Amazing surrounding views from the top of the peak. The ocean from the west, Black Mountain and La Jolla from the south and south-west. San Marcos, Escondido. Just Wow! They have a unique playground made of rocks. A telescope free to use and trail heads. A very beautiful and unique peak.
I just discovered this spot and Ill definitely come back. It was way more impressive than I expected. Theres are two parking lots close by. The first one you see (on your left heading uphill) is a bit of a hike to the top, but nothing extreme. Theres another one just by the top but parking can be a bit more difficult to find. This is the tallest hill in the area and theres a 360 degree telescope that lets you look around the vast expanse below. This is a must see when visiting San Marcos area. Its only a few minutes drive from CSUSM and gets you a beautiful sunset view.
Plenty of parking, Beautiful view, a few benches and picnic tables to sit at to watch the sunset, it got pretty crowded closer to sunset, if you want to sit down on a bench or picnic table to enjoy a meal and watch the sunset I would recommend getting there an hour before sunset to secure a spot to sit! (you can also watch the sunset and enjoy the view from your car, but once again must get there earlier to secure a good parking spot facing the sunset view )
The difficulty rating of the trails at Double Peak Park varies significantly due to your ability to create your own path. This is because the main trails cross with each other or more often the smaller connecting trails and switchbacks do. That being said, you will not escape inclines/declines. I personally feel these trails are moderate, but if this is your first trail hike you may find yourself taxed. Small children will likely find the trails at Doubles Peak very difficult.
Easy access, can drive or hike to the top (hike can be simple along the road or a little more of a challenge on the true trail).
One of the best spots to see the sunset. Make sure you come a little before sunset to get a parking spot here.
Beautiful hiking place! It is a 4 miles hike from the street up to the peak. Moderate hike, most trails are partially pave. lots of hikers and bikers. You can bring your dog but make sure to be on a leash at all times. Its over 1000 ft. to the top of the hill. Once youre up there, enjoy the scenery of the town. Stunning view from the top! Depends what time of the day you go hiking just make sure to bring a lot of water. There is also a picnic area where can enjoy the view of the ocean and the valley below. So, if you have not been there and you love to hike, go and explore. Bring a snack and your camera! Have fun!
Best place for short hikes, family sight seeing, dates, or intense hill runs or workouts. Great walk area, great sights. Can see all the way to the ocean, and even Mexico border on sunny days. Great place to eat or just sit in your car.
Tips: If you are planning to hike this, start out at Lakeview Park so dont put Double Peak Trails on your GPS. Also, its pretty steep so walking back down can be slippery with loose gravel. Wear good shoes!
Always a crowd pleaser. I recommend having a picnic while youre up here to maximize your time spent.
Pretty easy hike the end of it is pretty steep going up a road through some houses but the park at the top is nice
Beautiful place, well kept, an amazing place to hike. Its just long enough, if you get there at 0530, you can be easily finished by 0700 and itll brighten up the rest of your day.
If seeing sites is your passion Double Peak Park gives you 360 view of Southern California very beautiful on a clear day
Highly recommend it. Near 360° View of all north county. Sunsets is beautiful under ideal conditions.
Awesome views. Theyre even better after a fresh rain. Covid didnt close the free public telescope either.
Double Peak Park has the most beautiful view! As you stand at the top of the trail thered is a circular map that explains the view from where you are standing all around you. Poetry in stone was a surprise. A most serene place, with a nice breeze. In our increasingly urban world its hard to find a place without noise pollution, just simple quietude! Thank you Lowell for showing us this place!
If you want a 360 view of the area Double Peak is a great place to go. Take your out of town guests here first
Great place to hike with nice views of the san marcos area
Great uphill run, breathtaking views in the morning. Clean well kept trail and not too packed in the AM. Highly recommended.
Beautiful views. Its a nice place to relax.
March 2018 - An amazing place! The heart-quickening views from this awe-inspiring peak are spectacular to say the least. Southern California is a diverse place, socially and geographically, and one glance down from Double Peak is a perfect illustration of this truth. The rolling mountainous landscape tapers to foothills as the Pacific Ocean meets the coast - all wonderfully visible from this perch. At 7am, I was standing beneath the single tree on top of Double Peak enjoying the sunrise, and at 7:30am I was having breakfast on the beach! Who could ask for more?! Additionally, the Double Peak trails offer moderate to challenging treks. The drive up to and down from Double Peak intensifies the exhilaration of the overall experience while visiting this San Marcos treasure! Thank you to the San Marcos community for providing the opportunity to share in the natural beauty of this place! Always looking forward to my next visit! If you like this review, let me know with a thumbs up :)
Its nice, theres ton of trails up there that me and my friends ride all the time, there all steeper techy trails if you are into that.
Love this place!! The view is Gggrrreaaat
Beautiful views, wish it was open after dark for star gazing. (Open dawn to dusk)Bathrooms and ample parking.
Nice view and yuo fill good went yuo walking to ther from discovery lake

Great 360 view of entire San Diego on a clear day! You can drive all the way up and park your car..its a short walk to the peak.. breathtaking view
Double peak park makes for some incredible views.
Really great workout if you hike up.
Gorgeous views. Great hiking trails. But at the peak itself, too crowded. Cute lil playground (closed for COVID)
Spectacular view!Small and steep! Small parking lot and the trail starts in the residential area...just follow the signs, this trail is well maintained and It has a wonderful view...unfortunately we got there late I was expecting to have a sunrise hike️
A beautiful spot for 360° panaoramic views of San Marcos and surrounding areas in north San Diego County. You can park down below at the park entrance and hike up to the top for a great cardio workout too!
