Closed because of COVID, but when open, has a fascinating collection of Lincoln memorabilia. Grounds are lovely and peaceful.
Built by the Watchorn family... As did their friends the Smiley brothers, Robert and Alma Watchorn contributed greatly to Redlands’ cultural life. A labor organizer, Commissioner of Immigration at Ellis Island, and oilman who experienced the American dream, Robert as a self-made man identified with Abraham Lincoln. He shared that interest with his only child, Emory Ewart. Ewart’s impaired health led to his death at age 25, the result of his service as a pilot in World War I. Devastated by the loss, the Watchorns decided to memorialize their son by erecting a museum in Redlands honoring Lincoln.
It used to be the only dedicated memorial to Lincoln west of the Rockies, Im not sure if that is still true.
American Civil War, Lincolnania, or just a history buff, this place is a hidden gem. Established in 1932, the Shrines collection of documents, artifacts, sculptures, and paintings is constantly growing. Well displayed and very informative. School tours or just a day to yourself, the Shrine wont disappoint. Be sure to ask for a presentation of the Rockwell painting, Thoughts on Peace on Lincolns Birthday, outstanding!
What a wonderful surprise. You must visit! Can be done in 30 mins or take advantage of the wonderful staff to walk you through.
Excellent displays and informative staff. Prices in the store were surprisingly reasonable.
Small place packed full of great Lincoln memorabilia!
This is a nice one for the kids and thier parents to come t.
Very interesting, kids loved the telegraph. The animatronic Lincoln exhibit was amazing.
Very educational. . Beautiful place.
Interesting place. They can boast some surprising Lincoln memorabilia, including ephemera and some Norman Rockwell artwork. Really nicely preserved ceiling mural by Dean Cornwell 1932 should be noted.
First time going here and Ive lived here my whole life. It is amazing! Best collection I have ever seen. Blessed to have this in my home town.
A lovely piece of American history preserved by the Watchorn family. Wonderful dedication to President Lincoln.
Cool, nicely landscaped and wellMaintained. Staffed regularly.
A cool place about some great history, and a great president.
Bind up the Nations wounds...
Cool spot with lots of civil war memorabilia. There was a traveling presentation with an animatronic Lincoln while we were there. It was interesting, generally well done, but the animatronic Lincoln was terrifying for my 6 year old. It sounds fun to teach kids about history, but the display was not really good for young kids. Cool stuff to see otherwise though.
Very interesting and educational. Love to take my grand kids as they get old enough to understand this part of our great history.
Nice exhibit. The show featured was cool. Ends the end of Dec 2018 though.Has been extended to March 2019 ;)
Came for cancer walk for my niece .great turn out
Excellent display and memorabilia about Abe...
This shrine is a must for US history geeks and awesome for parents to introduce their kids to a significant part of American history. The telegraph machine is fun to use as well!
This is a hidden gem of American history. A must-see if you are in Redlands.
Great place to visit and learn history.
A little bit of Civil War/Lincoln history right here in SoCal.
A wonderful tribute to Lincoln. If you have the chance, go to the animatronic showThe Face of Lincoln.....very moving. Its only there until March 31st.
Weve passed by this place a number of times and never ventured inside. Nice little Lincoln museum with quite a lot to look at. Paid the extra charge to view the short presentation with an animatronic Lincoln bust. Folks running the place had a little difficulty using their Square equipment but they were nice.
Redlands, CaliforniaAn interesting hidden gem in... of all places... Redlands. This small museum has many artifacts and is a museum opposed to some shrine where people are idolized.Artifacts are periodically moved/replaced due to space. The curators mentioned they have twice as much stuff but cant lay them all out properly. President Lincoln had many memorable quotes and you can see them on the ceiling throughout the exhibit. There are sections dedicated to his upbringing, career, education, failures, goal of emancipation that began before his political career and so on. I am surprised they didnt have any section dedicated to why or how he was murdered.Warning: Some pictures taken might be offensive.Access/Roads: APaved near DT Redlands.Parking: APlenty with a private lot.Distance: AAbout 60 miles east of Los Angeles.Costs: AFreei would like to return when they change exhibits to see more of what they have to offer. Its still a sight to behold for any historian and civil war buff. There isnt much dedicated to ethnic freedoms and all that and thats ok. We have plenty museums around the country that focus on solely civil rights.Safe travelings.
A nice place. Didnt know it was here.
Very complete history of Lincoln from birth to death. Many period artifacts on display with helpful staff to answer your questions.
Its really cool you dont have to pay or anything theres Lincolns letters and guns and more I definitely think you should go there
A place adults and children and young adults would enjoy lots of stuff to see lots of stuff to do you can have a picnic outside your right across from the park there is food places nearby and everything is free but maybe except the food but theres no admission charge they have a donation station if you want to do something when we went there and were just putting up a new exhibit so part of it was closed when we went in but its probably open by this time being in August
Incredible collection of President Lincoln before election and after!
A beautiful place to relax and have peace
Went inside, the docents were very welcoming, showed us all around and answered questions. Learned new stuff about the Lincoln era, war time.
The animatronics are better than the Disneyland one. I wish there were more things for the kids to do though.
Great little museum.
Nice, quiet place to sit & have lunch.
Very nice small museum
A gem in the city of Redlands. Enjoy the Reflection of the face of Lincoln on my last visit. I highly recommend this for students of all ages .
Historical, educational, perfect location. Overall, Unexpected Jem in the inland empire
Excellent exhibit. Definitely worth the trip and great food options nearby
Unique museum dedicated to Abraham Lincoln. Currently showing an amazingly lifelike animatronic bust of Lincoln, a presentation set in the context of his presidency. Will be there through December, when it departs on a nationwide tour. Not to be missed!
I love the collection here, and the gentle reminder of such an important person.
Believe walk, enjoying all the fun
Small but informative about Mr Lincoln.
Finally visited the Shrine. The docents are knowledgeable and welcoming. Supposed by the collection of artifacts presented. Hidden gem in the area.
Amazing library full of history.
Hidden gem in Redlands. Very nice location honoring the best president.
Cute place its nice for tourists but its small and if youre looking to go somewhere for like half an hour then this is fun also theres a library near by
Very knowledgable. Smaller than I expected, but they do offer a disney like attraction that costs $5. We didnt do it but was told it was about 15-20 minutes long.
The Lincoln Shrine in Redlands was a real surprise for me. My childhood was spent 15 miles away and I never knew about this Museum / Shrine. Wow! It is very high grade. First the building is a nice granite edifice with carved quotes from Mr. Lincoln all around. The staff is a group of dedicated volunteers that have made this free museum into a showcase of history. There is an original Norman Rockwell inside as well. The interior is spacious and the displays are thoughtful. The only thing I needed was more time to study and read all the displays. This is worth a stop and State Street, a short walk away has many choices for lunch. I hope to return and examine the treasures on display in this facility soon.
Small but interesting. Its a beautiful building.
I did not know this was here. We stopped in out of curiosity and ended up spending hours there. We where fascinated by the breadth and cope of the collection. Great staff, very friendly and available to answer questions.
