Good selection of small, beautiful fish. Their fish prices are slightly above reasonable, but their driftwood etc is astronomically high! They wanted like $30 for a 1 diameter forked branch about 13 long! The store is clean and nice, but the decor is NOT cheap. Their fish ARE healthy and I still have 2 clown loaches from last year.
Highly recommend!! These guys are amazing, havent had a issue whatsoever. Very quick shipping and always packed with care. Always stocked with things hard to find outside of japan.
This store is amazing! They arent cheap, but they have a large variety of fish and shrimp, not to mention plants by the ton. They also have rocks and wood for aquascaping, which is their business.I have a pair of clown loaches that I got a year ago and they are very healthy and have worked well.
Great Store a must visit if you are in the area. However, they falsely claimed to have free shipping on their website, and ignored my inquiry despite after two orders over $350. Im a bit disappointed, and hence this review.
This place is so great! I keep going back but sometimes the ppl in there r kinda weird or creepy or yell at u... anyways, I love it and I enjoy looking at the sharks and fish and jellyfish and they have a touch aquarium for the kids .
Have never been in store, but as an online customer theyre great. They have all the ADA stuff youd want. In addition their pricing, and shipping speed is amazing. Im extremely pleased with their service. AFA has become my new store to shop for aquarium supplies.
Amazing store, some of the rarest products in America! I’m only buying from AFA moving forward, their customer service is elite
I would say I would recommend because of the service provided by a second individual to my son as he spend $40 on plants and the quality of plants and livestock but, if I could rate the individual that I asked a question about fish I wouldn’t. Service is the first thing I always notice and it’s really what make the difference if you’ll come back, mind you we had traveled about 50 miles to visit this place. They have a system on their tanks of “checks” and “x” that they don’t seem to use well and suppose to help you figure out if fish are in stock or not, specially those that are high enough and unable to clearly see the livestock. So that prompt me to asked a question about a particular fish and the response I got from the second store employee was like I was bothering him or wasting his time. Hopefully that employees like him remember that we all support one another one by buying and the other by providing a service, I wish I would have ask for his name, tall fellow for sure.
I really love this place. As a first time aquarium owner it felt so good to go to a nice, clean, healthy environment and not feel shy and made to feel ashamed for newbie questions. They taught me how to keep my tank safe and keep my fish, live plants and african dwarf frogs alive. I love that they will not sell you companions that they have not assured is healthy just to make a buck. I love just spending an hour looking around and learning from the customer interactions.
Dont let the fact that they sell high end products fool you into thinking everything is over-priced. Not everything is marked up. Admittedly there are some things in the store that makes you think what?! you cant be serious. But for most items the prices are fair (some things like plants are even cheaper than online), and the quality is above average. I have been to almost all of the available fish stores on the peninsula, and no one else has come close to the number of cool stuff this store offers. I have always been a pragmatic person when it comes to tools. My philosophy is that if the tool does the job, then theres really no need to buy the brand name ones. But I will admit that while eBay/Amazon aquarium tools will work just fine, the quality and feel of using a set of high end aquarium tools is definitely worth the extra money. But most of all the pride of ownership in owning high end tools, a well made aquarium, and stocking it with the best plants makes it worthwhile. Do it once, do it right, and enjoy the process. If you are remotely serious about this hobby, you should do yourself a favor and pay them a visit.
Best aquarium shop in SF: clean high tec, courteous service, healthy fish
Probably the most beautiful aquarium supply store Ive been in. Even their tanks with the fish for sale are set up nicely. I was out in Santa Clara for a work trip and drove up specifically to visit this store... And was not disappointed. If youre looking for Aquascaping supplies... Inspiration... Or just to see a really cool store... This is the place to go.Ive been a customer online for about 2 years now and the quality of their plants and other scaping supplies are top notch.
This and Aqua labs in the South bay are the best places to get your planted tank materials. Also, they have a large variety and good rotation of nano tank fish. Hobbyists from out of town go out of their way to visit .
Haven’t ever been to the store but as an international customer I was helped via email to find the right light for my aquarium. The customer service I received was wonderful. I hope one day I get to visit in person and say thank you.
