I was in Rochester last weekend for the 2019 Clothesline Festival and I was not disappointed at all. The festival is huge! I had planned on attending both days setting aside a half day to tour this great institution. The festival was a lot of fun. There was food and music for all kinds of tastes. I bought a print from a New York State artist. The art gallery/museum is huge also. Plenty to see so plan accordingly. Someone was playing the huge pipe organ upstairs, probably trying to wake the mummies. There is a restaurant on location also a fine gift shop. Some of the artwork in the gallery is for sale so ask about it at the shop. Plenty of parking when the festival is not running. Memberships are also available which offers money saving benefits. The Memorial Art Gallery (MAG) is located on the University Of Rochester Campus on University Avenue, Rochester New York USA.
Loved coming here and seeing art made by different artists and their approach to making the art. I truly loved the different exhibits that would be there and you could experience something new.
Always fun to explore the museum. They often have new installations to check out, so there is a lot to see, even if you go frequently. They also have a nice gift shop and restaurant to visit afterwards.
Another hidden gem of a Museum. A very eclectic collection from folk art to mixed media to fine art and statues. In the great hall we were privileged to hear a Baroque ensemble practice. It was fantastic.Give yourself enough time. We did not and must return. Dont forget to wander the grounds as they have some lovely (and fun) sculptures in and around the gardens.
18th Century European Art. Rennasaince, Asian, Medieval Art.Post War & Contemporary Art
Great experience. The docents were very informative and were great with my students questions. This was most of my students first experience with a museum and they really enjoyed it. It had a little bit for everyone. Well worth the trip!
Fantastic museum with a wide range of artwork and interactive exhibits. Its free for University of Rochester employees if you bring your ID. Cant beat that!
I had a great time it was 15 dollars for an adult but the exhibits were amazing its been a long time since Ive been there an Im telling you go!
Breath taking Art!... Rare Collection Of Historical Masterpiece Ancient Art galleries.
The stained glass exhibit is incredible!
A great place to spend a day off! The Finger Lakes installment was one of my favorites but their permanent collection is also worth seeing! If you have a few days in Rochester, this should definitely be on your list of what to see.
Broke down crying. Staff was very helpful. 4 1/2 stars.3 stars
We went to the David Bowie Bash that was located in their Grand Ballroom, and this is a great place to have a very large birthday, reunion, wedding or gathering. The Art Museum itself is much larger inside than what it looks like from the outside. Its very reasonably priced, and there are pieces from very famous and well known artists. This museum feels like it should be in NY City - Very impressive.
Theres nothing negative to say about a visit to MAG. The docents are all so well versed, and our students enjoyed the trip immensely.
I cant say enough about the Memorial Art Gallery, I just Love it here. When I need to just relax my mind, or to just sketch, or just walking around enjoy all the beautiful pieces, and dont forget the Brown Hund Down Town Restaurant thats directly in the building, awesome food and goodies, check it out. And the gift store have everything. And let us not forget the Creative Workshop down stair. And so much more.
Very nice place. It is free for University for Rochester students. Students must carry their ID cards for free entry. On Sunday afternoon, there is an Italian baroque recital. The recital was the best thing I heard, so soothing and pleasant to ears. Although its small, yet you must visit to hear the 16th century old Italian baroque.
I enjoy taking professional photos around this place!
An exciting, rich resource. Their artist lectures and other special events are especially fresh and relevant. The museum store us s very good for gifts. Membership is reasonably priced. Highly recommend.
One of our last stops during a three day visit to Rochester, Memorial Art Gallery is well worth the visit. Thought provoking exhibits, clean wide open space, and also a lovely event venue.Take a moment to admire the grounds no matter what the weather is. There are fun pieces outside the building like the one in my photo here. I spied a fair number of people posing for selfies and also having photo sessions done outside the building and they were also setting up for a wedding the day that we were there. We were all quite tired by the time that we got there, but I didn’t want to miss it and I was glad that we didn’t skip this gallery.
