The Main Post is the heart of the Presidio. It marks the site of a Spanish garrison established here in 1776. This historic site served as a Spanish fortification, then fell under Mexican control, and finally became an important U.S. Army post in 1847.First stop should be the modern Visitors Center (north side of the main square) and the amazing free museum in the Officers Club (south side) which also houses the oldest buildings in the Presidio dating from Spanish rule.(The Presidio unit also technically includes Batteries East and West, Crissy Field, Fort Point, Fort Winfield Scott, Letterman Hospital Complex, San Francisco National Cemetery, Pet Cemetery and World War II Memorial).
Fantastic park accessories with the Walt Disney Family museum. Lots of scenic hikes and walks. Militarily, a throwback to the era when coastal artillery mattered.
