Beware, google maps will point you to the wrong location. The Preserve is East of 85 on high rock lake. Google maps pointed me to a single lane gravel road (will black rd) on the west side of Salisbury.
Great place for a trail run, we love family hikes here. If youre one of the people who left a bad review for this place and others, yes bring your bug repellent anywhere you go to hike, yes take a photo of the map sign if you have no sense of security direction, and absolutely there will be roots, dirt, and trees - this is for any hiking in a 200 mile radius of ROCO. Youre welcome.
The wife and I took the dog and hoped to find a scenic walk like wed seen in photos. There is a map posted at the parking lot of the various trails. I wish we had thought to take a photo of the map, as there are no copies available. After getting underway we were unclear as to trail choices, and our entire morning could be summarized by this: Thirty minutes of walking in a tunnel of trees, followed by five minutes of lake view. Oh, and dont forget the Off repellant.
As a launch for kayaking. A beautiful pristine cove.I havent visited the site since 2005, when a kayaking group I belonged to used it as a take out point The kayak trail is marked a little better and they have a cable system to aide in trolleying your kayak to and from the water. While the idea of the trolley was a good one and possibly workable with kayak that weigh around 40 pounds.... it didnt work for the 67 lb Pescador and 90 lb Native 14.5. The cable was way to low to handle the weight of the kayak, plus the hump I the middle of the path prevented the kayak from reaching its destination without carrying. My suggestion would be to install a two set taller poles with one taller pole on one side for trolling to the water. Likewise there needs to be a taller pole at the take out, so you can use a zip line effect going back. The simplest solution in the would be to create a gravel path wide enough for a truck or SUV all the way to the waters edge, strictly for unloading only.Todays kayaks weigh 30-40 lbs more, so a gravel path makes more since. It really wouldnt take much to improve the launch by 100 percent. A beautiful location which would draw more canoeist and kayakers. You can definitely see more eagles and birds from the water.
The perfect trail for beginners. We only did the 2 easiest for our first time but we really enjoyed the scenery and I cant wait to go back and do the 3rd and most difficult trail.
Easy hiking trail with great views of the lake... Very peaceful too!
Local gem. Love being on the trails.
Decent walking trials that are well maintained and accessible for all fitness levels. A great trial to take kids to as it is pretty much flat throughout with little challenge. There are additionally a number of nature markers that provide details on the local flora. Great walk-up access to nearby lake.
We did all three trails and they are very easy. Well laid out so that you can enjoy water views throughout your walk.
Easy loop trails with great lake views.
My new favorite place to birdwatch. Very quiet and not super trafficked. Only downside is the bugs, but thats nature for you! Highly recommend!
Its a very nice place to hike its mapped out for you and there are a few different trails you could take
Great place to hike with the family. Highly recommend coming to this trail
Awesome area
Great place to take small kids for a bike ride. The hills are not too steep for small children.
I have been walking in here for 8 years about once every 2 weeks and am especially appreciative that there are no fishermen or boat parties smashing glass on shorelines or the trails, making it safe for dog paws. The park maintenance gentleman does a great job at keeping the trails cleared - even provides walking sticks at times at a stand in the parking area and had taken immediate care of a yellow jacket nest on a trail I had alerted him to. Walking the shoreline when the water receeds in winter is a great opportunity to pick up any plastic trash that has washed up from the lake and to see the great veins of slate in the ground. This park is an unspoiled treasure and I hope it stays that way. We have never picked up any ticks in here, nor have seen any snakes. We do stay on the wide trails and do not go into unmowed or brushy areas. Deer, turkey, herons, egrets, a bald eagle, and a box turtle now and then have been all we have seen.
Nice hiking area easy to get to
Great views! Mountain biked the easy trails and soaked it in. I would be caustious of walking the trails, especially solo; many snakes. But hey! Thats nature! Also, its only open on the weekends.
Cant really say anything about the trails, only the canoe trail/launch.. there is a hanging cable that was installed to help get your canoe down long hill consisting of roots, falling trees, stumps etc. Vandals have destroyed that. The water is loaded with felled trees hard to manage around. LOTS of mud!!!.will search other sites.
Great hiking trail, very educational! Well groomed path, easy distance to walk. Its a shame it is only open Fri, Sat, Sun.
Great trails. Well defined, loved the area.
Walked it, did oh 3 or so miles ... do take a walking stick for random spider webs and HAVE TICK SPRAY ... we touched not 1 random blade of grass and ticks were all over us ... there are snakes down by the water but it was a cool walk through woods .
This is a great location for escaping the stress of your daily life! Enjoy the sounds of geese, frogs, song birds and more...for free! The outer path around the entire peninsula is roughly 3.3 miles.
Love it
Early in the summer of 16 I visited this place. It has nice trails and it has canoe and kayak access.
Nice trails. Mosquitos and ticks can be bad at times.
EASY, PEACEFUL HIKING OR BIKING.
Great place to kayak
