I have played at great course through out the east coast. This is the best value Ive ever enjoyed.
Gorgeous course! Well maintained! Tough greens to putt.
I played this course a few days ago for the first time in over a year. Not sure why but I had a negative feeling about the course from the last time I played it.Well thats all gone now.I throughly enjoyed the course and the shaded areas in and around the hills. It was in great shape and I cant wait to play it again.
Hanging Rock Golf Club is a challenging and fun golf course located in Salem, Virginia, about 10 minutes from downtown Roanoke and eight minutes from the Roanoke Regional Airport. The course was designed by Russell Breeden and overlooks the beautiful Roanoke Valley of Virginia. It’s surrounded by breathtaking natural beauty and guarantees golf enthusiasts of all skill levels a pleasant and exciting round.Over the years, Hanging Rock has earned numerous Roanoke golf and national accolades, including a 3 1/2-star rating by Golf Digests Best Places to Play and one of the top 100 Must Play Courses in the Mid-Atlantic by Washington Golf Monthly magazine. Seventeen of the last 21 years, Hanging Rock has been voted Best Golf Course in the Roanoke Valley by readers of The Roanoke Magazine.A lot of the fairways at Hanging Rock are tree lined, forcing either control off the tee or a good recovery game. There are five par 3s and five par 5’s which can help you gain some strokes as a couple of the par 5s are reachable. Most Memorable Hole: Number 14, Par 4, 369 yards (upper green). This is the most unique golf hole I’ve ever played. Before teeing off players choose which green to play to. The original hole is a straight par 4, that plays longer than the 369 yards stated on the card. Tee off from an elevated tee box over a creek. There’s water on the right and if the hill on the left doesn’t bring your ball back into the fairway, it will leave an interesting lie. Your approach shot is blind and straight uphill to a triangular two-tiered green that slopes back to front and is protected back right by sand. Option 2 involves the aforementioned water on the right. Hit the same tee shot, but instead of going up the hill, the green sits on a peninsula surrounded by that water. The kidney shaped green is a lot deeper than it is wide. It’s a significantly shorter approach shot to the lower green – 100 – 120 yards - if you aren’t afraid of the water. Most of the members I spoke with prefer the original green for two reasons: they’re afraid of the water and they’re afraid of snakes. I looked and couldn’t find any. Before your round, spend some time on Hanging Rock’s full length driving range. You can hit every club in the bag, which is good because you’ll be using them all on the course. There’s also a practice bunker and chipping is allowed on the practice green. It’s a popular place with locals to hit balls. After your round, stick around for some great clubhouse grub from the grill. They make tasty burgers and sandwiches and have all of your favorite post-golf libations. With such stunning views of the mountains, it’s hard to believe that Hanging Rock is so convenient to Roanoke. There are a good variety of holes; each one of the five par 5s is unique and there is a good deal of elevation change. Hills on the sides of a few holes can make for some unordinary lies meaning you may need a certain amount of creativity on these shots.Hanging Rock has some great membership options that will let you take advantage of this great course as often as you like. The Hanging Rock Players Card gets you reduced green fees throughout the year as well as ½ off on range balls and more! The Hanging Rock Play Pass gets you unlimited complimentary green fees all year, reduced cart fees and unlimited complimentary range balls. For younger players, Hanging Rock’s Junior Play Pass gives juniors age 17 and under the same benefits as the adult’s Play Pass. A Couples Play Pass is also available. Just call the pro shop and they can give you all the details.Hanging Rock Golf Club prides themselves on a high quality golf course that is magnificently maintained, superb amenities and outstanding service. Their goal is to be recognized as the regions premier golf experiences. From your first drive to your last putt, you’ll enjoy great golf conditions and fantastic views at Hanging Rock Golf Club.
5 starts for price, difficulty of course and friendly and experienced staff.have played here many times over past 2-3 years.Fairways are well maintained for most of years. many holes have that character about them.Staff is nice and they will try their best so you can enjoy your golf.Walkable - but be ready for some hills - approx 8.5-9 miles depending on how you hit.Can be played in 4 hours ( again on how you play)Some of the holes have great views.
Course in great shape. Good layout. My favorite course in Roanoke.
Greens are verry good, staff are helpful. Courses is challenging. Best in Roanoke
Good course but staff members can be misleading when finding a good deal. Unless you are a member its good to experience once every couple years...
Good price tuff course if you like a challenge.
Loving it right now.
Fun course to play.
Challenging in great shape.
Tee to green condition has really gone downhill. Lack of rangers, so you’re rolling the dice on a 4:30-5:00 round. You can find equalcondition and better pace elsewhere for less cost.
Always fun place to play. Great staff.