Great asset for Rochester. Many ancient artifacts & art works from all ages. Nice gift shop. 10% off with membership, which helps. Friendly helpful staff in the gift shop, which I appreciate. I bought a nice art piece walking cane for my 83 year old dad (See pix), & I got 10% due to being a member. I also bought Xmas stuff at 75% off.
This place is absolutely fantastic. Worth the entry price for the upstairs level alone. The organ and massive hall that is filled with rennaisance art is an experience all in its own. If you enjoy any art at all, I highly recommend you visit.
Dont let the word Gallery fool you. This is a great collection of classic and contemporary art. The permanent and temporary installations are of equal importance. Take your time. Its worth it.
The Memorial Art Gallery is a true gem in Rochester. Some of the best exhibits and they rotate their collection.
Scenic outdoors. Highly recommended during fall season
What an incredible museum, we stopped here not knowing what to expect and left pleasantly surprised.. the upper floor is packed countless artifacts including a Mummy! This is a must see museum if Ive ever seen one.
Just had photos of bagpipe band taken on front steps. Did not enter building.
Very cool place with outdoor art installments down the whole block.
I love the memorial art gallery, is the best place to go. Beautiful artwork! I saw Monets Show! Most amazing thing!!
The new Mucha exhibit is wonderful. Such varied work and well done displies. We had dinner and cocktails after the lovely restraunt. Great holiday cocktails, service and food
Very relaxing to walk around and view artwork, etc. Had lunch at the Brown Hound Bistro; delicious!!!
As a UofR staff member, its a nice benefit to be able to visit here. I also enjoy the number of Poke Stops for Pokemon Go there are there. Its a good community that goes around plays there!
My daughter went for a party and loved it. They even let her bring me in quickly to show me her favorite piece of art. Amazing that my 6 year old developed a favorite piece of art.
The Black History Day was amazing! The fashion show at the end featuring Sheila Vaughn and SV Style topped it all off. Annie Dukes did am amazing job coordinating the festivities.!
I love that they have newer stuff and creative areas. This is the kind of gallery that potentially would have been awesome as a kid. I loved learning about Alphonse Mucha.
Membership very worthwhile. Interesting traveling exhibitions. Beautiful and priceless collection of famous paintings, statues, mixed media, artifacts and more. Italian baroque organ with weekly concerts by Eastman students. Events throughout the year.
I love that Abraham Lincoln bust the best at this Art museum
I went to a Lindy Hop swing dance. I had a rocking good time. Everything was great; the music/live band, the venue, the ambiance, the dance performances, the dance partners, and the socializing. I highly recommend MAG dances for anyone who enjoys swing dancing and/or jazz, blues, or R&B. Its sure to be a good time.
Incredible Monet exhibition! Free organ playing!
Very much enjoyed the afternoon. The gallery has a wide-ranging collection, from ancient pottery to local watercolor paintings. My favorite today was Morning on the River by Jonas Lie.
Very diverse exhibition. Even Claude Monet, mummys, other stuff from all over the world. I was very surprised. Definitely is worth visiting.
Such a treasure! Wonderful temporary and permanent exhibits. Definitely visit this museum if you are in Rochester! Note: Free parking
The MAG is most famous for the clothesline arts festival which is held in August. This is a popular festival which offers visitors the opportunity to appreciate and acquire the work of various artists.
They had some pretty cool exhibits but my absolute favorite is this giant tapestry with these different animals on it. It has a full on derp lion. It looks like a lion drawn by a guy that had never seen a lion, and the person describing it just said its like a dog, but with a face you know?! I couldnt stop laughing at how absurd it looked. The other animals were pretty derpy too but that lion just takes the Cake. I would go back just to see this tapestry.
I love going to the MAG to see the exhibits. I just went to the Mucha exhibit and it was amazing. I highly recommend the game as a whole
I lived the accessible tour of the Deaf Art exhibit and appreciated the half price after 5 pm admission. So many beautiful visual and tactile experiences!!
