The place was what you would expect any park to be like. It was quiet, clean, and enjoyable. We did see a snake and there were a ton of mosquitos, so you should probably bring some bug repellent. Not many people visit this place, so it is a perfect place to have a walk during this time.
So beautiful in the fall. Nice place to take a little walk with the kids while learning some history!
Great short hike .. well maintained trail and park, awesome view! Bring mosquito spray!
I saw lots of sweet flowering plants including a nightshade, passion-flowers, some jewelweed by the creek, two different types of morning glories. Also, the biggest grasshopper Ive ever seen and lots of Devils Walkings-stick trees. Pretty sweet all around. Nice creek, mosquitos down there. Apparently, it also used to be the scene of war goings on.
Fun little place to walk the dogs
Stopped here on our Atlanta trip to catch some Kabuto...but also got some great scenic views in the process. Its a nice little park to add to any adventure youre going on.
A short walk though the woods will bring you to a beautiful overlook of the river, complete with cannon. There are informative signs along the way, providing insights and overviews of the significance of this spot. Parking is free and there is no entrance fee, we brought our dogs; there is nothing to suggest they are not allowed.
I love history, the parks are beautiful.
Nice little walk with a dash of history
We made a pit stop at the lookout as we were driving through Virginia. The reviews said that it was a good place to walk a dog and, it was perfect! Just a short walk to what remained of the fortress, not hard at all, and an interesting story, equally short to the walk. One lookout point required a climb of stairs. If you are at war, it was a good place to be. A formidable defensive position which was employed with definitive success. It didnt require much explanation as it was obvious why the position was selected. The explanation boards filled in any missing details. As far as historic Civil War sites go, it was one of my favorites. Not many people there, didnt have public bathrooms.
If you like Civil War locations, this is a good one. Important to the Confederate defense of Richmond.
Its a good place to visit i. Such a historic place
This place is amazing. I can not wait to go back when I have more time.
Nice park - part of the Richmond Battlefield park system and operated by the National Park Service. This is the Fort built overlooking the James River that bombarded the USS Monitor and drive it away from Richmond. There is a parking area and a 10 minute walk back to the site. It is a self guided tour but they have done a fabulous job with the signage and exhibits. There is a replica cannon and a platform with a beautiful view down the James. Open during daylight hours only.
Love this park. Nice history and beautiful view.
Great little park with several boards explaining the history of the fort. Very nice elevated view of the James River
This is a good place for a short walk and you can learn some interesting history along the way. There isnt too much as far as exhibits but there is a large cannon and some good signage that tells the story of this historical fort.
The high tech battle during the Civil War. The Union Monitor with a Flotilla of 6 ships tried to take Richmond. They are stopped by the South using this unique fort. Under a mile the trail follows earth works known as a subway, whitch conceled soilder as they supplied cannons.
Its very interesting and easy to READ/NICE WALK/DOGS ARE WELCOME
A beautiful wooded trail leads you into the earthworks of Fort Darling, on Drewrys Bluff. This old confederate fort sits high up the side of The James River. Where on a hot July day in 1862, confederates repelled the advance of two federal iron clads, including the Monitor. The invading federal ships were attempting to lay seige in Richmond, about 8 miles up river. Standing atop one of the gun emplacements, you can really imagine being there in that day.
