Probably the most popular trailhead in the county. Small with not much room to park.4 or 5 vehicles max. Dont park behind the no parking signs. If you do you are risking this trailheads closure. There is parking nearby on the street if the trailhead is full..Mask compliance on the trail is moderate but is improving. The trail to Sun Mountain summit is short, strenuous, and rocky. Lots of social trails but they all lead to the same place. From the summit there is access to endless trails in the Dale Ball system.
This is not a loop trail its an up and down trail. Its moderately challenging. Its steep and rocky switchbacks for a lot of it. Youll know youve reached the top when your looking over the St. Johns campus. Theres plenty of space up top to have a picnic for several groups. I encountered numerous people with their dogs off leash so be ready for that.
Great hiking trail that runs straight up the mountain. Some loose, slippery gravel and some rocks to climb, but overall it was pretty easy. My husband and I are out of shape and we took a few breaks on our way up, it took us about an hour to hike to the top. The view is great. Also there are quartz veins everywhere with beautiful pink and purple striations.
Moderate with plenty of uphill but overall a short and sweet hike.
Gorgeous Hike up to Pride Rock on top!
Beautiful, steep!
Great trail for a quick, short uphill hike
Fun quick hike up. Lovely view. You can keep going and connect to a lot of other trails once you reach the top of Sun Mountain.
Beautiful view. I had read that this trail was rated as easy to moderate but that is not how I experienced it. Then grade becomes much more steep and difficult about half way up. For those in terrific physical condition it might be considered easy. The view from up there is fantastic though!
Nice little hike with cool views
Great hike with wonderful views.
Great views and a decent hike. It has been pretty busy both times weve gone though so that takes away from it a bit.
Great hike, beautiful vistas, steep in places but worth your effort!
Awesome short trail near santa fe. Sick sun set views from the top of sun mountain.
Awesome and fun hike. Great way to spend an hour
The Sun Mountain trail head is right off Old Santa Fe Trail. Parking is available along the street. Be sure to lock your car. The trail is well used and takes hikers up to the crest of Sun Mountain where the view of the city stretches south all the way to the Sandia Mountains. This is a short moderately challenging hike. If you like working on a stair climber, this is a great daily hike. At the top, the trails connect across the peaks to Moon Mountain and the well traveled Atalaya Mountain trail. After hiking, follow Old Santa Fe Trail all the way to the intersection with Paseo De Peralta where you will find Cowboy Coffee. Have a cup.
Good place to have some RandR
Not bad, kinda busy
Fantastic short trail, just make sure youve got the knees.
Veri good
Neat view of the city
Like the sign says, hide your valuables. There were suspicious looking people walking back and forth past the parked cars. They wouldnt smile when I took their picture.