Beautiful exhibits in a pleasant environment.
The Memorial Art Gallery is consistently the best place in Rochester to see world-class museum grade art from antiquities to contemporary. Over the past few years, the MAG has brought incredible exhibitions and events to Rochester most recently evidenced by The Path to Paradise, the stained glass work of Judith Schaechter and Alphonse Mucha: Master of Art Nouveau The moving image exhibitions of Ja’Tovia Gary, Issac Julien, Kalup Linzy and others are opening Rochesters eyes to new artists and media. If you have not visited MAG recently, do so!
My first visit was great. Lovely museum. Nice staff.
One of my favorite places to spend a couple spare hours! The staff is really welcoming and friendly, and this is a great place to go if you have a U of R ID (its free!). They have great discounts for students from other institutions, too. Its in the middle of a great area of Rochester, so be sure to explore the restaurants nearby.
The Mucha exhibit was a comprehensive example of his work. Amazing to see full size originals. And Sunday means a chance to hear the Italian Barogue organ being played which is incredible.
I really love this art gallery.they have courses you can take. And the art in the gallery is out standing. Great for kids and a date.again out standing theyre is a restaurant to never been but here its fabulous. A Must. Seriously.didnt take any photos. P.S. there is a park in back. Plus just walk the grounds to see the art on the grounds.
I cater Events there. Its a great venue to visit and a great place to host a party.
A terrific gallery inside and out
The Latinas Dance and Cultural Event was Awesome. The Gallery is amazing; the kids loved the Gallery, the fun workshops with the Artists, and friends at the event.Thank you MAG!
I go there every winter to get the magazine of yearly events for Rochester and the surrounding towns. They also list every restaurant in the same areas. I gotta have it.
Always a sheer pleasure to wander through the permanent collections and see whatever traveling shows stop in Rochester. Lovely to see local artists throughout the galleries as well.
This place is amazing! I was there for over two and a half hours and still didnt get a chance to see everything. I spent an extra $5 to see their Monet exhibit- it was amazing, so much pastels!I will definitely be going again.
Such a cool place, chock-full of priceless art including a couple of paintings by Claude Monet, and ancient artifacts dating from Bible times all the way up modern times. You sure wont want to miss a visit to this museum!
Going to be honest, Ive only been here for the Halloween parties and Pokemon Raid hour, but its a beautiful gallery inside and out.
I just had a chance to see the new graffiti exhibit which is a really cool piece. For Rochester being such a small city, the MAG does a good job bringing in some pretty nice pieces.
Advent concert listening to choral and organ music. Nice way to get into the Christmas mood.
Excellent gallery with great collections. European wing is amazing.
Excellent place to socially distance
A broad sampling of art from ancient Egypt, Greece & Rome, Asia. Paintings, sculptures, and artifacts from medieval Europe through the 21tst century offer a sense of shifting styles through the centuries. Several rotating galleries feature visiting collections, so theres always something new to see. The current exhibit, Lessons of the Hour--Frederick Douglass by artist Isaac Julian is a powerful video installation that creatively illuminates episodes from the life of the abolitionist, orator, and former Rochester resident. Allow a minimum of two hours for a leisurely walk-through, more if you have the stamina and appetite for reading descriptions and notations. Highly recommended
Had a Great day at the Memorial Art Gallery!! Always enjoy the book sale and the food trucks. Had the best grilled cheese with mac and cheese and pulled pork on it. All kinds of booths from jewelry, pottery, leather and puppets!
I really enjoyed my visit to MAG. From the outside, the building, as well as the sculpture park, is photogenic. Inside, the museum is well laid-out and comes with an encyclopedic collection. Admittedly, some galleries are rather limited in scope, but still I appreciated the variety, and there is no lack of compelling works of art here. Its lighting, however, leaves a lot to be desired: while American galleries receive an over-abundance of light in places, some of the other galleries, such as the Art of Ancient Americas one, are very dimly lit. Thats my only complaint, though.
