Hidden treasure. My 6 year old son and I enjoyed it. The docents are very knowledgeable about the history of the lighthouse. The spiral staircase and ladder to the top are not too physically taxing if youre in decent shape but beware if you have a young child or senior citizen in your party.
Cool lighthouse built in 1822. One of only two lighthouses still operating on the southern shore of Lake Ontario. You can go up with a tour guide to see the lens itself. It costs a few bucks per person. Theres also a small museum. Nice views of the port of Rochester. Tour guides were friendly and knowledgeable. Be prepared to climb steps. Theres a spiral staircase and then a short ladder at the top. Its hot up there on sunny days.
Unfortunately I was there for the last weekend. But Ill be going back next year, its amazing view at the top of the light tower!
Cool place. Great view plus very knowledgeable docents. One of rochesters gems.
Very nice piece of local history. Worthy of a visit. I enjoyed the informational displays and how they explain when the port of Charlotte was built, how a battle between Britain and the United States was fought here during the War of 1812, and other interesting facts. This place is a gem!
This was a neat little spot but a little bit pricey to go up and see. The museum was ok, it was interesting because it didn’t really talk about the light house itself and the stories they told us were crazy interesting but just not really fitting. My kids had s great time but it isn’t one of those must see places.
We got there while they werent open, but it was fin walking around, and my kids LOVED the hill that they could run and roll down
Great place to visit. A lot of information about history of lighthouse. Very interesting. Thanks
After many years of viewing it from the river, i finally made a visit. Visit the house with its displays of the area and do go up the stairs in the lighthouse itself. It will turn you into a kid.An hour is enough time to fall in love with this understated tower...The guides are wonderful and informative. They will give you info about various historical points since the war of 1812 and take you up through 200 years. We visited a Charlotte restaurant, and made this part of out visit. You can do it rain or shine.
This lighthouse you can visit & climb to the tower which holds the light. There is also story time to hear different experience s that happened to lighthouse residents. Really Cool Stories.
A real treasure...lots of history...very friendly staff...a must see in Rochester area.
Amazing history and view
The light station is about a mile inland from the shore, and there are restaurants and the Port/Customs between the two. It’s relatively smaller than many others but beautiful.
Had a lovely tour by Jack. Would highly recommend a visit.
Nice place to visit, you can learn a lot about the history from the guide and then you can climb up to the top of the lighthouse. Worth a trip.
Your guides really know the history and their love for the property shows.
Beautiful historic place. Lovely story about the restoration.
Great place to visit in the Rochester area. The staff is very knowledgeable on the history of the lighthouse and the areas history. They have a small museum with relics and info of items used and information. The3y also have a small gift shop. You also get to go up into the lighthouse and see the view. They do ask for a $5 donation per person.
Such a beautiful historic place to visit
I really like that there is a small picnic area and information on the War of 1812 between the Americans and the British which led to eventual Independence for Canada and solidified the independence of the United States. In addition to the picnic tables and benches scattered around the site, the lighthouse itself is a sturdy Stone and Mortar construction which none should fear to climb. Inside the lighthouse is a time tested spiral staircase which has safely seen visitors from all over the world. Once you ascend, the view from the light room is excellent. On a clear day you can see many miles up the coast in both directions, with the exceptions of a few modern constructions.
What a great piece of local history! Rich in history with extremely knowledgeable guides. My young nieces and I had a lovely 1.5 hours exploring and enjoyed a picnic prior to opening on the property.
Beautiful historical keepers house museum and lighthouse! It is supported by its society of volunteers, membership dues, admissions, and gift shop. Generous benefactors have funded grants to help with restoration.
It is historic and tour guides are very knowledgeable.
I am glad to see that they have restored the Light and the lamp house. My family was probably the last family to live there back in the mid 70s. My father was the Commanding Officer and the local Coast Guard station across the water way. He had the house restored while we lived there and had opened the light to tours. By word of mouth only. The lamp house was completely boarded up at the time. Happy to see the historical society take it over and restore it to the beauty it use to be. Missed the large trees that was on the property. Kept it cool during the summer. Looks good today.
Lighthouse tours open May through September. Museum open weekends. Close to Lame Ontario and Ontario Beach park. Built in 1822 it is the original building. I knew one of the last lighthouse keepers who lived there.
I had a great day on the Lake Ontario Lighthouse Challenge. This was one of 8 lighthouses we visited.
We went on a Monday, so the museum was closed, but we walked the grounds and appreciated the lighthouse for what it was.
Limited hours so it wasnt open when we went, but it was a neat place to visit from the outside!
Gorgeous
Awesome public park on Lake Ontario. It has nice restaurants and small shops, some are seasonal.
Well maintained lighthouse but the tour was sparse.
Nice guide and wonderful history
Quaint and pretty. Definitely worth a visit. Especially if you are lighthouse aficionado.
Learned interesting facts about the area but did not go all the way to top of lighthouse because people with me and others in the group ahead were scared aand limited to crawling up. There was no railing, instead a rope that moved between loops, not a secure, safe feeling. A permanent railing would be a HUGE improvement since going up to the top was a potential highlight and goal of the visit.
Beautiful place to visit, i brought a date here and she loved it. right by the water.
Very friendly and knowledgeable family. The light house is amazing!
Lovely historical site .
Great little lighthouse on the hill. Be sure to walk out to the lighthouse on the pier too!
Great lighthouse
My hood!