Small well kept shop selling high quality aquarium supplies and healthy live stock. Ive been in several times over the last few months, and I never see dead fish in the tanks. I recently bought a few plants there with plans to supplement with some less expensive ones from somewhere else, but the other places I visited had such sad looking plants that I came back for the rest. Im happy to spend a few extra dollars for a plant that has every chance of thriving. The staff are a bit shy, but know all the things if you find them and ask.
Great online shopping experience! Place looms even cooler in person LOL
Great aquarium shop. Probably one of the best in North America. They carry some hard to find materials for the avid aquarist. I wish I lived closer so i wouldnt have to buy most things online. Thay have a great stock of rocks, substrate, co2 equipment, driftwood, and fish. Definitely check them out if youre in the hobby or thinking about getting into it it.
Absolutely amazing store, best selection of healthy plants and fish around, including many harder to find species. Landmark for ADA / aquascaping fans. Friendly and knowledgeable staff. I stop by here every time in the area and buy supplies here instead of big box or online. Ive been in the hobby for over 20 years and this ranks as one of the best aquarium stores Ive ever visited. The only con I can think of is its not right next to my house.
Amazing aquascape store in the heart of SF! Prices reasonable and the healthiest aqua flora and fuana I have ever seen.
Nice selection of aquarium plants and freshwater fish. Friendly and knowledgeable staff. Great location in Japantown and parking garage!
Probably the best fish store in the city. Good selection of fish, plants and equipment.
Very knowledgeable, friendly, and overall great staff. They have great quality products with competitive prices to go with it. If you’re looking to do a new tank as a beginner or even as an advance hobbyist, these guys are the guys for you! I highly recommend them
Friendly and knowledgeable staff. Great selection of plants and materials to setup a living aquarium.
Great local place for aquarium supplies.
If you want aquarium plants, look no further.
Cleanest, most beautiful tanks... healthiest, happiest fish, and all very affordable. Staff are always very polite and helpful. Love coming to this place just to browse sometimes for the calm ad beauty.
Hardware prices are very high but such is life in SF. That said, they deal in quality gear and livestock prices are fair. Pricing aside, they have the best variety Ive seen, are quite knowledgeable and friendly and they keep the store and aquariums very nice and clean. If youre considering getting into the beautiful art of planted aquariums, this is the place!
One of the best aquarium stores I have ever been to. Very helpful staff and great selection of plants. Any time I visit the Bay Area now I will have to stop off to visit this store.
Best aquascaping store I have ever seen. Beautiful tanks and great selection of fish.
I should have walked out when my cheerful Hello! was ignored not once, but twice. Instead, I stood there, smiling and waiting for service, which came...eventually...and with no eye contact and zero care. Its been years since I kept a betta fish, and the Internet offers bad info for free, so I asked a real, live aquarium sales agent for advice setting up a tank for a betta. Second red flag: the sales agent was screwed up his face when I said I would buy a fish only after I set up my tank properly. After answering my questions partially, he rushed me to checkout and unloaded his exasperation when I noticed hed prepared the wrong plant for me. His grunts and eyerolls subsided, I paid $50 for overpriced rocks (I knew that at the time), the wrong drops, and the *right* plant...that would rot in three days. When I called to request a refund for only half what Id bought, the same agent whod helped me scoffed, We dont do that, offering the water-tight reason, Youve already used the stuff, that stuff being the wrong drops and the plant that died. When I reiterated that Id asked for basic advice, he countered, People usually do research before buying. Translation: AFA sells live animals to unsafe environments, they know it, and they dont care.I strive to shop only local and small, but AFA is why big box keeps winning. Good thing I insisted on not buying a fish yet, or it would have died with the plant. AFA is off my list. Now shopping from Lucky and Ocean.
Happy to go here ! Also a great place to get CO2 for your plants.
Very knowledgeable staff and great place for all your Aquarium needs...prices are good too
The only real aquascaping store I can find in the bay area. ADA equipment and tanks on hand, good selections of invitro plants, aqua soil and hard scape materials. Highly recommend.
So nice here. It’s hard to find an aquarium shop these days, let alone a high quality aquarium shop. It’s a great place to get inspiration or advise for your next planted aquarium.
One of a kind aquarium shop with setups to dream of. Best products, commensurate prices.