This is probably the prettiest course Ive ever played at, and it was only $38. The elevation changes add quite a challenge along with the sloped greens. I four-putted twice after two GIRs, but that is my own fault, lol. This is a must-play if up in Roanoke!
The course is excellent and in very good shape. The views of the mountains from up there are spectacular. As with any course in this area, bring bug spray.
Awesome golf course always in awesome shape...hit it if you are in the area...I play here once a year
Beautiful, well maintained course. Greens as good as any Ive seen locally. Large greens make good targets for us hackers. Overall course more rewarding than penalizing. Love it!
Great Course!!
The Rock is great! Pricing is reasonable and relative to the condition of the course. With some tight fairways and plenty of beautiful scenery, its always a good time. The staff is also all great. Very friendly people who remember the regulars and always show respect. Highly recommended, from someone who plays 5-8 times a month.
Although HR Golf has some lovely views and the staff is friendly, the course was in rough shape. Greens had been punched (No one told us this when we called) and fairways were spotty. Course could be better maintained. Maybe the low price to play should have tipped me off.
Great course hospitable staff.
Nice golf course. Will play again when in the area
Cant say. Iv never been there. Something about the price when it say country club. Haha. Sorry cant help you this time.
Excellent course
It was fantastic and staff were extremely professional.
Great place to play or hang out with friends or just practice
Nicely maintained. Cant wait to get back out in the spring.
Fairways have sparse grass. If you like hitting your expensive clubs off of dirt and mud all day, by all means play the course. I’ve spent less to play on better courses
It was worth the $26 I paid. It’s a great layout. Fairways are so-so but greens were nice. Good carts and close to my hotel.
Hanging Rock is my local club. Ive played most of the other courses in the Roanoke Valley and prefer The Rock over the others. The staff is great to deal with, and the course is well maintained. The Greens are very challenging, but fair. I would like to see more consistency in the types of sand in the traps. Overall, its a great place to play!
Extremely poor customer service. Booked a tee time online. The website charged a booking fee with the remainder of the funds due at the course. Three hours and 9 holes later I asked the pro shop if I could get a rain check for 9 holes due to pace of play and darkness. The pro shop attendant said because the tee time was booked online “we don’t see that money so we can’t help”. When I explained that I paid the entire amount for my tee time at the course and showed him the email proving my point he recommended that I call the company. If the employee took a few minutes away from the personal phone call he was having, maybe he could have sensed my frustration and provided a creative solution.
Played this course on May 10, 2018. Poor conditions. Rough fairways. Rough greens. I would give this course a C plus rating. The 9,10 and I believe 14 holes are odd. Not anything you you expect on a class course. I am a an 8 hcp player and will not return ! So much better available
Greens were super fast, course in great shape considering February!
Course is in great shape.
Great awesome night great people
Great course with beautiful views.
My husband and I were looking for a course to play on as we were passing thru. We were very pleased with this choice. Everyone on staff that we encountered was friendly and helpful. The course was in very nice condition with nice elevation changes and views. We would play here again and recommend.
I played Hanging Rock on Monday, Oct 15th, 2018. This course is VERY pretty; has some very interesting holes. Also reasonably priced. But VERY TOUGH for walkers. Some ENORMOUS walks between one green and next tee. Biggest, toughest of all is tween 1st green and 2nd tee. STEEP uphill and long. Others are tween 8th and 9th, 9th and either clubhouse or 10th tee, and another huge walk tween 14th green and 15th tee. Also, usually the fairways are in good or at least OK shape. But HRGC got RAVAGED by remnants of both Hurr Florence and Michael. The course should be in much better shape by next late April or May.
Excellent course. Very friendly and helpful staff
One of the best courses in the Roanoke Valley. Nestled in the foothills north of Salem, Va, Hanging Rock offers many elevation changes, water hazard, and large, challenging well kept greens. Moderately priced for a great day of golf.
Love the layout of this course
Great course, nice format, rates outstanding and staff going out of there way to make you feel welcome.
Great place to
Nice
My local club and fun to play.......stay straight....the trees like to collect golf balls.Well managed and always looks good.
Beautiful course....especially during the fall
Called to make a tee time and was told if you get here by 4:30 I can get you out no problem. When I arrived I had to wait in line at the counter for 20 minutes. When I finally got up to the counter I was told I would have to wait until 5:30 then I could go out behind a group of 7 that had a 5:15 tee time. I wont make the mistake of wasting my time here again.
Great tract. Challenging, beautiful layout. Bunkers need work.
Beautiful views and challenging course. Great value right now.
Good service. Beautiful location.
Good golf course and is challenging. Not much room off the fairways.
Great place
Nice course and can be tricky.

Great
Course was in good shape
Great place
I play golf here.
Not a fan of the new layout. Back is the front. The rough is the rocky mountains. Greens not mowed and groomed.
Good golf for the price
Nice course for pricing