This is an outstanding Gallery, with many dimensions of art and history. I went to view the Monet exhibit, but was shocked when I saw how huge this place is and how many famous works of art, and many . many exhibits they had. I highly recommend. Every staff person I spoke to was friendly and knowledgeable - very delightful.
Good history collection upstairs; changing exhibits downstairs
MAG was a treat! Each area brought me a new surprise and I was thrilled by the landscapes but thats my personal taste. $6 for college students w/ id was certainly nice and I adored the sculpture garden outside. Parking is free and the museum was very accessible. I hope to return for more!
In Rochester we are lucky to have the art and culture scene we do. With a rotating inventory, and two or three floors to display in, this gallery is always changing and rearranging. You get classic paintings along with digital modern art plus great out door sculptures. Probably one of my favorite places in Rochester.
Diverse collection of historical and local artists, community events, children and family events and art classes .
Beautiful place to expand your perspective
Love it there they always have some great events for kids to be a part of and a nice little cafe in there as well. There is also a beautiful fountain in front of the main entrance.
Its probably the best museum in town which is not saying much...poor abstract works that symbolize nothing. There is a chair on top of a pillow. The brown hound is the only saving grace great food
A very nice selection of art. Enjoyed the variety. They played an old baroque organ. Quite the experience.
We are members and always enjoy the diversity of shows they bring to Rochester.
Love the museum, but dont bring your baby bag if you bring your small child or baby with you, youll have to carry it on your front uncomfortably and it really takes away from the experience and shortens the time youll be able to spend at the museum, which makes the 20$ entrance fee a difficult cost...
There are many pieces here that I was pleasantly surprised to find in Rochester. Im so glad we have this little gem.
A wonderful museum that showcases historical and contemporary art. An essential stop for any visitors to Rochester.
Beautiful artwork by various local artists
Great little gallery loved seeing the Mucha exhibit.
Great food, excellent service and relaxing atmosphere.
A beautiful gallery, very well maintained, great upkeep. Worth a visit. Pleasant and courteous staff.
Beautiful art, exhibits, environment. Amazing to have such a great museum in this city.
Attended Clothesline Arts Festival. Well organized. Great art. So much to see!
I volunteer there. It was a great night. We had artist talks. Very interesting.
Fantastic for all ages game fantasies
Nothing to write a book about. I was there for We Dont Hate We Hustle event to meet Teddy Ruckus & I took a picture with him he never hosted.
Really love this place cool relaxing
Was wandering the grounds some very nice pieces on display.
Construction is being done to make your experience even better.
A very enjoyable place with so much to see.
I love the MAG, & I love the Clothesline Festival. The best Rochester festival. THE BEST!!!
Clothesline festival has so many artists and so enjoyable. Had a great time.
The main airt museum in Rochester, and for good reason. So much variety as the museum covers thousands of years of art and history, from ancient Egyptian mummies to baroque to contemporary art and everything in between
Great Gallery, and very good place to go for a nice summer day. They have outdoor seating. And tons of places to get food from nearby. Pro tip: theres a ton of poke stops here if you play pokemon go.
This is a very nice small museum, with something to interest everyone. Plus, free organ concerts at 3 on Sundays, on a 17th century pipe organ. They also usually have varied special exhibits.
Great place to hold events. Went there for a fundraiser and the event was well catered.Lost of parking. You also get to see some excellent exhibits.
Even better than I remember. Great for families, makes art accessible to everyone and so enjoyable. I will be back again and again. I love rediscovering Rochesters gems.
Quite comprehensive and interesting collection, with objects and paintings from ancient times to the modern day. Many well known artists are represented, albeit by lesser works. It is a treat to be able to wander the galleries while the 350 year old baroque organ is being exercised by an Eastman student. Its not the MET but any art lover will definitely not be disappointed. Just dont walk around while snacking on a bag of gummy bears. I got yelled at for that. haha