One of the best local aquarium stores you can visit. Beautiful, simple, and has everything you need. If you want to see beautiful aquascapes or get tools to get the job done, this is a store you need to visit. All the fish are reasonably price and so are the dry goods. The store cares about the fish they sell and it clearly shows by the way they display and house the fish. I love it!My favorite is the gold severum they have in the back thats been there for years. The staff are kind and the customers are friendly. Support our local fish stores!
Beautiful fish but just realized I was over charged last week, should have paid better attention, 3 plants $3.99 ea -$1.50 ea plus tax doesnt add up to $24. Ill pay better attention next time, lesson learned. The set ups are awesome, saw that I can get substrate by the pound, I will be back, Ill bring my receipt just incase they still have the plants.
Aqua Forest Aquarium is a really nicely laid out store with lots of variety, planted tank displays, and knowledgeable staff. If youre looking to set up a tank or get more fish, this is the place to go!
Very cool fish tanks. High quality aquarium equipment, fish, shrimp, snails, substrate, etc.
The best of the bestAFA is used exclusively by myself and I recommend these guys to every client/customer/friend I do setups for. The staff is extremely knowledgeable. Customer service is truly outstanding, other stores should really look to these guys as a role model.I recently encountered a shipping issue with the United States Postal Service(no surprise there) with an order of aquasoil, and the brothers(owners) diagnosed the error and corrected the problem by immediately sending me out a replacement.I frequent Cali but I now live on the other side of the united states and will absolutely not use any other company for my aquarium needs/supplies.Keep up the good work gentlemen, the passion you guys display will always keep the customers coming back. Thanks,Satisfied retail customer.
Bottom Line: High quality products, considerate customer service. Had a fairly large order from this store on their online site. Excellent quality tank, light fixture and other supplies for planted aquariums all packaged carefully. There was a minor mistake with my order, but they responded immediately and got back to me and then quickly shipped the item to remedy the situation. I hope they keep stocking quality aquarium products and maintain their good customer service. Will shop here again.
I get my co2 here. Hardly ever have to wait. They just exchange the bottle I bought here. Very cool aquariums, lots of plant life. It would be cool to get into that.
Beautiful store. Very clean. High prices in comparison to the place on Clement, but hey, thats Fillmore street for you and this place is also much neater.
Spectacular examples of beautiful aquariums. They often have really great fish, especially fancy goldfish. Good selection of plants.
Very nice store with a good selection of small fish and plants.
Great place strong fish store
My favorite place 4 underwater tank supplies
There aquascapes themselves were lacking if you ask me . The hardscape materialsand plants were amazing tho. Fish selection. Was 5/10 overall good store for all your scaping needs
Its a good place to get help and advice and get a few things for your tank if you have one.Still love this place....and this is my aquarium 1 year later...with a little bit of good honest advice from Josh
Great selection of plants and fish. Fantastic display tanks
Great Aquarium supply and livestock store. My favorite items here are the crypts, Anubias, stem plants, and tetras. Staff is always alert and helpful! 10 out of 5 stars!
Place is neat and well maintained. Fish looked to be in good condition for the most part...dont recall seeing any ill fish on my visit.Prices are a bit high, but the plant selection is nice here.
Amazing store for planted aquariums. All the staff know what theyre doing, and they made excellent suggestions for me when I showed them tanks I wanted to sort of recreate with a high light nano. Three times now.
Great local store with knowledgeable staff and a great selection of budget and high end aquarium equipment.
A small shop, but with gorgeous tanks and a friendly, helpful, enthusiastic staff. They have an impressive selection of plants and a fair choice of fish and other animals to choose from. All their stocks look happy and healthy; all the fish are active and there are hardly ever sick or dead ones. Theres also a small selection of fish and aquascaping books, which are a nice touch. Theres a large inventory of ADA and do!Aqua equipment, as well as general aquarium cosmetics and upkeep products.Their display tanks are worth a visit on their own, just to appreciate them.
My favorite Fish Store in San Francisco. Its hit and miss with friendliness though. They have all the things you want, but wont always sell them to you, when its the best in stock. The store itself is addicting, its hard to not come back to see whats new.
