, Great Experience of VR with inspirational video of art, Many system available to watch videos of origin of art, Volunteer explain art and help to understand better, spacious, Neat Environment, Booked through Library to get free entrance tickets, dates are easily filled, have to book in advance.
I am not big of art in my family, but my daughter and fiance are. They loved it. We got there at about 4pm, with 1 hour left before they closed. We certainly could have used more time. The museum is donation based, but the suggested adult donation is 20 dollars per person. The museum is large and well laid out.
My girlfriend and I come here often and absolutely love it! Amazing artists, shows and overall aesthetic. My absolute favorite was seeing Andrew Wyeth’s show.
It definitely worth to visit.
It is the best art museum .absolutly fantstic.
I havent been to many museums, but this one seemed well curated with plenty of diverse content. The flow kept you moving through the exhibits at a smooth pace and I like that there was a large exhibit of native art. The African art was also spectacular.
Great permanent galleries, as well as special exhibits.my elementary-school-aged kids easily spent over 1 hour here, and had a good time. really cool venue as well.
Nice collection of art and sculpture with a really fun gift shop! Just a few blocks from the ferry and easy to walk to. Free on the first Thursday of the month but every other day there is an admission fee. Some special exhibits cost extra as well. Friendly staff and a very nice cafe too! Definitely stop by and spend a couple of hours here!
I enjoyed their exhibits. Very educational. I like that they had paintings, carvings, porcelain, and had the India exhibit currently.
Nice museum. Lots to see. I noticed it has alot of modern and contemporary art that seems to dominate the collection. But very nice. I like the lay out of the inside. Very well maintained and curated. Lots to see in Seattle but you gotta see the museum since your here.
Is it bad if I just love going to sit in the lobby with the lovely Middle Fork sculpture of a Western Hemlock suspended above my head? On a rainy day (which is many in Seattle) its the perfect place to take a breather between downtown adventures, or after charging uphill. The lobby is completely free and open to the public, as are the restrooms.
I dont visit as often as I should, but theyve had some fantastic traveling exhibitions recently. Its always wonderful to see rare pieces from around the world. They also do a really good job of ensuring there are educational talks and walks to accompany the exhibitions - helps me to appreciate the art even more.
Got a dual membership last fall and it was the best $100 we’ve spent! This museum does a really good job of consistently having new exhibits and experiences for its members! Most of the limited time exhibits are a bit packed at times but, it’s amazing to have the “community experience” brought back! This museum requires easily 2-3 hours by itself and 3-4 if you are doing the special exhibitions. It provides an excellent mixture of modern, contemporary, classic, European, American, Pacific Northwest, Asian, African, and much more.
Variety of art donated by local tycoons and foundations. Interesting and fresh mixture of various topics varying from native American art to contemporary American, pieces from Japan, Australia etc. Worth visiting indeed.
Beautiful collection of paintings, ceramics, and sculptures.
Super cool stuff in here. You really gotta take your time, read the descriptions and understand the thought behind the art. I got a chance to see the jodhpur exhibit when I went and it was nothing short of magnificent.
Great space, with 3 floors of marvelous paints, sculptures and different pieces and expression of art from around the world. Some have audio others videos. Beautiful porcelain. The let you to take pictures for the most parts of the museum. In some of the art they offer more information via phone call. They have different rotation exhibitions. They offer coat checks free, no backpacks allowed.
Wonderful place to visit. Loved the place. Baggage and strollers are not allowed. It is really tough to hold the kids without strollers.
Great museum. Huge! Theres a lot of unique things to see. We came here on free first Thursday. You have to go to the ticket counter and get a ticket even if its free. It was a little crowded. Time flies when youre in here. We spent around 3 hours in the museum. And thats without seeing the special exhibits. Restrooms were clean. There are water fountains near the restrooms if you get thirsty - I believe drinks are not allowed.
Awesome pre Raphaelite exhibition and permanent collection and a large quiet museum even on a Saturday. A real treat
I went for free at first Thursday. I recommend this free day. Took guided tour. First thing- political! Some tribe who lived there did not recieve money (what do I have to do with this info?!What do I owe to this people? Do you want to know about my hardship? They might owe me!) Second-political, sculpture -Japanese guy has red years because he is embarrassed of our President. Really?I want to see Art! I want to have professional person who can tell me interesting facts and info that inspire me, help my imagination, not your pitiful, twisted political thoughts that have no meaning, no value.Velazquez turned in his grave after this ... my subjective opinion.
Support your local art museums! There are fewer and fewer places to experience art from around the world these days. Most of the works are set and dont change but there is one large gallery that hosts a variety of things that change every 2-3 months. Its location lends itself well to exploring a good part of Seattle. If youre visiting I highly recommend coming to this area and seeing what catches your eye.
