I absolutely loved this place in Sarasota although I feel that it is not advertised enough for people to visit it. Beautiful, unique grounds you can walk around. The Rose garden is amazing, the secret garden and the Banyan trees. A lot of outdoor sculptures and the Ca dZan it is a true piece of art. The museum of art is amazing (we spent over 3 hours just there). I visited in Jun and the Circus museum was closed for renovation, but I will definitely be back for it when opens. This is a MUST visit location in Florida.

Been going to Ca dZan and the Ringling estate for more than 40 years. Since the renovation, the place is exquisite, and being able to go up to the third floor and terrace up top are something we never used to be able to do. However it just feels like the place has been commercialized now. I like the way ticketing was years ago, and I remember exploring areas of the grounds with my son that are no longer accessible.

Absolutely in the top 10 best places I have ever visited. If you visit plan on spending at least 5 hours to see everything if your walking. They do have shuttle carts but we did not use them. I recommend doing the Johns Tour that gets you full access to the house and the museums. Take a lunch or eat before you go the onsite cafe is well not that greatest food on earth and way overpriced. The grounds are just amazing from the old status to the banyan trees the walk is awesome. Ca; dZan was amazing well worth the money. The art gallery even for a person like me that is not into art was amazing to see. I will definitely be back.

Costs $10 on top of the $25 circus museum / art museum admission to see the first floor. Upper floors cost more. Its interesting, but $10 for a self-guided, 10 minute walk-around without any signs identifying items or providing some background (because that would slow the pace), it just isnt worth it. (You will see the entryway, living room, dining room - with no table, kitchen, bar). If youve seen any other Guilded Age mansion, its the same. You can walk completely around outside (which is more interesting) for free.

Beautiful, unique grounds you can walk around without cover charge. Rose gardens, areas forested with Banyan trees, live oaks, and Bunya pines, a huge terrace overlooking the bay, all interwoven with outdoor sculptures. John and Mabel Ringling had a lot of wealth, but they didnt do the typical, stuffy art and architecture. It has the quirky, colorful, and lighthearted approach you might expect of a circus baron, yet generally still well done, not tacky. Inside the house and museum were great to see as well.

We did the self-guided tour of the first floor which was all the main highlights and more than enough information. The back patio is truly stunning and you can really admire the details on the exterior and the windows from here.Don’t miss visiting the museum so that you can watch the movie and see other wonderful artifacts.

Since we were time constrained, we only took the John tour. First off, the tour guide was a gem from Quebec, whose energy for the art of museum tour guiding was second to none. She spared no excitement for sharing the details of the tour, and that kept us captivated. As for the mansion, pretty awesome. This was a last minute trip to FL for other reasons, and I keep discovering awesome things about the South that I never knew, such as....there is a Ringling Mansion in Sarasota, FL. Cool architecture and interior furnishings. Next time, will add the Mable portion of the tour.

Saw the Asian collection today inside the green told building, and read how each tile was created: fascinating! The grounds are unparalleled! Even if you never step inside any of the building you can spend half the day walking around the many acres enjoying the rose garden, statuary and even the childrens playground. Ca dZan is a Venetian Gothic residence in Sarasota, Florida adjacent to the Sarasota Bay. The residence was the winter home of the American circus owner, developer and art collector John Ringling and his wife Mable Ringling. The Ringlings were lovers of the Venetian aesthetic and chose the site overlooking Sarasota Bay for its vista, which reminded them of the lagoon of their favorite city. The name of the residence is Venetian for House of John. The Ringlings had been renting the residence of Mary Louise and Charles N. Thompson on their extensive Shell Beach parcel, and decided to purchase some of the land to build a permanent winter headquarters that would include a residence on the bay and a museum for their extensive art and artifact collection. An art school was planned to abut the museum, but it never was built. Mables rose garden was the first completed portion of the complex. On April 18, 2012, the AIAs Florida Chapter placed Ca dZan, the Residence of John and Mable Ringling on its list, Florida Architecture: 100 Years. 100 Places.Architectural details of the house reflect influences ranging from the Venetian Doges Palace, Ca dOro and the Grunwald Hotel. Items collected by the couple during their international travels were featured in the residence. The design of the residence was commissioned from New York architect Dwight James Baum in 1924 and it was built by the Sarasota developer Owen Burns. The work was completed in 1926, as the Florida boom collapsed and the bank failures that would lead to the crash of 1929 began. The original cost to build the home was $1.5 million. In 1982 the residence was listed as a contributing property to the Caples-Ringlings Estates Historic District, which is on the National Register of Historic Places. Other contributing properties in the district include the Ellen and Ralph Caples residence, the John and Mable Ringling Museum, the Hester Ringling Lancaster Sandford residence and the Edith and Charles Ringling residence. The 1998 film Great Expectations, directed by Alfonso Cuarón, had portions filmed at Ca dZan, which served as Ms. Dinsmoors house, Paradiso Perduto. The residence was restored in 2002 under the direction of Bill Puig. Most details of the original construction and decoration were restored faithfully except some of the interior color schemes.

Very very disappointing! We drove 45 minutes to see Ca’ d’Zan, the crown jewel. The pricing and choices were complicated. We were four adults and two children. The last time I was there I went with my family, we walked to the house, purchased a ticket and waited a short time for the next tour to see this amazing house. I’m a reasonably educated person with a college degree but I must say it’s a challenge to figure out what program or set of things to see. All we wanted to see was the house. That’s not possible without first purchasing a general admission and then adding on another admission to the house. This got pricey for our group. The first floor of the house was available with a $10.00 per person “add on,” but we would have to wait until 3:00 pm. Not with kids. There were tours for an additional $40.00 per person but no availability that day because they were booked up. The clerk told us we could walk around outside the house and look in the windows. We ended up seeing a few interesting exhibits and having lunch at the museum. Beware the gratuity is added, but it’s only mentioned in the fine print after you get the bill. The campus is vast. It was 90 degrees outside and there seemed to be a shortage of trolleys so we had to walk in the heat, arriving soaked at the next building. Much of the exhibition area was closed in the art museum. The Belvedere of the house was closed would we have been lucky enough to get on a tour. None of the fountains or water features were operating. The art museum is free on Mondays and coincidentally we went on the right day for that. We still ended up paying $110.00 for four adults and two children while the art museum was free and we never got into the house or the glass museum. I was embarrassed to bring my out of town guests there and very sorry that we did not get to see the amazing and highly touted Ca’ d’Zan. We are just regular Museum goers. It was so disappointing that we did not get to see the main attraction, which is why we went there in the first place.

Review №66

A must see if you are a museum and history buff like my wife and I! After paying the initial $25 per person for the Ringling museum and museum of art you can pay $10 for a first floor self tour of the Ca dZan. Make sure to give yourself 5+ hours to tour the museums and grounds. The house itself is beautiful on the outside but the inside is where the history is. You are provided with a pamphlet which leads you through the magnificent rooms of this home. No photos are allowed inside. You can see how lavishly the Ringlings lived and the care and touch which went into building a home like this in 1926 at a cost of $1.6 million THEN. Well worth the $10 but you can spend more if you want to see the other floors or want a narrated tour.