Great incline hike. Even my nine year old did it.The earlier the better because youll start feeling the heat. The view is beautiful!!
Best view in North County. Hiking up is a bit of a challenge but there is parking at the top for those that aren’t up for the exertion. 360 degree views of the mountains and ocean are amazing.
Beautiful place just to look down at the city of San Marcos
Love, love, love this place!! Amazing views!! Park clean and beautiful!! With many hiking and biking trails!! I took all my friends there, who came to visiting!! Strongly recommend to visit!!
One of my favorite hiking places to go!
Nice and easy walk
Great for sunsets and sunrise, good little hike
This is a gorgeous viewpoint off San Elijo Road. Perfect place for a picnic, hike, or to watch the sunset. You can see San Elijo Lagoon and Lake San Marcos.
Beautiful views!! Loved it
Watch me fly down the hill at 51mph back into San Marcos! Double Peaks Cycling-rauchin1 on YouTube.
Very Clean location and the view is breathtaking.
Good place to look out. You can see into the ocean and about 50 miles in any directions. There are come trails which are nice to walk through but are steep in some parts. Over all beautiful view. Its never too crowded when I have gone. But the only downside is the open and closed times, aswell as weather. If you go, go on a clear day.
Amazing and beautiful view. 10/10 would reccomend.
I love this place it’s so much fun walking around helps me to get fitted
What a gorgeous view. I love this Trail because its the perfect Trail for any type of hiker. If you decide to start all the way at Discovery Lake theres a pretty Advanced hike that you can do that takes you through a lot of steep Terrain in some valleys and then eventually to the top. Theres also an intermediate Trail they can be reached on the back side of the mountain there is also a way to drive to the top so that if youre not much of a hiker you can definitely still get the gorgeous view and access all that the double Peaks have to offer.
I love the view from here. you can see as far as the border with mexico and up to LA and Catalina Island. its a great place to finish a hike before the sunset . there is also a small park for kids ... and its a dog friendly park.
Great place to go for a lookout point for North county but you can see all the way to downtown San Diego and over to the mountains East and the Coronado islands and Catalina. This is when going on a clear day. Some good hiking trails from up top and easy access parking.
Toy can see most of North county
Amazing views from the top. Well worth the effort to hike from Discovery Lake to Double Peak Park.
Great to climb up this slope at least 3x a week. We do it Mon, Wed and Sat at around 8 am and we will back down in 2 hrs from Foxhall.
Nice place for sunset photos
Great views of North County San Diego and beyond.
Love doing small road trips from my home. Great atmosphere for a quick chat with the best friend, as well as hike with the small dogs.
Breathtaking views. Bring the family and enjoy the view or take a hike. Enjoy!
Absolutely wonderful! Well-maintained trails, benches, picnic tables, restroom facilities, a small outdoor amphitheatre, and more. All located on top of the world, above the clouds, with gorgeous views east to Escondido and west to the Pacific Ocean. You cant help but love this special place.
Great view all around. Awesome place to watch the sunset. Fun triple seesaw.
Simply amazing views from this park. Great place to catch a sunset.
Start at the lake, don’t follow the map when you type in double peak. If you start at the lake and hike up to the peak and back around it’s about 4 miles. It’s an easy hike, it wasn’t strenuous. The trails are maintained and big to bring strollers and run. Good hike to train.
Great views. It is nice to have a restroom, water, a place to sit and shade after a hike up to the peak. free parking for those who drive up.
Awesome views all around
Drive or hike to the overlook with a telescope, a small rock climbing/obstacle course, restrooms and picnic tables. Great hike from discovery lake or walk from the telescope out to the point and back. Both have great views.
Great park, fun for kids. Climbing rocks, see-saw, and beautiful views
Love it the view my daughter love it too.
Amazing views, a must do when youre in the area
Beautiful place to watch the sunrise.
Great view pretty steep hill for beginners but only a two mile hike to the top. Highly recommend going early in the morning or sunset times
Awesome place to hang out and it was super cool to watch the sunset here.
Typical casino... Nothing new!
1,675 feet up so quiet and beautiful
I love hiking to this spot from Discovery Lake.
The view is mesmerizing
Stunning views in all directions! Beautiful sunsets!
For when you just wanna get above it all.
Hike or drive up to this mountain with a 360 view as far as the eye can see. Picnic table and access to a telescope. Bathrooms, handicap accessible and a picturesque view while picnicking.
It is not the destination, it is all about the journey - especially if you bring about your trusty two-wheeled companion. Excellent challenging climb and breathtaking 360-view. Literally breathtaking for youd probably be happy for an excuse to get your breathing and heartbeat stabilized after tacking the ascent.
Beautiful park with majestic views in San Marcos
Views trails pet friendly

360 view of Noth County and beach view...great hike...
We went to this park at 11am on Memorial Day and there was plenty of parking at the top. Seems like most people parked down the road then hiked to the top. There is a bathroom at the parking lot. It wasnt crowded at all; there are maybe 7 or so picnic tables and only about half of them were occupied in a little over an hour we were there.
One of the best 360 views in all of North County.
Awesome place to hike with gorgeous views! Great place to see fireworks on July 4th if the sky is clear, you can see five to six different fireworks displays from all around you.
Fantastic view. The hike up from Discovery Lake is a killer. The road bike climb is also a killer, it gets really steep at the end, and coming down the road is really off camber on the steepest section. Take care.
Beautiful views! Lots of trail options. Limited parking. Best to go early morning or anytime in cooler weather
Nice and clean, a lot of peace
It was beautiful!
Nice to just sit and relax above everything else.
Gorgeous 360 view!
Absolutely beautiful anytime of day, but sunsets are my favorite!