Ok I love art so its hard not to love the Seattle Art MuseumBut, how is it that in one of the highest value tech states there is no additional information accessible to viewers than a few videos here and there (three actually). The little cards about who donated or loaned the piece are simply not enough! (Give me a call SAM I have some ideas)And, Why in the great Pacific Northwest are the pieces of the First Nations jammed in the back?Other than that - wow what an experience of ART! Cant wait for the oKeefe show coming in 2020!
Wonderful Asian and Native American collections in addition to the expected European and American painting.
Museum is a great place for family. Only 3 levels so don’t worry about spending hours viewing art.
Beautiful permanent collection and exquisite temperature exhibits. Helpful and informative staff.
To me art is how I feel when I stare at the work of art. What pops up to my mind when I look at a picture, at a sculpture, How it makes me feel. In this opportunity I attended a flower sculpture exposition. They were like flower arrangements and at first grasp, the first sculpture remind me of my mother. I loved the exposition. You could smell the delicate fragrance of the flowers, which I think it is great when someone can interact with a piece of art, beyond looking at it. The artists show elegant and simple sculptures, delicate, and strong ones, adding thorns, for example. Then I saw Warhol and Basquiat, the Pop Culture and Studio 54 came to my mind, The Factory. Then Matisse. I do not know much about art but is great when you can see in person those pictures you see in books. Beside all that, the rooms for Greece, Egipt, Porcelain, and many others are worth it to visit. At the end you can stop by the Shop and buy a cool souvenir that makes you remember how good, cool, fantastic was your visit to The Seattle Museum of Art.
Absolutely stunning! The Victorian Radicals was oooooo so awesome!
I love this museum. It’s such a nice place to relax and reflect. A place to get away and get your creativity back.
A beautiful museum to be sure! Many eras and artists represented from around the world. The Native American art is some of the best I have seen.My only complaint would be that for many important artists, one piece was “enough” apparently. The facility is a donation only access, except for the current “Special” show which was too pricey for me considering it was a rather small retrospective of that particular artist.Nonetheless, this is a great place to visit, bring the kids and learn about some great artists and their work.
Beautiful space, friendly staff especially on free Thursday. Quiet a few people were about today.
Great museum. Nice permanent exhibit and an array of visiting art. Always a joy. One free day per month. Good discounts. No animals!!!!
Went on free day. Compact, not overwhelming, great variety. Little bit of everything. Good deal of modern and contemporary art and popular masters. Loved the Aboriginal artists on display.
We arrived later in the day and, being visitors from out of town, we had not planned for enough time to see everything. We did see a fantastic exhibit on Edward Curtis and I look forward to future exhibitions. Next time I hope to see more of their permanent collection. The parking situation is not ideal but the collection here is worth a visit!
Very nice! The flesh and blood exhibit was really cool. The rest was pretty cool, but I mostly wanted to see the paintings of people. The porcelain room is absolutely worth a look too.
Excellent cultured outing in downtown Seattle.
Oniric, colourfull and singular collection of sculpture s made from blown glass......allows one to reflect.
Spacious and beautiful exhibitions. We stayed for 3 hours and could have stayed 10 more!!
The works here are breathtaking. The staff were so informative and helpful during my visit. Left there knowing a great deal about art than what I did before. I knew theres things to learn about art history, but wow it really blew my mind coming here.
Great selection of work and beautiful building. Plenty of great places to eat around too. I would recommend taking public trans to get down there. Parking is not an issue if you are willing to spend the $$ at the garage. The Museum is also near the market and the perfect place to get some quiet away from the market/downtown hustle.
Excellent collection, both permanent and hosted
Great space, really good selection of art spanning all genres.
Loved our visit! From the moment you walk in and see the large hanging dissected tree the museum keeps you in awe. Very nicely curated, covering classic to modern art. Photography, paintings, fashion, sound just so many elements under one roof. During our visit there was an exhibit focused on empathy. Walking through and reading the lessons told through the pieces of art took us through a rollercoaster of questions and emotions. We really enjoyed it and the conversation it provoked. Excited to return and see future exhibits.
The goli mask of Kplekple is made of wood and pigment and is from the 20th century Baoule Tribe of the Ivory Coast. It is shown on the front album cover if Herbie Hancock Head Hunters Album from 1973.
Bit pricey but if you have bank of america, they do free museum days on the weekends. Worth the money if you do pay though. Multiple floors of beautiful art to stimulate your brain for a couple of hours.
Military are free so come on over and learn about the Pacific Northwest. The Asian exhibits were fantastic.
Gorgeously curated, friendly staff, amazing African and Northwest art displays, the museum chewed up my entire day. Definitely go and check out the Empathy Inc. exhibit!
Many beautiful pieces of art and this is just a sample.
