As a huge pirate historian fan, this place was great. Always been a fan of Tew, Avery, Kidd etc and I thought I knew a majority of their history but the guide we had was awesome and told us about things I didnt even know. I must for every pirate fan and the gift shop is cool as well! The guides dress as pirates as they take you through the tour. All are friendly and well educated. 5 stars well deserved!
This museum is actually a guided tour through the building. This small building has been fitted with decorations and life-size figures of various pirates. A guide will lead you through several small areas and stop to talk about the history of piracy in the New England area. The entire tour takes around 25 - 30 minutes. The decor and models are quite old and show their age. The old building has a strong musky/ moldy smell, especially when you enter the tour area. The guide seemed knowledgeable enough, but he unfortunately stumbled over many words and used an odd cadence that made it difficult to understand him at times. There are no bathrooms, but a small gift shop with various pirate-themed trinkets.
Nice tour with a funny flare twist. We really enjoyed the tour guide, he was funny, witty, and extremely knowledgeable. I have no knowledge about Pirates going in, I left with a great knowledge base about the pirates, their flags, history, and I even learned that there were women pirates as well. I highly recommend everyone to visit this museum.
I had no idea there was a pirate Museum here in mass! Ive lived here for 29 years and stopped by salem just the other week. I havent even been inside the museum, but i cant wait to enter! The premise of PIRATE MUSEUM is 5 stars, no matter what.
The guided tour is short but interesting. As someone who is fascinated with pirate history, Ill say that some pertinent information is glossed over. For example, Captain Kidd is most famous for burying and hiding his treasure but this is never mentioned. I also found their rugged depiction of Black Sam to be questionable since he was known to be a well kempt man with an affinity for fancy clothing.Ill also say that the cavern at the end of the tour is nothing special. Its just a small tunnel with some props and pirate statues. One last disappointment I will mention is with the gift shop. I was anticipating that the shop would offer a selection of historical pirate flags. Instead, I settled for a shot glass with historic flags on it. I may sound dissatisfied but I wasnt. I enjoyed this museum and would recommend it as a small side activity while in Salem.
Fun little experience. Tour guides definitely get into character and make it a wonderful experience.
This place is very convenient in downtown Salem and worth a stop for the tour. The guide had a lot of historical knowledge and was generally entertaining. Some parts had a very odd strong musty odor, they should try and do something about that it was slightly off putting.
Really fun! If you want to know about pirate history, this will leave you wanting more. The actors do a great job of getting you into the story and theres much to learn about. (If you love pirate-themed dad puns, its a must-see!) Aside from the act, everyone is very knowledgeable about the history of pirates, so if you have a question theyll have an answer!Ive seen reviews from people criticizing the tour but you must remember its about the history, the props bring the stories to life! This is 100% worth it, even if youre just in town for Halloween.
Tons of fun for the kids. Great instructional tour and visuals. Highly recommend if you’ve got some time in Salem!
I took my three kids to Salem and we planned ahead that this would be the one museum we would go into based on feedback we had read online. Parenting sites said it wasnt too scary and my kids like pirates so I winced at the steep entrance fee, but paid it.This is not a museum, but a bunch of mannequins dresses like pirates in a building which doesnt look like its been cleaned in years. You have no option but to take the guided tour with a guide dressed somewhat like a pirate. He told plenty of pirate stories, though he clearly was bored with the job.Halfway through the tour, there were some rather gory mannequin scenes which my youngest kids werent into, so we just left and spent our time elsewhere. I wish we hadnt spent any time there at all.
Pretty cool tour. I loved in new england my hole life and never we t to any of these. Until I moved away. I visited with my fiance and we got to do all the tours. It was very educational and pretty cool to find out about pirates right off the east coast.
Fun, very polite and friendly staff. If you have a pirate loving little one they will enjoy it.
If you love pirates, this is the place for you! Its great for all ages, reasonably priced with excellent staff. Its sensational, but Salem is sensational as a whole so its par for the course. Theres a good amount of history, especially unique local pirate history and fun stories. The tour is led by a period guide and is maybe half an hour long at most. Fun diversion for all.
We didnt actually see much of the museum as they have wax figures and my kids are scared of them. However the staff was friendly and the gift shop prices were reasonable.
Behind-the-scenes insight on what being a pirate was really like, so exciting!!
Out of all the tourist grabs that the area had to offer, this why by far the best one for the money. I won’t spoil the tour, but it was very interesting, and the decor didn’t seem cheap or lazy. The tour guide who brought us through was energetic and seemed happy to be talking about the history of the town. Definitely the best museum in the town.
