Trails around Mt Umunhum have been a great pleasure. The views from the top are wonderful. One can drive all they way up to the top - a real blessing for our aging parents. The peak gets a smattering of snow in the winter. The trails have ample shade - which is helpful in the summer time. Facilities and trail upkeep have been getting better.

Unlike most mountain top radio sites, this one has paved roads and a parking lot at the top. You can reach it in an ordinary passenger car - no 4WD needed. The large concrete building is one of the old SAGE RADAR sites from the cold war. I sure hope to see it as a museum someday since it is historically significant.

The best place to mountain bike locally. Trails are well maintained and fun to ride. There are parking spaces most of the time. Specially Saturday afternoons!People flock to this park, however, you still feel pretty isolated because the trails are so long that you encounter people sparsely. It feels this way anyway. Also l, part of the trial runs along Calero lake and it has a very nice view. Go here and check it out for yourself! You wont regret it.The only problem I see here is that the parts of the trail are very narrow. So riding fast is a bit dangerous . Other than that, the best place to ride.

Very scenic with a lovely view. I was crazy enough to unicycle down which was great fun until I had to half walk - half ride back up as the incline was decently steep — less fun but a fantastic workout nonetheless. An excellent trail for both a stroll for the view or a jog.

I had a lot of fun there. There is only one set of bathrooms in the bottom parking lot area. I did not notice any garbage cans around so you must pack out your trash bring water as I did not notice any water fountains either. The views are beautiful and the air has a great smell to it. It was not very crowded today in fact I had the whole Mountain to myself for a short time. I would definitely recommend packing a lunch and bring plenty of cold beverages so you can spend some time there and really enjoy the views.

Sierra Azul has many entrances. I begin at kennedy/top of the hill roads in Los gatos. I have a private parking spot of my own (just kidding!!) across from the parks parking area which os limited parking. Its a great place for a hike to the top (4.1 mi. of steep hills one way but once i hiked 14 mi to limekiln and priest returning back). My biggest complaint is the speed the bikers go...way too fast. I always give them the right of way or else I will get run over. Dogs should be on leash but theyre not. I wish people would obey park rules. People can be so rude. Sigh... Its one of my favorite places; I go quite often even in the heat... A very very nice place to get away from noise. Thank you midpen for all these beautiful trails and for keeping us safe!!

Hiked from Kennedy Rd trail head to Mount Um. Trail conditions were good. It is a rigorous 15 miles (one way) with appreciable elevation gain. Bring snacks and a lot of water. It is fairly exposed for much of the trail until Woods and the Mt Um portion of the trail. Spectacular views along the way. If you dont want to hike all the way to Um, you can join Priest Rock or Lime Kiln trails or just hike up to the top where Priest Rock intersects and back (from Kennedy). Lots of options. You can hike from Alma Bridge road as well. Hike as long or short as you like. Bikes share the trails. One of my favorite local trail system.

Having been a regular at nearby Almaden Quicksilver Park and other parts of the Sierra Azul open space preserve for years, I was excited to finally get to the top of Mt. Umunhum, and the hiking and views are truly unique in this area. The former base has freshly built day facilities and a lot of area that is in the process of restoration to its natural state.Going to to Umunhum is a long drive up a narrow mountain road with no facilities - prepare properly with a full tank of gas, snacks and water. Today was opening day Sunday, and there was a fair amount of traffic, cars, motorcycles, cyclists, trucks, etc, so keep that in mind as well. But the trip is completely worth it - few areas are both as close to the valley as well as topping 3400 ft, and on a clear day, we could see Santa Cruz, Big Basin, Mt. Tamalpias, Mt. Hamilton, and Morgan Hill, just with a short walk around the top of the mountain. One last note, the Rangers on duty today were super-friendly, doing their best to mitigate the huge crowds on the road, and offering advice on how to best enjoy our visit.

Ive youre looking for a cardio workout, look no further. Take the trail opposite LGRC and start the ascent. If and when you get to the top of the main trail, you can go another mile and drop back out the lower Lime Kiln trail. If your a hardy sort, go right at the cross roads and go up till you meet the top of the Kennedy trail. Its a truly religious expirience coming down. 13-16 mile loop that will kick most folks rumps. Ive done all of it on foot and MB. The hiking part give you much more time to examine the different flora in the area. Every season is a bit different in terms of wildflowers. Carry water, there are stream crossings but I dont trust the surface water. Too many deer and such. If you go in the summer, go early. It can be a roaster up there!