Ive ordered one day shipping for my plants here. They always come really well packaged in a neat aluminum baggy. They also have a lot of uncommon plants.Okay. So I ordered UPS Second Day Air...when it didnt ship the first two days I emailed them asking if I could upgrade my shipping for a fee or delay it as I had to leave soon....no reply for another two days... they finally shipped it and itll arrive the day I go out of town for two weeks. Their support could use some work. Online ordering usually gets my items shipped the next day, but they dropped the ball on this one.
Very clean, fish treated with respect. Very professional.
Really cool store for planted tank enthusiasts. I went there for wood & rock for a non-planted Ciclid tank. A piece of cool twisted wood was $35, and two rocks were $10 each. Quite the mark-up for something mother nature provides for free. Ill stop by again to look at the nice tanks, but probably wont buy anything as its $$$$.
Great place to come and check out fish (even some rare fish) and marine plants. Very knowledgeable and helpful folks!
It is ok but too expensive
The best aquarium in SF hands down!!! The shop is run by a Taiwanese family. Wonderful staff with helpful tips, they are always friendly however it does get busy during weekends due to the fact that it is a somewhat small store and the only ADA supplier I know. Overall, it is still the best in SF, the fish are healthy, and has the most selections of ada products.
Excellent high class aquarium supplies and fish. Rare fish as well. Pricey but the tanks look absolutely stunning
First rate product, third rate serviceADA products are expensive but worth every penny. However this stores service make buying ADA products an nightmareIf you buy from this store do expect:- Products bought here might not be returned or refunded, especially true if opened- Orders online sitting for weeks- Message sent from their website ignored
The fish tanks are amazing
Best aquarium store in SF!
Step into a new dimension
Beautiful lush freshwater planted aquariums. Gave me some snails for free!
Beautiful aquascapes and a nice variety of fish and plants.
I just started going here, and now it is the only place I will go to buy anything aquarium-related! The plants and fish here are beautiful and healthy because the owners are meticulous and dedicated to their hobby.
I buy all my ADA from this store as well from AFA website. Great communication, awesome selection and perfect plants. Keep up the great work, and the inspiration to create art.
They say they open at 11am, but that’s not true. They apparently will open only when they feel like it.
The Most Beautiful tanks ever
AFA always has the best plants and their livestock selection is amazing. Its also one of the few places to buy ADA goods in store.
Beautiful aquariums, healthy fish, gorgeous plants and and high quality equipment. However the staff was extremely pretensious especially the younger employee. Will not be going back
This place has the most beautiful aquascapes. Employees are very helpful for selecting different fish and plants.
Ever hear about that phenomenon in Japan where it is apparently popular to have aquariums that reflect above ground landscapes? Imagine forests, or grassy hills growing in a fish tank. With little fish swimming in it as well. Kind of trippy in a good way! See youtube if you havent, but this aquarium gives you a taste of that!
The best ADA store in the USA. The owner Steven and George is very friendly.
Lovely storefront with unique aqua-scapes. Unfortunately, they take better care of their aquarium displays than their own customers. I placed an order for a large ticket item through their online store but there was a mishap (not on my end) and Steven Lo (one of the owners at AFA) was very hard to work/deal with. It has been two month and I have yet to receive a refund for a large ticket item I never received. Steven is a master at spotty communication and dodgy excuses.ONLINE BUYER BEWARE.I was a loyal customer for many years up to this point. But because of the owners shady business practices I will no longer do business with them in the future.
This place is responsible for making some of the most beautiful aquascape aquariums I have ever seen. The staff are very helpful and know everything about how to take care fresh water fish and aquariums.
Great variety of underwater gardens and fish
Good but not amazing planted tanks. By far the best in the city though.
Nice store with beautiful display tanks. Also carries a lot of other brands than ADA.
They might be ok at the store but DONT buy anything from their online store. They wont get back to you for weeks for even urgent problems. - 3 years of experience with this store.
Got my credit card info stolen and charged over $600 stuff but I never shopped there
Fast shipping....a bit pricey
On of my favorite places to go to.
This place is unique and exciting to visit
Helpful, staff, beautiful displays.
Good quality fish
If youve only ever been to old-school pet stores, full of sad, barren-looking fish tanks, you owe it yourself to check out the full-of-life aquascapes at Aqua Forest Aquarium.
Highest quality of aquatic plants and fish in San Francisco.
They are experts
Helpful people
Cool aquariums