Goofy and dusty with bored guides and a tired schtick. Go if you need to be entertained a bit or are a kid under 8.
Really cool and informative. Slightly dated, but its still awesome to walk through.
Good, suuuuper cheesy. Historic but playful. Fun and just the right amount of kitschy. Be prepared for puns.
Poor assortiment of real exebits. Most of exebits are poor quality figures of pirates.
A fun guided tour through a wax museum of a small piece of little known New England history.
Great experience, didn’t know Salem was a popular pirate port. Much better than any witch museum
Could use some updating but our tour guide was awesome. I wish we remembered his name. He deserves props. Young brunette kid.
The museum first off is about 30 minutes. The guide was friendly and did a great job telling the stories and answering questions. Yes the mannequins are dated but are good enough to tell the story. Your not riding the Pirates of the Caribbean. Some nice treasure hunting facts while waiting or after you finish. There is a 3 for one pass which saves you money, but I did not get because I like 2 of the 3 stops only the other being witch dungeom. This is a nice fun stop. Your in Salem so enjoy.
Very interesting information about Pirates! Tour guide was great!
Its a fun little stop. Good presentation.
It was really neat, I love pirates and all historical evidence of them. However, this is less of a museum and more of a tour. There are few artifacts in the beginning and the rest of it is really just storytelling. Overall I did have fun with it though and do recommend for others visiting Salem.
I love the pirate museum. Sorry we were drunk.
My kids loved it. It was shorter than I hoped.
The guide was very well prepared and the history behind the NE pirates was captivating.
Fantastic New England experience! Will definitely go again!
For being someone who knows more than an average amount about pirates, this place was only ok. The tour guide wasnt even pronouncing the Whydah properly or mention that it was actually part of Blackbeards fleet which adds to the intrigue. The exhibits were really cool. They had a little town square and a ship which was all integrated into the tour. There were plaques on the wall and some of them the tour guide totally skipped over and of course because its a tour, it felt as if I was being rushed on when reading them.Lastly, the tour guide was dramatic in a sense that he was trying to make himself bigger than the exhibits, as if he were THE show. It was unbecoming and kind of pathetic.
Great fun value and info. Get the combo ticket.
I have been on the combination package tour (Witch dungeon, history, and NE pirate museum) years ago and just introduced this exciting experience to my partner. I think he really enjoyed the museums. The New England Pirate Museum is one of the museums we went on later in the evening (during October they have extended night hours) so only the two of us were on the tour. A little spooky. Yes, most of the exhibits (read: pirates) looked unreal, tacky, and tired, but our guide really knew his stuff. As stated in one of the reviews, this is not an actual museum of real artifacts just bad pirate mannequins. Absolutely true, but kids would enjoy it. Just consider this a one time hoot for adults plus you really do learn about the pirate community.
My mom enjoyed this museum in Salem, MA.
Not kid friendly. They are selective with who can use the restroom. After seeing multiple people use it, we were told “there are no public restrooms.” This is definitely not how you run a business, and I wouldnt be surprised if there’s a lawsuit sometime soon. Would never come back here again!
Wasnt a museum.... it had wax figures with a quick guided tour. Old and musty smelling but our tour guide did a good job. Staff out front were slightly unprofessional and laughing about not telling tourists all of the stories to hurry up their tour...
Didnt even stay for my tour. Workers talk about patrons when they walk out if the building. Immature
Very informative but the hospitality from the employees sucked. Got rushed through and wasnt able to take all the pictures we wanted. Could definitely use some improvement.
Good walk through tour. The guide was entertaining.
Staff were very friendly and great with our kids
This place is a dump! For the price they charge the could dust off exhibits or wipe the live spiders from the lights. The place smells like mold. Save your money and do not go to pirates museum in Salem Massachusetts! Only good part was the kid who gave the tour. Very knowledgeable and polite!
Lots of history and great setup
Best museum in town. We went in thinking it would be just another silly museum in town. Turned out to be a fantastic tour with a very knowledgeable staff. You may go to Salem for the witches, but dont leave out the pirates.
This was such a fun tour! I found it highly entertaining and very informative. Obviously given the name if the museum, you dont learn anything about witches, just pirates. Our tour guide was dressed for the part and had a very projecting voice that could easily be heard throughout the entire tour. The walk-through was decorated so accurately, I honestly felt like I was walking through a cave hunting for treasure right along with the pirates. Very fun and entertaining, I would highly recommend this to anyone that was interested in learning more about pirate legends from the Salem coastal area.
A tourist destination for information on the pirates that lurked the ocean back in the day. The staff were pleasant and they seem to know what they were talking about, however, it was just short and could have been longer.
My friend and I had the best tour ever! We went last Wednesday and had a personal tour that lasted longer than 20 minutes. The guide was hilarious and on point with his facts. Side note: let the guide speak and read the signs after. The guide has way better descriptions than the wall.
My kids loved this place. Our tour guide was great! Fun story to follow along to. The gift shop was fun.
So fun! Staff was excellent, prices were Fair, the show they put on during the tour was excellent. Definitely a must-see
Great history & fun .
The tour is cheesey.
Our tour guide was good. This is more of a tour of historic events on pirates than it is seeing actual historic items. Although at first it was a little disappointing to find that out the tour guide was very entertaining which made learning on the history worth it.
This place is absolutely terrible. The displays are ridiculously dated, it smells terrible and musty inside and the actors/narrator seemed bored. Don’t waste your money
I went here as a kid and remembered it was fun and quirky!!
Should be named: stories of New England pirates. Not sure I saw a single artifact, maybe a few pistols, but Im they were from another era. And the guide was clearly didnt highlight them. Youd be better off watching a documentary. Other than the guide, staff were a bite irritable. Frankly, I was glad the tour was 10 min.
Awesome little museum dedicated to the history of pirates. It is nice that they do not only focus on the Salem pirates, but all pirates. Very informative, very friendly and knowledgeable staff. This place is a definite must stop location, in Salem.
I cant believe this place still exists when one can do a quick Google search to prove that theyre spreading factual inaccuracies. From improperly labeled Jolly Rogers (See the photos in Adam Akires review from a year ago... not a one is colored accurately nor attributed to the correct captain! When I pointed this out they tried to shush me.) to a tour script focused more on puns and perpetuating myths than true accounts or primary sources, this is another overly sensationalized pseudohistorical Salem tourist trap.
Lots of great information and history I had never heard before.
Guide was very nice, the kids liked it more than the adults did I think. Nice little stop.
A lot of fun and our tour guide had a lot of knowlage.
Fun and educational
Fun visit, but needs some updating. Good history lesson if you like pirates.
If your into pirate lore, this is ok.
Fun and interesting. Better than o expected?
Awesome museum we had a very nice tour guide we learned a lot about pirates around new England
Kids LOVED it.
Ok. Fun for something to do on a rainy day.
The folks working there seemed like they could care less to have visitors, the information was interesting.
Meh. Thats the best word i could use to describe it i think
Great place, educational too
The guide was cool and funny but it was NOT a museum. Could really improve the manequins a little bit.
Dinky displays, but at least the tour guide was a good story teller. We bought the combo ticket which gets entrance into 3 total attractions, museums is a strong word for these places.
Great local history for the area.
I did it once and that was enough. The guide did have a good amount of knowledge on the local Pirate scene.
After a day of hearing about the horrors of the witch trials this place was a welcome alternative. Great staff and lots of info!
Part of the 3 site tour. Found out lots of cool history we didnt know.
Fun way to kill half an hour.
I could not engage with the tour guide. I know he did his best but I didnt enjoy it.
Nice historical guide, but the exhibit is a bit dated
Delightful tour of piracy of both famous and local pirates. Worth the price of admission.
I took my little cousins to this, ages 6 and 4. While the guide was enthusiastic and knowledgable, the place needs a serious face lift. The scenes and manequins are extremely dated and lack enhancing lighting, effects or sound effects to make it more exciting. The 80 foot cave sounded enticing on the website but was so ineffective that my cousins ran through it, barely noticing the scenes on each side of them. The pirate museum could tell its great story in a much more captivating way if they made serious upgrades to the aesthetics.
The museum puts together a very good and breif history of many of the pirates from the area and the displays are very well done, although some are very well aged.
Interesting guided tour, allows flash photography and has a friendly staff.
Surprisingly informative and entertaining for history buffs. Not the most high tech, but well done.
Some exhibits are a little creepy, but pretty interesting still.
Fun but quick.
Live actors make this place fun!
Arg there be pirates in this here tourist attraction.
Very informative
Fun, very interesting. Our guide, he was great.
This place is a joke.... They sell the Trolley tickets but do not want to sell them.... The staff are not very helpful either.
Makes for a nice change of all the Witch Trails redundancy. ;)
Decent fun for the family!
If you love history make sure to visit
